Identical twins Jake and Zak Himmelman have been associated with The Summit Foundation (TSF) since they arrived in Breckenridge at the age of 5, when they attended Little Red Schoolhouse and then Breckenridge Elementary School. They grew up skiing for Quantum Sports (now Team Breckenridge Ski Club) and playing golf at the Breckenridge Golf Club.

While attending Summit High School they were both on the ski team and co-captains of the golf team. In conjunction with their graduation in 2002, they both received the Watson McCaffrey Golf Classic / Scott McCrea Memorial Scholarships through The Foundation.

With financial support from The Summit Foundation, Jake (the older twin by 4 minutes), studied at the University of Denver and graduated in 2006 with a degree in Marketing. Jake is now a Broker-partner at Breckenridge Associates (realestateofbreckenridge.com), a local real estate company. Jake supports The Foundation through his business’ patron pass partnership. He continues to spend his free time skiing and playing golf, but also has a strong interest in playing the guitar, traveling, and fly-fishing.

While reflecting on TSF, Jake said: “The Summit Foundation helped give us the means for a good education and without that we would not have been able to be here, start our businesses, and contribute back to the community. We have a sense of loyalty to this community because of what The Foundation has shown us and we now enjoy giving back.”

Zak also attended the University of Denver and graduated in 2006 with a degree in Digital Media and Photography. He is the owner of ZDH Designs (zdhdesign.com), a photography and website design company with an emphasis on real estate photography. Zak is also beginning his 16th summer season at the Breckenridge Golf Club. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Breckenridge Film Festival. Zak is married to Taryn Power, the Deputy Town Clerk for the Town of Breckenridge.

“I always wanted to return to Summit County to start a business here,” says Zak. “That would not have been possible without the support of TSF. The Foundation affords other kids the same opportunities that we had. Kids growing up in Summit County have a real sense of pride in the community and that is because of The Summit Foundation.”

Both Jake and Zak are actively involved in The Foundation’s Annual Golf Tournament. Jake has played in the tournament the past seven years and is a 3-time winner. Zak assists with the management of the tournament. Through their individual businesses, both Jake and Zak support the Business Battle Race of the Great Rubber Duck Race and recently attended the 30th Anniversary Celebration.

The Himmelman twins are proud to be part of a full circle of giving with The Summit Foundation. From participating in youth sports that The Foundation supported and receiving scholarships, they are now happy to contribute.

Photo by ZDH DesignCelebrating 30 YearsOn March 29th, 250 people filled the Silverthorne Pavilion to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of The Summit Foundation. Guests enjoyed delicious desserts from Butterhorn Bakery, Dining Redefined, Higgles Ice Cream, Keystone Resort, and Sugar. Remarks were made by Executive Director Lee Zimmerman, current Board of Trustees President Kevin McDonald, and past Presidents Larry Beebe and Meg Lass. The lobby was filled with 30 years of memorabilia, including scrap books and all 30 years of Patron Pass medallions. The 6 Million Dollar Band performed fun 80’s hits and kept the crowd dancing with their high-energy performance. The Foundation is grateful to all who came and supported this great event.

On April 30th, Which Wich and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Silverthorne donated 30 percent of their day’s sales – nearly $1,000 – to The Summit Foundation. Various businesses from throughout the county ordered lunch for their employees and the staff of The Summit Foundation delivered lunches to their respective workplaces. Throughout the lunch hours, the entire restaurant filled with Summit County locals who dined in support of The Summit Foundation. The Summit Foundation thanks Kelsey and Seth Lyons, owners of Which Wich and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Silverthorne, for their generosity in honoring our 30th Anniversary.

Andy Lewis and his wife Sally have enjoyed living in Summit County for the past 11 years. They moved to Breckenridge from Pittsburgh after Andy’s retirement from Lewis-Goetz and Company, a distribution company of industrial rubber products.

Retirement in Breckenridge has been a true delight for the Lewis’. Their adult children, Julie and Andrew, live in the Front Range with their spouses and children. Their families, including their six grandchildren, come to visit frequently, enjoying all that Summit County has to offer.

Shortly after moving here, Sally and Andy both became active with Breckenridge Music Festival and Applause!, as well as Father Dyer United Methodist Church in Breckenridge. Several years later, Andy joined the board of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). These volunteer tasks have been very rewarding, and have led to many strong friendships for the Lewis’.

In 2009, Andy was asked to serve on the Board of Trustees for The Summit Foundation. Andy enjoys serving on the Grant and Scholarship Committees for The Foundation, and finds the grant process very exciting. While reflecting on the nonprofit community here in Summit County, Andy says,

“The financial generosity of the businesses and individuals is remarkable, and is equally matched by donations of time, compassion, and energy to the numerous nonprofit causes, whether it be helping at food banks, improving mountain trails, mentoring children, or building a theater set. Working with a number of the nonprofits has increased my admiration for the dedication, skill, and commitment of those individuals who work for the nonprofits.”

Andy and Sally both agree that Summit County is a wonderful and special place based upon the commitment level to better communities.

Andy feels that working with The Foundation has enabled him to understand and relate to those who feel a sense of pride and a feeling of wanting to give back to a community that means so much to them.

