What’s HappeningAround Town?“Old Jube” Interprets life of General Jubal Early

Ted Hughes will give a first-person interpretation of the life of General Jubal A. Early in his presentation of “Old Jube” on Thursday, Novem-ber 20, at 7:00 p.m. at the Gateway, 329 West Main Street, Waynesboro. Hughes brings history alive in this presentation, taking audiences back to the evening of March 1, 1865 to share memories and stories about the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Hughes is a ranger with the national Park Service on the Blue Ridge Park-way and has been a student of Civil War history for most of his life.

Lt. General Jubal Early was known for his harshness and wide use of profanity. Robert E. Lee referred to him as his “Bad Old Man.” Born in Franklin County in 1816, Early grew up on his father’s tobacco plantation. He studied at West Point, fought in the Seminole and Mexican Wars, and practiced law until Virginia seceded from the United States in 1861. He became one of Lee’s most loyal and dependable officers and earned his heroic reputation in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. Traveling north from Lynchburg, Early got close enough to Washington to scare Lincoln, and tied up between 40,000 and 60,000 Union troops with 14,000 of his own, poorly-supplied troops.

Early was finally defeated in March 1865 at Waynesboro, a few weeks be-fore Appomattox, and was relieved of his command afterward. At war’s end, Early did not surrender. He was later pardoned.

Admission to this event is “pay what you will” with a suggested do-nation of $5.

SArA Hires New Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the Sexual Assault Resource agency (SARA) is pleased to announce that Rebecca Weybright has been hired as the new executive director. She comes to SARA with considerable experience. She worked previously at the Richmond YWCA Women’s Ad-vocacy Program, an agency provid-ing services to domestic violence and sexual assault survivors, and Virgin-ians Aligned Against Sexual Assault, the statewide coalition of sexual as-sault crisis centers. Weybright also worked as executive director of the Charlottesville Free Clinic and the Community Children’s Dental Cen-ter. She replaces Margaret Mikkelsen who left SARA due to family needs out of the area.

Claude Worrell, chair of the SARA Board, stated, “SARA’s services are crucial to the community. Ms. Wey-bright’s strength as a leader and her extensive experience in similar orga-nizations make her the right person for SARA. The Board is looking for-ward to continuing to expand the direct services and community pro-grams that SARA provides.”

“In just the first few days that I have worked at SARA, I have been impressed with the dedication of the staff and board and the quality of services that SARA provides to the greater Charlottesville community,” Weybright stated. “From direct ser-vices to survivors of sexual violence to prevention education with chil-dren and teens, SARA holds a signifi-cant place in the community. I look forward to building on the prior suc-cess of the agency.”

The mission of the Sexual Assault Re-source Agency (SARA) is to eliminate sex-ual violence and its impact by providing education, advocacy, and support to wom-en, men, and children. SARA provides direct services to survivors of sexual as-sault, and their family and friend; preven-tion education, primarily to schools and youth-serving organizations; training for allied professionals such as medical and legal professionals; and community train-ing and awareness events. Services are provided free to all survivors, regardless

of race, gender, sexual orientation, gen-der expression or identity, age, economic status, education, parenthood, physical and/or mental abilities, national origin, or any other status. SARA works with the communities of Charlottesville, and Al-bemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson Counties.

Montpelier Foundation Appoints New President

Katherine Imhoff has been named the new president of The Montpelier Foundation.

After her undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture, she spent most of her career in the Virginia Piedmont. A leading pres-ervationist, she was Executive Direc-tor of the Preservation Alliance and then Chief Operating Officer of The Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello. She also served as Chair of the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and Chair of The Journey Through Hallowed Ground.

For the last five years, Imhoff has been Montana State Director for The Nature Conservancy. There she has led TNC’s Montana Legacy Project—the purchase of over 300,000 acres in western Montana for about $500 million and the largest conservation project ever undertaken by The Na-ture Conservancy.

Imhoff will start on January 1.

Crafts for Critters Pre-Holiday Fair & Adoption Event

On Saturday, November 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn located at 1901 Emmet Street you can start your holiday shopping and in doing so, support the animals at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA.

