During recent years, the Par-tridge Green couple have vis-ited some of the world’s mostexotic destinations - Fiji, NewZealand, China, Alaska, Braziland the Caribbean.

But while such trips might berelatively common, Doreen andNoel’s story is a little more re-markable, for Noel has beenwheelchair bound since suffer-ing a stroke, aged 68, in 1996.

During their many expedi-tions, Doreen took down notes, and has now penned what shecalls ‘a human-interest storyabout illness and recovery’called Round the World in aWheelchair.

Doreen’s book demonstrates

that with Noel’s resilience andhis wife’s no- nonsense devo-tion, life is still as rich and en-joyable as ever, and that theirtravelling days, far from beingover, are only just beginning.

Doreen said: “I kept a diarywhile we were travelling andwhen we returned home I justtransferred the best bits intothe book.

As you can see, the Town Hallhas probably endured worsethan being turned into a fruitand veg store.

During one election it wasturned into a giant monumentof propaganda. Perhaps wemight see (Peace party Candi-date) Jim Duggan’s name allover it in May!

But it’s fair to say that thehistoric Town Hall is more re-spected, revered even, in thisday and age.

So when last week’s editionof The Resident hit the newsstands with a big picture ofwhat the Town Hall “mightlook like” if it was used as aBill’s Produce store, it trig-gered a quick response fromthose eager to see it main-tained for community use.

Local charity, the Blue FlashMusic Trust expressed "severedoubt" about the announce-ment in this newspaper ofBill's Produce being open inthe summer at the site of Hor-sham Old Town Hall.

Robert Mayfield, Treasurerof the Trust said: "HorshamDistrict Council seems to re-main 'in denial' about the truestatus of the Old Town Hallrestaurant project.

“There is no confirmation bythe council that Bill has signedon the dotted line, or alterna-tively, whether he has signedwith various caveats pendingthe outcome of current issues.

“Indeed, Horsham DistrictCouncil seemed very keen toinform us in two recent lettersto the Trust that no contracthad been signed with Bill'sProduce. The Council also re-fused a Freedom of Informa-tion Request partly on thebasis that other potential bid-ders might be deterred if cur-rent arrangements fellthrough."

Martin Jeremiah, BusinessConsultant to the Trust con-firmed:

"The first issue appears tobe the current formal investi-gation by the District Auditor.

This includes scrutiny of theCouncil's dealings over the OldTown Hall and questions sur-rounding the way a contractmight be awarded to Bill's Pro-duce.

“In my view, there is strong

evidence to suggest that a bidevaluation between Bill's and apotential competitor was notall that it should have been. In-deed, there appears to be somedoubt as to whether the otheralleged bidder at that timemade a formal bid at all.

“There is also no current ex-planation as to why a marketvalue bid of £75,000 became

£52,500. “The District Auditor

has also been asked to ruleon the unusual practice ofpaying for the planningfee and cost of plans forwhat HDC claimed to bean 'individual applicant'to the Government Of-fices. This claim there-fore bypassed the normaldecision makingprocesses due to be exer-cised.

“Finally and most fun-damentally perhaps, isthe issue of the currentchallenge to the plan-ning application on thebasis that, as owner andapplicant, HDC did nothave the required de-gree of independenceto decide the application.

Furthermore, the Councilseems to have slipped up withthe lack of consultation in re-spect of the proposed in-fillingof the Old Town Hall arches, details of which appeared late

andunannounced on the Council'splanning website.

Robert Mayfield, on behalf ofthe Trust, added: "We werevery happy to meet BillCollinson of Bill's Produce in

March of last year. Wehad a pleasant meetingin Lewes and Billseemed to understandthat we would be verypleased to welcome himto Horsham, but not atthe expense of this his-torical building and aloss of essential mediumsized performance spacewith wonderful acousticsbased around past usesas a Court Room and oldstyle Council Chamber.”

Mr Mayfield added: “Atthe end of the day, thereare plenty of restaurantsand plenty of vacant sitesadapted for restaurantuse.

“However, there is onlyone iconic Horsham OldTown Hall, the townspeo-

ple’s historic community build-ing in its town centre location."

Horsham District Council de-clined to comment on thepoints raised by the Trust.

Live musicvenueRobert Mayfieldtalks about thegreat acousticsof the venue, andhe’s not makingthat up - there isa great sound inthe building, and it’s been used for many gigs by local bandsand music associations. Good local venues arein short supply, particularly after the loss of theBlack Cat club last year.

So what else isit good for?

Potential featuresOn a lighter note,it would make agreat focal pointfor public speak-ing debates (per-haps an idea forthe general elec-tion), and would be an obviousand ideal vantage point for Fathers for Justicecampaigners seeking publicity in Horsham. Itwould also make a great ‘fort’ for a giant game oftown centre paintball.

Markets andeventsThere is stillscope for it to beused more forcommunityevents. It is usedfor the occa-sional flea mar-ket (Record fairs are held thereregularly) and exhibitions but is not utilised toooften. It was also useful during last year’s Pi-azza Italia for Scalextric events

Some people find achange of career quitedaunting.

But not Horsham’s JohnO’Sullivan.

We wouldn’t even wantto think about what hisschool careers officer sug-gested as a future line ofemployment for John, butwe doubt it wasnewsagent, showman andpolitician.

John is well known totownsfolk as the owner oftwo stores, the newsagentat Horsham Station, andThe Candy Box in The Car-fax.

Next week, he takes hisfirst steps onto the stage -his self-penned showNewsagent Provocateur isa sell-out at the CapitolTheatre (see review in Feb26th edition) which he

hopes will open newdoors in entertainment.

But now he has re-vealed that he is consider-ing entering the race tobecome Horsham’s nextMP at the next election.

John said: “I’m reallythinking about it, and Ithink a lot of peoplewould vote for me. I cer-tainly think I could appealto the younger genera-tion.

”But the trouble is, Iwouldn’t want to justenter for the fun of it, I’dhighlight real issues andI‘d want to win.

“But there’s no way thatFrancis Maude is notgoing to win it (for theConservatives).

