Edon Bombers NarrowlyFall At Home To Hamilton

(January 27th, 2015) – EDON: TheBombers came within a layup of tying thegame against Hamilton.

Unfortunately for the Edon boys, thatlayup was disrupted by heavy traf c, withseveral Marines guarding the rim. Se-nior Alex Kirkingburg elevated above thecrowd, trying to take advantage of the briefwindow to take a shot. It didn't happen tofall, however, and the boys from Hamiltonwere able to grab the rebound.

Edon began to foul in order to extendthe game, allowing the Marines to in atetheir lead to 6 in the 51-45 Bomber loss.

The contest was a close one from thestart. To begin the rst quarter, Edontraded baskets with Hamilton, beforesome stellar three point shooting by theMarines put some separation betweenthe two teams. By the end of the openingstanza, the Bombers found themselves be-hind 16-9. Refusing to fade away so early,Edon battled back in the second period, relying heavily on Ladon Bloir, a junior forthe Bombers. Energized by a timely three-point make by sophomore Brayden Bauer, the Bombers put up 12 points against theHamilton defense. The hometown defensestepped up as well, giving up just 5 pointsto the Marine offensive assault.

At the half, the two teams were tied at21 points each.

Heading into the third quarter, bothunits were determined to take over the

game offensively. Another three by Bauer, along with the consistent inside scoring ofBloir, helped balloon Edon's collective totalby 13 points. But the deadly accurate Ma-rine shooters sniped several more three-point shots on their way to a 16 point pe-riod.

With just a single quarter left in thecontest, Edon was down 37-34.

The fourth quarter was an all out war.Hamilton held the upper hand throughoutthe period, but the Bomber boys wouldsimply not go away. Bauer hit yet anothertriple to help Edon's cause, his third on theevening. Junior Jim Peckham also con-nected on a massive three-point attemptfrom the deep corner, keeping the Bomb-ers within one possession late in the game.Shortly after Kirkingberg missed the dif -cult layup that would have tied the contestin the nal minute, the senior fouled outof the game in an effort to stop the clock.

Bloir led the Bombers in the heart-breaking loss, scoring 15 points on 6 two-point eld goals. Bauer shot his way to 9points, making a three-point shot in thesecond, third, and fourth quarters. Kirk-ingberg put up 8 points against the Ma-rine defense, also having a strong showingon defense. Fellow senior Floyd Young hita three-pointer early in the contest, help-ing to bring his total to 7 points. Peckhamknocked down a pair of threes on his wayto 6 points.

Wauseon Indians Tame The Panthers In Overtime At Delta

(January 30th, 2015) – DELTA: Ten-sions were high on Friday night as the

Wauseon Indians traveled east on 20A toplay the Delta Panthers. Both teams en-gaged in a tug-of-war, ensuring for an ex-travagant performance that would requiremore than four quarters to transpire.

In what could only be described as avolley between the teams’ offenses, bothWauseon and Delta took off without look-ing back; the Panthers shooting widewhile the Indians driving in towards thebasket. The back-and-forth action wasmost prevalent during the last ve min-utes of the rst half – leaving the crowdanxious and on its feet by halftime withDelta up by one point, 20-19.

Act II of the night would reveal the truestrengths and weaknesses in both teams. As Wauseon began to commandeer alead in the third quarter, leading 60-52,the Panthers would rally to leap over the

Indians with 1:30 left to go in the game.Senior Zach Johnson would tie the game

at 68, resulting in a showdown in over-time. The Indian boys would exert smart,

powerful offense and score 9 more pointsto cage the Panthers and take the victory77-73.

Both teams would demonstrate top-quality offense and defense throughoutthe match; however, Wauseon would sur-pass the Panthers in combined rebounds, steals, blocks, and turnovers. The Indiansshot 57% from inside the 3-point line,25% from the outside, and a steady 56%from the free-throw line.

Senior Noah Castle led the Indians inscoring with 22 points, with teammates

Jacob Newlove and Zach Johnson closebehind contributing 21 and 18 points, respectively. Castle had a remarkableperformance resulting in a triple-double,consisting of 22 points, 10 rebounds, and10 blocked shots.

