SALUKI STADIUM: THE INAUGURAL SEASON

More than just keeping scoreBY TODD HEFFERMANTHE SOUTHERN

In a room inside SIU Arena not nearlyas wide as the videoboard he willcontrol, Chris Hagstrom will orchestrateSouthern Illinois University’s footballvisuals this year.

Hagstrom, SIU’s new director of videoservices, now calls an upstairs bunker ina live construction zone home. He spentthe previous four years with theSouthern Illinois Miners.

And what a nice home it is. Next to the42-inch Vizio high-definition televisionsits three edit stations, all outfitted withthe latest software called Final Cut 7.The new computers came from theCollege of Business and UniversityCommunications.

Hagstrom’s staff will include himself,a graduate and undergraduate studentand a class of 15 people.

“This is everything you could ask for,and more,” Hagstrom said.

“At this level, this is the high end. Foran FCS school, this is one of the top-of-the-line systems we can get. We can dowhat’s similar at Texas, and some of theproduction that you see with the BigTen, or some of the pro teams.”

About 12 people will work onproducing the video replays, promotionsand in-game features fans will see atfootball games, Hagstrom said.

They will man four cameras, producehighlight reels that will likely runaround halftime, and run in-gameproduction.

The Kiss Cam? Probably coming toSaluki Stadium. Coaches’ Corner, wherea staffer will interview a Saluki coachabout the upcoming game? It’s in theworks.

Make a play? See it on the videoreplay, plus, chances are, your mug shotor likeness up on the board soonafterwards.

SIU could spend a lot of time watchingits own highlights this season. TheSalukis will start the season No. 5 in thecountry in The SportsNetwork/Fathead.com poll.

SALUKI STADIUM: THE INAUGURAL SEASON

The MacMcAndrew Stadium was home to the Salukis for more than 70 years

THE SOUTHERN

Before the construction of McAndrewStadium, Southern Illinois University’sfootball team played at Bayliss Field.

Bayliss Field was east of the the IllinoisCentral railroad tracks, just north andeast of the current structure. Footballhad been approved as an activity at theschool since 1898. Records indicate theplaying field used by the school wasnamed Bayliss Field on Feb. 3, 1903. Anewspaper account from the 1909football game played between SouthernIllinois State Normal and Ewing foundthe playing field “as dusty as a countryroad.”

By the mid-1930s, a drive had begun toreplace that dusty field. Athletic directorand football coach William McAndrewwas named chairman of the fundraisingeffort.

Original construction costs for thestadium were estimated at $40,000.

However, McAndrew secured WorksProgress Administration labor for theproject. In addition, he obtained $62,000in federal grants. The school was to raisean additional $20,000. By the time thestadium was completed in 1938, the totalcost was $150,000. The original seatingcapacity was 5,000.

Construction on the stadium began inspring 1937. Newspaper accountsindicate McAndrew inspected the finalplans April 15, 1937. Construction wasscheduled to begin a week later.

In the meantime, McAndrew’sfundraising efforts secured donationsfrom far and wide. Among items found inMcAndrew’s scrapbooks was a $10 checkwritten by Fred “Brick” Young, sportseditor at The Bloomington Pantagraphand a close friend of McAndrew’s. Thecheck was dated Jan.19, 1936, and isbelieved to be one of the first donationstoward the new structure.

During the next year, severalorganizations in Carbondale and in theCarbondale area became involved withfundraising.

Another part of the effort was anappeal to about 9,000 former students.

McAndrew also devised the “buy a bagof cement” campaign during 1937.

Donors were urged to give $1, roughly thecost of a bag of cement. The stadium wasused during the 1937 season but was farfrom complete. The Maroons, asSouthern Illinois University teams wereknown until the Saluki mascot wasadopted as the result of a student bodyvote in 1951, lost the first game played atthe new stadium, 17-0, to WesternIllinois.

Donors participating in the “buy a bagof cement” campaign were given freetickets to the remaining games thatseason, which SIU finished 2-7.

Newspaper accounts from 1938indicate the university receiveddonations from area theater groups and

civic organizations such as the chamberof commerce, Elks Lodge and RotaryClub.

The stadium was completed after theseason and formally dedicated at the Oct.29, 1938, Homecoming game, a 6-0 lossto Illinois State. The original structurewas known as Southern Illinois TeachersCollege Stadium.

McAndrew resigned as football coachafter the season. He coached two years inthe stadium that bears his name.

The stadium was formally dedicated inMcAndrew’s honor Oct. 22, 1949. One ofthe featured speakers was HarryLedbetter, captain of McAndrew’s firstfootball team.

The stadium remained much the sameuntil a lighting system was installedduring the 1950 season. The first gameunder the lights at McAndrew Stadiumwas a 44-13 SIU victory over EasternMichigan on Nov. 10. A new lightingsystem was installed in the 1960s.

During the late 1960s, a movement tobuild a new stadium began. Theuniversity had just completedconstruction on SIU Arena.

“For them to become a major power, they needed a new stadium,” said formercoach Dick Towers. “It was not to be oncampus. As we went out recruiting, wehad a picture of it, and we used that inour recruiting.

SALUKI STADIUM: THE INAUGURAL SEASON

The ‘wow’ factorSaluki Stadium brings even more excitement to SIU football

BY TODD HEFFERMANTHE SOUTHERN

Southern Illinois University’s footballteam won three of the last fiveMissouri Valley Football Conference

titles with one of the oldest stadiums inall of Division I, so you can imagine theprogram’s enthusiasm for the new15,000-seat facility opening this week.

