Dear Friends,

Part of my vision for our synagogue is to view our Shabbat services almost like a multiplex in the movie theater. I believe the term syna-plex is trademarked, but you get the idea. You walk into the movies and have choices; you walk into synagogue and have choices. Now, in addition to our Friday night services, we offer a monthly tot-Shabbat. Youngsters join us for the oneg, have

their own service, and come into the main service for a story. We also offer a monthly family-style Shabbat dinne.

Shabbat morning we also offer some variety. You can come to the regular services or an Orthodox service. At the regular service you can stay in the main sanctuary for some learning and a triennial Torah reading, or go into the chapel for a full Torah reading. After services we offer Bagels and Bible, some kind of learning usually led by our lay people. I hope to offer more in the future, including a monthly tot Shabbat and possibly a learning service. I am looking for volunteers to lead these activities.

I am trying out one other idea on Shabbat morning, February 11. Andy Sussman who used to play the guitar and help lead our Friday night services is putting this together with me. We are calling it Four Worlds Davening – A Kabbalah Service. The kabbalah teaches that we live in four worlds, like Russian nested dolls, and each world contains a different level of our soul. Through traditional prayers, meditations, and songs in Hebrew and English, we will reach out to God with all four levels of our soul.

The first world is olam ha-asiya, the world of action. The soul at this level is the nefesh. Here we serve God with our physical self. This corresponds to the early morning blessings which speak about preparing the various parts of our bodies to do God’s work.

The second world is olam ha-yitzira, the world of formation. Sometimes I call this the world of passion or emo-tion. The soul at this level is the ruach, spirit or wind. This corresponds to the emotional preparation through singing and chanting pesukai d’zimra.

The third world is olam ha-beria, the world of creation. I call this the world of the intellect. The soul at this level is the neshama, literally the breath of God. Animals have lower levels of the soul, but only humans have a neshama. This corresponds to the sh’ma and its blessings, the heart of the service.

The fourth or highest world is olam ha-atzilut, the world of emanation. I call this the world of the spirit. The soul at this level is the chaya, literally life itself. This is the world where everything else falls away and we stand before God’s throne. This corresponds to the amidah, said in God’s presence with no distractions.

After we leave this highest level, the prayer service does not suddenly end. We slowly step down from the highest level. In the aleynu prayer we are reminded of our obligation, to uncover the holy sparks of God and by doing so, fulfilling the obligation of tikkun olam – repairing the world.

Let me invite those interested to join Andy for Four Worlds Davening – A Kabbalah Service, February 11, 9:30 – 10:45 am. Then come into the main sanctuary to hear our wonderful guest speaker, Leslie Sachs from Women of the Wall.

Shalom,Rabbi Michael Gold

Installation Speech - January 13, 2017

Good evening and Shabbat Shalom. First, I’d like to welcome our Guest Cantor, Jenna Kra-marow and her husband, Adam. Yashir koach for leading services. Tonight, I can proudly say that I have achieved 50% of the biggest goal of my presidency - that of becoming an Immediate Past President. All kidding aside, this evening we honor our officers and boards - those who selflessly give their time, money, and energy to ensure that TBTST continues to endure. Thank you, Sherry Klawsky, for chairing tonight’s event, and to Donna Rosier and Steve Sax for helping coordinate everything for this evening.

To our temple officers, Executive Vice President Valerie Preston Mercado, Activities Vice President Jody Glass, Membership Vice President Bruce Berkowitz, David Berger, who just completed his position of three years as VP at Large, Treasurer Alan Paley, Communications Secretary Cheryl Temkin, Recording Secretary Jacqui Montag, Financial Secretary Stew Klawsky, and Immediate Past President Nancy Small, I thank you for your unwavering support and dedication. You provide sage advice and put your hearts into helping our temple thrive.