The Indian boys improved their overall

record to 11-2 and 3-1 in the NWOAL, ty-ing Archbold for second in the league.

Stryker Wins Wild GameOver Fayette In Overtime

(January 30th, 2015) – STRYKER: In agame wholly capable of shaking the foun-dations of the Buckeye Border Conference(BBC), Fayette traveled to Stryker to goagainst the Panthers.

What resulted from the match-up gavecause to a few tremors that ripped throughthe league. In a contest that went into dou-ble overtime, Stryker was able to upset theEagle boys for a 53-49 victory.

This contest was a tight one right upuntil its closing moments, beginning in therst quarter. The two BBC powers tradedbaskets throughout the period, with Fay-ette claiming the rst real advantage of thegame. They led 11-10 by the conclusion ofthe opening quarter. In the second frame,Stryker would gain the upper hand, if onlyslightly. The Panthers clung to a 19-17lead at the half.

Coming out of the locker rooms, bothsquads refused to back down. It showedon the scoreboard, as the Panthers andEagles fought their way to a 34-34 scoreheading into the fourth and nal period.Except that it wasn't the nal period, duemainly to stellar defensive performanceson each end of the oor. Neither Strykernor Fayette could get their offense going in

the fourth stanza, with each team settlingfor 5 points. And overtime.

The rst extra period saw a continua-tion of the defensive showdown from thefourth quarter. Again, each time was onlyallowed 5 points. This necessitated an-other overtime. That's when the Pantherspounced. Outscoring the boys of Fayette9-5 in the second overtime, Stryker stole awin out from under Fayette.

The contest was a clean one. BothStryker and Fayette managed to turn the

ball over just 8 times. Given the aggressivenature of the defenses involved, as well asthe length of the game, this st atistic is sim-ply astounding.

Free throw shooting really hurt the Ea-gles. Not only did they shoot below 50%from the line, but they only t ook 9 attemptsin the entire game. Stryker connectedon 10 of their 14 shots from the charitystripe, good for a 71% success rate. Thatalso gave the Panthers more makes fromthe line than Fayette attempted, a stat theusually translates to a victory.

Parker Ruffer, a Stryker senior, led allscorers with 18 points. His teammate,

Tanner Clingaman, put up 11 points onthe evening. Fellow Panther Israel Aguilarknocked down a pair of threes on his wayto 8 points.

Koby Biddix hit 5 triples, as the Fay-ette senior managed 17 points against thestout Stryker defense. Another Eagle AlecBost made 3 three-point shots as he to-taled 11 points. Tristan Bates and JaredSeiler each scored 8 points in the loss.

Stryker's victory brings a bit of clarityto a very muddled hierarchy in the BBC,at least for the moment. The Panthers arermly in the drivers seat for a conference

title, with a 9-6 record with a 5-1 mark inleague play. Pettisville also has just a sin-gle conference loss, standing at 7-8 over-all, and a 5-1 record in the BBC. Fayettenow needs help to get back into the race, sporting a 9-4 record on the season, but a3-2 standing in the conference. With theEagles two losses delivered at the handsof Pettisville and Stryker, even anotherconference loss for both the Panthers andBlackbirds may not be enough for Fayetteto claim BBC supremacy.

PHOTO BY TIMOTHY KAYS, STAFF TOO MUCH SPACE ... Alec Bost (2), a junior for the Eagles, has already released hislong-ranged shot by the time Stryker’s Brody Shock (22) is close enough to try and dis-rupt the attempt.

PHOTOS BY T.J. HUG, STAFF SEPARATE THE PARTIES ... Edon’s Alex Kirkingburg (12) leaps toward the basket, spit-ting between a pair of Marine defenders as he makes what should be a dif cult layuplook rather easy.

SCORING MACHINE ... Bomber junior Landon Bloir (20), the most consistent scoreramongst the Edon boys this season, somhow nds a clear path to the rim as he tacks2 more points to his total.

(January 30th, 2015) – MONTPELIER:A disastrous rst quarter sealed the Lo-cos' fate early in their home North WesternOhio Athletic League bout with Evergreen.

