What’s Happening Around Town?Atar Piano Trio performs Free Concert

The dynamic Jerusalem-based Atar Trio will bring their Mt. Nebo program of American and Israeli music to UVA on Monday, March 23rd at 8:00 p.m. in Old Cabell Auditorium. This free concert is an Arts Enhancement Event, supported by the Office of the Provost & the Vice Provost for the Arts, and co-Sponsored by the McIntire Depart-ment of Music and UVA’s Jewish Stud-ies Program.

This concert continues the Trio’s success in expanding musical experi-ences in the concert hall, combining the richness of musical tradition with the innovations of contemporary ap-proaches. In their “Mt. Nebo” program, the Atar Trio features music that draws on multiple folk elements: the Biblical past, as well as multiple ethnic and ver-nacular traditions.

This program, with its variety of styles and virtuosic elements draws on the strengths of the Atar Trio, known both for its compelling performances of traditional music and their enthusi-asm for interpreting the musical world around them. Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry Purchases New Facility

“Build Today, Feed Tomorrow” Capital Campaign Announced to Fund Facility Purchase and Ren-ovations. More than $200,000 in Matching Funds Available

Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Inc. has a new home to better provide food with kindness and compassion to low-income families in Central Vir-ginia. The local grassroots non-profit announced today the purchase of a new facility at 2050 Lambs Road and the launch of the “Build Today, Feed Tomorrow” capital campaign. Char-lottesville’s largest food pantry is now able to distribute food more efficient-ly to its neighbors in need.

“We are very excited about the new space. We’ve outgrown our current facility. The number of people seek-ing our services has doubled in three years. The larger space is necessary to continue providing free groceries to over 6,000 low-income neighbors ev-ery month. We are now able to better serve our clients by providing ample parking, a larger food distribution area, and expanded cold storage, ware-house and office space.” said Loaves & Fishes’ Executive Director, Margaret McNett Burruss. A move into the new facility is planned for late summer.

The purchase of the building was made possible by a $500,000 gift from Richard (Dick) & Julia Nunley, Caro-line Nunley Satira, and John Nunley. Family members own and operate Bet-ter Living Building Supply and Fur-niture in Charlottesville. $125,000 of the gift is contingent upon the receipt

of matching funds from other donors.“We have chosen to support Loaves

& Fishes because it addresses a basic need – the need for food. Jerry Den-ney, the volunteer founder and driving force behind the organization works tirelessly with hundreds of volunteers, part time staff and the full time Ex-ecutive Director. We were impressed with every aspect of the organization and the dedication of everyone in-volved. There is an enormous amount of work distributing food to so many. This larger facility will increase ef-ficiency and the benefits will be felt throughout the community.” said Dick Nunley. “We made a portion of the gift contingent upon the receipt of matching funds in order to en-courage others in our community to support the work of this little-known organization.”

The Perry Foundation has sup-plied an additional $105,000 grant to help with the purchase and renova-tions, which is also contingent upon the receipt of matching funds from other donors. In December 2014, the pantry won a $20,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to improve in-frastructure, which will also help with the building renovations.

The goal for the capital campaign is $1.2 million.

concorDance contemporary presents “re:Frame” a Dance Concert

concorDance contemporary (cDc) a Crozet, VA based professional dance company presents re:Frame, an intro-spective, storytelling dance concert. Seven dancers perform the work of 4 choreographers April 10th, 11th and 12th at Albemarle Ballet Theatre and The Haven. cDc is a 501(c)3 nonprof-it organization dedicated to creating a closer relationship between the audi-ence and artists.

re:Frame is a metaphor to change your perspective on the art and has a variety of underlying currents and themes.” – Veronica Hart, Founder and Director of cDc.

Kathryn Schetlick’s Landscape # 15: with circumstance peers into the constant attempt to “make sense,” and brings into question the possibility of stable positioning in a climate of con-flicting stories. Faith Levine’s Disjecta, Latin for scattered fragments of art, juxtaposes the dancers as both the art-ists and their medium. polloGENS, a portmanteau Veronica Hart fabricated from Jackson Pollock’s last name and

the word pathogen, was inspired by the similarity of shapes found in Pol-lock’s #14 and the Ebola virus. Several other new works premiere in re:Frame, including a solo and soundscape by Je-rusha de Waal, and a collaborative pas de deux with Jake Catlett.

