Congratulations!

I know you’ve been awarded the London 2012 Inspire mark for your sporting adventure, and that’s good. When we went to Singapore to bid for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we were always very clear that it wasn’t simply about competitive sport.

It’s about encouraging you as leaders to do things slightly differently, and to figure out what values the Olympic and Paralympic Games give you, in terms of friendship, respect, courage and determination. As Scouts, these are all the things that you will understand anyway.

You have a big head start on everyone, because if you’re involved in Scouting, you know that those are your values as well.

Good luck,

Lord Sebastian Coe Chairman, London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games

I am delighted to join Lord Coe in commending The Scout Association for Our Sporting Adventure, and very pleased that the Peter Harrison Foundation has provided support for this resource.

This project will give hundreds of thousands of young people the chance to share the adventure, fun and ideals of the Olympic and Paralympic movements.

As a youngster in the 2nd Cheadle Scouts, I was introduced to sport and the outdoors through hikes and camps, where I learned teamwork, responsibility and leadership. I remember sailing on the Norfolk Broads, and my love of nautical activities continues today.

I hope that through this project, even more young people will take up the challenge and enjoy being involved in these great movements – Scouting and the Olympics and Paralympics.

ION GETTING STARTED

Here’s what you need to do:

Pick your team – You may compete as a single Network (local, District or County) or a combination of Networks (including members of different Networks) for the purposes of gaining ‘medals’.

Register – Whatever you decide, register your team online at www.scouts.org.uk/oursportingadventure and start planning your assault on the medal table.

Read the activities – They’re all in this pack and there’s plenty of time for you to get organised to take them all to extreme lengths.

Decide your path to victory – A bit of strategy will help you delegate tasks and mean that your contribution gets noticed. Record your progress online to collect your points and get you to the top of the medal table.

WELCOME TO OUR SPORTING ADVENTUREThe London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will bring over 200 nations of the world under one roof in a festival of sport and culture, united by common values. To celebrate the values of the Olympic and Paralympic movements, we invite you to compete in a series of activities and challenges – Our Sporting Adventure.

The challenges for Network have been designed to suit the flexible and sometimes spontaneous way the section meets. If you’re a Network that meets regularly, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to accumulate points for the challenge, so that you can compete fairly with the other sections. Even if your meetings are less frequent and more geared around events, these challenges are suitable for you to gain a lot of points in a short period of time.

THE WEBSITETo be in with a sporting chance of winning the national competition, you will need to register your team on the Our Sporting Adventure website at www.scouts.org.uk/oursportingadventure

Once you start accumulating points, log in regularly to record your progress, and you will see your team climbing up the medal table. It is important that you amass as many points as you can during the game period of 1 January 2012 to 30 September 2012.

To ensure fair play with the other sections, there is a cap of 1,400 points for each event.

5• At every Network event you attend, or District/County event for other sections, take your mega mascot, and get as many people to sign it as possible. You score points for signatures, and there is a sliding scale for categories of people who sign it, so keep a record.

• To add to the enjoyment, get as many photos of your mascot making new friends, and collate these in an album or video to post online.

• As the project continues, add your team’s points on the Our Sporting Adventure website.

SCORING SYSTEMYou get: • 1 point for every Network member• 2 points for every adult leader• 3 points for every youth Member of another

section (eg Beaver Scout)• 5 points for a Scout from another country• 10 points for a celebrity (A list only)• 25 points for an Olympic or Paralympic medallist.• Every time you pass 50 points you will gain a

bronze medal.

Note: There is a cap of 1,400 points for this challenge (and all Network challenges).

1. OUR SPORTING MASCOTSupersize your Network and make a mascot who will get you noticed and make new friends.VALUES Friendship, Respect, DeterminationSELF DEVELOPMENT AREA Community

• At a Network meeting, design and build a giant figure, who will be your mascot for the duration of your Our Sporting Adventure project.

• The mascot can be any creature or symbol, but must be twice the height of your tallest Network member.

