New City Arts Seeks Community Support for $37,000 Indiegogo Campaign

New City Arts Initiative (est. 2009) is a collaborative community that sup-ports artists and facilitates cultural participation in Charlottesville. Over the last five years, through core pro-grams, New City Arts has exhibited the work of more than 150 local artists at its WVTF and Radio IQ Studio Gal-lery, granted more than $6,000 to local artists through Charlottesville SOUP grants, and provided studio space for nine local artists at The Haven.

New City Arts recently opened Wel-come Gallery at 114 3rd Street N.E.—a 1,400 square-foot downtown, store-front property with a brick exterior and modern interior. This new location houses New City Arts staff offices, a gallery with monthly exhibit openings and weekly open hours, a short-term

residency program for local artists, and a downtown event venue for small arts performances.

Since opening in September, Wel-come Gallery has exhibited two local artists (Dean Dass and Sarah Boyts Yo-der) and organized exhibits featuring Charlottesville artists, Charlottesville artist alumni, and Charlottesville cura-tors through July 2016. The New City Artist-in-Residence program welcomes two local artists as resident artists this year, Alyssa Pheobus Mumtaz (Octo-ber 2015–February 2016) and Tobiah Mundt (March 2016–July 2016).

In order to support these efforts, New City Arts launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise $37,000 to outfit this new space with equipment for public and community events; professional facilities for artists; necessary gallery, office, and studio furniture; increased storage; and improved accessibility. The campaign video, a list of the orga-nization’s needs for the new location, and an opportunity to contribute can

“Welcome Gallery and the New City Artist-in-Residence program are exciting opportunities to provide a much-needed, multi-function space for local artists and arts audiences, since many downtown Charlottesville art spaces that once supported local art-ists have closed in the last two years,” says Maureen Brondyke. “As a commu-nity-based initiative, New City Arts is seeking support through our Indiego-go campaign, so that we can provide artist services, host public events, and facilitate regular community outreach. We’ve already received overwhelming support during the first 15 days of the campaign. We’re reaching out to the broader Charlottesville community to help us meet our goal.”

Since the campaign’s launch, 106 supporters have donated a total of $13,365. Maureen Brondyke (executive director, New City Arts) dyed one-third of her hair the color of the Indiegogo logo (bright pink) after the communi-ty contributed one-third of the $37,000 in the first third of the campaign. New City Arts is seeking community support to help raise the remaining $23,635.

Generous community sponsors and talented artists have come alongside New City Arts to provide communi-ty-based rewards, such as an Albemarle Baking Company “New City Tart,” a Pie Party on Pi Day (3/15/2016), and a significant amount of art from local artists.

NCAI’s crowd funding campaign relies on a large number of gifts, not necessarily in large amounts, to achieve the organization’s funding goal. “New City Arts: Gallery, Office, and Studio Space” features rewards for contribu-tions ranging from $5 to $5,000 in gift amounts. For community members

interested in making a tax-deductible contribution to New City Arts, the amount of a donation that is deduct-ible as a charitable contribution for tax purposes is limited to the excess of any money contributed by the donor over the value of goods or services provided by a charity through Indiegogo.

JABA’s “MacGyver” to Retire After 21 Years

After 21 years of service, JABA’s Chief Financial Officer, Leonard Lohman, will be retiring at the end of the month.

“Leonard has been JABA’s “Mac-Gyver,” says Gordon Walker, who served as JABA’s CEO for 30 years before retir-ing in 2013. “I always marveled at his infinite resourcefulness to deal with: leaky roofs, broken HVAC and freezers, malfunctioning toilets and computers, just to name a few. Additionally he was the person I could count on, time after time, to help make very early morning decisions about weather closings and how best to vacate and attend to the residents of Mountainside Senior Liv-ing after the derecho shut us down.”

Of course, as JABA’s Chief Financial Officer, Lohman also saved Moun-tainside Senior Living in Crozet from bankruptcy and put it in the black, and implemented programs and proj-ects that have secured JABA’s financial future for years to come.

