There is something very special about the thrill

of cruising in new waters and the sense of accom-

plishment upon completing an extended cruise.

To go beyond what most boaters do on a week-

end overnight or even a week or so marina hop-

ping requires boaters to leave their normal cruis-

ing areas and comfort zones.

The Cruise Planning course focuses on the

planning and preparation necessary for safe

enjoyable extended cruises on both inland and

coastal waters.

Sanibel School

Safe Boating Program

By Lt Marti Squitieri, AP

Members of the Sanibel Captiva Sail and Power

Squadron Education Team just completed another success-

ful eight week Safe Boating class for the sixth graders at The

Sanibel Middle School.

The objectives of the Safe Boating Class are to teach

students safe boating habits, to educate them about the

Florida boating laws, and to train them in making emer-

gency calls to the United States Coast Guard. As class man-

ager and instructor, I combine efforts with Mrs. Peggy

Drennan, a Sanibel Middle School teacher, to coordinate

the teaching of an extensive set of topics including

Planning a Boat Trip

Aids to Navigation

Knot Tying

Rules of the Road

Safety Devices

PFDs

Anchoring

using a VHF Radio

and, using a Global Positioning System.

During the first class the students are assigned to

boat crews. The crews earn points through a variety of ac-

tivities and quizzes. Class drills include finding and putting

on Life Jackets in a timely manner and reporting an emer-

gency situation to United States Coast Guard personnel,

who join us in the classroom. This year the two winning 6th

grade crews earned a field trip to the Fort Myers Beach US

Coast Guard Station including a ride on the USCG 41‘ boat

and participated in Man Overboard drills.

I would like to thank the following instructors who

taught and assisted with the 2011 class: Lynn Campean;

SEO P/C Ralph Sloan, AP; Lt/C Sami Lucas-Hurn, AP, and

Dick Squitieri, JN.

Teaching the middle school students is full of sur-

prises and is very rewarding. If you would like to make a

difference in the next generation of boaters, please contact

me at 239 395-9039 to participate in the next class begin-

ning in October.

Stay Current - - Stay Young

It is quite understandable that once we acquire the

necessary skills to survive in our active world, we become less

motivated to remain current with developing technology. The

marine industry offers a perfect example of how easy it is to

lose touch with progress.

On a recent cruise around the South Pacific and New

Zealand, I spent some time discussing navigation technolo-

gies with the first officer. What he told me will surprise even

the most experienced mariner. Prior to each cruise, he

downloads the latest ―British Admiralty Charts‖ to his

personal ‗I-pad‘. These approved commercial charts are

updated weekly, but his I-pad is over a year old. Once on-

board, he plugs the ships GPS system into his I-pad and this

is what is used for navigation. Of course, they carry paper

charts and celestial navigation is still considered primary,

but here is a major cruise ship navigating with a portable

personal computer that you and I can buy for under $400.

As Power Squadron members, we need to remain

responsive to technical developments. Offers to National,

for development of courses more applicable to today‘s boats

and equipment are not always welcomed. Once we fall

behind on these and other technologies it will become very

difficult to catch up.

If we at USPS are to continue our leadership in

nautical education, we should all try to stay current and

stay young.
