to artists and arts audiences. Mean-while, “visual artists are challenged to find affordable studios, and artists in all disciplines are eager for opportu-nities to collaborate, share and learn skills, and show work,” according to the Create Charlottesville/Albemarle Cultural Plan.

“This new space is an exciting oppor-tunity for us to provide a much-need-ed, multi-function resource for artists and patrons in our community,” says Maureen Brondyke, executive director of New City Arts. “We are thrilled to expand our current offerings for local artists to include a dedicated, down-town arts space.”

The gallery, housed on 3rd St. NE, will primarily exhibit interdisciplin-ary, local artists. “New City Arts does an exceptional job of connecting art-ists with audiences in Charlottesville. Their gallery exhibitions serve as the front lines of this important work,” says Maggie Guggenheimer, a community arts advocate who helped coordinate the Create Charlottesville/Albemarle Cultural Plan. “By expanding to a larg-er storefront space downtown, they will reach more people, show more art, and spark more discoveries and cre-ative conversations in our community. I can’t wait to see it in action.”

New City Arts Initiative is excited to announce an annual artist-in-residence

program in the studio space located adjacent to the gallery. Applications for the residency program can be found on-line and are due September 1, 2015. The residency will begin mid-September and provide free, downtown studio space for a local artist.

“New City arts is already doing im-portant work to foster creativity in Charlottesville and this new space rep-resents an exciting next step for our city,” says Victoria Long, former New City Artist-in-Residence at The Haven.

New City Arts invites the Charlottesville community to a down-town moving parade from 10–11:30 AM on Saturday, August 22, to move the organization from its office at The Ha-ven to the new 3rd Street location. Volunteers will receive pinwheels for the parade and are invited to wear their favorite hats.

From 5–7 PM at 114 3rd St. NE on Friday, September 4, join NCAI for a six-year birthday party for the organiza-tion, official opening of the new art space,

and an exhibit opening reception for “Bird and Clouds,” by Charlottesville artist Dean Dass, exhibited courtesy of Les Yeux du Monde and sponsored by Blenheim Vineyards. The gallery launch will include an exhibit opening, Tattly temporary tattoos, balloons, and refreshments. At the launch, New City Arts will reveal the name of the gal-lery. This event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome.

NCAI will open this new arts space concurrent with the organization’s ex-isting partnership programs. NCAI will continue to facilitate The WVTF and Radio IQ Studio Gallery. NCAI’s part-nership with The Haven will continue through Housing2Home (supported by ArtPlace America), which is a collab-orative, client-responsive program that integrates artists into the housing stabi-lization process through creative inter-ventions around place-making.

In September, New City Arts will launch a crowd funding campaign to raise funds to support the necessary furnishings and small renovations that will make the new space more accessi-ble to community members, artists, and arts audiences.

HERE’S A QUICK QUIZ for music lovers – where on the East Coast do sixty of the world’s finest musicians come together for near-ly thirty events over a mere ten days? At Lincoln Center, smack dab in the middle of Manhattan? At the Kenne-dy Center, overlooking the Potomac in the nation’s capital? Or maybe at Tanglewood, the famed music center in the Berkshires of western Massa-chusetts? Answer: none of the above. In fact it is picturesque little Staunton in the Shenandoah Valley, with its hilly streets and historic churches, that is a classical music lover’s paradise every

August, with a 10-day chamber music festival – “a signature blend of whimsy and virtuosity” – ranging from the clas-sic to the contemporary.

The 2015 Staunton Music Festival, August 14-23, offers music by an ex-traordinary range of composers – 55 in all – from the Baroque glories of Bach, to the Broadway delights of Leonard Bernstein, the avant-garde provoca-tions of John Cage and the world pre-mieres of composer-in-residence Zach-ary Wadsworth. Noontime concerts are free. Evening concerts are ticketed and are preceded by free lectures, usually an hour beforehand.

“Staunton is one of my favorite plac-es to sing because of the quality of the musicians, the beautiful venues, and the engaging audiences,” says soprano Megan Chartrand, back for her third year. “I love the creativity and variety in programming and the fact that I al-

ways get to try something new there ev-ery time I come. We perform a vast ar-ray of music crossing the boundaries of time, genre, language and technique.”

