    Indians Burst Past Delta 70-46

    By: Bill Bray

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    WAUSEON: January 18, 2014 - The

Wauseon Indians were outscored 20-5 inthe rst quarter but outscored the Delta

Panthers 65-26 the rest of the way for a70-46 non-league win.

Delta's Justin Callahan got Delta outof the gate quickly with four three-point

shots in the rst quarter as the Panthers

were up 14-4. The Indians only scored onemore point in the rst eight minutes on a

foul shot from Noah Castle.Slowly but steadily the Indians began

to close the gap during the second quar-ter. The Tribe scored the rst six points ofthe quarter as they closed to within 20-

    11. Delta scored it's only two points of thequarter with a basket from Bailey Mon-

roe at the 4:33 mark of the quarter. Fromthere the Indians took charge coming back

from the 20-5 decit to tie the game up at

22-22 as the half ended.Castle, Jacob Newlove and Kris Boy-

sel led the charge in the second half withaggressive, physical play. Castle was bat-

tling near the basket and accepting nicely

conceived passes from Newlove as the 6'5"

junior put up a season high 28 points. Healso crashed the board for 18 rebounds

    giving him an impressive double-double.

During the rst quarter the Panthersput up seven shots from the oor. Over the

next three quarters they tallied the sametotal as the Indians defense formed a solid

    wall.It was Wauseon's 10th victory in 13

tries this season. The league game with

Delta happens in a few weeks. First onthe thoughts of the minds of the talented

bunch of Indians is their rivals the Arch-bold Blue Streaks. The game happens Fri-

day evening at Archbold high school.Beside Castle, Boysel and Newlove each

nished with 13 points apiece in the great

team effort and victory."I know that the Panthers will be out

for revenge in a few weeks when it countsin the league standings," coach Chad Burt

said. "They are a very solid team and wewill have to again be at our best to get past

WAUSEON: JANUARY 24, 2014 - Withall NWOAL games cancelled because of

the weather, all league eyes were on theWauseon Indians vs the Archbold Blue

    Streaks.

Wauseon was plagued with 11 rst-halfturnovers as they trailed after one quar-

ter 10-4. 6'8" Luke Fisher was dominateearly with a three pointer and had multiple

blocks in close. The second quarter, Wauseon's defense

quieted Fisher as the Indians outscoredthe Streaks 9-7. Kris Boysel played an

important role during the quarter as the

senior scored four points and had a strongdefensive showing. The Streaks opened

up their biggest lead of the quarter 17-11as Evan Wyse found Brandon Goering for

two. The Indians got the nal two points ofthe half with a nice steal f rom Corry Byers

to close the gap 17-13 as the half ended.

Goerig sparked the Streaks in the thirdquarter. Goerig came out and connected

on a put-back then canned a three pointerto put Archbold up 22-13.

The Indians came back with two drivesfrom Zac Robinson and Jacob Newlove

as the Tribe would not die and closed the

advantage back to ve points at 22-17.Luke Fisher scored with a put back and

Kris Boysel found Newlove to make it a24-19 score. Noah Castle, who committed

his fourth foul with 4:25 remaining in thethird quarter had to sit and was replaced

by Zach Robinson. Johnson responded by

grabbing an offensive rebound off a Boyselmiss and was fouled. He sank both foul

shots and the Indians were back to withinthree at 24-21. But as was the case most of

the night, a good Wauseon possession wasanswered by the Blue Streaks with one of

their own. Wyse stole the ball and took it

in for a layup as the Streaks respondedquickly to go back up 26-21. Corry Byers

again closed the gap to three after a harddrive to the basket producing a foul send-

ing him to the line. He connected on both

shots as the seesaw battle continued. Ty-son Schnitkey took a quick lesson from

Byers and had the same result after hedrove to the basket. He made both of his

foul shots as the Streaks clung to theirve-point advantage 28-23. That is how

    the third quarter ended.

Castle reentered the game for Wauseonto start the fourth and nal stanza and

his presence obviously lifted the Indians

moral. He clawed his way to the board for

two put-back opportunities that failed but

was fouled in the process. He made the

two free throws and the Tribe was back to

within four at 28-24. Kris Boysel rose to

the occasion after that. Boysel drew a pair

of charge fouls. This time his quick think-

ing and excellent defense gave Fisher his

fourth foul. Then to add insult to injury,

Boysel electried the Indians faithful with

a heartfelt dunk to close Archbold's lead

to 28-26 with seven minutes remaining.

A make by Goerig, and Schnitkey fouling

Castle who connected at the line made the

score 30-28 at the 6:21 mark. A Schnitkey

miss and a Castle rebound gave the Indi-

ans the ball. Castle's great pass to Robin-

son gave the game it's rst tie at 30-30.

The two teams continued to battle like a

championship heavy weight match as they

traded baskets. Grossjean for Archbold on

a 12' foot jumper followed by Boysel's low

off the glass shot tied the game again at

32-32. Castle stood his ground for a big

defensive play that gave Wyse a charging

foul. Fisher then fouled out at the 4:19

mark sending Castle back to the line again.

He calmly sank both shots to put the Indi-ans up for the rst time in the game at 34-

    32. Seconds later the game was tied again

at 34-34 on a Grossjean make as he was

fouled by Robinson. A handful of fouls

followed sending both teams to the line

on several occasions over the next three

minutes. After another one point differ-

ence at 39-38, the Blue Streaks chose the

right time to go on a run. Evan Wyse was

a man possessed over the last two minutes

of the game as the senior made the game

his own. He started the Streaks' run as he

stood at the line for this third free throw

attempt of the quarter. The senior con-

nected on both shots putting the Streaks

up 41-38. Wyse again produced as he was

fouled by Boysel with 47.4 second left. He

was perfect again and the Streaks' lead

grew to 43-28. Wyse again boarded a Byersmiss and Grossjean was fouled by Alec Lil-

lich. Grossjean made one of two shots for

a 44-38 lead. Byers was off the mark on a

shot from beyond the arc followed immedi-

ately by an Archbold timeout. The Streaks

nished their 8-0 run with a foul shot and

layup by Goerig as the Streaks went on to

    a key NWOAL victory.
