interview successBy the SThree UK Talent Acquisition Team
No. 1
We consider candidates who tell us what they “like”, “don’t like” or are “surprised to find out” engaging. This is also an indicator of a proactive personality.
Do not just repeat what is on the company’s website. Whilst researching note down your opinions and express them during the interview.
No. 2
Manage your emotions before the interview and make sure your body language doesn't give you away.
If you are offered a glass of water, accept it. If nerves get the better of you, you can take a sip, giving you time to think about how to answer the questions.
No. 3
Find out about the interviewers on LinkedIn and do some research on them. The more you know the better you will be able to build rapport with them.
It will also make you feel more confident about meeting the interviewers for the first time.
No. 4
Use numbers and figures to support your achievements. This helps reinforce you as a career driven individual.
Have a detailed description of your achievements ready. If you have generated revenue for the company or increased productivity then prove it.
No. 5
You are going to be given a lot of information at the interview and you might not be able to retain all of it.
This is why it is helpful to take a pen and paper to write some facts down.
No. 6
Always ask for constructive criticism as to how you did during an interview. This will enable you to know where you stand.
It will also alleviate any potential objections which could prevent you from getting the job.
No. 7
Little hints of colour are great to show some personality such as a pocket square and tie for the gents. If in doubt play it safe and keep it monochrome.
First impressions count, especially when it comes to what you wear. Stick with black, grey or navy as the main colours of your suit or dress.
No. 8
If you are interviewing with similar companies, then compare them with each other by asking questions as well as challenging what they can offer you.
Remember, the interview is not just about whether you fit the company but also whether the company is right for you.
No. 9
The interviewer will want to know that you are aligning the job opportunity with your goals.
Make sure your questions tie in with what matters to you. If your priorities are money and career progression, then ask questions referring to these two job aspects.
No. 10
For example, if you would like to buy a house, then know why this would feel like a success for you and what would be the next goal after you have achieved it.
Ensure that you know what motivates you and that you have short, medium and long term goals. Also be able to back these up with some more personal reasons.