“For me, he does noth-ing for the town. Hor-sham’s MP should besomeone you see in townevery day, using the shops

here, talking to people, not just somebody whopops by for the occasionalphotoshoot in the CountyTimes.”

For now though, he isbusy enough running twoshops and preparing forhis show. And John admitsthere are a few nerves.

“It’s scary. People forgetthat I’ve never done any-thing like this. I’m basi-cally just someone whoworks in a shop that has adream of doing somethingdifferent, and this is achance.”

John’s show sold outquickly, and the short pro-motional videos he hascreated (and we mustsay are really quiteimpressive) havebeen big hits onYoutube and

the NewsagentProvocateur website.

But when itcomes to the show, his lips are sealed.

“I’m not going toreveal too muchabout the show butthere are a few sur-prises. But I justwant to do it now -I’m tired of peoplecoming into theshop and saying‘Ooh, not longnow!’”

With the Laybrook Landfillpetition now in the hands ofthe decision-makers, cam-paigners in Ashington haveturned their attentions to an-other site under threat.

West Sussex County Council’sMinerals and Waste Policy Doc-ument has outlined a numberof potential sites, includingRock Quarry in Washington, and a potential open compost-ing site at Broadbridge Farm.

Perhaps wary of beingcharged with NIMBYism (NotIn My Back Yard), Ashington’sparish councillors are keen topoint out that they are in favourof recycling green waste andother recycling/sustainabilityprojects (as opposed to an un-sustainable landfill type activ-ity).

But they are certainly do not

feel that this site at Broad-bridge Farm is not suitable forthe proposed development formany reasons.

An open air composting sitewould see an estimated 60,000tonnes of compostable wastefrom brown-topped bins beingdeposited there each year.

In a statement, the parishcouncil said: “It must be re-membered that there are farmbuildings (office, barns andfarmyard) less than 100m fromthe proposed site.

“The farm owner would rou-tinely be exposed to high levelsof odour and airborne particlesall of the time that he is work-ing on the farm.”

The statement adds: “Thereis a potential for noise pollutionfrom the machinery operatingat the site as well as the addi-

tional lorries on the A24. Ash-ington Community Plan 2010lists noise reduction from theA24 and reducing the numberof lorries through the village asvery high priorities.”

Brookhurst Wood andLanghurstwood Quarry in Hor-sham and Laybrook are also onthe list of potential sites fornon-inert landfill. ChantryLane, Star Road Trading Estateand Golding Barn are other po-tential sites.

The deadline for comments isFebruary 26th to [email protected]

It’s fair to say that there are anumber of issues surroundingparking in the district.

There’s some niggling prob-lems - why do the parking ma-chines in the town centre nottake 5p coins, and why do theHop Oast machines insist on cor-rect change?

Some are more irritable - whyshould those who use the gym atthe Pavilions or take their childfor a 30 minute swimming lessonfork out for the standard ‘up to 3hours’ parking, which has re-cently become more expensive?

And then there’s the villageparking disc scheme, which inplaces like Billingshurst has cre-ated almost as many problems asit solved in the first place. Manyvisitors unfamiliar with thescheme tend to drive on in a stateof confusion!

And now, just over a weeksince some parking charges wereincreased across the district, anew working group has been set

up by Horsham District Council’sScrutiny and Overview Commit-tee at the request of a parishcouncil in the district.

The aim of the group is to lookat the issues caused by inappro-priate and illegal parking.

The new group will be lookingat the following:l To review existing planningpoliciesl To review the existing en-forcement regulations and meth-

ods of deliveryl Review which measures canbe taken to stop pavement andverge parkingl To lay out clearly what actionscan be taken in the event of aprobleml Review the reasons why peo-ple park on the verges and pave-mentsl To review the impact of park-ing on pavement and vergesl Recommend changes to poli-

cies for future developmentsCllr David Sheldon, Chairman

of the Scrutiny and OverviewCommittee at the council, said:“We will be collecting evidenceto assess what needs to be doneto improve the situation.

“We intend to review what iscurrently in place, and once wehave the results we’ll look to rec-ommend changes to various poli-cies.”

Here at The Resident we’veseen Cllr Sheldon on several oc-casions walking along WorthingRoad, near our offices by the li-brary. We’ve no idea where hemight have got the idea thatthere’s a problem with inappro-priately parked cars in Hor-sham...

It was far too early a start,as the alarm went off at6am on a Sunday!

I managed to drag myselfout of bed and ate loads ofWeetabix to get me ready forthe exploits of the day.

I had help in the warm up,chasing my daughter up anddown the train on the way tothe ‘Big Smoke’. It then feltlike I had already started thechallenge, having to carry mybag and Ellie in her buggy upand down all the variousflights of stairs in the under-ground!

I arrived at the venue, 30 StMary Axe. It was almost time,so headed outside for the of-ficial warm-up. Ellie also de-cided to join in.

Heading back inside, hun-dreds of people were waitingto go up the Gherkin. Stand-ing next to a fellow runner, Inoticed he had one of thenumbers I had wanted, 30.He did kindly offer to swapnumbers but my 230 was suf-ficient bearing in mind thiswas the 2nd of 30 challenges.

On your marks, get set, go

go go (as my daughter says).“I started fast enough, then

slowed almost immediately, realising it wasgoing be a killeron the calves.Reaching the 5thfloor I had to stopto check onsomeone thatwas feeling dizzybut she said shewas fine, so off Iwent again.

After only 15flights, the painstarted buildingup in my legs, with only a slightrespite everytime I turned thecorners at theend of each flight. While some run-ners had rapidlydisappeared upthe stairs, I wasovertaking thosefor whom climb-ing the buildingwas one of the hardest thingsthey had ever done. My hatgoes off to them.

The time and the 1,037steps seemed to be going pastpretty quickly – I

thoughtI was

doing well but on the 29thfloor someone over took me!

Heading up past the 30thfloor – shivers went down myneck, realising the impor-tance of the number, but thenthe moment passed into mylegs – as they were “burning”with the build up of lacticacid.

And there it was, the 38thfloor – the final step – Chal-lenge 2 was completed in atime of 7 minutes, 49 sec-onds.

