The Saluki Watch Dawg SIU Department of Public Safety

Many theft and burglary incidents reported to the Department of Public Safety can

be avoided by following these safety tips.

Lock your office door

Store valuables out of sight

Lock desk drawers and filing cabinets that contain valuable items or information

Do not leave personal and valuable items unattended

Keep a record and serial numbers for electronic items

Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to police

Do not prop open exterior doors to buildings on campus

Do not let people into buildings after hours that do not have a security pass

Close windows, blinds, and curtains before leaving

Most Common Items Stolen from an Office

Loose change and cash, backpacks, textbooks, electronic items, jewelry, wallets and

purses, anything of value.

BURGLARY PREVENTION How do you keep this guy out of your office?

BURGLARY PREVENTION How do you keep this guy out of your car?

If you bring a car to campus you can help us prevent auto-burglary. Thefts from vehi-

cles occur at all hours, day and night and generally have one thing in common: some-

thing to steal ... something valuable left in the car. Many auto-burglaries are crimes of

opportunity; they could be avoided had simple preventative steps been taken.

Auto-burglary prevention, like all crime prevention, involves limiting the criminal's

ability and/or opportunity to commit the crime. With very little time and effort, you

can make a huge difference in your vulnerability to auto-burglary.

Don’t leave valuables in your car. If you must leave stuff in your car, keep them

out of sight, locked in the glove box, or in the trunk

Lock your car, roll up windows

Park in busy, well-lite areas

Set alarms or anti-theft devices

Most Common Items Stolen from Vehicles

Loose change and cash, backpacks, gym bags, electronic items, jewelry, wallets and

purses, anything of value.

Officers Take to Dunkin’ Donuts Rooftop On Friday, May 20, 2016 officers from the SIU Police Department, Carbondale Police Department, Illi-

nois State Police and John A Logan Police took to the rooftop of the Carbondale Dunkin’ Donuts rais-

ing money and awareness for Special Olympics Illinois. This event was part of a statewide Dunkin’

Donuts Cop on a Rooftop that occurred at more than 230 Dunkin’ Donuts locations. As part of the Illi-

nois Law Enforcement Torch Run, officers raised more than $600,000 statewide.

Locally, officers raised over $4,000 in the event inaugural year. Guest received a free donut for any do-

nation made, and those who donated $10 or more received a free stainless steal coffee mug, free coffee

fill-up, and a free donut. In addition to the money raised by donations, Dunkin’ Donuts is furthering

its support by donating $15,000 to the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

What is the Law Enforcement Torch Run?

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest year around fundraising effort for Special Olympics Illinois. The Torch

Run has raised more than $39 million over 30 years while increasing awareness of Special Olympics Illinois athletes and their

accomplishments. Each year, more than 3,000 officers cover 1,500 miles carrying the Flame of Hope through the streets of their

hometowns and to the State Summer Games in Normal in June. The intrastate relay and its various fundraising projects have

two goals: to raise money and increase public awareness for the athletes of Special Olympics. The Torch Run has set a goal of

surpassing the $4.1 million raised in 2015.

What is Special Olympic Illinois?

Special Olympics Illinois is a not-for-profit organization offering year-round training and competition in

19 sports for more than 22,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities and more than 20,000 Young Athletes

ages 2-7 with and without intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics programs enhance physical fitness,

motor skills, self-confidence, social skills and encourage family support. The first Special Olympics games

were held at Soldier Field in July 1968; the program now is in more than 170 countries.

Local officers will participate in the Leg 11 Torch Run on June 8, carrying the Flame of Hope from Carbondale to Marion in a

12.1 mile run. More information about the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run and Special Olympics Illinois can be found at