“Leonard’s banking background played a prominent role in our busi-ness pursuits, thus enabling JABA to be less dependent on the vagaries of gov-ernment funding,” says Walker, “and most importantly, being able to serve more people.”

Indeed, JABA is unique in that it’s not dependent on federal and state funding. Most aging agencies like JABA exist predominately on govern-ment funding, up to 80 or 90 percent, but because of the diversified funding streams Lohman implemented, JABA’s dependency on federal and state fund-ing is less than 30 percent.

Lohman was also instrumental in developing key partnerships to create accessible senior housing within es-tablished neighborhoods, including Park View, Woods Edge, Ryan School Apartments and Timberlake Place. He also helped expand JABA’s reach by col-laborating with local governments and other agencies to create intergenera-tional community centers in various jurisdictions.

“Leonard is the person who made JABA’s dream a reality,” says JABA’s cur-

rent CEO Marta Keene. “It is through his knowledge of financing, and his re-sourcefulness that JABA has been able to move forward with new programs and following our mission of helping all ages in the community.”

But Lohman wasn’t just good with numbers, says Walker. He also helped to create a culture of trust and cooper-ation at JABA.

“When I received his advice I knew he believed in what he was saying,” says Walker. “ It was not because he believed it was what I wanted to hear. By work-ing with Leonard I learned I didn’t have to have every answer but I did need to have the right people around me to make better decisions to assure desired outcomes.”

So, what’s next for Lohman? He and his wife plan to traverse the country in their RV.

Play the City Presents The Art of Hair

This fall, Play the City celebrates the creative vision of an underrepre-sented group of artists: hair stylists. Two events in November will show-case the work of stylists and barbers in Charlottesville, many of whom live and work in the Strategic Investment Area on Garrett Street.

On Friday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m., The Bridge PAI will host Go Natural, a workshop for natural hair. Nneka So-

bers will share her experience “going natural” as well as her recipes for hair and face mud masks. This exploration of afro-textured hair care provides a platform for local African-American women to share their own coil stories, and create DIY hair care products. The workshop will immerse participants in a vibrant natural hair community and provide them with the tools to start or continue their natural hair journeys. This event is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, November 14 at 8:00 p.m., The Bridge PAI will host Hair-STYLE, a runway exhibition featuring hairstyles big and small by local stylists and barbers. Precision cuts, natural hair, wigs, and high-art styles will be on the runway to showcase local styl-

ists’ creative talents. Hair profession-als interested in participating should contact Program Director, Serena Gru-ia ([email protected]) at The Bridge PAI by Friday, November 6 with a one- or two-paragraph statement about their approach to hair or history as a stylist. Stylists are also responsible for recruiting three models or clients to showcase their work.

The event is free and open to the public, and food and drink will be available for purchase on site. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the show be-gins at 8pm.

During all Art of Hair events, the Bridge PAI will display In Focus, an exhibit of photography by Keith Alan Sprouse documenting the work of Gar-rett Street’s hair stylists and barbers.

Beloved classics and buzzed about new re-leases. Entertainment, scholarship, stars – and social concern. We’re talking about the Vir-ginia Film Festival, the lavish annual groan-ing board of film and film talk presented in Charlottesville each fall by the University of Vir-

ginia. With more than 100 films and a roster of distinguished guests includ-ing Meg Ryan, Oliver Stone, and Larry Kramer, the 28th festival, Thursday, November 5 through Sunday, Novem-ber 8, will fascinate, provoke, engage and amuse.

In an age of little screens and short attention spans, what’s on offer here is a richer, slower, more focused experi-ence, with big names, big subjects, big screens, and big-time discussion. Un-der Director Jody Kielbasa’s leadership, the Festival has earned a reputation for bringing together critics, scholars and film industry professionals to reflect on history, culture, and the animating issues of the day.

This year’s fest also marks the much anticipated opening of Violet Crown Cinema, the luxurious 10-screen cine-plex with bar and restaurant in the old Regal Cinema space. “Charlottesville has no idea what they’re in store for once they get in those theaters,” Kiel-basa says. “It’s going to be beautiful,

with state of the art stadium seat-ing – very luxurious, very comfort-able. It’s going to be one of the great boons to this community, and a jewel in the crown of the Downtown Mall.”