The views were stunning, and after a quick interviewwith a reporter, a hugethanks to David Painter andthe HUTC (Hot Under TheCollar) for their time, Iheaded back down theGherkin, by lift thankfully thistime.

“Last year, the sun was shining,BBQ was going and local brewbeer was served alongside withmany different soft drinks and teaand coffee. It was a very success-ful event.

“Everybody enjoyed themselvesand we managed to fundraise forthe school. In the evening, Chi-nese takeaway was delivered tothe school by order and then rockbands were playing until mid-night.

“Due to the success of last year, and requests from people whocame to the show, we have de-cided to hold this event again atthe same place this year on 24thJuly 2010.”

Brooklands Studios in Hor-sham is expanding with thelaunch of several new classesin March.

Amongst the new additionsfor Brooklands, run by CaseyStone, is a Littlefoot class, where toddlers can learn basicdance steps to their favouritepop music and film hits.

There will also be an adultfitness club launched and a Pri-mary Dance Club for childrenaged 5 and 6.

Brooklands has earned a finereputation for its street danc-ing routines, but in recentyears has branched out to in-corporate singing, tap dancing, and various interpretations of

modern dance. The group’sshows, the most recent ofwhich was the Pied Piper, fea-ture a blend of singing anddance numbers.

One number might see sen-ior dancers in an edgy hip hopnumber, the next could seemore than a dozen primaryschool aged children singing aDisney song!

The group was formed byCasey in 2001, and began togrow at around the time whenCasey was a finalist on the in-augural series of BBC1’sprimetime Saturday nightshow, Strictly Dance Fever.

But an horrific broken leg, sustained during a freak acci-

dent while watching her hus-band - Horsham captain MattStone - play a rugby match, putthe dance studio’s future injeopardy.

but now the future looksbright once again.

Casey said: “It has been arollercoaster ride and I’m luckythat I have some very loyaldancers at Brooklands.

“The principal dancers allpulled together when I was re-covering and kept it going, andnow the dance school is begin-ning to thrive once again.

“At the moment, we are hav-ing to meet for classes at Hor-sham rugby club, but we’rehopeful of finding a permanent

arrangement in the town cen-tre before too long.

“Towards the end of the yearwe’ll be staging another bigshow, which is wonderful forthe dancers and the parents, and the new members willhave the opportunity to be in-volved in that.”

Unlike some other danceschools, there is not the chanceto pick up dancing qualifica-tions, with Casey’s focus beingvery much geared towards afun and friendly school withlow fees for members.

For details of classes, feesand productions visit

www.brooklandsstudios.co.ukor call Casey on 07547 066025.

“It had become a bit of a dive andwas attracting some unsavoury types, but we have been changing that. It’staken some time but we’re starting tosee the results of the hard work now.”

The words of David Hyde, who hasbeen landlord at the Southwater pubfor a little over six months now, andhas made sweeping changes.

As the picture above shows, localales are back on the menu, as the CockInn goes back to being a traditionalfamily pub.

Ales by three of Horsham’s brew-eries are on tap: Hepworth’s Prospect,Welton’s Export Stout and W.J King’sHorsham Best Bitter, as well as SussexMild, while framed pictures donatedby the village historical society haveadded an air of authenticity for a tra-ditional pub.

After a short period of time whenthe Inn became an Indian restaurant, roast dinners are back on the menu, with full English breakfast served onweekend mornings.

It’s all change on the inside and out-side, with a fresh coat of paint andnew signage brightening up the exte-rior and on the inside new woodenflooring and improved seating havemade the pub far more welcoming.

The garden is very much a work inprogress, but there are big plans forthe summer.

David said: “It was a mess out there.

There were brambles 12 foot highand the grass was really long. The old-est beer can we found was from 1983,so that’s how long it’s been sincethere has been a good clear-up outthere. It took a long time to clear andthere’s more work to do.

“But it’s looking a lot better now. We’ve cleaned up the barbecue sowe’ll be using that in the summer. We’ve also put in a chicken run and

children will be able to throw feed in.“We’ll be introducing some other

things for children too. The idea isthat we make it much more of a familypub and make good use of the gar-den.”

You can’t help but be impressedwith the changes at the Cock Inn, es-pecially as, so far, the new manage-ment have found it difficult to turn thepub’s fortunes around.

David has tried to create more of acafe feel at the top end. There’s a cou-

ple of sofa chairs now in place, as wellas high chairs for toddlers. Childrencan play with toys, and there’s even ababy changing room!

David said: “It was a little formal upthere but now we’ve changed itaround and we’re hoping that peoplewill find us a good place to comealong for a coffee and a sandwich.

“We were offering quite a varied se-lection of food but we have changedthat. We now offer a full sandwichmenu along with just a couple of maincourses.

“Then at the weekend we offer afull breakfast menu from 10am-12pmand roast dinner on a Sunday from12-5pm, and that’s going really well.

“We source our food locally, usingHutching’s butchers in PartridgeGreen, and word is starting to getaround about what we are doing here.

“It does take a while. I’ll be outsidesweeping and someone will walk byand say ‘it’s nice to see the pub look-ing how it should do’.

“We’re still struggling even now be-cause of the pub’s past reputation, butthere’s great potential here.

“We’re not the finished article justyet, but we’re getting there.”

Already the pub has establishedpool, darts and bar billiards teams(you can also play table football at thepub) and a number of games such asthe Joker Hunt provide the regularswith good entertainment.

It’s well worth a visit, if not now,

then certainly in the summer whenDavid and his team will have hope-fully created a pleasant garden areafor families.

For now, it’s great to seeSouthwater’s historicpub back in goodhands.

All change at the Inn

Will rises fall flat?Lack of funding for themortgage sector con-tinues to be a con-cern for propertymarket experts.

Around half ofmortgage brokerswho responded to thePlatform survey saidthey were concernedabout the availability offunds to the mortgagesector.

The Council of Mort-gage Lenders (CML) isalso fearful. It warned thisweek of a £300billionshortfall in the amountthey will be able to lendwhich would normally befilled by savers' deposits.

This funding gap hasbeen filled through gov-ernment schemes duringthe current economic cri-sis, but these run out infour years time.