Our Board of Directors, along with our Sisterhood and Men’s Club boards, are committed bodies which prove time and time again that together we are stronger than any one of us is alone, and that when we put our minds together, we can accomplish anything. I’d like to also acknowledge our office staff and departmental directors and teachers for working hard towards our common goal, and Rabbi Gold, who I have really enjoyed working with and getting to know better. On a personal note, I would also like to thank my wife, Julie, and our boys, Joey and Gabe, for their support.

Why do we commemorate Installation, and what does it mean to serve on a board? It can mean that you are among the few “doers” who rise to the occasion when something needs to get done, or that you are one of the few that get asked repeatedly to donate or to sponsor an event. It can mean spending many hours a week in this building. It can also mean that members single you out when they want to share a concern, and often, it can be a thankless position. But serving on a board allows you to help set policy, to act as a leader, and it can be one of the most rewarding things you ever do. That is why we are here this evening, to acknowledge you for all that you do.

Keeping TBTST going is a mitzvah, and I believe that it helps the greater good. Together, we are an example to the community, not just Jewish - but all faiths. We provide a huge service to our congregants - a place to pray and meditate, to socialize, learn, gather, make friends, celebrate life events and comfort one another when mourning. Being an Officer or Board Member is an honor, a responsibility to our community, and most of all, a privilege. Thank you all for giving yourself for the betterment of TBTST. It is also my privilege to continue in my position, and I look forward to working with all of you this year.

Early Childhood NewsZvia Dover, Early Childhood Center [email protected]

In this note I’d like to share with you something I experienced in the past, and have already shared with many: A few years ago, I witnessed the following:In the dramatic play area of a PreK/ 4 yrs old classroom (the area that looks like a mini-kitchen) we set up the cabinets to depict a grocery store. We brought a real cash register and posi-tioned empty containers of various foods on the shelves there; we were mindful as to what to position, so we avoided Coca Cola cans, yet included whole-grain pasta boxes, replica of

fruits, vegetables, etc. Providing Post-It® notes and markers we asked the PreK children to price the goods. Open-ing up children to such numerous opportunities, ones that serve children’s purposeful play is an example of an appropriate and intentional planning in a carefully set up early childhood setting. One child priced a half gallon milk for $1, and a small juice box for $4. The educator thought, “Is this child blind? half a gallon for $1, and a tiny juice box for $4?” The next day, we brought the experience back to the entire group, and we asked the child to explain why he priced the ½ gallon milk at $1 and the small lunch-size juice-box at $4. Here’s what the child said:“Milk is healthier than juice. So if it is cheaper, more people will buy the milk than the juice.” I was the educator that (initially) underestimated the child’s action of pricing the $1 larger item versus the $4 smaller drink. (For the purpose of this discussion, I ask that you put aside the debate carried on nowadays in regards to consuming milk). Without going into details, that pricing ambiguity lead to a serious discussion within that classroom which demonstrated tremendous amount of care and sympathy towards others. This was something that we, the educators, did not anticipate, and decided that the topic was valuable enough to put our agenda on hold, and truly build upon children’s interests. Who sets rules for society? How are rules determined to be of value? Who decides what is valuable, and to whom is something valuable? What is the individual’s role in looking after others? It was this 4 year old boy that paved the road to one of the pillars in my philosophy of how I view the early years. I believe that children are strong, capable individuals, eager to learn, citizens of today. As such, they deserve quality education now. Now and not later when they turn 18. Children learn best when the experiences they encounter are relevant to the context of their lives. I learned from John Dewey’s teachings, that education in itself is “the process of living, and not preparation for future liv-ing”. Therefore, curriculum, teaching, and learning should derive and reflect real-life experiences, grounded in the culture, time, and place of the entire learning community, taking children’s perspectives into account. I hope this brief note leaves you with some food for thought, and in honor of the sensitive and caring PreK classroom I mentioned above, I am ending this reflection with the words of the well-respected, world-recognized scholar, my mentor and dear friend, Dr. Lilian Katz who reminds us:

“Each of us must come to care about everyone else’s children. We must recognize that the welfare of our children is intimately linked to the welfare of all other people’s children. After all, when one of our children needs life-saving surgery, someone else’s child will perform it. If one of our children is harmed by violence, someone else’s child will be responsible for the violent act. The good life for our own children can be secured only if a good life is also secured for all other people’s children.”

