"Having the opportunity to read to our elementary
students reminds me of my days at TBES. I
remember when I was in their place and looking at
our "superstar" athletes, being so thankful that
they took the time to help us with our reading." -
Jae'lyne Williams, Student-Athlete
Our students love to read!
HOMECOMINGBy Kemplin Dickison
Homecomings have been a part of school traditions since the early 1900's. Although they originated as a college tradition, they were quickly adopted by high schools across the nation. While the exact origin of "home coming" is a widely debated topic, there are certain qualities that homecomings are all about, football, uniting students and alumni, and big celebrations. Tom Bean certainly did not invent homecoming, but we know how to do it right and include all of the main events. Events: -Football: October 5th @ The Mighty Tomcat Stadium, beginning at 7:30. -Uniting Students and Alumni: The alumni come to the game, play with the band, and even crown the homecoming court. -Big Celebrations: Parades, Bonfire, Court, Pep Rally, Game, and Dance. Refer to Pg 2 right side column for dates.

By Jae'lyne Williams Each and every year, the primary goal of our teachers/staff at Tom Bean ISD is to engage students in their own learning process. As you will see throughout the year, our teachers take pride in delivering the curriculum to their students in a creative manner. According to the the George Lucas Educational Foundation, students who are actively/physically engaged in their learning are much more prone to understanding/mastering the content. Edutopia.org suggests that teachers should practice the following good habits if they wish to maximize learning/student growth in their classroom. Our teachers do a fantastic job of keeping these things in mind when preparing lessons for their students. 1) MAKE IT MEANINGFUL - In aiming for full engagement, it is essential that students perceive activities as being meaningful. Research has shown that if students do not consider a learning activity worthy of their time and effort, they might not engage in a satisfactory way, or may even disengage entirely. 2) EMBRACE COLLABORATIVE LEARNING Collaborative learning is another powerful facilitator of engagement in learning activities. When students work effectively with others, their engagement may be amplified as a result. 3. ESTABLISH POSITIVE TEACHER-STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS High-quality teacher-student relationships are another critical factor in determining student engagement, especially in the case of difficult students and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. When students form close and caring relationships with their teachers, they are fulfilling their developmental need for a connection with others and a sense of belonging in society.
ENGAGING STUDENTS INTHE CLASSROOM
Mrs. Mathes' 8th grade U.S. History classes are pictured above reenacting the history of Jamestown Colony with a theater skit. The students enjoyed bringing this history content to life, while giving their peers a more vivid understanding of the subject matter. "Students made back to school arrangements for all employees of the district." Pictured to the left are Mrs. Chapman's Floral Design classes who wanted to welcome back the staff of Tom Bean ISD.