The CML is warningthat first time buyerscould be affected in thecoming years as lenders

lookto re-strict loans to those witha large deposit.

The UK could be at risk“of a chronic under-sup-ply of credit and the ra-tioning of mortgages forcustomers for many yearsto come," says the CML.

Landlords are also con-cerned by the lack ofmortgage finance. Half oflandlords who want to ex-pand their portfolios saythey are being frustratedby the lack of mortgage fi-nance, according to a sur-vey conducted by LSLProperty Services, whichowns the Your Move andReeds Rains lettingschains.

Mortgage brokers joined thedebate about house prices thisweek.

According to a survey by Plat-form, The Co-operative Bank’s in-termediary lender, three quartersof mortgage brokers are predict-ing house price rises of up to 5%during 2010.

A similar proportion believethere will be an increase this yearin interest rates, which the Bank ofEngland this week decided to re-tain at 0.5%.

Three quarters believe interestrates will rise to 1% by the end ofthe year.

Two thirds of those surveyedalso believe business in the mort-gage sector will be better in 2010compared with last year.

David Tweedy, director of Plat-form, said: "Intermediaries areconfident the next 12 months willbe positive for the market and thatthe sector is ready to do business."

“In contrast the Halifax is pre-dicting that house prices will re-main stable for much of the year.

House prices rose by 0.6% dur-ing January, according to latest fig-ures from the Halifax.

While this is the seventh monthin a row that the lender hasrecorded a rise in prices the Hali-fax’s housing economist Martin

Ellis points out that the rise in Jan-uary is below the monthly averagerise of 1.1% for the previous sixmonths.

He concludes that prices are setto remain flat for the rest of 2010,adding that there are signs thatmore people are putting theirhomes up for sale, which is likelyto put the brakes on further pricerises.

The recent rises in prices ofprime central London propertiesare also slowing down, accordingto latest figures from estateagency Knight Frank.

Lack of funding for the mort-gage sector continues to be a con-cern for property market experts.

UK homeowners have learnt the les-sons of the credit crunch, accordingto one finance expert.

Ed Bowsher, head of consumer fi-nance at lovemoney.com, says that re-cent figures from the Bank of England'sLending to Individuals report showthat homeowners are trying to repairtheir finances and save, which he be-lieves is "absolutely the right thing todo".

Additionally the report revealed thatmortgage lending increased by a figureof £1.2 billion during December incomparison with the previous month.

Mr Bowsher describes this as "a verymodest kick upwards", adding that thestatistics could be attributable to thefact that there are an increasing num-ber of good mortgage deals coming onto the market.

He states that despite the fact thatthe recession has officially ended, hedoes not expect there to be dramaticrises in mortgage lending figures in theimmediate future as consumers are"still wary".

The latest Nationwide ConsumerConfidence Index recorded a threepoint increase in January to 73 percent.

Stamp out badlandlords

Legislation that is already in place inthe UK should be used to stamp outthe worst landlords to ensure thatrenters receive the best quality ofhousing, it has been suggested.

Alan Ward, chairman of the Residen-tial Landlords Association, states thatadditionally, the organisation has an-nounced an accreditation scheme, which is hoped to provide better stan-dards for tenants.

His comments come in response tothe announcement of new governmentmeasures, which will give people wholive in buy-to-let properties the chanceto give online feedback on their land-lords.

The move is hoped to help tenantsfind safer and better homes to rent, while offering extra support if prob-lems with their landlords or accommo-dation occur.

Housing minister John Healey, whenannouncing the plans, also added thata new housing hotline will be open forbusiness by the summer.

When you let with choicesYou get a lot more than

Highly competitive fees

• As a member of the Government backed National Approved Lettings Scheme, Choices is fully bonded for Lettings and Management which means all our client money is where it should be. Our advice to landlords is never let a property through an agent unless you are sure they are financially sound.

• Because we have over 1200 properties under management we can take advantage of dedicated systems which enables us to manage your property on a cost effective efficient basis.

• Because we have been in business over 20 years and we have several local offices, a long list of corporate clients, high profile local advertising and a well known web site, we let properties quickly and achieve the highest rents with least possible void periods which means you get a better return on your investment.

• A standard feature of our full management service is a guarantee which protects you against unpaid rent and legal fees which means you get total peace of mind.

• We do not charge extra for rent collection of rent chasing.

• As a growing company we aim to be market leaders in local lettings which means we welcome the opportunity of being put to the test.

• Finally we believe that the overall package we are offering means that no local landlords interested in obtaining the best return on their investment can afford to let without first talking to Choices.

Ford grew its January car sales figures by al-most 1,200 units according to new industryfigures..

Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus continued as thefirst and second best sellers respectively in theUK market.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers andTraders confirms pole position for Ford afterthe first month of 2010 trading. The

Blue Oval's 22,128 car sales in January wereover five per cent up on 12 months ago. Ford'stotal was 6,122 cars ahead of its nearest rival.

BMW’s class-leading Sports Activity Vehicle, the BMW X5, will receive an array of designand engine changes offering even greaterperformance and lower emissions, whilstalso updating its look.

The new BMW X5 will be on sale from 5 June.Three new engines will be launched for the

xDrive30d, xDrive40d – replacing thexDrive35d – and the xDrive50i – replacing thexDrive48i. All of the new powerplants nowmeet EU5 standards.

The year marks 75 years of the Jaguar nameon both road and race cars.

As a continuation of this great heritage,Jaguar can confirm it will return to the famedLe Mans 24 hours.

With a total of seven wins, Jaguar is the singlemost successful British make in the race’s his-tory. Jaguar will return to Le Mans this year lin-ing up on the starting grid on 12th June 2010with an XKR GT2 run by JaguarRSR.

It’s been a bad week for Toyota.Problems with a sticking accel-erator pedal has meant thejapanese manufacturer is recall-ing millions of cars.

And while Toyota has been quickto point out that reported prob-lems are extremely rare, the audioclip of the 911 call made by adriver in America who lost hisbrakes at 120mph, resulting in thedeath of all four people in the car,has raised fears.

He was driving a Lexus, a divi-sion of the Toyota group.