“What makes this festival a unique experience is the programming,” agrees oboist Margaret Owens, an expert on Baroque performance traditions. “It’s rare that one can hear, in just one eve-ning, such variety of music on so many diverse instruments from different historic periods of development, all ex-pressing one theme.”

Violinist Airi Yoshioka lauds Artis-tic Director, harpsichordist and con-ductor Carsten Schmidt and Executive Director Jason Stell for a festival “that stirs the imagination musically as well as intellectually. By grouping the reper-toire under such headings as Law and Desire or Midsummer Ball: from Paris to New York, they provide the context for the audience to immerse themselves in a world provided by that perspec-tive,” Yoshioka says. “One of our jobs as musicians is to make music tangible and meaningful for the listener and I feel that they ingeniously provide a thread and a hook for an informed lis-tening.” What’s more, “the music-mak-ing is of the highest order. Carsten is a rare artist who has incredible musical

instincts and brilliant mind and it’s such a pleasure to play under him.”

Yoshioka’s experiences in Staunton have inspired her musically and pro-fessionally. “Rarely are we expected to be able to play both Baroque and con-temporary violin,” she says, “but at Staunton, so many people are versed in both. As a violin instructor, I have always felt that I needed to be more educated about the performance prac-tice of the Baroque period. Staunton was the catalyst for me to pursue this further.”

This year’s festivities begin at Hunt Hall on the campus of Mary Baldwin College with a Midsummer Ball – “a 1920’s party set somewhere between the City of Light and the Big Apple.” Cocktails are at 6:00 p.m. Dinner with the musicians is at 7. The concert at 8 consists of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Egmont Overture for orchestra, Johann Jakob Froberger’s Tombeau de Mr. Blancrocher for harpsichord, Gabri-el Fauré’s Songs for voice and harp, a number of Gershwin songs for voice and chamber ensemble, and Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche for clarinet and chamber orchestra. Dessert and dancing to the Jeff Decker jazz quartet in a nightclub setting will round out the evening. Formal or period dress is encouraged.

Shakespeare’s plays have inspired many memorable compositions over the years, including the Overture, Intermezzo, and Wedding March from Felix Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Henry Purcell’s Airs for voices and lute. The four-move-ment Concert Suite #2 from Leonard Bernstein’s jazzy gloss on Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story, includes four songs for singers and orchestra: Jet Song, I Feel Pretty, America, and a mon-tage of Tonight. All this music will be heard as part of Shakespeare on Love, Sunday, August 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the handsome Blackfriars Playhouse, the world’s only re-creation of Shake-speare’s own indoor theater. Most intriguing of all is the inclusion of a late 20th century work entitled Telaio: Desdemona, an operatic soliloquy for soprano, string quartet, harp, percus-sion and piano by singer and compos-er Susan Botti.

“Susan Botti is one of the major composers of our time,” Yoshioka says. “She has outstanding compositional skills and has such an original voice – I don’t know any other composer who writes the way she does. She is an in-credible singer herself and even her in-strumental music is always vocal and from the heart. No matter what style she writes in, every note has a meaning and is simply beautiful.”

Law and Desire, Monday, August 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, will feature the work of four composers – one Baroque, one Classi-cal, one neo-classical, and one contem-porary. The program begins with Four Laws, a work for two percussionists by Zachary Wadsworth, one of the leading composers of his generation. After this brand new duet, listeners will be tak-en back to the 1740s with J. S. Bach’s Contrapunctus XIV for string quartet. The piece is just one of 14 fugues in

Bach’s final work, The Art of the Fugue, an 80-minute long cycle revered for its elegance and sophistication. It will be followed by Ferruccio Busoni’s Fanta-sia Contrappuntistica, a 12-part piece for two pianos composed in 1910 in hom-age to The Art of the Fugue. The concert will end with selections from Don Giovanni, the great opera – some say the greatest – by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Time Machines, at Trinity on Wednesday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m., ex-plores aspects of time in music. “If you think about it, each instrument is a time machine,” says Owens, who will play both a two-keyed Classical oboe and an eight-keyed oboe from the early Romantic period on this program. “It is the machine of its time for making the music of its time.” The program opens with Haydn’s Allegro in C for me-chanical organ, followed by Ludwig van

Beethoven’s joking Canon for Maelzel (1812) for three voices and metronome, a work variously thought to have been improvised at a dinner party or to have been invented by Anton Schindler, a close and controversial associate of the composer. (Johann Maelzel claimed, disingenuously, to have invented the metronome). Haydn’s popular Sym-phony No. 101 is nicknamed “The Clock” for the “ticking” rhythm in its second movement.