• Use craft materials, dress it up and make something that represents you.

• As part of the design, make one part of it a giant piece of card or paper which people can add their signature to.

2. OLYMPIC VALUES: THE MOVIERelease your inner Spielberg and make an arty film on an inspiring subject – the Olympic values.VALUES All (your choice)SELF DEVELOPMENT AREA Skills and Development

• Get together as a Network and learn about the Olympic and Paralympic values. These are friendship, inspiration, excellence, determination, respect, equality and courage. Brainstorm what the words mean to you, and how these could be communicated in a film.

• Storyboard a 3-5 minute video about the Olympic values. You could focus on one or two, or relate them to the values that Scouting is built upon.

• Divide your team into the various roles needed to produce an efficient film. You might like to turn your meeting place into a studio or set, or scout locations that will inspire your viewer. Who will direct? Who will operate the camera? Who’s responsible for the sound, props, stunts and who is your onscreen talent? Who’s bringing the popcorn?

• Spend a meeting, or series of meetings, making your movie. You can allow for humour and improvisation.

• Do any post-production, such as animation or captions, music or visual effects.

• Upload your finished film to a video sharing website such as YouTube and post the link on facebook.com/scoutnetwork. Be sure that everything in your film complies with copyright and intellectual property law.

• Get points by getting as many people as you can to like your video on Facebook or watch it on YouTube.

• As the project continues, add your team’s points on the Our Sporting Adventure website.

SCORING SYSTEMYou get:• 1 point for every view on YouTube• 1 point for every like on Facebook• 1 point for every retweet on Twitter• 1 point for every person who watches the movie

at a live showing• Every time you get 100 points you will get a silver

medal , up to a maximum of 1,400 points.

7IDEAS FOR POTENTIAL GAMES

SPACEHOPPERBALL • Buy a few bouncy creatures for players to sit on

and erect a net at a lower height than you would for volleyball, but higher than tennis.

• With two teams of four and a specially measured court, play what is essentially volleyball, but with the handicap of having to pilot your spacehopper around the court of play.

• One bounce is allowed and you can ride one-handed.

• First team to 12 points wins a set; play best of three.

SPEED GOLF• Set up a nine-hole Frisbee golf course using tent

bags as the holes.• All players line up on the first tee.• Rather than aiming to take the least amount

of throws, it’s purely a race to the ninth hole, with everyone throwing at the same time (you might need different coloured discs to help differentiate).

• Judges may be needed to ensure fair play.

SCORING SYSTEMYou get: • 10 points for every time you play the game• 10 points for every additional country you play

the game in• 15 points for every time another Network plays

you at your game• 20 points for every time another section/SSAGO/

Guide Unit plays your game• 25 points if you get a team of non-Scouts to play• Every time you get 200 points you will get

a gold medal, up to a maximum of 1,400 points.

3. GOOD SPORTSInvent a sport and get it played by as many people, in as many places as possible.VALUES Excellence, Friendship, EqualitySELF DEVELOPMENT AREA Skills and Development

• Get together as a Network and invent a new sport or game, which could be played at a Network event. This could be a team sport or an individual sport, but you must devise the rules, produce any equipment needed to play it, and sufficiently test it to ensure it lives up to the Olympic and Paralympic values.

• Next, challenge another Network or section to play your sport. If they’ve invented one, you could exchange and compare your ideas. Regardless of the result, your team will accumulate medal points for every time you play the sport, and every time someone new tries it.

• You are welcome to adapt the rules of your sport as you discover what works best, and get feedback from the people you get to play it. If you’ve come up with something special, you may find that other teams ditch their invention and start to adopt yours. If this is the case, you will accrue points for each time they play it.

• With your sport fine-tuned and growing in popularity, use the spring and summer calendar of Network events to take your activity to a bigger audience. Organise a mass tournament of potential Olympic events and work out which one has the most fans.

• As the project continues, add your team’s points on the Our Sporting Adventure website.