Miguel Fonseca, managing direc-tor of Toyota GB Plc has reassuredUK customers about the safety oftheir vehicles.

“Toyota is very sorry about theconcern caused to its customersabout the safety of their vehicles bythe recall we have announced to fixan issue with the accelerator pedalin certain models.

“Among the several million Toy-ota vehicles sold across Europe inthe past five years there has been asmall number of reported cases ofdrivers experiencing a problemwith a sticking accelerator pedal.

“There have been no reports ofany accidents or injuries occurringas a result of this problem in Eu-rope, or the UK.

“People who drive any of themodels that are to be recalledshould also be aware that this isnot a problem that develops sud-denly.

There are warning signs that willindicate that your vehicle mighthave a problem, such as the accel-erator pedal becoming harder todepress or slow to return to itsnormal position.”Here are some of the questionsbeing asked, and some answers:

What exactly is the problem? There is a possibility that certainaccelerator pedal mechanismsmay, in rare instances, mechani-cally stick in a partially depressedposition or return slowly to theidle position.

What is the cause? Some accelerator pedal mecha-nisms may become worn. As a re-sult, friction in the mechanism mayincrease and intermittently resultin the accelerator pedal being hardto depress, slow to return or, in theworst case, stick in a partially openposition.

Are there any warnings that thiscondition exists? In some cases, the driver may no-

tice that the accelerator pedal isharder to depress or is slow to re-turn. In some cases, the driver maynotice a rough or chattering feelingwhen depressing/ releasing the ac-celerator pedal.

What is Toyota doing to addressthe issue in the UK?On 1 February 2010 Toyota con-firmed a comprehensive fix for theaccelerator pedals of the Toyotamodels planned for recall in Eu-rope (seven in the UK, see below).Priority in the recall will be givento the older vehicles among thoseaffected. Priority will also be givento those vehicles that have beenthe subject of specific customercomplaints.

When will recall work begin? Toyota expects the recall work tostart immediately after the arrivalof the required parts in the UK onWednesday, 10 February.

How and when will Toyota becontacting affected customers?Toyota has confirmed exactlywhich UK models will be the sub-ject of its safety recall and is nowreceiving the registration detailsand the contact details of the own-ers or registered keepers of these

vehicles from the DVLA.Using this information, Toyota isimmediately contacting the own-ers/keepers to inform them thattheir vehicle is among those cov-ered by the recall and that it willneed to be taken to a Toyota serv-ice centre for attention.

What models are affected?Toyota has communicated detailsof the 180,865 affected UK vehiclesto the DVLA. The total is made upof certain models from seven Toy-ota ranges:•iQ •Aygo•Yaris•Auris•Corolla•Avensis•Verso •Prius Toyota can confirm that, in the UK,manual Aygo models and all ver-sions of RAV4 are not included inthe recall. No Lexus models and noother Toyota passenger cars orlight commercial vehicles are af-fected in the UK.

Toyota advises customers whohave concerns to contact Toyota

After Thelma and Louise, the third biggest star in the1991 road movie was a1966 Ford Thunderbird.

Which isn’t bad going, see-ing as brad Pitt was int hefilm.

In the end, it all ends on ahigh - then a low - as Thelmaand Louise, pursued by thepolice decide to “keep going”and drive off a 2,000 foot cliff.

Louise's classic T-Bird con-vertible symbolises the free-dom that she and Thelma sorecklessly pursue.

Their actions spiral out ofcontrol as the two of them

make their way across thecountry in the T-Bird, partic-ularly with the ever-more-daring Thelma, who has shedher giggly, goofy personalityfor a determined, aggressive,hard-drinking one.

When a policeman (JasonBeghe) stops them for speed-ing, Thelma threatens the po-liceman with her gun, stealshis gun, and locks him in thetrunk of his cruiser.

Thelma and Louise are fi-nally cornered by police atthe edge of a 2000-foot cliff.

Rather than be capturedand spend the rest of their

lives in jail, they decide todrive the car over the cliff andcommit suicide.

The film ends with a freezeframe of the car in mid-air.End credits begin over amontage of their happiestmoments together during theweekend.

The convertible, went upfor auction in Arizona in2008. It sold for $65,000.

At the same auctionWilliam Shatner's 1995Harley-Davidson sold for$30,000 and the 1966 GTOMonkeemobile, whichbrought $360,000.

Thelma and Louise

Porsche have developed thenew 911 Turbo S in responseto customer demand forgreater power, performanceand driving dynamics.

Building on the success andreputation of the revered 911Turbo, at the heart of this mostexclusive high-performance ath-lete is a six-cylinder ‘boxer’ en-

gine boosted by two turbocharg-ers with variable turbine geome-try.

An increase in horsepowerover the 911 Turbo of 30 hpboosts peak output to 530 hp(390 kW) and maximum torqueis a most impressive 700 New-ton-metres (516 lb-ft).

Despite its significant increase

in power and dynamic perform-ance, the new 911 Turbo S re-turns 24.8 mpg Combined (11.4l/ 100 km) and as such offersidentical fuel consumption to theregular Porsche 911 Turbo.

In conjunction with the LaunchControl function of the SportChrono Package Turbo that isalso fitted as standard, the 911

Turbo S accelerates from a 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds and reaches124 mph in 10.8 seconds. Topspeed is 196 mph .

Customers will also be able toexplore their 911 Turbo S anddevelop driving skills courtesy ofa Driving Experience Programmeat the Porsche Experience Centreat Silverstone.

Every so often, a car comes along that challengesconventional thinking.

A car that offers much more than you’d expect forthe money, redefines style, takes normal practice andturns it on its head.

The new Chevrolet Spark is one such vehicle. Well, that’s at least what Chevrolet reckon. Maybe

it’s an American thing - in the same way that the Su-perbowl is “the greatest show on Earth”.

It’s on sale in all major European markets, includingthe UK, from the first quarter of 2010

Last Sunday Horsham LionsU10s rugby squad joined Hay-wards Heath, Heathfield, Hast-ings and Hove to compete forthe annual and hotly contested“H” Cup.