Performances dates and times:Friday April 10th at Albemarle Bal-

conductor Michael Slon, the concert takes place Friday, March 27th at 8:00 pm in Old Cabell Hall.

Following their 2014 Fall Concert, which featured works the University Singers will be taking abroad on their 2015 International Tour, the Singers take the stage to present Ives’ challeng-ing and moving Psalm 90 with organ, Dello Joio’s “Jubilant Song,” and Ber-nstein’s early work “Hashkiveinu,” in addition to other works. The Chamber Singers will also appear, performing Copland’s expansive In the Beginning, depicting the creation of the world with musical language familiar from his evocations of the open prairie and rolling hills of the American heartland. The program also includes several fa-vorite American folksongs.

The University Singers is the pre-mier mixed-voice chorus at UVa, and recently has sung for the Les Misérables creators Alain Boublil and Michel Schönberg, as well as giving acclaimed performances of Handel’s Messiah and Verdi’s Requiem in Charlottesville. Founded in 1957, the group performs a cappella and accompanied choral literature ranging from chant to ma-jor choral-orchestral works, and the works of contemporary composers. Recent repertoire has also included Bach's Mass in B minor, the Bernstein Chichester Psalms, and Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, as well as short-er pieces by Britten, Pierce, Lauridsen, and Whitacre. Recent trips have tak-en the group to Atlanta, Boston, Buf-falo, Charlotte, Charleston, Chicago, Cincinnati, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Providence, and the Na-tional Cathedral in Washington D.C. Later this season, they join with the Charlottesville Symphony and Orato-rio Society of Virginia for performanc-es of Beethoven’s Ninth.

Founded in 2005, the UVa Chamber Singers is a select ensemble drawn from the University Singers, and performs a

wide variety of music for chamber choir ranging from early music to contempo-rary compositions. Recent performanc-es have included Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia, Vivaldi’s Magnificat, Whitacre’s Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Ma-chine, Allegri’s Miserere, and standards by Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, and George Gershwin. The ensemble has in recent years participated in a workshop with Peter Phillips, director of the world famous Tallis Scholars; collaborated with Three Notch’d Road, Charlottes-ville’s professional Baroque ensemble; and performed for Philip Glass during his 2014 U.Va. Arts Board residency.

Tickets for the concerts are $15 gen-eral/$5 students (UVa students may reserve a free ticket in advance), and are available at the UVa Arts Box Of-fice in the Culbreth building, online at artsboxoffice.virginia.edu or by calling (434) 924-3376. Tickets will also be available at the door.

At UVa, free parking is available in the C1 lot off McCormick Rd. Hand-icap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.

The Charlottesville Symphony Celebrates Bach’s 330Th Birthday

The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its 40th Anniversary season on Saturday, March 21, 8:00 p.m., at Old Cabell Hall on the U.Va Grounds, and Sunday, March 22, 3:30 p.m., at Monticello High School.

(Note: this is the only sunday concert during the orchestra’s 2014-15 season that takes place at monticello high school rather than at the martin luther king, jr. Perform-ing arts center.)

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21,1685. The orchestra, con-ducted by Music Director Kate Tamar-kin, celebrates his birthday and explores his impact in a program that includes his Concerto for Oboe, William Boyce’s

Symphony No. 5 and Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E minor.

Aaron Hill, Principal Oboe with the Charlottesville Symphony, is the soloist at both performances. Hill is an active recitalist and master class clinician, and serves on the music faculty at the University of Virginia. He plays En-glish horn with the Roanoke Sympho-ny Orchestra and spends each summer playing Principal Oboe with the Win-tergreen Festival Orchestra. He can be heard on a Naxos recording of William Bolcom’s Songs of Innocence which won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Album.

Mr. Hill occupies the endowed Jason I. and Ellen U. Eckford Principal Oboe Chair.

Sunday’s concert is underwritten by Lee Davidson Wilder and Scott C. Da-vidson.