How can one measure the success of an educational curriculum? Although we are in the midst of the school year, it is now the time to assess the success of the curriculum put in place, review outcomes for the following year, and make needed modifica-tions so that the curriculum will address future desired social, emotional and educational goals. Per the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, Council of Chief State School Officers, curriculum is “The tool we use to execute our purpose for schools; the way in which we put the abstractions of our vision into concrete realities; curriculum is an expression of purpose” (2010). For many years, there has been debate surrounding what the purpose of curriculum should be and what the role of the educator would be in the educational setting. It was argued that teachers should teach students facts regarding past and present events as fundamental

blocks of knowledge for future educational purposes. Opposing this approach, it was argued that students should be engaged in a meaningful learning process that will allow them to develop and establish methods for gaining future knowledge as reflected from their personal interest. Both methods believe in teaching a certain content. The outcomes of one would be measured by test scores, while the other will be measured by the ability of self-thinking and reflecting on new material. I do believe that there should be a common knowledge taught at all levels, however, students do need to be provided with the opportunity to be an active participant in their own learning process, and to develop cognitive abilities that will establish their role as the future leaders of our society. Ultimately, it is not just the academic outcome that makes a curriculum successful. A successful curriculum is one that incorporates age appropriate social and emotional goals, tied with educational goals to provide all aspects of students’ developmental needs.

So how can one assess curriculum success? • When parents engaged in conversation about how the word pomegranate is pronounced in Hebrew, since their children came home and tried to teach the learned word to their parents. I then can assess retention of knowledge learned in class. • When a Kindergarten mom walks in to my office to let me know that her daughter asked her if the lollipop she is eating is kosher, letting the mom know that if it is not, she will not be able to bring it into the Temple. I then can assess students’ ability to reflect on learned material. • When a parent shares that his daughters refused to go to Disney World over the weekend since they didn’t want to miss Hebrew School. I can assess that social goals were met. • When a mom tells me that she can’t believe her child loves Hebrew School so much is when I know that emotional goals were met. There are many components which equally contribute to a successful curriculum. However, the one and most important component that every curriculum relies on is unconditionally devoted educators. Educators that are driven with the mission of sharing their endless knowledge and instilling the love of Judaism to their students. Educators that put their heart and soul in making our school a warm place, a second home, where students feel welcome and loved. It is thanks to them that our curriculum is so successful and that our school thrives.

What happens when you put some sharks on a campsite? TBTST’s annual Chapter Weekend, that’s what happens! This is a weekend full of bonding and fun which took place at Camp Owaissa Bauer, once again, from January 20th-22nd. Our chapter weekend takes all the best parts of camping, but makes it a memorable experience. A few of the highlights of the weekend were Family Game Night, Founding Fathers Edition and the American Race. Family Game Night consisted of Pre Kadimaniks, Kadimaniks, and USYers playing life size board games, such as checkers, giant Jenga (with a twist), giant Head Bandz, etc. Our American Race program required our Chapter Weekend participants to com-