This year’s tournament washosted by Heathfield & WaldronRFC and the event coincidedwith the opening of their newpitch “Cypress Field”.

Horsham started strongly witha 2-1 win against Heathfield.Within virtually the first play ofthe game Joe Blake made astorming run from the half wayline to score his first try of thetournament. Jonathon Stanwayfollowed this with a further tryensuring a triumphant beginningto the day.

In a very close and fiercelycontested second game whichcould have gone either way, Hor-sham were defeated 1-0 bymajor rivals, Haywards Heathwho eventually went on to be-come overall winners of the tour-nament.

Horsham bounced back intheir third game by securing a 2-0 victory against Hove. It was amassive team effort with keyplays by Dan Longo on the wingand Oscar Quigley breakingthrough the centre of play, gain-ing rightful reward for the con-

stant pressure he imposedthroughout the game.

The Lions final contest wasagainst Hastings which they wonconvincingly 6-0, with a hat-trickof tries by Joe Blake, whose playwas solid throughout the tourna-ment. Further tries were scoredby Dan Longo, Max Paterson and

Vince Everitt who, in particular, showed awesome power by de-livering some great drives.

Once again the Lions team-work was outstanding and it issignificant that just the one trysnatched overall victory fromthem.

Coach Rob Stanway looked

back on the tournament and said“All the squad played well. If wehad drawn against HaywardsHeath, in what was a close game,we would have won the tourna-ment.

“Everybody tried their besttoday.”

BBH victorykeeps them on top

Vital win comes at a price

Horsham put their recent de-feats against Boreham Woodand Kingstonian behind themto see off the challenge of in-form Ashford Town with a per-formance described by JohnMaggs as "one of the best ofthe season."

On a night of high drama, andtalking points aplenty, it wasHorsham's teenage trio that par-ticularly caught the eye withAdam Hutchings and TonyNwachukwu grabbing the goalsin a devastating opening spellthat left the visitors' 12 matchunbeaten run in tatters.

Not to be outdone, 18 year oldJosh Pelling marked his homedebut with a series of vital savesincluding a first half penaltyfrom Brian Haule to help movethe Hornets to within a point ofthe play-off positions.

The result was tainted, though,by a less than convincing displayfrom the match officials whocaused frequent bemusement

and frustration to both sidesthrough a number of puzzlingdecisions, culminating in thecontentious dismissal of AlexHaddow, who was shown a sec-ond yellow card for an allegedtrip on Warren Harris five min-utes from time.

Without a league goal in morethan 3.5 hours of football, no-onewould have anticipated thewhirlwind start from the homeside that produced 2 quickfiregoals in the first 11 minutes, with Hutchings and Nwachukwuat the heart of things.

The first, on 8 minutes, owedmuch to two of the club's moresenior players as Haddow's finecross was headed powerfullygoalwards by Andrews andNwachukwu was quickest toreact after Paul Burgess couldonly parry the ball away, theyoungster stabbing the ballhome at the foot of the post.

The biggest cheer, though, un-doubtedly came when Hutchingsclaimed his first senior goal forthe club in Horsham's next at-tack.

Acheampong's measured passplayed Nwachukwu in to spacebeyond the full-back and the tal-

ented winger raced to the goal-line before pulling the ball backfor Hutchings to thrash a firsttime shot high in to the net.

It was tremendous start forHorsham and totally vindicatedthe manager's decision to in-clude the youngsters in the start-ing XI.

Horsham’s third goal was, once again, as stunning in its ex-ecution as it was in its inception.

Inevitably, Nwachukwu wasinvolved when he and Sargentcombined to set Andrews freedown the right and when the bigtarget man crossed low and hardin to the penalty area, Hardingstepped over the ball to allowHaddow a free strike and hemade no mistake, rifling the ballin to the bottom corner of the netwith Burgess given no chance.

Ashford were given a dubiouspenalty but justice was done asPelling guessed correctly anddived to his right to smotherBrian Haule's weak effort tomaintain Horsham's 3-0 advan-tage at the break.

More controversy was to fol-low, 8 minutes after the restart, when Johnson attacked downthe wing and centred for the un-

marked England to shoot at goalfrom less than 5 yards out.Pelling spread himself full lengthto repel the Ashford man's effortand grab hold of the ball as itspooned above him, only for thelinesman to indicate that the ballhad crossed the line.

Quite how the official couldhave made such an importantdecision, positioned close to theAshford dug-out rather than inline with play, is anyone's guessand Pelling's anger was com-pounded with a yellow card forhis protests.

Horsham engineered anothergood break that was to result intheir 4th goal on 64 minutes.

Knee passed inside to Sargentand the midfielder played a de-lightful ball behind the full-backfor Haddow to cross for Hardingwho finished at the second timeof asking, after Burgess and thepost had kept out the striker'sfirst attempt.

Horsham though were to pickup several yellow cards as theyheld on to their 4-1 lead, andmove on to eighth in the table.

from flanker Simon Ashman. He was then injured badly

and needed an air ambu-lance before being taken tohospital.

Horsham were distractedbut managed to hang on fora crucial win in a bad-tem-

Horsham Sparrows Under 12girls team faced Littlehamptonon Sunday.

After beating their “Yellow”team 4 -1 a few weeks back, ex-pectations were high for Spar-rows.

The starting lineup was Fran,Georgia, Chloe, Lucy, Keyannea, Si-enna and Georgina. Subs wereHope, Charlotte and Ellie.

Sparrows won kick off but lostpossession virtually straight awayand in the early stages struggledto play as a team.

Sienna came off and Charlottewent on as Sparrows attempted tostrengthen the midfield.

The girls gave 100% commit-ment and had bags full of enthusi-asm but had forgotten the basics -control, pass, move, much to thefrustration of the coaches.

The defence held strong andSparrows did push hard for a goalbut Littlehampton kept it simple, passed the ball around and foundthe back of the net.

But Horsham picked them-selves up and things were startingto look promising but the shoot-ing was still a little off target.

A substitution was made andback on came Sienna. With thewords from the coach still ringingin her ear, she grabbed hold of the

ball, took a touch, put her footstraight through the ball and hit itnice and hard but more impor-tantly low and directly into thecorner.