Know the Score pre-concert lectures will be presented 45 minutes before Sat-urday’s concert in Minor Hall and in the Forum at Monticello High School on Sunday. Free of charge, these informa-tive and entertaining presentations by McIntire Department of Music Chair-man and Associate Professor of Music Richard Will offer both novice and ex-perienced patrons a deeper appreciation of the performances.

Free parking is available in the U.Va Central Grounds Parking Garage, locat-ed on Emmet Street, on Saturday night and at Monticello High School on Sun-day afternoon. Both venues are wheel-chair accessible.

Tickets are $10-45 for adults and $10 for students. U.Va students may request one complimentary ticket in advance. If you love a rural lifestyle but still want to attend cultur-al events or eat at a favorite restaurant in town, consider Madison County. Situated between Greene and Culpeper Counties, Madison is commit-ted to a comprehensive plan

that limits sewer facilities, making large commercial development (in-cluding typical subdivisions and big box stores) unlikely, and assuring the essential agrarian character of this spe-cial place for the foreseeable future.

Madison County also offers beauti-ful scenery and a multitude of outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping and fishing. In addition, residents who want variety can take advantage of easy access to the employment, shopping, educational, recreational and cultural benefits of Charlottesville, Fredericks-burg and DC.

The General Assembly created Madi-son in 1792 splitting it off from Culpep-er County. It was named for some of the forebears of President James Madison, author of the Bill of Rights, who owned property along the Rapidan River.

Much later President Hoover pur-chased land in Madison County and built a summer home called Rapidan Camp where he went to get away from the stress of his job. Hoover captured some of the allure of Madison when he stated, “...even the work of govern-ment can be improved by leisurely dis-cussions of its problems out under the trees where no bells ring or callers jar

one’s thoughts from the channels of urbanity.”

Today buyers in all ages and price ranges seek out the peace and quiet that Madison County offers its resi-dents. While a few people live in the town of Madison, most live in the surrounding rural areas on lot sizes ranging from three acres to very large farms. Many are retired, but the area is

also attractive to first timers who want more privacy and property, to people who work out of their homes some or all of the time, and to those who grow crops or have cattle and horses.

The Madison real estate market is in recovery and property is selling. However, this continues to be a great time to buy a home or land there as prices are still reasonable and interest rates very low, which means every-one from first timers on up can find a great deal. And if they are like their neighbors, they can expect to be hap-py and enjoy their stay for a very long time.

Madison’s Real Estate MarketMadison’s market is rebounding al-

though perhaps not as robustly as else-where in our area.

Long time Madison agent Bill Gen-try, owner of Jefferson Land and Real-ty, explained that prices are stabilizing there. This is good news in that it means they are no longer in free fall. However they are lower now than at the peak of the market, and he doesn’t anticipate any significant appreciation until after the 2016 elections.

The stabilization of prices is happen-ing across the board Gentry explained, including everything from small lot residential properties to building lots and multi-acre farms with a house on 30 to 300 acres. All of this is good news for buyers who, he indicated, are now coming out to make a purchase.

As a result he has seen some real in-creases in sales. For example, he sold six farms in the last 18 months. “Life goes on regardless of the economy,” he said explaining that people die, get promoted, have children and experi-ence other life changing events that make it necessary to sell their homes

and buy new ones. “They may get less than what they paid for the property but their lives move on,” he said, add-ing that they can deduct the value of their loss when they file their taxes.

Christiane Lindsay with Montague Miller and Co. agrees that the market is picking up. “Sellers are not getting

the prices they would like to get,” she said “but they are starting to realize the inflated market of a few years ago is not back.” She added that land prices have leveled off and that there is some building going on although these are mostly custom projects with few if any spec homes going up like during the boom years.

Why Madison?People choose Madison for many

reasons. Fabulous scenery is high on the list

of what brings people to this area. Patti Lillard with Montague Miller and Co. described mountain views as the num-ber one request she hears from most buyers. She added, however, that they also love the rural lifestyle where they can get involved with the community and where everyone knows each other. In other words, there is a quality of life here that appeals to many people.

