DESCRIPTION

Not long ago, we shared a really interesting article featured on the SSIR website entitled ‘The Eight-Word Mission Statement’ with the Australian Not for Profit Linkedin group . In short , the article explains how some NFPs have long winded and wordy mission statements and examines the need for NFPs to get the point and to do it in just eight words. Why eight words? Well, it’s short enough to keep things succinct but long enough to be specific. An eight-word mission statement will tell you the what, the now and the how. What are the key ingredients for this short, snappy statement? ’A verb, a target population and an outcome that implies something to measure’. ‘The eight-word mission statement is indispensable as a starting point for real measurement of impact. You can’t measure impact unless you know what you’re setting out to accomplish.’ Click here to view the full article over at SSIR’s blog. Here’s what some of the LinkedIn group members thought of the article: •‘I really like the simplicity of capturing a verb, the target audience and the outcome all in eight words – work in progress for many organisations’ •‘I’ve used an 9 word mission statement to tie all of our programs to the organisations vision and the Board now uses it to guide their Strategic Planning.’ •‘It needs to be its version of the “elevator statement” . It should encapsulate the organisation’s core purpose in a way that is compelling and memorable. It needs to attract customers AND donors, inspire staff and guide their work, as well as explain the organisation for grant and funding applications.’ •‘The advantage of a short statement is that it is easy to remember, doesn’t prescribe how, and provides a big picture to step up to.’ •But what do you think? Can you get your mission statement to eight razor sharp words? Do you think its the right approach? What is your mission statement and does it cut to the chase?