It was a great finish and thingswere starting to look up.

Hope came on for Georgina topile on the pressure for their de-fence and Ellie gave Lucy a chanceto take a breather.

Half time came and went andSparrows continued to work hard.Sometimes, they played greatcounter attacking football butcouldn’t find the right pass upfront to finish the job off.

Coach Tony Monella said: “Wewere a team of individuals thisweek which doesn’t please me asI encourage everyone to play as ateam.

“Our first touch on the whole, was also a point of concern. Wehave Oakwood this weekend athome who have now taken 4thplace away from us.

“The week after is our semi finalso we really need to up our gameand attitude before then. Hope-fully, this week’s game has actedas a wake up call.

“I was pleased with the team’scommitment this week and nowwe need to add the concentrationand skill that I know we have.”

After a slow start Juve went be-hind after but soon equalisedwhen a long throw from KarlMitchell-Harris found RyanArcher to knee in at the back post.Juve took the lead when anotherlong throw found Josh Archer whofound some space in the area tosidefoot home.

Horsham Juventus never lookedback and scored again when Manof the Match Mitchell Harris’ flickon found Damon Aston to roundthe keeper and put juve 3-1 up.Juve 4th was clearly goal of the

game when Aston, from 30 yards, hit a screamer which left Flamin-gos’ keeper no chance.

In the second half Juve startedoff strongly and Grant Miller teedup Shaun Findlay to poke homeand minutes later Aston’s shotfound the unmarked CharlieHodgson to make it 6-1.

Pink Flamingos did pull a cou-ple of goals back but when JoshArcher won and scored a penaltythe game was over. Archer thengot his hat-trick and Findlayadded another. Monkey Adams, making his comeback from injury, set up Aston for his hat-trick, scor-ing from a tight angle.

Horsham put up a spiriteddisplay against high-flyingKingstonian but were un-able to find a way pasttheir former goalkeeperRob Tolfrey.

His two stunning saveshelped the visitors recordtheir third league win in arow to close the gap on fal-tering leaders Dartford.

In front of Gorings Mead'ssecond highest gate of theseason, swelled by a fair-sized travelling contingent, the Hornets were secondbest during a fairly turgidfirst half in which arguablythe most telling piece of ac-tion produced the game's de-cisive moment when CarlWilson-Denis headed homehis 11th goal of the season on31 minutes.

It took the introduction ofTony Nwachukwu to liven upthe hosts after the break butTolfrey put in a near faultlessdisplay to frustrate his for-mer team-mates as they laidsiege to his goal for much ofthe second half and, when hewas finally beaten, the wood-work came to his aid to denySam Tucknott a sensationalequaliser.

These two sides played outa superbly entertainingmatch on the Kingsmeadowcarpet back in September butthe chances of a repeatlooked unlikely as the sidesmade their way on to a glue-pot of a pitch, littered withpotholes, divots and scatter-ings of sand.

The Hornets had a sniff of

an opening, just before thehalf hour, when Tolfrey's un-derhit clearance fell for Tuc-knott who showed greatawareness to pick out JackPage with a sweeping passbut Jolley was back in thenick of time to clear the ballaway from danger as the'keeper rushed quickly backto his goal.

The near-miss joltedKingstonian in to a responseand a terrific crossfield passfrom Matt Gray sought outHickie who forced a fine savefrom Bradshaw at his nearpost. From the corner, lead-ing scorer Bobby Traynorturned provider by chippingthe ball towards the far postwhere Wilson-Denis headedhome from close range.

The visitors would haveextended their lead threeminutes later, had it not beenfor the reactions of Brad-shaw.

Moments later, Hardingwas unable to find the space

to shoot inside a packed areaand a rare chance waswasted although Jack Page'sfollow-up shot produced aloud appeal for a penaltyafter the ball appeared tostrike a hand.

The appearance ofNwachukwu after the breakwas acknowledged by appre-ciative applause from theHorsham faithful and theyoungster wasted little timein making his mark, embark-ing on an exciting run downthe right-hand touchline be-fore being upended uncere-moniously by Hickie whoreceived a caution for hissins.

Kingstonian were strug-gling against the pace of Hor-sham's nippy wingers andMaggs added another dimen-sion to his side when he re-placed the excellent Paynewith Haddow and the newarrival would have been cel-ebrating a Horshamequaliser within seconds,

had Seanla's header notcleared the crossbar fromSargent's inviting free-kick.

Nwachukwu continued totorment the visitors downthe right-hand touchline, andthe home fans were certainlyenjoying what they werewatching, as their side pro-vided the commitment andworkrate to matchNwachukwu's skill.

Tolfrey then pulled off thefirst of his double saves whena great cross fromNwachukwu saw Sargent'smishit shot turned goalwardsby Harding but Horsham'sformer number one stopperproduced an incredible blockfrom point-blank range.

Maggs pushed the limpingAndrews in to the attack forthe final quarter of an houras the frantic siege continuedon Tolfrey's goal whereHarding and Haddow saw ef-forts kept out by brave blocksby the Ks defence.

But it was evident that thiswas destined not to be Hor-sham's afternoon when ascintillating moment of playended in further heartache.

Hutchings' persistencesaw him win possession ofthe ball in midfield and findSargent with a pass. Asweeping pass from the for-mer Leatherhead midfielderwas inch-perfect for Tuc-knott who raced to the edgeof the box before unleashinga spectacular strike thatcrashed off the crossbar.

Then late on,Nwachukwu's delicate flicklooked like earning a thor-oughly deserved point untilTolfrey arched himself back-wards to turn the ball overthe crossbar with his out-stretched fingertips.

Rasmus Madum produced alast-gasp winner as RoyalUnited beat championship ri-vals Southwater on Saturdaymorning.

In a thrilling encounter atPhillips Field, Under 11 DivisionD leaders Royal United extendedtheir advantage over secondplace Southwater.

A tense game of relatively fewchances suddenly came alive inthe final moments, with the gritand determination of Southwater(in red) up against the attackingflair of Royal United.

United hit the woodwork threetimes in ten frantic final minutesas Southwater rode their luck, but persevered to claim all threepoints with Madum’s close rangefinish.