This annual Pre-Holiday Crafts for Critters Fair will feature a host of lo-cal artisans and crafters selling their

unique wares in support of the ani-mals at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. Face painting, adoptable pets and raffle prizes will make this a fun day for the whole family. With a vari-ety of locally made arts & crafts, this is the perfect chance to get your holi-day shopping done early, or pick out something or a special furry some-one for yourself.

The vendors represented at this year’s Crafts for Critters Fair will offer everything from handcrafted soaps and candles, to pottery and handmade jewelry and more. Also at this event, the SPCA will be of-fering an incredible $20 special on kitten adoption fees. This adoption deal even includes services normally costing hundreds of dollars: spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, deworming, Felv testing, a free visit to participating vets, a bag or Science Diet kitten food, an animal behavior CD and a lifetime of priceless love and companionship.

Lisa Lane, SPCA Director of Mar-keting and Development noted, “This event offers the community a shopping opportunity that they can feel good about. You can find that special gift for just about everyone on your list while shopping locally made items and supporting animals in need.” Crafts for Critters organizer, Heather Gerry of the Jade Butterfly explained, “This is the seventh Crafts for Critters event, and it gets better each time. We are so grateful for all the artists and business partners for making the Crafts for Critters show such a wonderful day. This year, we hope to see lots of kittens find their forever homes during the event. We just love the opportunity to support such an important cause.”

The mission of the Charlottesville-Al-bemarle SPCA is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the lost, aban-doned, and homeless animals of the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albe-marle and to increase the number of these animals being placed in appropriate, lov-ing, and permanent homes through adop-tions, foster care, and outreach, and to set a standard of excellence and leadership in shelter animal care, humane education, and progressive animal welfare programs. For more information about the SPCA call 434-973- 5959 or visit our website at www.caspca.org.

Is a Reverse Mortgagefor you?

John O’Connor 434-249-4080 or 866-201-4897

Reverse mortgages are a special type of federally insured home loan that allows seniors to convert the equity in their home into cash.

They can give older Americans greater financial security to supple-ment social secu-rity, meet unex-pected medical expenses, make home improve-ments, and more.

There are several ways to receive the proceeds from a reverse mortgage.• Lump sum – a lump sum of cash at closing.• Tenure – equal monthly payments for as long as the homeowner lives in the home.• Term – equal monthly payments for a fixed number of years.• Line of Credit – draw any amount at any time until the line of credit is exhausted.• Any combination of those listed above.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss anytime or schedule to meet in my office or in the privacy of your home.

All meetings are absolutely no-obligation and confidential.

Lender takes the deed/title to your home. This is not true!Title on a reverse mortgage is no different than any other mortgage you’ve ever had – only the homeowners are on the title.

You need good credit for a reverse mortgage. This is not true!A reverse mortgage is only based on your home’s equity and the borrower’s age. Income and credit are not qualifying factors.

Reverse mortgage borrowers owe more than their home is worth. This is not true!Reverse mortgages are “non-recourse” loans which means that the borrower can never owe more than the value of the home regardless of loan balance.

Common MYTHS to a Reverse Mortgage:

Take a 17-mile drive south of Charlottesville on Route 20 and you will arrive at the intersection of Route 6 and the historic town of Scottsville. Found-ed in 1744, Scottsville served for a time as the Albe-marle county seat.

By Celeste M. sMuCker, PhD

A Renaissance in

Today it is part of the Charlottesville SMSA and straddles the three coun-ties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, and Buckingham. It is a town that enjoys a rich history as well as a growing list of amenities that are attractive to both residents and visitors to this once sleepy town on the James.

In the 1700s when Virginia’s rivers were a main means for transporting people and supplies, Scottsville’s loca-tion on a horseshoe bend of the James River gave it a lot of prominence, as did the nearby James River and Kanawha Canal built prior to the Civil War to facilitate movement of goods and ser-vices from west to east.

Scottsville’s prominence was also enhanced because it was connected by a toll road to points west such as Staunton and the greater Shenan-doah Valley. This made it an impor-tant drop off point for agricultural goods on their way to Richmond and beyond adding to its importance as a commercial center.