Hank Just down the Mall from the Vio-

let Crown, at the grand and historic Paramount Theater, the Festival will celebrate Opening Night with a 7:00 p.m. showing of I Saw the Light, a biopic about country music legend Hank Wil-liams. British actor Tom Hiddleston portrays an American icon in what Kielbasa calls “a remarkable, tour de force performance. A lot of people are probably most familiar with his work in Thor and The Avengers, but here he is in a complete role reversal, taking on this country and western singer who is so well known, and actually singing in

a completely different dialect. As a for-mer actor, I always find it fascinating when you see an actor who completely shifts their focus in taking on roles.” UVA alumnus and Festival Advisory Board member Marc Abraham directed the film, and will be on hand to pres-ent it with Academy Award-winning ac-tress Cherry Jones, who plays Williams’ mother, and rising Hollywood star

Maddie Hasson, who plays his second wife and widow.

IthacaEvery bit as extraordinary as Hid-

dleston’s persona-shifting career leap is Meg Ryan’s move from dramatic actress to filmmaker, says VFF pro-grammer Wesley Harris. With Ithaca “she is, in a very organic way, pushing her approach to film, getting behind the lens to helm a very exciting, brand new production.” Based on Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Saroy-an’s 1943 novel The Human Comedy, Ryan’s directorial debut is a coming-of-age story about a 14-year-old bike mes-senger (Alex Neustaedter) who delivers messages of love, hope, pain and death. One message will change him forever.

Neustaedter, producer Janet Brenner, and actor Lois Robbins will be here to discuss the film, which also stars Sam Shepard, Hamish Linklater, Gabriel Basso, Jack Quaid, and Tom Hanks, 7:00 p.m., Friday November 6 at the Paramount.

blue-blooded curmudgeon on PBS’s Downton Abbey. The much-celebrated Smith brings to life a character from the other end of the social scale in the Festival’s Centerpiece film, The Lady in the Van, 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Novem-ber 7 at the Paramount. The true and poignant story of an eccentric home-less woman who parked her van in director Alan Bennett’s driveway and stayed for 15 years, Van is directed by longtime Bennett collaborator Nico-las Hytner, and co-stars Alex Jennings and Jim Broadbent. Showing alongside

Van is Charlottesville-born director Eric Hurt’s Elemental, an 11-minute feature on another unlikely but heart-ening friendship, this time between a 10-year-old wunderkind and the blind neighbor who advises him on matters of the heart.

Making History, Making a Difference

“Something we hang our hat on here, that distinguishes us from oth-er film festivals, is that being part of UVA we can bring in social activist and change agents,” Kielbasa says, citing such history making past guests as civ-il rights crusader Julian Bond and Wa-tergate reporters Woodward and Ber-nstein. “It’s what we do; it makes this festival special. This year, Larry Kramer is a perfect example of someone who at the height of the AIDS crisis really reached out and forced America to take notice of what was going.”

The award-winning playwright and founder of a pioneering AIDS treat-ment organization will be in UVA’s Newcomb Hall at 1:00 p.m. Sunday

November 8 for a documentary on his life, Larry Kramer in Love and Anger. Later that afternoon, at 5:30, the Fes-tival will welcome Kramer to historic Old Cabell Hall for a wide-ranging talk about his multi-faceted career.

Like Kramer, filmmaker Oliver Stone is known for probing painful is-sues and sparking uncomfortable but important conversations. Currently at work on a film about Edgar Snowden, Stone will be at the Paramount Sat-urday at 1:30 p.m. for a showing of

his landmark 1989 drama, Born on the Fourth of July, based on an autobi-ography by Vietnam War veteran and anti-war and veteran’s rights activist, Ron Kovic. Kielbasa lauds the film for its look not only at the war, but at “the treatment of veterans, and the prob-lems they encounter when they return. I think it’s been one of Tom Cruise’s best acting jobs as well.”

