Welcome to Holy Family Church · Eudora, KS 66025 2

This year’s Archbishop’s Call to Share appeal has us reflect on being Called to Share. Please prayerfully consider giving to the needs of our Archdiocese as we conduct the 2018 Archbishop’s Call to Share over the next six weeks. Thank you if you have already made your gift to ACTS! If you haven’t yet, please return your pledge envelope today or donate online at www.calltoshare.org.

Marriage Minute We often confuse humility with humiliation. To humiliate someone means to injure their self respect or to make them feel ashamed. Humility, on the other hand, is simply regarding ourselves honestly, and it is necessary for a happy marriage! When we lack humility, we tend to cut ourselves down or puff ourselves up, or both. We become defensive, argumentative and unforgiving. In this weekend’s readings, both John and Jesus show great humility. They know exactly who they are, and therefore they can accomplish their missions. Put humility to work in your mission, too!

Ask forgiveness

THE TEN ESSENTIALS OF CATHOLICISM

During the next several weeks in this column, I will present a course that I have labelled “The Ten Essen-tials of Catholicism.” It is a chance for all of us to study what we really believe in our faith and why we believe it.

Let me begin with this: if we were to forget everything that has been learned about faith, how would we arrive at the essentials of Catholicism? I believe that the start-ing point would be this: do you care about the problems of the world? Some people really do not care about what is happening in the world, usually because they are only interested in what happens from their own point of view. For them, caring about what is happen-ing is not in their realm of interest. This is the ultimate form of selfishness.

But if you do care, then there are many solutions. You can choose to live a good life even though you do not believe in an organized way. You can choose to live a life based on the principles of some ideals like love, happiness, and so forth. You can choose a life of being a leader with purely secular interests.

But you can choose religious faith as a solution. And make that the way to live. That is what we have done. We have freely chosen the Christian religious faith ac-cording to the Roman Catholic Church. There are other Christian churches, to be sure, but you and I have said through our realized Catholic Baptism, that we believe living out that religion is the way of caring about our world. Likewise there are other religions that give other ways to believe, such as the teachings of Buddhism, the Jewish faith, teachings of Islam, and so forth—there are a number of different ways to “believe” in our world.

Religious faith simply defined may be: “a belief in something bigger than we are.” With the adjective “Christian,” it means that believing what Jesus Christ taught in his ministry among us. Therefore, the state-ment that leads to acceptance of the Christian religious faith is this: I care about the things that are happening in the world and in my life right now, and I want to show that I care by taking what Jesus said, and apply-ing it in the way that I live my life.

Whether or not it is the “true” faith is a separate ques-tion and really does not matter to us. For us it is the “true” faith because it is true for us. This faith is freely given and freely accepted, that is, we are not forced. Considering adults here (the young people and very young are a separate case), if we are forced, we are not freely choosing it. Thus, we are freely choosing the Catholic Christian faith as a means whereby I can ac-cept a system that will care about our life and our world.

BACKGROUND OF THE GOSPEL Luke 3:15-16, 21-22

Judaism, with its whole tradition of the mikvah, or ritual bath, was well acquainted with the water ablutions that John mentions (v. 16). The reference to a baptism “with the holy Spirit and fire” further on in the verse em-phasizes that Jesus’ action goes beyond religious ritual; it will have an efficacy that will transform the whole created order, just as fire alters the material state of matter. Early Christian mosaics depict this point by presenting Jesus standing in the Jordan River with smiling fish surrounding his feet as the Baptist pours water over Jesus’ head. John clarifies his subservient role to Christ with his preaching in 3:15-18. From the beginning of Luke’s Gospel, information about John the Baptist has come before the accounts dealing with Jesus. In keeping with this thematic development of the Baptist as precursor, Luke skillfully provides the account of John’s arrest (3:19-20) before the narrative surrounding Jesus’ baptism (3:21-22).

Luke shows Jesus praying at critical points in his life. To underscore the point that John is lesser than Jesus, Luke recounts the baptism itself in the passive voice. There is no conversation between the two individuals. Jesus is baptized as one among the crowd, the voice from heaven is directed only to him, and it is understood that the others do not hear it. Later, when the Baptist sends messengers to Jesus (7:18-23), there is no indication of his being aware of having baptized Jesus.

To interpret the baptism, Luke relies on a conflation of two Old Testament passages. The first half of the voice from heaven (v. 22) is a paraphrase of Psalm 2:7, while the second half is part of Isaiah 42:1. It should be noted, how-ever, that the textual witnesses for this section display a wide variety of readings. One manuscript, for example, quotes Psalm 2:7 in its entirety: “You are my Son, this day I have begotten you.” The version that we have here re-flects the evidence from Codices Vaticanus and Sinaiticus, two of the most dependable of the extant Gospel manu-scripts. A similar, although not an exact, quotation is found at the transfiguration of Jesus (9:35). According to the science of the ancients, doves were considered not to have any bile and thus were symbolic of virtue. Not only were they worthy for sacrifice to God, but, as seen here, they also symbolized the divine presence.

Just a thought… “If ministers and their flocks would worry more about listening to the call of Jesus, and less about money and whose religion is right or wrong, we wouldn’t have the mire and misery that we have now.” (Sermon by a Methodist minister)

Pope Francis reminds us that the Church is in a moment of “spiritual turbulence.” He is asking Catholics around the world to pray the Rosary for the protection of the Church. The daily praying of the Rosary will unite the faithful “in communion and penance, as a people of God, in asking the Holy Mother of God and St. Michael the Archangel to protect the Church from the devil, who always aims to divide us from God and among us.” Therefore during the month of January you are invited to join fellow parishioners in reciting the St. Michael the Archangel prayer following all Masses. During the month of February we will pray the Rosary twenty minutes prior to each of the weekend Masses.

The Bird's Nest, sponsored by Eudora Schools and area churches, provides free clothing to students in need. The schools will be partner with His Hands Clothing Closet to provide clothing to infants and adults as well. If you would like to help, we are accepting monetary donations, new and gently used clothing, sizes 3T-adult, new underwear, new socks, and new personal hygiene items. Monetary donations can be sent to the Eudora Schools Foundation at 1310 Winchester Road, Eudora, KS. When The Nest opens soon we will need volunteers to sort clothing and work in the store while students shop. If you would like to donate clothing or volunteer your time, contact Molly at [email protected].