By the late 1800s, though, river trade lost out to railroads, some of which were built on the tow path of the canal, and Scottsville’s impor-tance declined.

Today, Scottsville is enjoying a renaissance. According to Peter Lee, REALTOR® with Roy Wheeler Re-alty, 25 years ago it was not uncom-mon to see boarded up buildings in downtown Scottsville. Frequent flooding, due to the town’s proximity to the James River, made it difficult for businesses to stay open. In the early 1980s, however, then Mayor A. Raymond Thacker was instrumen-tal in bringing Federal money to the area to pay for a levee built by the Army Corps of Engineers. The result was protection from floods, making it possible for business to once again thrive in downtown Scottsville.

Today it is a scenic place with a small town atmosphere. No longer do you see boarded up buildings. Instead, downtown businesses have been joined by a brewery, restau-rants, a pool hall and (very soon) a book and coffee shop. In addition. Scottsville offers what Lee calls “vi-brant community based” arts, crafts and performing arts activities, which add a whole extra dimension to life there.

Call John J. rady for appointment at 434-981-9663 or visit Cliffside at johnrady.com for a pictorial preview and link to historical Scottsville

CLIFFSIDE, c. 1835Rich in history, the residence was once the center piece of a 2000 acre James river estate. Gilly Lewis a doctor and mill owner built Cliffside as his personal residence. In 1865 during the war between the states the home was commandeered by Generals Philip Sheri-dan and George Custer as their headquarters.

Cliffside is a special antebellum brick home laid in beau-tiful Flemish bond with copper roof and gutters. List-ed on the National and Virginia Registry of Historic Homes. Superbly renovated with well proportioned rooms, high ceilings, crown moldings, heart pine floors and 8 fireplaces. Situated on nearly 14 private fenced acres within the town limits of Historic Scottsville. Thegardens are very special with beautiful magnolia and boxwood. Quaint terraced gardens, fountains, an in ground pool and a pond in the woods.

The dependencies consist of the Ginger House, guest house and Chapel( art studio). All are charmingly ap-

pointed and in excellent condition. The two car garage, three car carriage open carport and paved drive are additional amenities Seller leaving Virginia and is motivated to sell. MLS # 503711 Offered at $1,130,000

Scottsville’s Small Town Atmosphere

The current president of Scotts-ville’s Chamber of Commerce, Cyn-thia Bruce, is the owner of High Meadows Vineyard Inn, a B & B just north of town. She described Scotts-ville as a place with “adorable small town charm, and a great place to live and open a business.” She is espe-cially proud of the town’s efforts to preserve historic buildings.

Scott Ward, the owner of A. Scott Ward Realty, Inc. and a native of Scottsville, is a Korean War veteran who left the area for 40 years be-fore he returned 27 years ago. He describes his hometown as a place where people care for each other. “It’s like a big family,” he said. “It’s also a safe place to live and raise children. Kids can walk safely in town, which is clean and has very little crime.”

Another prominent local REAL-TOR® is Larry Barnett, owner of Bar-nett Real Estate. Barnett had lived in a lot of other places when years ago he and his wife had lunch in a Scotts-ville restaurant and found they kept coming back. Eventually they bought a farm nearby in Fluvanna County, although now they live in Southern Albemarle.

Barnett initially had reservations about the move to Scottsville as his wife originally is from Manhattan and he was concerned the small town lifestyle would be too much of an adjustment after the big city. How-ever, they both love the area and he describes Scottsville as a place with a “wonderful mix of people from all walks of life.”

Although close to Charlottesville with its many cultural activities, Scottsville is “its own community,” said Lee. It is also self-contained. People can find most of what they need there including a major grocery store, medical care, restaurants, and recreational activities.

Scottsville’s Real Estate Market

People looking for a house in Scottsville have many options. Bar-nett explained that not only is the town a wonderful place to live, but there is a wide range of prices—every-thing from the low $100,000s up to a $1 million, depending on the size and location of the home and the number of acres that come with it. In other words, there is something for everyone.

Another advantage is that Scotts-ville homebuyers have three different

counties to choose from, each with its own school system and each with a little different lifestyle.