Without the “wow” factor of some ofthe other stadiums in the league, like theFargodome in North Dakota State and theIce Castle in Youngstown, Ohio, SIUbuilt the longest conference-gamewinning streak in history (14).Surrounded by three high-definitiontelevision screens in a new locker roomfit for the Kansas City Chiefs, the historythat built the stadium wasn’t lost onSaluki junior center Bryan Boemer.

“It’s the guys that came before us thatreally earned a lot of this stuff, and, thanks to them,” Boemer said. “They’renot here any more, and I appreciate themgetting Saluki Way rolling. You just comein here, and you look around, and itmakes you want to play better. It makesyou feel like you have to earn it more, after not being there those last few years. Now, starting to play, you got a nicelocker room, so, you gotta be a greatteam. Nice field. We gotta back it up.”

SIU will enter the 2010 season witheven higher aspirations than last season, when the Salukis finished 11-2 andreached the quarterfinals of the FootballChampionship Subdivision playoffs. TheSalukis return 10 starters, six on anoffense that led the MVFC in scoring lastyear at 32.8 points per game. Tworeturning starters on defense, cornerbackKorey Lindsey and safety Mike McElroy, are candidates for the Buck BuchananAward, which goes to the top defensiveplayer in the FCS.

Kicker Kyle Dougherty, a four-yearstarter, will enter the season 76 pointsfrom tying Craig Coffin’s school recordof 379 set between 2002-06.

SIU will host at least six games at the$25.3 million stadium a parking lot awayfrom SIU Arena. Saluki fans bought aschool-record 2,560 season ticketsbefore the first week of June.

Fans will be about 40 feet closer to theaction. Saluki Stadium will feature a 20-foot-by-40-foot videoboard withreplay capabilities, new restrooms andconcession areas, a club room, and atwo-story press box with 12 air-conditioned suites. A second scoreboardsits in the southeast corner of the facility.

SIU athletic director Mario Moccia

expects a big response from the Salukicommunity.

“We have been in the playoffs sevenstraight years, won five of the last seventitles. I think, when people see thosestats, they might envision these greatfacilities, and they didn’t exist before, so,our facilities now match up with thesuccess we’ve had on the field,” Moccia

said. “I think it also gives us theopportunity, from the playoffstandpoints, is you still have to bid on therounds, but one of the criteria for hostinga playoff game is the facility.

“They’ll be taking into the account thebid, the geography, but that was anegative in the past. Now, obviously, itwill be a huge positive.”

SALUKI STADIUM: THE INAUGURAL SEASON

Saluki coaches moved to the top of thefacilities list with the only new stadium inthe FCS (Richmond is opening a newstadium, but it is part of a multi-milliondollar renovation of an existing facility).SIU coach Dale Lennon hopes it has asimilar effect that the Alerus Center had inGrand Forks, N.D. The city of Grand Forksopened the 12,283-seat, $80 million domedstadium in 2001, the same year Lennon ledthe Fighting Sioux to the Division IInational championship. UND led the nationin attendance in 2004 and 2005.

“What I’m hoping is there’s a dominoeffect with the fans, where we get the fansexcited about things, and they start showingup in huge numbers, and, all of a sudden, they’re a part of the game that maybe didn’texist before,” Lennon said. “That’s whenyou can really have a steam-rolling effectand have something really special, andthat’s what happened when we moved intothe Alerus at the University of NorthDakota. Our attendance just shot throughthe roof. Noise was a factor at every game. Itbecame a contagious atmosphere.”

Carbondale nativeEverett Boykin couldn’tkeep his eyes off the fieldat Thursday’s SouthernIllinois Universityscrimmage.

After years of watchingthe Salukis take a top 25national ranking into 73-year-old McAndrewStadium, the team’sfacility had finallymatched its reputation.

“Eventually, you got tokeep up,” said Boykin, whonow lives in Decatur.

“McAndrew served itspurpose, but it was time.”

Before this season, SIUowned the oldest facilityin the Missouri ValleyFootball Conference. By along shot.

The Mac, which openedin 1937 but was notcompleted until 1938,hosted its 73rd and finalseason last year. It was 24years older than the next-oldest stadium in thenine-team league, SouthDakota State’s Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, whichwas built in 1962.

Beginning this week,

SIU will own the neweststadium in the FootballChampionshipSubdivision. SalukiStadium will be the firstnew facility to open in theFCS since Campbell (N.C.)unveiled 3,500-seatBarker-Lane Stadium in2008.

Richmond put $25 million into the new E.Claiborne RobinsStadium, but, technically,it is an expansion of theold First Market Stadium, which houses the Spiders’lacrosse, soccer and trackteams.

Saluki Stadium (15,000)will be the first newfacility in the MVFC sinceYoungstown State opened20,630-seat StambaughStadium in 1997.

Fans will be about 40 feet closer to theaction, as the new stadiumdoesn’t have a track likeThe Mac. David Clark, SIUlinebacker Houston

Walker’s grandfather, saidthat could breed a moreintimidating atmospherefor opponents.

“It’s a little hard to say,” Clark said as hewatched Thursday’sscrimmage. “They should. If they had a little bitbetter following, they mayhave a better home-fieldadvantage.”

SIU drew an average of9,297 fans in its six homegames last year.

The Salukis sold arecord-2,560 seasontickets back in June, breaking the previousrecord of 2,442 in 2008.