One way residents meet each oth-er is through their participation in the schools. Julie Holbrook with Roy Wheeler Realty Co. is a native of Charlottesville who relocated to Mad-ison County where she raised four children. She described Madison as a quiet place where school activities are a big attraction and parents are very involved. “Even people who are not parents come out and support the lo-

cal sporting events at the schools,” she said.

The popularity of Madison is due in part to a slower, more laid back pace of life and it’s not unusual for them to stay a long time once they settle in. “Turnover is very slow in Madison,” Holbrook said.

Madison is also attractive because it is a place people can get away, yet it’s not so remote that residents can’t en-joy a lot of amenities without traveling a long distance to get to them. For ex-ample, Gentry enjoys going to events at the Kennedy Center in DC. “You can be there in just an hour and a half so you can get your culture and be back in a day,” he explained.

More space is another reason peo-ple settle in Madison where the small-est lot size is 3 acres. Gentry described Madison as a place that offers more “elbow room,” along with great views and a nice community.

While restaurants and oth-er diversions are very accessible in Charlottesville, Madison County is not lacking in good food and things to do. The Inn at Willow Grove, just across the county line in Orange, “is as good as it gets,” said Lindsay, who enjoys sharing it with friends and real estate clients.

Another popular spot is Graves Mountain Lodge known for its “all

you can eat” dining served family style during the week with buffets on weekends. Graves also hosts a variety of festivals there throughout the year, including a music festival in the spring and an apple harvest festival in the fall.

Who is moving to Madison?“People come from all over to retire

here,” Holbrook said. For example, Madison agents hear from people else-where in Virginia such as Richmond and Tidewater, as well as New England, Chicago and the west coast.

However, perhaps the two most popular places to relocate from are Northern Virginia and DC. Lindsay described some clients she is working with who now live in Sterling and want to find a country home in Madison. Some move in and commute to jobs in nearby urban areas, or in some cases telecommute during some or all of the week. Others use their property as a weekend getaway and plan to become full time residents after they retire.

Lindsay has also worked with fam-ilies that have no intention of relo-cating to Madison for good anytime soon. She described a couple with a young child and a dog. Both spouses liked their jobs in DC but wanted a safe place for their family to spend time on

Madison County GemsHistory and Heritage

James Lawson Kemper was a Con-federate major general, and Governor of Virginia from 1874 to 1877. His 1851 mansion has been restored and furnished in period style and will be open to visitors. The Historical Soci-ety will be on the grounds selling a new pictorial history entitled “Images of America: Madison County.” A rep-resentative of Shenandoah National Park will be on hand in celebration of the park‘s 75th anniversary.

Civil War re-enactors portraying Company C of Kemper’s own 7th Virginia Infantry Unit will set up on the mansion’s lawn to depict camp life during the war, and Kemper’s old commander Robert E. Lee will be on hand with his horse, Lucy Long. Lee impersonator Wells is a retired re-en-actor himself. Told he looked like Lee, Wells trimmed his mustache six years ago and let his beard grow out. It was a good move. As a Major he’d have to “run up and down in the hot sun in wool clothes.” As the General, he says, “Now I go stand under a shade tree if it gets too hot.”

MusicEvery festival needs a soundtrack.

In addition to the Marching Moun-taineers, a four-time Virginia Honor Band, Southern Breeze will play south-ern rock, William Walter will bring

the rock and funk, and David Leckie Gilmore will entertain with chart toppers and old favorites. For fans of acoustic music, Scuffletown will play folk and blues, Dark Hollow Bluegrass Band will pick old time mountain mu-sic, and Tim Seaman will play the flute and the hammered dulcimer.

Itumiray from Bolivia will play mu-sic from the Andes mountains on the pan pipes, and Johnsy [SIC] Gonza-les of Peru, who bills himself as The Whisper, will play ethnic music from North and South America on a vari-ety of indigenous wind instruments.

Good EatsThe all-volunteer Madison Fire De-

partment was founded in 1946 and has about 35 active members today. They sell grilled steak sandwiches at every festival, and they’ll have 600 steaks ready to go this time around. In fact if you ask safety officer and retired fire fighter Jack Fray, “a lot of people come to the festival just for the steak sandwiches.” The sandwiches and the fries, that is: “We buy potatoes and cut the french fries right there.”