Montpelier was outscored 16-3 in theopening period of the game. And while theywere able to follow up that lackluster per-formance with a decent showing in each ofthe next three quarters, the Locomotiveswere never able to make up any ground onthe Vikings. The hometown boys lost thecontest 62-48.

The second quarter saw Montpelier ndits offense, scoring 11 points in that span.Still, their defense continued to have is-sues as Evergreen put up 14 more pointsof their own before the half. Then, in the

third period, a 9 point outing for the Locoboys was overtaken as the Viking boysscored 15. Finally, in the last stanza of theevening, the Locomotives' offense steam-rolled over the Evergreen defense, lightingup the scoreboard for 25 points. This madelittle difference in the nal outcome, how-ever, as Evergreen added 17 more pointsin the quarter as well.

Kyrin Schuman and Jacob Leung ledMontpelier with 12 points apiece. Schumanearned all of his points at the three-pointline, knocking down a quartet of triples.Leung did most of his work from inside thearc, though he did connect on a three aswell. Senior Nate McCord worked the in-side as he earned 9 points the hard way.

Pettisville Blasts Edon In Road Win(January 30th, 2015) – EDON: The boys

of Pettisville hit the road, making the longtrek to Edon to take on the Bombers.

And they made sure the journey was afruitful one, defeating the Edon boys 68-27.

The Bombers had a dif cult time keep-ing pace from the start. By the end of therst quarter, Edon was down 19-6. Pettis-ville continued to control both ends of thecourt in the second quarter, building a 30-12 advantage heading into the locker room.

The third period went similarly as well, with

the Blackbirds outscoring the Bombers 21-4. Edon increased its offensive output inthe fourth quarter, but the Pettisville boyscontinued to score as well, as the Bomberboys found themselves losing the period 17-11.

Leading Pettisville in scoring was senior Josh Liechty, who made all 6 of his shot at-tempts in the game to total 13 points. GabeBeck and Eli King each offered 12 pointsto the Blackbird cause. Dustin Lucas, a

junior, contributed 8 points in the win aswell.

The Bombers were led by Jim Peck-ham, whose 8 for 8 performance from thefree throw line helped propel him to 10points. Alex Kirkingburg, the lone senior onthe Edon squad, totaled 7 points against

a vicious Pettisville defense. SophomoreBrayden Bauer connected on a triple onhis way to 6 points. Landon Bloir, normallythe primary source of scoring for the Edonboys, was held to just 4 points in the con-test.

Montpelier Loses Low Scoring Affair With Fayette In Second Half

(January 31st, 2015) – MONTPELIER:Defense ruled the day as Fayette, repre-senting the Buckeye Border Conference, made the trip to North Western Ohio Ath-letic League opponent Montpelier's homecourt on Saturday. Neither side could ndtheir offense, however, as the contest wasa low scoring one.

In the end, Fayette came out on top, beating Montpelier 38-28.

Koby Biddix led the way for the Eagles, hitting the team's only 2 three-pointers inthe game. He had 16 points on the eve-ning. Jared Seiler took control in the paint, giving his unit 10 points. Tristan Bates, at6'7” tall, also had a decent day on the in-side, totaling 6 points.

Montpelier had a trio of top scorers, asMichael Blake, Kolden Uribes, and Alex

Matzinger all recorded 6 points againstthe Eagle defense. Jacob Leung added 5points, while Nate McCord put up 3 in theloss.

The game itself was rather tight in therst half. Fayette barely pullled ahead atthe conclusion of the rst quarter 14-13.

The Locos evened out the points totals inthe second period with a 7-6 score. Thisput the two squads in a 20-20 tie at the

half.In the third quarter, the defensive in-tensity only increased. The Eagles got thebetter end of the scoring drought, howev-er, as they claimed period number three6-2. The nal period saw Fayette expandon their offensive success, outscoring theirLocomotive hosts 12-6, thus giving themthe 10 point road victory.

Hilltop Wears DownN. Central In Home Victory

(January 30th, 2015) – PIONEER: Fac-ing off against a rival is an invigoratingthing. The excitement coursing throughone's veins at the feeling that, no matterthe records involved, this game is special

can be downright intoxicating. It's evenbeen known to carry signi cant under-dogs to amazing victories.