In April 2014, the Youth Giving Council at Summit High School awarded $11,455 in grants to 14 local nonprofit and student organizations. Comprised of students from the Summit High School Leadership class, the Youth Giving Council was created in Fall 2012 by TSF. Since inception, nearly $30,000 has been distributed to organizations and groups that support Summit County youth. The group focuses on teaching youth about philanthropy while allowing high school students to participate in the grant process.

Groups applied to the Council for mini-grants (up to $1,200) that would have a significant impact on Summit County youth. The Council, led by The Summit Foundation’s Events & Marketing Coordinator Elisabeth Lawrence, then reviewed the applications and determined appropriate grant award amounts. This is the third cycle of grant awards for the Youth Giving Council.

In the interest of teaching youth about philanthropy in our community, The Foundation has partnered with Breckenridge Grand Vacations and The Summit Foundation’s ski area partners to provide support to the Youth Giving Council. Breckenridge Grand Vacations awarded a grant to The Summit Foundation to fund the Youth Giving Council. And this ski season, Vail Resorts, Copper Mountain Resort, and Arapahoe Basin Ski Area provided TSF the opportunity to sell one additional patron pass with transferable ski privileges specifically to raise funds for the Youth Giving Council.

Spring 2014 Youth Giving Council members included Levi Ascher, Valentina Blass, Jamie Byers, Meagan Collins, Morgan Courtney, Brian Curnutte, Diana Gasiouk, Natalie Gray, Drew Hartley, Megan Heil, Genna Hiller, Sam Hull, Blair Huntley, Tom Kalina, Joy Manguso, Cait McCluskie, Maddie O’Malley, Max Ortiz, Bailey Radek, and Josue Razo.

Join The Summit Foundation and thousands of spectators on Saturday, August 30th near the Blue River in Breckenridge to enjoy the 27th Annual Great Rubber Duck Race sponsored by Breckenridge Grand Vacations.

The Hudson Auto Source Kids Duck Dash will kick-off the three duck races at 1 p.m., as 750 ducks are dropped by Red, White, and Blue Fire from the Adams Street Bridge into the Blue River. More than 40 prizes for the kids race are being donated by Peak-A-Boo Toys and Vail Resorts Echo, among others.

The second of the three races begins at 2 p.m. from Main Street Station. FirstBank of Summit County is sponsoring this Business Battle Duck Race, where little yellow swimmers purchased by local organizations and businesses, will compete for a private group snow cat experience on Chicago Ridge, as well as additional group-oriented prizes. Be sure to check out the decorated Business Battle Ducks on display around the Riverwalk Center. You will be amazed at the creativity!

And finally at 3 p.m., the Breckenridge Grand Vacations Great Rubber Duck Race will send nearly 10,000 little quackers from Main Street Station streaming for the finish line at the Riverwalk Center. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to a minimum of the top 50 ducks, including a week-long vacation at a destination chosen by the winner.

Blue River Plaza will be filled with family friendly activities all day in our Duck Village, including face-painting, kids amusements, and delicious Higgles Ice Cream!

Adopt your ducks now by sending in the enclosed adoption form. Ducks may be adopted online at summitfoundation.org or at various locations around Summit County beginning the first week of August. Thousands of dollars in prizes will be awarded… even a prize for the slowest duck.

On the morning of Thursday July 31, nationally recognized, Colorado-based philanthropy expert Bruce DeBoskey will lead a workshop to help you achieve more effective, meaningful, and joyful family and personal philanthropy. Incorporating tools and lessons from 21/64 (2164.net), Lynne Twist’s “The Soul of Money”, Tracey Gary’s “Inspired Philanthropy”, Bolder Giving (boldergiving.org) and The DeBoskey Group’s extensive experience working with individuals and families, Bruce will help answer the following questions:

• What values inspire me to be philanthropic?• What causes and issues am I most passionate about?• What is the difference between being a donor and a philanthropist?• How can I get my family more involved in philanthropy?• How do different generations view their role in the world?• How can I pass more than money to my heirs?• How do I find the best nonprofit partners with whom to work?• How much should I give to charity?

As the workshop will be interactive, donors are encouraged to bring their spouse and family members to work through these questions together. Donors in attendance will be provided Motivational Values Cards from 21/64.

Hosted by The Peaks Society of The Summit Foundation, the workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday July 31 at Beaver Run Resort & Conference Center in Breckenridge. Space is limited, so RSVP’s are encouraged today. To RSVP, or to learn more, contact Kasey Geoghegan at 970.453.5970 or [email protected].

Bruce DeBoskey, J.D., is a Philanthropic Strategist with The DeBoskey Group (deboskeygroup.com), a consulting practice he founded to help individuals and families, businesses and foundations design and implement thoughtful philanthropic strategies and actionable plans. Bruce is the author of a regular monthly column “On Philanthropy” which appears in the Business Section of the Sunday Denver Post and is distributed digitally to millions of readers worldwide.

Bruce served for nearly nine years as the Anti-Defamation League’s Mountain States Regional Director, and before that, as a Colorado trial lawyer for 25 years. He holds a B.A. from Indiana University and a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center. He is married and the father of four boys, ages 26 to 5.