They may come for the steak and fries, but they’ll find pizza and bar-beque too. The Ruritan Club will sell hamburgers and hot dogs, the Antioch Baptist Church will sell fried fish sand-wiches, and Crescent City Enterprises will bring Louisiana to Madison Coun-

ty with beignets and muffaletta sand-wiches. The Madison Inn will offer a menu with a vegetarian option.

Home to MadisonAdmission to the festival is free, and

the Madison Free Clinic will organize parking in exchange for a small dona-tion. Buses will leave from parking lots at Madison County High School on 68 Mountaineer Lane and Madison Wood Preservers on 216 Oak Park Road, and drop off passengers in the heart of Madison, a pretty nice place to be.

“I spent several years looking for an area that had good people, affordable property, a very slow growth program, and access to good hospitals, good schools and educated people,” says Jeanine Jensen. “So that’s how I land-ed in Madison. I moved here 7 years ago and I wish I would have done it 25 years ago.

The natives understand. “I grew up here,” Tracey Gardner says, “and when I was a teenager, I couldn’t wait to get out. I went into travel and tourism and quickly realized what we have: it’s a sense of peace that you get when you come home. We call it “Madison Pride.”

weekends away from the stress of a ma-jor urban area.

A big reason Madison is attractive to people from Northern Virginia and other similar areas is the difference in real estate prices between the two mar-kets. “Someone can sell a small brick ranch on a quarter of an acre in North-ern Virginia for as much as $700,000,” Gentry said. Since a nice property in Madison with acreage and privacy can be had for just $300,000, they can pay cash and put the balance in a nice in-vestment account to help fund their retirement.

Madison may also be a good choice for first time buyers, especially if they are willing to commute to work in or-der to enjoy the kind of privacy they will find there. FHA loans with 5 per-cent down are available for those who qualify and now that is a little easier than it once was. Lindsay explained

that some recent changes have loos-ened some of the regulations for this kind of financing.

Rural Development loans, which offer 100 percent financing, are also available. Gentry has had a few of his clients qualify for these recently. How-ever he cautions that for this kind of low down payment loan both the buyer and the house must qualify; a possible problem with some older homes, for example one without central heat.

Farm buyers are another group now active in the Madison market. Gentry described them as families doing well in their business or perhaps two in-come households. “These are people with some grey hair, in their mid to late 40s,” he said.

Even though these individuals are relatively affluent and can afford a higher end property, many are not will-ing to borrow the maximum they qual-ify for Gentry explained. “Before they spend money they shop hard looking

for good value,” he continued, explain-ing that history has made them leery of being under water on their loans. More than one of the farms he has sold recently were for sellers who ended up selling for less than they paid for the property when they bought it.

Tourist Attractions Bring Visitors and Home Buyers to Madison

People learn about the benefits of liv-ing in Madison County in many ways. However, often it happens that they come first as tourists, fall in love with the area and decide to relocate there.

The easy availability of outdoor ac-tivities such as fishing, hiking, camp-ing and climbing are big attractions. President Hoover described the joy of fishing in Madison as an “opportunity for refreshment of one’s soul and clari-fication of one’s thoughts by solitude.”

Another big draw is the local winer-ies, which offer tours and wine tastings as well as special events such as wed-dings, music by local bands or seasonal festivals. One of these, DuCard Vine-yards, is the only solar powered winery in Virginia.

Visitors who want to stay for sever-al days can take their pick of B & B’s some with interesting histories such as Ebenezer House, built in 1901 in Cul-peper and dismantled and moved to Madison in 1984.

If beautiful views, privacy and a country lifestyle appeal to you, ask your agent about Madison County. With prices and interest rates still low, now is a great time to buy, and you can rest assured that your property will remain rural and free of encroaching development for a very long time. n

“MATURE AND YOUNG TREES as well as herbaceous shrubs and fruit-ing species add value and curb appeal to most properties,” declares REAL-TOR® Sara Greenfield. The founder of Charlottesville Fine Homes and Prop-erties, her college degree was in Forest Management and Outdoor Education.