The best way to counter t hat feeling isthrough depth, wearing down the oppo-nent until their tiredness has overtakingtheir adrenaline. Such was the strategy ofHilltop, who stepped onto North Central'shome court and came away with a 71-59win.

The boys of Pioneer led coming out ofthe rst quarter, 19-18. Hilltop overtookthat lead in the second period, though, asthey outscored North Central 16-12. Go-ing into the locker room, North Centralfound themselves in a 34-31 de cit.

Returning to the court, Hilltop con-tinued to wear down the thin roster of

the Eagles. The Cadets claimed the thirdquarter 17-13. Going into the fourth peri-od, the boys from West Unity held a 51-44advantage. During that nal quarter, Hill-top widened the gap between North Cen-

tral and themselves, winning the stanza20-15. Jalen Tower s, a senior Cadet, was to p

scorer on the evening with 22 points. Hisclassmate, Erike Stipe, was close behindwith 19 points. Sophomore Tim Manevaladded 11 points in the victory as well.

North Central had three double-digitscorers as well, all of which were seniors.

Jordan Reeves led the pack with 20 points. Jordan Bailey was good for 16 points, and Josh Sawyer connected on a t rio of three -point shots on his way to 14 points.

Depth was the key issue here. Hilltoprotated players in and out of the gameregularly, which is something North Cen-tral simply doesn't have the numbers todo, at least to the extent of the Cadets.

TOO LATE ... Quinn Smith (12), a Cadet sophomore, has already release his shot by thetime North Cetral senior Jordan Reeves (10) is able to get a hand in the Hilltop shooter’sface.

Edon Bomber JV Tops Hamilton(January 27th, 2015) – EDON: In an

impromptu bout, the junior varsity boysof Edon took on their counterparts fromHamilton on Tuesday, January 27. Nor-mally playing both boys and girls varsitygames on the same night, as is customaryin Indiana, the Marines brought their own

junior varsity boys squad as well. So fanswho walked into the Edon High School gymexpecting to see two games were treated to

a third as well. Not only that, but they witnessed an

Edon victory as well, 32-21. The Bomber boys pulled away in the

second half to earn the win. This was duemainly to the efforts of Travis Siebenaler.

The Edon freshman totaled 17 points, over half of his team's nal score. Anotherfreshman, Cameron Reed, put up 8 pointsfor the Bombers as well.

Fayette JV Wins With DefenseOn The Road Against Stryker (January 30th, 2015) – STRYKER: Mak-

ing the trip to Stryker, the Fayette JuniorVarsity boys stepped onto the Panthers'home court ready to play.

And it showed, as the Eagles came awaywith a 41-21 victory.

Fayette pulled away in the rst quar-ter, and never relinquished command ofthe contest. They built a 13-8 lead over theboys from Stryker. Expanding upon thatadvantage in the second quarter, the Eagleboys added another 12 points to their to-tal. Styrker continued to struggle, scoringonly 6 more points before the half. Thatput the score at 25-14, in favor of Fayette,as the teams jogged into the locker rooms.

The Panthers just couldn't nd a wayto make up ground on their guests fromFulton County. They were outscored in thethird quarter, though by the narrow mar-gin of 9-7. In the fourth quarter, the Pan-thers were unable to make a single basket.

Meanwhile, Fayette tacked on another 7

points, earning them a 20 point win. Turnovers played a critical role in the

game. Fayette was able to limit their pos-session-costing mistakes to 6. Strykerturned the ball over 11 times, which isnormally a respectable number. Yet, whenone's opponent has so few turnovers them-selves, 11 turnovers becomes a highernumber.

Also factoring into the contest's naldecision was free throws. The Eagles made9 of their 15 extra points. Stryker, on theother hand, went just 1 for 4 f rom the line.So few attempts typically demonstrates alack of aggression offensively.

In the win, Grant Reinking, a freshmanfor the Eagles, led his team with 11 points.Garett Reinking and Casen Burkholdereach put up 9 points as well.