James Madison University Professor Charles Dotas will show off very dif-ferent rhythms in a new jazz compo-sition, J-nome. “In the spirit of ‘Time Machines,’ I am peeling back the layers of various jazz styles,” Dotas says. “The journey begins in the present day and progresses backward to Jelly Roll Mor-ton’s Jelly Roll Blues, with a nod to Bill Frisell, Ornette Coleman, Benny Gol-son, Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman and Charlie Christian.” Oliver Mes-siaen’s poignant and ethereal Quartet for the End of Time for violin, clarinet, cello, and piano, is the closing piece on the program. Written and first per-formed in a concentration camp, it was inspired by a passage from the biblical Book of Revelation.

The Future (is not what it used to be), at Trinity on Thursday, August 20 at 7:30 p.m. will feature works consid-ered avant-garde in their day. Among

the best known – and to modern ears least challenging – compositions on the 11-work program are Bach’s Branden-burg Concerto No. 2 (1718), for recorder, oboe, violin, trumpet, strings, and con-tinuo, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 (1811). Among the more challenging still today are Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Klavierstueck IX (1952), for piano, and Edgard Varese’s Density 21.5 (1936), for flute. Usually the most quiet and al-ways the most unpredictable piece on any program is John Cage’s 4’33 (1947), which may be played on (or rather, at) any instrument, or any combination of instruments. The one vocal composi-tion, the sherbet course, so to speak, is

George Frideric Handel’s “Where Shall I fly,” from his oratorio Hercules (1745), for contralto, strings, and continuo.

The highlight of Baroque Inside/Out at Trinity on Friday, August 21 at 7:30 p.m. will be a complete perfor-mance of Antonio Vivaldi’s beloved The Four Seasons on period instruments. Written around 1720, it is composed of four separate violin concertos, each of which evokes a different season. It’s a staple of the repertory, and an audi-ence favorite as well. But what makes this performance truly special is that it will feature four different soloists. “We are unique in having four gifted violin-ists who are expert on baroque perfor-mance traditions,” Stell says. “The con-certos differ from each other, and we try to pair up the soloists to match the ‘personality’ of the music.”

In between movements the audience will hear madrigals by other Baroque masters, including Monteverdi, Gesu-aldo, de Wert, and Lassus. “The mad-rigals will be sung to provide contrast with the violin concertos, probably with related elements in the texts,” Stell says. Back in the 18th centu-ry, performances of the Vivaldi work would have been “quite informal. Oth-er music would certainly have been placed in and around the concertos. However, what we are going to do at in-termission, I am pretty sure, has never

been done in any other Four Seasons concert in history.”

Stell is surely right about that: Au-gust 21, 2015 will be the first time Vivaldi’s Four Seasons has been enliv-ened halfway through with the sound of “two bagpipers, followed by a solo bluegrass banjo/singer on one side of the churchyard, and on the other side a strolling accordion/singer singing bal-lads.” Signature blend of whimsy and virtuosity indeed.

Abandoned Queen, Mad King (or Fatal Attraction), at Trinity on Satur-day, August 22 at 7:30 p.m., features Henry Purcell’s heartbreaking late 17th century opera, Dido and Aeneas, based originally on Book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid. The program opens with Igor Stravin-sky’s Suite from L’histoire du soldat, scored for clarinet, violin, and piano, followed by Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto in F Mi-nor, BWV 1056 and Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, arranged by Vladimir Mendelssohn for piano and string sextet.

The Festival concludes at Trini-ty on Sunday, August 23 at 3:30 p.m. with one of Bach’s great vocal master-pieces, St. John Passion, an epic drama performed here by acclaimed soloists, a chamber chorus, and the Staunton Music Festival Baroque Players on pe-riod instruments. In 2014 the Festival presented Bach’s other masterful ora-torio on Christ’s arrest, trial and cruci-fixion, St. Matthew Passion.