pete against each other to finish an obstacle course by completing tasks to obtain the next clue. Other events of the weekend included a nature walk schararit called a Prayture Walk, mixers, and fun outdoor activities. Another unique thing about this Chapter Weekend is the opportunity to pick a Limmud session taught by USY board members. Limmud means “to learn” in English and learning is what USYers and Kadimaniks do. The classes to choose from included “Stress: Relaxing Ways to Deal with It” led by Zak Kostzer and our parent chaperon Elyse Kostzer, “Changing the World, One Electronic at a Time” taught by Lauren Shore and Rachel Sandhouse, and “Bath-room Break: What Judaism Says About Transgender Bathrooms” instructed by Jakob Levin and Ilana Soffer. Our Pre Kadimanicks had special Limmud sessions written and taught by our Hebrew School Director, Ronit Goldstein. On Sunday, we had forty-five kids return home exhausted with huge smiles on their faces, due to all the fun they had. February Calendar of Events• February 1st – USY “Match Game” 7-8:30pm at Temple Beth Am• February 2nd – Kadima “Fish Bowl Game” 7-8:30pm at TBTST• February 8th – USY “SATO Program” 7-8:30pm at TBTST• February 9th – Pre Kadima and Kadima “Bowling Night” 6-8pm at Strikers• February 12th – All Groups “Tu Bishvat at the Park” 12-2pm at Sunset Point Park• February 19th – Pre Kadima, Kadima, and USY “Yom Disney” all day at Magic Kingdom• February 22nd – USY “Israel Program” 7-8:30pm at TBTST• February 23rd – Matchilim “Balloon Tennis” 4:30-6pm at TBTST• February 23rd – Kadima “Top Chief” 7-8:30pm at TBTST• February 28th – Pre Kadima “Fish Bowl Game” 7-8:15pm at TBTST

SisterhoodJune Fletcher, Sisterhood Presidentsisterhood @TBTST.org

I’m very proud, honored and excited to be the newly elected President of our busy Sisterhood. Many thanks to Ellen Feldman for her outstanding efforts and accomplishments as prior Presi-dent. I sincerely hope I'll be able to match her fine example.

The Dreidel of Dreams was very successful and we received a lovely email of thanks and ap-preciation from Amanda Mor, the Program Manager of the Goodman Jewish Family Services. Toda raba to everyone who contributed so generously to this program.

At the end of January we had another evening of games. Fun, laughs and good times were had by all who participated!

Our monthly lecture series continues in February. Please come and join us on March 29 when Dr. Lilienthal will again lead our discussion and learning about another woman in the Torah. Even though the stories are thousands of years old, they still are relevant to us in 2017! As Dr. Lilienthal herself says, while the Torah is over 3700 years old, we each still discover something new in it every time we read it.

Don’t forget to hold the date of March 26 for our Fashion show. It’s sure to be absolutely fabulous! Invitations will follow soon! Last but not least, stop in at our gift shop (open Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings). We have many exciting new items that would be a perfect gift for your life cycle event!

Thought for the day: remember the power of a smile, its effect on others, and that it’s free therapy!

Kind regards, June

Good afternoon

I can’t even begin to tell you the happiness and gratitude I have witnessed as a result of all your assistance with the Dreidel of Dreams project. Many of my clients have already come in ranting and raving about what a wonderful time their children are having with their gifts and the tears of joy in their eyes. Please pass on my gratitude to all those involved. Hope you have a Healthy and Happy Hanukkah and a Happy New Year! Kind Regards, Amanda Mor, LCSWProgram Manager

So is religion a positive or negative force in the world today and what can we, as fathers, grand-fathers, uncles and male role models do about it? This is a profound question and volumes have been written about this. To be very brief, religious differences, actual or more likely perceived, have been the cause for much pain, misery, death and destruction in the history of the world and in many places today. This is made worse because the perpetrators of this misery are convinced they are doing it in the name of a superior being. Most of us do not have the ability to effect meaningful change in the world at large. However, it is incumbent

on us to try to effect some changes in our world, which is our families.

The Jewish tradition was one of the first to expound upon the need to take care of the less fortunate. It has es-poused fairness to others, treating the sick, taking care of the poor, and attempting, through peaceful study and interpretation to determine the meaning of our laws.

As leaders and co-leaders with our wives of the family it is our duty to discuss these concepts with our children and grandchildren. Asking them what it means to them to be Jewish and then discussing it with them is paramount. It may be for 5-10 minutes but if this is done monthly you can achieve more than teachers can in quadruple the time. You may learn something too!

Remember the Men’s Club Breakfast on January 22 at 9:30 AM. Discussion of security at major sporting and entertainment events. How they keep us safe and take care of temperamental performers. Bagels, Coffee, and a Smear will be served. RSVP (954) 815-2644.

FOREVER YOUNG BOOK CLUB

We invite you to join us in the new year. Just show up.