For example, when you live in Albe-marle you are closer to Charlottesville with its “broad array of services,” said Jim Bonner, with Roy Wheeler Re-alty, Inc. Albemarle also has a stron-ger economy with more to offer job wise.

On the other hand, for someone looking for a great deal, Buckingham offers both lower real estate prices and lower taxes, explained Barnett. He personally likes Fluvanna County

where he lived for a number of years and where he continues to own some rental properties. Prices there are a little higher, which means lot sizes are often smaller. For this reason Flu-vanna attracts people who enjoy living closer to their neighbors, Bruce said.

For people who don’t want acre-age, there are good values in town said Bonner, who described Scotts-ville as an attractive place with “a village atmosphere and quaint older homes.” He recently worked with someone who moved to this area from California and chose Scotts-ville over Charlottesville because of its “relaxed feel and unhurried atmo-sphere.” The market is a little slower in Scottsville, he continued, but it of-fers many good values.

Bruce described Scottsville as a bed-room community of Charlottesville where property is “affordable,” and where people can choose to live in town or, if they want more privacy, have the option of nearby acreage. In other words, she said, “it offers the best of both worlds.”

How is business? It’s good, said Ward whose real estate office was the first in Scottsville and is today one of the top ten in CAAR (Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS®).

Who’s Moving to Scottsville?Scottsville attracts a variety of

buyers. Bruce said many people who live there commute to Charlottesville every day for work. “We see a lot of young families who want space and a back yard garden,” she said. “These are people who appreciate the histor-ic and amazing properties available for good prices in Scottsville.”

Lee said the area attracts young professionals who like the feel of the town and the older buildings. “It is especially appealing to people who don’t have to commute, such as peo-ple who have a home based business or who are retired,” he added.

Barnett agreed, citing a sale to a retired executive from the west coast, a UVA grad, who is very excited to be moving here. He worked with an-other buyer, a retiree from Virginia’s

tidewater area, who moved to Scotts-ville after he fell in love with an older home on 50 acres.

Bonner added that in the Scotts-ville area there are many beautiful farms and estates to choose from for those who want more acreage or who like a lifestyle that includes horses and cattle.

“They come from all over, “ said Ward, who has worked with people from New Jersey, New York, Texas and California. “They find the prop-erties online before they ever arrive in town,” he continued. He once had a buyer from Sweden who found the property he wanted and purchased it based on what he could see online. He subsequently moved to Scotts-ville, loves the area and has stayed for many years.

A Growing List of AmenitiesAccording to Barnett, Scottsville’s

current mayor and town council are pro growth and pro business. As a re-sult, a lot of exciting things are hap-pening there.

For example, Scottsville’s down-town, one of its many attractions, is today being spruced up and made more visitor friendly courtesy of a Streetscape project which combines local and state funds to improve downtown aesthetics. Bruce de-scribed some of the upgrades, which include brick sidewalks, improved

crosswalks, and planters and bench-es, all of which will add to the ambi-ance of the downtown area and make it easier to navigate for both residents and visitors.

The number of new businesses in town is also a source of pride for resi-dents. Just about everyone mentioned the new James River Brewery, which invites you to come by and sample their wares in their tasting room. Tav-ern On The James, another new addi-tion, is a restaurant that just under-went a $1 million plus renovation and features, amongst other things, fried green tomatoes. Pool lovers can visit Joe’s Pool Hall and Sports Bar now open for beer, pool, and casual food.

Local residents also look forward to the arrival of Baines Books and Coffee, an Appomattox-based busi-ness that will soon open a second lo-cation on Valley Street in Scottsville. Baines features live music, pottery and specialty DVDs, along with cof-fee and books. It also sells some mu-sical instruments and prides itself on being a great place to just hang out.

Outdoor ActivitiesScottsville is a great place to live or

visit if you enjoy the outdoors. “There is an amazing array of nature trails,” which are part of the nearby Van Clief natural area, Bruce explained. “There is also a large lake in the heart of Scottsville that was formed when they built the levee,” she said.