Ranging across centuries, styles, and musical forms, the size and scope of the Staunton Music Festival, now in its 18th year, is impressive, but no more than the little city itself, which is home to the American Shakespeare Compa-ny, the Frontier Culture Museum, and the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Li-brary, as well as Mary Baldwin College. “Staunton is such a vibrant town!,” Owens says. “Not too many small towns support theatre, music, and fine arts at such a high level. Anytime I’m not making oboe reeds, I’m knitting or sewing – so I especially love all the bou-tiques featuring handmade things.”

Allen Persinger lives downtown and has been selling real estate in the area for 10 years. “I love the diversity,” he says. “I love the arts. I love the location. I love the topography of the land. A lot of people have come in and brought great ideas here and done good things.” Most of all, the city’s residents old and new have “recognized that what we have to offer in Staunton is history, architecture and beauty.” Not to men-tion Shakespeare. And come every Au-gust, glorious classical music. n

“An open house can be a valuable tool,” de-clares Debi Dotson, a REALTOR® with Better Homes &

Gardens Real Estate III. “A lot of people are pre-viewing 30-50 days before they really start looking for a property or getting a REALTOR®.”

Why Do People Visit An Open House?

While the majority of properties for sale can be “visited” on the Inter-net these days, most people realize the pictures only show what the picture taker wants you to see, so house hunt-ers want to see places in person. Some visit for entertainment, some want to see ideas for dé-cor, some are thinking of buying in the fairly distant future, and some are actively looking although they may not yet be using the services of a REALTOR®.

Serious lookers won’t settle for a video tour. Instead, they want to “ex-perience” the houses they are consider-ing. They may prefer to shop on their own and take their time. Or they want to “get a feel” for the neighborhood.

In fact, open houses are likely to at-tract people who live nearby. “Neigh-bors usually just want to take a peek and are probably not looking to buy,” observes REALTOR® Janet Matthews, owner of Charlottesville Town and Country. “On the other hand, you nev-er know who they know who might be moving to the area from out of town. Or they could have friends or family who could be potential buyers. The word can get around.”

In fact, she continues, some neigh-bors may really love the neighborhood and be thinking of downsizing or mov-ing to a larger house so they are also

potential buyers. This is exactly why some real estate brokers and agents make it a point to specifically invite neighbors to an open house with post cards or flyers.

Preparing for an Open House“I used to show horses,” says Dot-

son. “Out in the field they can look pretty muddy or messy, but come show

time, every hair is in place. The same thing should be true with a house.”

She puts a lot of emphasis on the first impression. “This is show day. This is getting ready for the prom. This is the day to put your best foot forward and be as perfect as absolutely possible.”

You’re not likely to have an Open House unless your house is already on the market, so you’ve probably

staged it to present an up-to-date im-age with neutral colors and plenty of space. Remember, you want potential buyers to visualize themselves in the house rather than feeling they are in someone else’s personal space. Be sure you’ve cleared away clutter, that your windows sparkle, and that every room is tidy. If you have pets, make them in-visible by hiding litter boxes, feeding bowls, pet beds, and toys and be extra careful there is no pet odor.

Before people even enter the house, make it inviting. “Don’t put off what buyers are going to see,” recommends Dotson. “Paint the front door right now. You want to make an impression

of good maintenance for the entire house.”

Your lawn should be freshly mowed, your shrubbery trimmed,

and your garden weeded. If you don’t have flowers blooming in the yard, have several pots of bright plantings at your entryway. A nice new welcome mat is a nice touch for a very modest investment and a seasonal wreath on the door is also cheerful.

Inside, consider setting the table with a few place settings and a pretty centerpiece. Fresh flowers—but not strongly scented ones—are also invit-ing. Open all the curtains and window blinds (unless you have a really bad view) to let in the light and turn on in-terior lights.

Remember that potential buyers and looky-loos alike are likely to open closets, drawers, and even medicine chests, so be sure they’re tidy and any-thing you want kept secure or private such as jewelry or prescription medica-tions is removed. Ideally, you or your REALTOR® will accompany visitors through the property, but if several people arrive at the same time, some may be wandering around alone.

The bottom line is that you want visitors to be able to pictures them-selves living in this wonderful, wel-coming, well-maintained house. A small platter of fresh-baked cookies with a bowl of seasonal fresh fruit and cheerful napkins can be that final inviting touch to make open-house visitors feel at home. n

When Marilyn Pribus and her husband sold their California house before moving to Charlottesville, the eventual buyer became interested in the property (which wasn’t at all what he thought he was looking for) during an Open House.