Greenfield explains she was very spe-cific about leaving mature oak, maple, and elm trees on her property when she built her Albemarle County lake-side home. “Builders tend to remove all trees off the land,” she laments. “This is sad because trees provide shade and cooling in the summer as well as a place for birds to sit and sing. They also pre-vent erosion, absorb some noise, and are great visual buffers.”

Many homeowners in central Virginia seem to agree with Green-field about the value of trees. In fact, Charlottesville is designated a Tree City USA. This national program pro-vides the framework for community forestry management. The four qual-ifying standards include maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day.

Charlottesville takes an active role in preserving, expanding, and educat-ing the community about its urban forest. The City has an appointed tree commission to advise on urban forest management efforts and policies, while the City Parks Department plants and maintains trees on public property such as parks, schools, and right-of-ways.

Local Volunteers For TreesThe Charlottesville Area Tree Stew-

ards (CATS) is a group of volunteers who support rural and urban forests by

increasing public awareness of the value and beauty of trees, educating residents about tree care, and partnering with local government agencies and civic groups to improve and restore the tree canopy in the area. “Ideally,” says CATS President Rosanne Simon, “we would like to have our canopy about 40 per-cent. That sequesters a lot of carbon.”

CATS also encourages native trees. “We strongly recommend that people plant indigenous trees because the lo-cal insects and birds depend on them,” continues Simon. “If you bring in trees from other countries, the insects don’t like them so the birds don’t like them.” As an example, she says, our native oaks can be home to more than 300 different types of insects—many bene-ficial—and those bugs attract and feed our birds. “Oaks are some of our state-liest trees,” she says. “Other native trees are tulip poplar, sycamore, hazelnut, maple, redbud, and dogwood.”

CATS will mount a plant sale at the Ix complex in conjunction with Master Gardeners on March “We’ll be stress-ing native trees at reasonable prices,”

she says. “Three-year-old trees are only $5 and five-year-old trees are $10.” Varieties will include many kinds of oaks, plus chestnut, persimmon, hick-ory, and a number of other trees and shrubs.

CATS also sponsors mini-work-shops. “You can gather a small group of neighbors and we will come to your area,” she explains. “We’ll talk about all aspects of trees.” For more infor-mation on the tree sale and other ac-tivities, visit www.CharlottesvilleAre-aTreeStewards.org

What Is A Tree Worth? There’s little question most home-

buyers viewing similar dwellings, one with trees and the other with none, will opt for the treed property and likely will be willing to pay more for it. In fact, American Forests, the nation’s oldest nonprofit conservation orga-nization, notes that homes with trees sell faster and are worth between 4 – 15 percent more.

Trees like those on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall incline people to lin-ger at shop windows and spend longer

shopping. They also help purify the air and control a community’s storm-water, slowing rainfall through their leaves and filtering water through their roots to improve groundwater quality.

Trees actually have a measurable dollar value. In fact, if trees are dam-aged or destroyed, owners might receive compensation through insurance or a claimed loss on their income tax form. While there are some widely recog-nized valuations, there are several ways to establish a tree’s value. This means it is important to find an experienced appraiser—probably a Certified Arbor-ist. While the loss of a tree due to sim-ple old age or insect damage is seldom covered by insurance, a sudden event such as flood, lightning, vandalism, or auto accident is deemed a casualty and may be covered. It’s always wise to have an up-to-date photographic record of your property and trees.

“Healthy trees require good root systems, and new branches in order to provide the nourishment it needs to withstand drought, wind, and tem-perature changes,” concludes REAL-TOR® Greenfield. “The healthier the tree, the less likely it will succumb to blight, drought, or insect infestation. Be sure to care for your trees to enjoy their beauty and contribution to your property.”

So, if you’re preparing to plant trees, get good advice on the best species for your situation. Take care of them as they grow, and enjoy the benefits and added value to your home. n

Marilyn Pribus and her husband live on a ridgetop in Albemarle County near Charlottesville. On two occasions, their homeowner insurance covered the removal of separate lightning-struck trees. Happily, they still have plenty of trees remaining.
