Pettisville Takes A Share Of The BBC GoldWith A Last-Second Win Over Hilltop

    By: Timothy Kays

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    WEST UNITY: February 6, 2014 - The

Hilltop Lady Cadets were looking for awin to bring them into a tie at the top of

the BBC heap with Pettisville. The visitingLady Blackbirds were looking for a win to

clench a share of the BBC Title, and knockthe Lady Cadets out of the running.

In the early going, it looked like the La-

dybirds were going to skate away with aneasy win, but after being down by eight,

the hometown girls got their motors run-ning and made it a game. It was Pettisville

that had the nal word though, as aftercoming back to tie the game, they won it

on a Lauren Hostetler three with 0.3 sec-

onds remaining to grab a share of the BBCCrown to give the Lady Cadets a 60-57

heartbreaker.Hilltop was able to right the ship and

head into the second period down by onlyfour. When Pettisville point guard Mikala

Avina went to the bench with foul trouble,

the Lady Cadets went to town, posting a

20-6 second period run to take a ten-pointlead into the half.

With Avina back for the second half,

the Ladybirds went back to work, chip-ping away at the decit. They cut the Hill-

top lead to eight going into the fourth,

and then did what they are famous for...create turnovers and quickly convert them

to points. The Hilltop lead vanished, andon the nal possession of the game, the

Ladybirds went for the dagger. With the

score tied at 57-57, Avina brought the ball

downcourt. As Hilltop prepared for the lastshot, they collapsed on Avina, who quickly

got the ball off to Hostetler. The Hilltop de-fense sprang to the threat, but Hostetler

had enough of a look to rattle home the

game winning trifecta."It was a nice win for us," said Jason

Waldvogel, the Pettisville Head Coach. "Wedidnt defend very well in the rst half and

put them at the foul line; Hilltop convertedthere all night long. We defended much

better in the second half and stayed out of

foul trouble. We were able to pressure themin the fourth quarter with Dana Fricke and

Lauren Hostetler stepping up offensivelyduring that time. Lauren hit the big shot

for us then at the end of the game."

Fricke put away 24 points to lead allscorers, while Hostetler nished with 15

ans amassed a score of 2569, and came

away with sixth in the conference for thecampaign. Winland rolled a high game of

Wauseon Indians Roll To TheChampionship Of The NWOAL

NAPOLEON: February 7, 2014 TheWauseon Indians were already sitting in

striking range when the NWOAL Cham-pionship Tournament took place on Feb-

ruary 7...it was Bryan's championship to

lose. It would take a rst place nish byeither Bryan or a rst place nish by the

hard-charging Liberty Center PLUS anepic collapse by the Bears and the Tribe

for Wauseon to be denied. The Tigers didtheir part, but the Indians did not comply

by wilting under pressure. The epic col-

lapse role was relegated to the Bryan Gold-en Bears.

As a result, it was Liberty Center win-ning the event with 3753 pins, but the

strong second place by the Tribe ensuredthem the 2013-14 NWOAL Championship

gold. The 3222-pin collapse of the Golden

Bears put them fth in the tourney, knock-ing them out of rst place in the confer-

ence, and opening the door for Wauseon.Behind the high game of 212 from Pey-

ton Shadbolt, the high series of 557 fromNoah Stickley, and the all-familiar Baker

game power that has been the hallmark ofthe Wauseon Bowling program all seasonlong, the Tribe nished a strong second in

the tournament with 2519 pins.Regular season wins are worth two

points toward the conference crown stand-ings, and a win in the tournament is good

for another 14. For each place under rst

place in the tournament, two points aresubtracted. Bryan came into the nal

with one more regular season win thanthe Tribe for a 22-20 lead. The 14 points

for rst place in the tourney went to theTigers, who nished third in the NWOAL

with 26 points. The fth place nish added

just six points to the Bryan total. Wauseonhowever, leapfrogged the second place

Bears with 12 points, giving them 32 con-ference points and the undisputed NWOAL

    Championship.The following individual Wauseon re-