The town website is now soliciting comments about a proposed project which would add better access to the na-ture area, along with more trails, a picnic area, hand rails and improved signage.

Of course the river offers a lot of recreational activities. Lee described it as “the area’s biggest attraction, great for anyone who loves to canoe, tube, swim or fish.” It runs right through Scottsville and the local ca-noe liveries attract lots of people, he continued.

The river is also the focus of an annual event called the Bateau Festi-val, which is celebrated in Scottsville

on the third Wednesday in June. Lee explained that when the canal was in operation, the most common mode of transport was big flat-bottomed boats called bateaux, which floated down the James to Richmond carrying peo-ple and goods to market, stopping in Scottsville along the way. After they reached Richmond, the boats were poled back. Every year volunteers, who build their own boats, recreate this journey dressed in period costumes. This year, 2012, was the 27th time this festival was celebrated.

eHave you considered installing a home secur ity system? Good reasons to do so are to protect your family members from intruders and to pro-tect your belong-ings from vandal-ism and theft. Some

systems also alert authorities if you have a fire or carbon monoxide leak, while others allow you to call for help in the event of a medical emergency. Other popular options include re-mote access so you can check on your house with your cell phone or tab-let and motion detectors that cause bright lights to come on when some-one walks near your house.

Installing a security system in-volves putting sensors on doors and some windows. These then alert your control panel when someone tries to enter. There are also sensors that send a signal when glass breaks and are useful for large windows or French doors. Once the control panel is alerted, unless someone quickly in-puts a code, it sets off an alarm.

Security system owners have the option of paying a monthly fee for monitoring. With this service your control panel sends a signal to a central monitor-ing station when it detects a threat. The monitoring station then alerts the appropriate authorities after first checking to assure the threat is genu-ine. If you don’t have monitoring, the alarm still goes off (and may be suffi-cient to scare off many intruders) but no call goes out. If you live in a com-munity where people look out for each other and where neighbors are

frequently at home, having the alarm without the monitoring may be suf-ficient, although it is not as secure.

Some security systems connect the sensors to the control panel with wires. In an existing home this option is expensive to install, as it requires drilling holes in the wall and running wires from the sensors to the control panel. If you are buying a new home a pre-wired security system may be an option to consider.

Effective wireless systems are also available, and do it yourselfers may find them relatively easy to install. Wireless systems require batteries to operate, which must be changed every several years. Because of the batteries the sensors are bigger and more obtrusive than those used with wired systems. Depending on your circumstances, you may find that a combination of wired and wireless technologies works best.

How your security system com-municates with the central moni-toring station is an important con-sideration. While all systems used a landline at one time, today cellular communication is available and is a better choice since lines can be cut. Systems that use cable or DSL are similarly vulnerable. Some wireless systems also utilize cellular commu-nication between the sensors and the control panel.

As with any consumer product, price is a big consideration. However, according to a recent article in the Chicago Tribune, with security systems there can be huge variations (as much as $1,000 or more) in price for the same services. For this reason it is im-

portant to read reviews and research carefully before making a decision. A good place to start is a website called “A Secure Life” which fea-tures independent reviews and side-by-side comparisons of many different companies.

When you find a company you like, be sure to read the fine print on the contract. Lower up front fees are usually associated with longer con-tracts. However, there may also be fees to pay if you decide (for what-ever reason) you no longer want the service. Also ask about warranties on the equipment and what happens if you move. A big advantage of wire-less systems is that they are easy to dismantle and reinstall in your next home.

The down side of any security system is remembering to turn it on when you are away and at night while the family is asleep. And of course, once armed, you need to remember to turn it off if you have to make a quick trip out to pick up groceries, or just run out to get something you left in your car. Too many false alarms are likely to result in fines from your lo-cal police.

On the other hand, the peace of mind that comes with one of these systems may make it all worthwhile. Research shows that intruders are less likely to break into a home that advertises a security system.

However, in addition, a study con-ducted at Rutgers University found fewer burglaries in neighborhoods with more security system signs. This suggests intruders don’t just cherry pick the homes that don’t advertise an alarm system. Rather, when they see a lot of warning signs in one place, they tend to avoid the whole area.
