a kid in the candy store. There are a ton of options

as to what to get. It all looks pretty good actually;

with lots of flavors, different sizes, and a myriad of

When to Eat If You’re Going to Exercise Don’t eat much right before a workout,

because your body will divert blood to your musclesand away from your digestive organs. Ideally, it’sbest to work out 2-3 hours after a meal.

Always eat breakfast. If you exercise beforebreakfast, you may reduce fatigue if you eat a pieceof toast or have some juice 25-20 minutes prior.

If you exercise before dinner or late in theday, make breakfast and lunch your main meals. Toboost energy levels, have a late-afternoon snack.

And definitely…don’t try and eat aWhopper during your run!

Ventless fireplaces provide a convenient, low-cost alternative to tradi-tional fireplace options, but they aren't trouble-free.

Ventless fireplaces, which don't include a flue or chimney, have beensold in the U.S. since 1980. They're powered by natural gas, propane,alcohol-based gels, and electricity. Although less expensive and easier toinstall than a traditional fireplace, ventless fireplaces suffer from a repu-tation of being unsafe, unhealthy, and cheap alternatives to "the realthing."

However, modern ventless fireplace models are strictly regulated by fed-eral agencies and standards groups for safe operation in your home,making them a viable, low-cost, supplemental heating option comparedto more expensive fireplaces. If you're considering the installation of afireplace in your home, here's what you need to know about ventlessoptions.

Types of ventless fireplaces

Ventless fireplaces are typically freestanding units that don't require orfeature a flue or chimney to exhaust combustion air to the outdoors,making them relatively easy to install in any room.

Those fueled by natural gas or propane can be positioned anywherethat a supply line can be installed-usually against a wall or inside anexisting masonry fireplace. The latest models also feature automaticignition, a function that eliminates the need for an outside electrical cir-cuit to spark the pilot light-a handy feature should the electricity ever goout.

Gel-fueled units are even more versatile, as they're completely self-con-tained (not tethered to a supply line) and light with a match. Electricunits need only a 120-volt outlet nearby, and a dedicated circuit isn'tnecessary.

What does "ventless" mean?

Ventless fireplaces fueled by gas or propane rely on indoor air for com-bustion, and they exhaust a low level of their combustion gases into theroom in which they're located. A chimney or flue isn't necessary.

The risk to your health is a long-standing and on-going debate. Propo-nents suggest that any emissions are negligible, and well within indoorair quality guidelines as set by various regulatory agencies.

Essentially, these products must meet the general requirements for allcombustible heating appliances established in the 2002 version of theNational Fire Protection Association's standards that require ventlessfireplaces to have factory-installed carbon monoxide monitors and oxy-gen detection safety devices (ODS). These safety devices automaticallyshut off the fireplace if the carbon monoxide level in the room risesabove 25 parts per million, and/or the oxygen level falls below 18%--lev-els for indoor air quality suggested (but not standardized or regulated)

Critics, however, claim that such monitors areunreliable and imprecise, allowing oxygen andcarbon monoxide levels to fluctuate out ofrange before the units shut down, resulting inpotential health hazards. The state of Californiacompletely bans these products, citing concernfor occupant safety and health.

Ventless fireplaces that use gel canisters or elec-tricity, meanwhile, are above that fray, as theydon't emit anything other than a low amount ofheat.

Any ventless fireplace is generally suggested forsupplemental space heating and perhaps aes-thetics alone. Those with automatic ignition orthat use gel fuel can supply a low level of roomheat for short spans of time and during poweroutages, when electricity isn't available.

Installation and maintenance

Ventless fireplaces that are connected to a gasor propane line require professional installationby a gas or plumbing contractor, and shouldn'thave a heating capacity that exceeds the appro-priate room size recommended by the manu-facturer.

Despite their relative ease of installation, andregardless of fuel source, ventless fireplacesaren't a turn-them-on-and-forget option. Allunits require at least annual cleaning of the logset and other exposed components, while gasand propane products should also have theiroxygen and carbon monoxide monitorschecked and adjusted annually for optimumperformance.

Although suppliers may tout the integrity offactory-installed carbon monoxide monitors,installing a hard-wired, independent carbonmonoxide monitor in the room in which thefireplace is located is a smart second tier ofsafety. Expect to pay $100-$200 for an hour ofan electrician's time and the monitor.

Costs

Gas- or propane-connected ventless fireplacesusually include a factory-finished enclosureand/or mantle. With professional installation,they cost $2,000-$6,000. Installation may notrequire a building permit, but check with yourlocal building department to confirm if thereare any regulations or limits on the use of aventless fireplace.

Gel-powered ventless fireplaces generally costless, $300-$700, and don't require professionalinstallation and associated costs. Some assem-bly by the purchaser may be required, includingthe placement of factory-supplied logs in frontof the gel canisters. The fuel comes in 13-ouncecanisters that cost about $3 and last about 2.5hours each. They are sold in cases of 24 forabout $80 or $110 for a dozen, 30-ounce refillbottles.

Electric fireplaces also are standalone, self-con-tained, and factory-finished, requiring no instal-lation other than removing them from the boxand plugging them into a wall socket. They costabout $1,000 and up, depending on the sophis-tication of the mantel and surround. Suppliersclaim these products produce a realistic flameeffect created by randomly filtered lighting, butjudge for yourself at a retailer before you buy.

Choosing the correct size

It's important to size a ventless fireplace for thesize of its room. A large, open space, such as agreat room, should handle a ventlessgas/propane fireplace with a 25,000 BTU orhigher output, akin to the heat output from asealed and vented gas fireplace.

For smaller rooms, such as a bedroom or bath-room, ventless gas- or propane-fueled fire-places can be sized down to 5,000 BTUs. Foroptimum control over heat output, these unitscan be regulated by a wall thermostat orremote control.

Gel-powered units can output up to 9,000 BTUs.Electric fireplaces, like space heaters, providevery localized output-at most, 4,500 BTUs-butwill remain working as long as they are pluggedin and switched on.

Regardless, ventless fireplaces of any kind andsize are nearly 100% efficient, as very little ofthe heat they emit escapes the room. By con-trast, an open-faced, wood-burning fireplacewith a chimney may lose 85% or more of itsheat output through the flue.