For the Panthers, Hayden Clingamanled the way with 6 points. Teammates ZachSpahr, Alex Bost, and Cameron Frey each

contributed 3 points in the losing effort.

Wauseon’s JV Team LeavesPanthers Behind Early

(January 30th 2015) – DELTA:Wauseon’s JV boys basketball team tookcontrol early in their road game againstDelta. During the pursuit, the Indiansdemonstrated outstanding shooting fromthe free-throw line while pulling down de-fensive rebounds, resulting in a 38-23 vic-tory.

Wauseon’s forceful offensive strategyproduced 16 points for the team by theend of the rst quarter. Though only add-ing 4 more points in the second, strongdefense kept the Panthers at bay, scoringonly 2 points. After the break, the Indiansretained their commanding position, even-

tually totalling 38 points. Teammates Austin Rotroff and Chase

Brock led the team in scoring with 12 and11 points, respectively. Derek Andersonand Rotroff each claimed 4 defensive re-bounds each, while Brendan Britsch con-tributed 6 assists alone. The Indians alsototalled 6 blocks throughout the night toadd to their defensive tirade, while Deltacouldn’t muster a single one. Wauseonshot an astounding 92% from the free-throw line, missing only one shot.

The Indians’ victory set the tone for theevening, amplifying the anticipation for theVarsity game.

The Locos potent offense disappearedin the third quarter, however. The young

Montpelier would recover, though. Theywere able to keep ahead late into the con-test, forcing Evergreen to foul in order toextend the game. When it was all said anddone, Montpelier had claimed a 7 pointwin.

Gunnar Mason played a vital role in theLocomotive win. The junior had 9 points inthe game.

Kiess Scores Twenty-SevenIn Edon Loss To Hamilton

(January 27th, 2015) – EDON: AlexKiess provided most of the offense for theLady Bombers in their game against Ham-ilton.

The senior contributed 27 or her team's

collective points in Edon's 45-34 loss tothe Lady Marines on Tuesday, January 27.Kiess gave a phenomenal effort in the de-feat, grabbing 12 rebounds on her way toa double-double. She went 4 for 7 from thethree-point line, as well as 5 for 8 from thecharity stripe, also compiling 4 steals anda block.

The rest of the Bomber girls struggledmightily on the offensive end of the ooragainst Hamilton, however. Kaitlyn Sonne-berger, an Edon junior, scored 6 points of fof a pair of eld goals from inside the arc, while sophomore Eliza Zulch made but asingle free throw in the contest to roundout the rest of the Bomber scoring.

The two teams wrestled for control ofthe contest from the opening tip. After aback and forth battle in the rst quarter, the Lady Marines pulled ahead by a skin-ny 12-11 margin. They were able to buildon that lead in the second period, though, and the girls of Edon soon found them-selves down 25-17 and heading for thelocker room.

The hometown Bombers fell further be-

hind in the third period as well, thoughtheir defense played better coming out ofhalftime. Hamilton outscored Edon 8-4 inthe quarter. With their backs against thewall, the Lady Bombers gave everything

they had in the nal stanza. They camequite close to overtaking their guests fromIndiana on a couple of occasions, but theHamilton girls always had an answer. Bythe end of the game, the Marines had re-established most of their lead, winning by11.

While scoring was hard to come byfor most of the Lady Bomber roster, all ofthem played hard. Junior Breanna Da-vis, despite not being able to capitalize onsome openings in the Hamilton defensewith her mid-range game, still recorded 3rebounds and 3 steals. Zulch brought in2 boards and had a de ection. Sam Weid-mer, a sophomore, pulled down a reboundof her own, while also making a block anda pair of de ections.

Though they were unable to come awaywith the victory, the Lady Bombers dis-played a lot of heart against Hamilton. With senior Kaitlin Chrisman unable toplay with a broken hand, Kiess will likelyhave to continue carrying the scoring bur-den for this young Edon squad for the re-mainder of the year.

Wauseon Lady Indians Lose Heartbreaker At Home Against Delta

(January 29th, 2015) – WAUSEON: Thelady Indians went into Thursday’s matchagainst the Panthers with everything theyhad; unfortunately, it wasn’t enough totake down the #1 NWOAL girls team.