For the most part, the first halfwas a battle of the midfield withfew moments of class football. The Royals had the better of thechances though. Robbie Bright-man forced Eddie Law into ac-tion with a fierce drive towardsgoal after great work from SamWheeler on the left.

And the same two attackerscombined well once again, withBrightman missing from closerange after a blistering Wheelercharge down the left flank.

But for the most part Southwa-ter’s central defensive pairing ofDan Casey and Ben Kidner dealtwith the Royals’ attack, andSouthwater could have gone intohalf-time a goal to the good.

A long ball set Tom Cockram

free for a one-on-one chance, buthe dragged his shot wide of theleft post, and it was goalless atthe break.

The second half though was farmore entertaining.

Royals took a deserved lead, and it was the ever-threateningSam Wheeler who scored thegoal. It looked as though he hadblown his chance as Southwa-ter’s back line was quick to closehim down, but a lovely turn onthe edge of the box tricked de-fender Dan Casey, who had stuckadmirably to hisman for most ofthe game. It al-lowed the yardhe needed forthe shot. EddieLaw in the South-water goal couldn’tquite get across to keep out theshot.

But he made up for that mo-ments later. Boosted by the goal,Royals poured forward, and asweet shot by Matthew Blogglooked destined for the backof the net. But Laws pulledoff a spectacular mid airsave with his legs to keephis team in the game.

And within a couple ofminutes, Southwaterequalised, a littleagainst the run ofplay. Ben

Clark scored a goal from nothing, chasing down a hopeful balldown the left flank, sticking out aboot and finding the net with agreat strike from the edge of thebox.

S u d -denly,t h em o -m e n -

tum of the game had turned.Cameron Houston, who had beenlimited to just a few attackingruns, came close to putting thereds ahead, and suddenly Royal

United’s small but feisty de-fender Gareth King neededto raise his troops.

Southwater’s number 11then had a great chance

after being putthrough one-

But Royals weath-ered the storm, and achange of tactics saw

them throw an extraman up front for the

final ten minutes. It wasa move that was to pay

dividends.Daniel Huddlestone

looked to have won it, butunder pressure from two de-fenders, he could only pokehis shot against the left post.Moments later, a mazy runsaw Wheeler waltz into thebox, but a superb last ditchchallenge by Cockram de-nied him.

Horshamshoot down

Rangers

We may be well in to Febru-ary, but Horsham YouthUnder 14’s played only theirthird home game of the sea-son on Saturday.

Despite the lack of football,Horsham kept up their chal-lenge at the top of the Arun &Chichester League with athumping win against thirdplace lancing Rangers.

The result sees Horsham gofourth, just two points offleaders Sompting and withgames in hand on all theteams above them.

Horsham started the gamebrightly and took the leadwith a great strike from 20yards by Connor Cushing inthe 6th minute. Horshamplayed some nice footballwhich resulted in Stanley Ricegetting Horsham's secondgoal after 17 minutes.

Lancing conceded a penaltyin the 24th minute which wasnicely put away by JacobWaller.

Lancing got out of the start-ing blocks first in the secondhalf with a goal within the first45seconds, but Horsham soonregained control of the gamewith Stanley getting his sec-ond goal.

In the last 10 minutes ZakComber got a hat- trick withthe first in the 60th minute. His second was 2 minuteslater and then Zak completedthe rout with a penalty inadded time.

Roffey Robins Ath U14s 3Maidenbower Colts 1An entertaining first halffailed to produce any goals, asboth defences held firm.Maidenbower came out thestronger in the second half, and took an early lead after 5minutes.

Roffey had a penalty appealturned down straight after, but this just inspired Roffey,

and attack after attack eventu-ally lead to a goal mouthscramble that saw a MattSigrist shot come off the post, the rebound was hit by Con-nor Pollard, but the goalbound shot was somehowsaved by the defender on theline, again the ball reboundedout, this time to Max Lewis, who finally drove the ballhome from 6 yards.

Roffey were far the betterside in the second half, andafter good work from GeorgeHole on the left, his cross waswell finished by Matt Sigrist.

Roffey nearly got caught onthe break, but a combinationof Roffey keeper Jason Dur-rant and man of the matchOmar S-King, kept the ball out.

Connor Pollard made thegame safe, slotting from 5yards with 10 minutes to go.

Royal United U14's 8 Albury Eagles 2Having not played since 7thNovember, Royal United(above) were eager to getback to playing football and

thats just what they didagainst Albury.

Zac Love beat the keeper forUnited’s first. With Alburybeing rushed into playing theball early and giving the ballaway, Jake Legrange added asecond.

The Royals could have gonefurther ahead with opportuni-ties being created in midfieldfrom Tom Frankland & Stan-ley Rice, but it was man of thematch Connor Cushing whoscored a first half hat-trick in-cluding a 20 yard thunder boltof a free kick.

Albury hit back with a goalwithin the first 5 mins of thesecond half. However, JakeLegrange added his secondbefore Royals captain JacobWaller added another.

Credit to Albury who nevergave up and added a second, but Royals got their final goalwhen Zac Love was up-endedin the box and Jacob Wallercooly converted the resultingpenalty to finish 8-2.

Their were excellent per-formances from Lewis Clark,Aaron Chaplin, Harry Garman& Reiss Blackwood.

Southwater’s rescue once again, denying United’s RasmusMadum, before Blogg hit the leftpost as Southwater desperatelydefended in the final minutes.

Southwater had a chance tosteal it, but nobody could applythe finishing touch to a danger-ous cross that drifted right infront of the goal.

But just as it looked as thoughSouthwater might earn a pointfor their endeavour, Madumbroke their hearts with a latewinner.

The ball found its way to theedge of the box and Huddlestoneslammed the ball against thecrossbar. But luckily for the Roy-als it bounced down right at thefeet of the grateful number 7,who made no mistake fromclose range.

It was no less than RoyalUnited deserved, with severalexcellent individual perform-ances from the likes of SamWheeler, Adam Brown andGareth King, combined withsome good passing football.

But it was a cruel way forSouthwater to lose, having pro-duced such a determined per-formance.