The book club at our temple consists of men and women who love to read and discuss what we learn and how we feel about the books we read, etc. There is also the option of attending only to listen. There is a moderator at each meeting. We look forward to each get-together as it is also an opportunity to get to know one another. Individuals make suggestions for books to read. Then we vote.

We send reminders by email to participants of when to meet once someone officially joins by attending a meeting. Also, what book to read is listed in the The Scroll each month and in the Shabbat weekly flyer.

We meet at 1 o’clock every third Wednesday afternoon of the month in our temple’s library. Books for the next couple of months are listed below.

How a DNA Test and a Dream Led Me to Judaism By Jeff Stoffa

Our Hazak program on February 19th will feature Jeff Stoffa as our speaker. His fascinating journey from being raised as a Gentile to discovering his Jewish ancestry will be of inter-est to all. Jeff is a “Just Found Out I’m a Jew, Jew” . People are discovering their Jewish roots thanks to modern DNA technology. In the past, many Jews were forced to convert to Christianity to escape being exiled or killed. Science is helping recover our “lost tribes.”Perhaps the most fascinating aspect is how many of these lost tribe Jews felt Jewish their whole lives and readily and eagerly converted back to Judaism. From an early age, without any knowledge of his Jewish ancestors, Jeff felt drawn to Judaism. Now Jeff helps other people learn how to use DNA testing and the Internet to unlock their own families’ secrets. Jeff Stoffa is an Account Development Executive for Akamai Technologies and worked in the past in front of the camera doing comedy on Spanish television. He lives in Miami

and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

Our program will begin at 11 am on Sunday, February 19th.Don’t miss this interesting and informative program.

Dear Friends,On Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 9:00am–12:00 pm, we will be hosting our third annual Six Million Steps to Ho-locaust Awareness walk at the Coral Springs Sportsplex Track, Coral Glades High School, 2700 Sportsplex Drive, Coral Springs. The purpose of this walk is to bring our Broward County community together and heighten the awareness of the atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust. With our cumulative steps, those who perished during the Holocaust will be remembered. As a member of our community, we are hopeful that we can count on your support to not only participate in this walk, which drew over 300 people from our community last year, but to help with a sponsorship of this important event this year. Because of your generosity, we can continue to educate our community and future generations to remember and never forget. In addition, with your support, we can raise scholarship money for teens in our community to attend the March of the Living; “a program where teens from around the world come together each year and bear witness to the destruction of the Holocaust in Poland and then travel to Israel to rejoice in the Jewish Homeland”. This trip provides a hands-on experience to Holocaust education and liberation in Israel.

The tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradition. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our com-munity depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.

In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.

Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc. or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not only be helping the Tree to grow,

but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and in the future. There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180.If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you. You can also email [email protected] or make your donation online at www.tbtst.org.

Thank you for your donation.

TBTST looks forward to acknowledging significant milestones in the lives of our members. Please notify the Temple Office when you have a birthday or anniversary to celebrate. We are constantly updating our records and we want to be timely in offering you a mazel tov. If you have a family member, or know of a fellow congregant, who is ailing or in the hospital, please notify us as well. The Rabbi tries to visit hospitalized members and we will include them in our Prayers for the Sick (see form elsewhere in this issue.) When you contact us, please include your phone number and make sure we have your email address.

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we re-ceive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand-knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.

YahzreitsOne of the most beautiful and meaningful customs of the Jewish people is remembering

those we have lost by memorializing our beloved through acts of Tzedakah and by saying Kaddish. The following Yahrzeits will be acknowledged and Kaddish will be said during

Shabbat Services on the dates below.

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $ _____________________________________________________Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for:Name (English) _________________________________________________________________________________(Hebrew)_______________________Mother's Name (Hebrew) ___________________________________________

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative.

All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle.

Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.

Making a donation is a wonderful way to acknowledge a special occasion, important date, promotion or award; send get well wishes or condolences; express appreciation for an act of kindness; and honor or remember a special person in your life. For more information please

call the Temple Office at 954.721.7660 ext. 110.