The Indians garnered every last ounceof ght within themselves throughout thenight. The thriller came to a climatic tip-ping point at the end of the 3rd quarterwhen Sariah Yackee tied the score at 38after two free-throws.

Turnovers proved to be key in keepingthe hope alive in the fourth quarter. Backand forth action between the two teamsdepleted the room of oxygen, both in theplayers and in the awe-instilled audience.

With 3:55 left and tied at 46, the Pan-thers would call a full timeout to recuper-ate and give Wauseon a chance to plantheir strategic maneuvers. Two and a half

minutes of gameplay later gave Delta alead of 50-49. Wauseon would call a time-out with 30 seconds remaining.

Natalie Koenig drove straight to thebasket to add two points – prompting atimeout by Wauseon with 11.5 seconds re-maining. The Panthers violated the throw-in and turned the ball back over to the In-dians. Delta’s defense began to mercilesslyswarm the Indians, causing frantic passingbetween the offense. Koenig would shootfar left and allow the Panthers to recoverthe ball with 2.5 seconds. Delta would goon to win 54-51.

Natalie Koenig lead the team in scoringwith 17 points. Sariah Yackee also contrib-uted 14 points in the resulting loss. Deltawould advance its undefeated 6-0 recordin the NWOAL with Wauseon adding a lossto revise their record to 4-2.

Stryker Panthers Pull Off Huge Upset Over Fayette

(January 29th, 2015) – FAYETTE: Inwhat is possibly the biggest upset of theseason so far, the girls of Stryker tookdown the Lady Eagles in Fayette.

The Lady Panthers, with a roster lled

with youth and inexperience, weren't ex-pected to do very well in 2015. Meanwhile,Fayette was a heavy, heavy favorite to winthe Buckeye Border Conference in thepreseason, and has mostly lived up to thehype.

None of that mattered last week, how-ever, as the Stryker girls beat the Eagles indramatic fashion, 43-41.

The Panthers got off to a strong start, taking control of the contest right away.

They claimed an early 13-4 lead by the endof the rst period. Fayette tried to battleback in the second quarter, but couldn'tsurpass Strykers' total for the period.Heading into halftime, the Panther girlscommanded a 26-15 advantage.

Fayette wasn't about to just fade away, however. Locking down defensively, theEagle girls surged in the third quarter.

They outscored Stryker 13-5 in that span, quickly evaporating the sizable lead held

by the Lady Panthers. Fayette continuedtheir run in the fourth quarter, overtakingStryker in the process.

This is where the dramatics come intoplay.

In the waning seconds of the contest,Stryker found themselves down a singlepoint, with the ball in their possession.Sophomore Taylor Haines drove the ballat the rim, electing to kick it out to wait-ing teammate Brittany Breier, who wasstanding behind the three-point line andready to shoot. The junior knocked downthe shot, giving the Panthers a 2 point win.

Breier led the Panthers in scoring with14 points, connecting on 4 threes to do so.Haines put up 12 points, while freshmanHaley Doehrmann scored 9. Audra Rupp,a junior for Stryker, made 6 points in thewin.

Taylor Grif ths helmed the Lady Eagleeffort, making 4 three-point shots on herway to a team leading 14 points. KaelaSeiler and Alexis Fruchey each added 9points to the Fayette cause. Senior team-mate Paige Keefer contributed 5 points inthe loss as well.

Hilltop Hangs On In HomeWin Over North Central

(January 29th, 2015) – WEST UNITY: The Lady Cadets had to cling onto theirnarrow lead for dear life, but they wereable to avenge a loss earlier this season torival North Central.

Despite a a few late runs made by theLady Eagles, Hilltop was able to hold ontoa 4 point advantage, taking the contest 54-50.

Hilltop pulled ahead during the open-ing quarter, closing out the period witha 13-8 lead. The girls of Pioneer refusedto fall further behind, however. They bat-tled back, claiming the second period forthemselves 15-13. That wasn't enough forthem to take control of the game, though,as Hilltop stayed ahead 26-23 going intohalftime.

