LENTEN DEVOTIONS

This year we would like to assemble our own Lenten Book of Devotions with thoughts and prayers written by our own church members. This booklet will have readings for each day

during Lent. It can be very meaningful to read stories and devotions that have been written by

our church friends.

We are in need of 40 people to write a short devotional. Each one should be 400 words or less, and can be about life, family, God, church,

sacrifice, faith…something that has touched your life. Please let Karen Oothoudt know if you

would like to write one ([email protected]). They will be

needed by February 8.

VBS 2015

SHROVE (FAT) TUESDAY

PANCAKE SUPPER

FREE & prepared/served by your church staff! February 17 | 5-7p

Parish Hall

RSVP on your Connection Card, online, or by contacting

the church office!

The day before the beginning of Lent is known as “Shrove Tuesday.” The old-fashioned English word shrove means “to hear confession of sins, assure the person of God’s

forgiveness, and to give appropriate spiritual advice.” On Shrove Tuesday, many Christians take time to reflect upon

their lives, identifying wrong doings and areas of their lives in which they desire spiritual growth. This prayerful self-examination becomes the basis for their decision to fast from particular foods or activities during the Lenten season. As a result of the self-examination, persons may also decide to perform acts of service for others during

the forty days of Lent.

Shrove Tuesday is also referred to as “Fat Tuesday” or “Pancake Day,” because in some faith traditions the cooking with meat, eggs, sugar, and butter would be

sacrificed during Lent. A good way to deplete the supply of these items in the household was to make pancakes!