North Central continued to chip away atthe Cadets' slight lead in the third frame, outscoring Hilltop 13-12. Just 2 pointsbehind heading into the fourth and nalquarter, the Lady Eagles stood poised totake the lead.

It never happened, though. The girlsof West Unity managed to counter everysurge by the North Central offense, suc-

cessfully keeping their guests at armslength. When the nal buzzer sounded, theCadets had topped the Eagles in the nalperiod 16-14.

Allie Schmitt, one of many juniors whohave stepped up for Hilltop this season, was the game's leading scorer with 20points. She did most of her work off of thedribble drive, though she did knock down

a three as well. Schmitt also made 4 as-sists in the contest as well.

Karissa Crisenbery, another Hilltop ju-nior, also had a huge evening, recordinga double-double. A 6 for 7 night at thefree throw line helped balloon her pointstotal to 12, which complimented her 10rebounds rather nicely. Sophomore CadetFelicity Jackson connected on a pair of tri-ples on her way to 15 points.

For the Lady Eagles, senior SabrinaPickford attacked the rim hard, while alsoexploring her mid-range game, as shescored 16 points. Fellow North Central se-nior Rachel Oxender put up 11 points inthe loss. Sophomore Mikayla Hayes made5 of her 6 free throw attempts as she con-tributed 9 points in the defeat as well.

match of the evening, Wauseon took on Na -poleon.

This contest proved to be a bit more dif -cult than the previous one, but it still wasn'tnearly as close as the 42-25 margin wouldindicate in the Wauseon victory. A pair offorfeits produced 12 of those 25 points forNapoleon. And though they did score a fewwins in the upper weight classes, the Wild-cats were mostly outmatched by the home-town Indians.

For the 145 pound class, Wade Hodgesscored a big win for Wauseon, pinning JoshMiller in 44 seconds. At 126 pounds, IndianAndrew Bailey won a tight 6-4 decision overSkyler Brown. Mikala Avina will becrowned Pettisville Home-coming Queen during the2015 ceremony precedingthe school’s Homecominggame against Ayersville.

Queen Mikala’s Courtrepresents a wide spectrumof the Pettisville studentbody.

Representing the new-est additions to PettisvilleHigh School is FreshmanAttendant Nichole Foor, thedaughter of Clayton andBeth Foor. Participatingin Cross Country, whereshe made it all the way tothe State Meet alongsidesophomore teammate Al-exa Leppelmeier, as wellas Basketball and Track,Foor also takes part in PepBand, Quiz Bowl, and Note-worthy. Such an activelifestyle requires a specialdrink to fuel her throughthe day, and Foor has sin-gled out the softly warm

comfort brought about byStella Leona Hot Chocolateas all she would need froma beverage.

Accompanying Foorduring the ceremony willbe Freshman Escort Jus-tin Rupp, brought into thisworld by Paul and ChrisRupp. Also quite involvedin school athletics, Ruppplays Soccer, Basketball, and Baseball. He also takespart in the Pettisville HighSchool Choir. His most em-barrassing moment, how-ever, came at a time whenRupp was simply having agood time during the schoolday. Attempting to hurdleover a chair in the school’satrium, the freshman boytripped in mid-jump. As aresult, he landed face- rstonto the hard oor. Add -ing insult to non-injury, anumber of students ockedto the of ce of PrincipalMichael Lane so that theycould watch the error. Re-peatedly.

The personality of Soph-omore Attendant TeaganKauffman, daughter toBrent and Heidi Kauffman,as well as Mick and DeniseNofziger, might best be de-scribed as a confetti cake,as she is a burst of many

different things. That men-tal versatility has led Kauff-man to involve herself ina diverse array of schoolactivities, such as StudentCouncil, Spanish Club,Softball, and Volleyball, which has stood out to herthe most so far in her highschool career. Despite do-ing so much, Kauffman isstill humble, opting to titlea potential movie on her life“Legally Redheaded.”

Kauffman will be es-corted by fellow sophomoreCaleb Rychener, who is theson of Troy and Sherri Ry-chener. When prompted to

choose between being toohot or too cold, Rychenerselected the heat, statingthat it would give him agreat excuse to wear shortseveryday. He already getsto wear the favored attireplenty while participat-

ing in Soccer, Pettisville’sBasketball and Track pro-grams. Rychener is alsoan active member of hisschool’s chapters in theFuture Farmers of Americaand FCCLA as well.

Junior Attendant Nata-lie Hoffmire, the daughterof Wes and Lynne Hoffmire,is the nostalgic sort. Herfavorite memories of schooltake her back to the play-ground in her elementa-ry days. There, Hoffmirefondly remembers playinggames such as hot lava, four square, and red roverduring recess. This youngat heart guitar player keepsbusy, serving as a memberof the National Honor Soci-ety, the Fellowship of Chris-tian Athletes, the LadyBlackbird Cross-Countryteam, and the Crossroads

youth group. She is oftenembarrassed during redrills, due mainly to thefact that she “jumps andscreams” as the re alarmblares.

Serving as Hoffmire’s Junior Escort will be MattKrill, son to Tom and CindyKrill. A native of Camas,Washington, Krill wouldrather return there than

travel anywhere in theworld. That doesn’t meanhe’s not enjoying his timein Pettisville, where he ispart of the National HonorSociety, the Fellowship ofChristian Athletes, SpanishClub, Golf, and Basketball.

When he’s not busy withthese school related activi-ties, Krill likes to play evenmore sports, eat, and, ofcourse, be lazy.

Dana Fricke, born toBill and Lynette Fricke, hasbeen elected by her class totake on the role of SeniorAttendant. The youngestof ve children, Fricke isa member of the NationalHonor Society, as well asthe Lady Blackbird Volley-ball and Basketball teams. In fact, she was named asthe 2014 Buckeye BorderConference Player of theYear in Volleyball this pastseason.

Senior Escort TateKauffman, the son of Brentand Heidi Kauffman, aswell as Mick and DeniseNofziger, will be accompa-nying Fricke to the ceremo-ny. Tate is also the olderbrother to Sophomore At-tendant Keagan Kauffman.

The elder Kauffman sib-ling, who favors evaporatedmilk over all other drinks, counts himself a part of theBlackbird Soccer, Basket-ball, and Baseball teams. His dream destination is abeach in Europe on whichhe can relax. However,

Kauffman’s immediate planfor the future is to study Ac-counting at Bowling GreenState University, where hewill share a room with fel-low Pettisville High Schoolgraduate Noah Miller.

A pair of senior boys will

be escorting Queen Mikalawhen she makes her grandentrance.

Ben Graber, the son ofRick and Deb Graber, willserve as one of those es-corts. When asked whatfood would best describehis personality, Grabernamed hot sauce for “ob-vious reasons.” He is amember of the school’sbasketball team, as well asthe Fellowship of ChristianAthletes. Not only that, butGraber is also active in thePettisville Missionary YouthGroup, where he is on theworship team. Upon grad-uation, Graber intends toattend Cedarville, where hewill study Mechanical Engi-neering.

Josh Liechty, son toChris and Holly Liechty, willalso be escorting the queen.A participant in NationalHonor Society, Quiz Bowl,

the school’s musicals, Soc-cer, and Basketball, Liechtyenjoys singing, listening tomusic, and wrestling his sis-ter, Rebekah. He would de-scribe his personality as be-ing like a fruit smoothie, ashe is both sweet and smooth.

After graduating from Pettis-ville, Liechty plans to attendGoshen College in order tostudy Pre-Med.

But it is Homecom-ing Queen Mikala NicoleAvina that will take cen-ter stage for the ceremony.

The daughter of Benny and Josie Avina, Mikala is activein school extra-curricularactivities, as she takes partin Noteworthy, NationalHonor Society, Soccer, andBasketball. Avina likensher personality to MexicanRice, because she’s goodwith everything. Given thechoice, she’d rather be toocold than too hot, so thatshe would have a reasonto get a hot chocolate fromStella Leona. Once herhigh school career is n -ished, Avina will go to col-lege, where she will majorin Exercise Science beforegoing on to Physical Thera-

py School. The Queen and her At-

tendants will be cheeringon their escorts, as well asthe rest of the Blackbirds,as they take on the Pilotson Saturday.