Historian Bob Toplin will interview Stone following the screening. “Oliver has been really fearless in his personal examination of our country’s history,” Kielbasa says. “He’s not afraid to show some of the warts. Right or wrong, he’s presented them for everyone to see and discuss and weigh in on, and I think that’s important. That’s one of the things the Virginia Film Festival has done over the years, is to provide that opportunity for people to talk about controversial subjects.”

The late Julian Bond is remem-bered with admiration and affection in Charlottesville, for both his coura-geous civil rights work and his tenure as a UVA professor of history. Bond took part in several Festivals, and will be honored Sunday at 3:45 p.m. in Newcomb Hall Theater with a screen-ing of Rosenwald, a tribute to Sears executive and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, whose Jewish faith in-

spired the construction of more than 5,300 schools in the Jim Crow South. Among those recalling Rosenwald in the film are Bond, Maya Angelou, Rita Dove, and Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson, himself a graduate of a Rosenwald school. Director Avi-va Kempner will discuss the film with Bond’s widow Pamela Horowitz and poet Rita Dove.

Leonard Maltin The Library of Congress’s audio-vi-

sual conservation center in Culpep-er houses a treasure trove of Ameri-can film, much of it, as Harris notes, “in the most amazing, most pristine, sometimes one of a kind” condition. To celebrate the Library’s archival ef-forts, critic and film historian Leonard Maltin has been invited to introduce two restored 35mm prints of his own choosing at UVA’s Culbreth Theatre. For Saturday at 3:30 p.m., Maltin has selected the 1941 film noir classic The Maltese Falcon, directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart.

On Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the Culbreth comes a rarer treat, the once

banned 1933 picture, Employees’ En-trance, directed by Roy Del Ruth and starring Warren William, Loretta Young, and Wallace Ford. “I was re-ally excited when Maltin pulled this one out of the list,” Harris says. “It’s a hugely politically incorrect, amazing-ly sexist and intriguing peek into the sorts of films that were made in Holly-wood in between the sound era and the infamous Hays Code.”

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday in UVA’s New-comb Hall Theater, Maltin will speak with legendary animator Bill Plympton after a screening of Cheatin’, his 2013 adult tale of love, infidelity, and a mag-ical soul-transporting device. At 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Culbreth, Maltin

will talk to director Maggie Greenwald following Songcatcher, her 2000, Acad-emy Award nominated drama about a musicologist finding friendship and romance in Appalachia.

Spotlight on Virginia “This year’s crop of films that were

either made in Virginia or have Virgin-ia roots are particularly impressive,” Harris says. “That speaks to the grow-ing base of talent and creativity in the Commonwealth. It’s an honor to be able to showcase their work each year.”

Joel Salatin’s innovative and wide-ly imitated Polyface Farms in the Shenandoah Valley is the subject of Polyfaces, the joyful documentary to be shown at 4:45 p.m. Saturday at Pied-mont Virginia Community College’s

Dickinson Center. As a “family owned, multi-generational, pasture-based, be-yond organic, local-market farm,” Poly-face Farms is in the business of “heal-ing the land, healing the food, healing the economy, and healing the culture.” A discussion with Salatin and the film-makers will follow.

Cameron Bruce Nelson’s resume includes a stint as a farm hand in a small Virginia town in 2008. The Dal-las native’s directorial debut is Some Beasts, a Southern Gothic horror film about a modern day Thoreau seeking solitude on a Blue Ridge Mountain farm. A neighbor’s sudden death and the discovery of a feral child force him to make peace with the lawless outside world. Nelson will lead a panel discus-

sion with ten actors and crewmembers after the screening, 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the Violet Crown.

Mercy StreetPart medical drama, part family saga,

the upcoming PBS mini-series Mercy Street was produced around Richmond and based on Civil War life in Alexan-dria. Featuring what Kielbasa terms a “breakout” performance by Charlottes-ville-area native Hannah James, the se-ries depicts the tension between North-ern and Southern loyalists through the fraught relationship of a New England abolitionist and a Confederate belle, both nurses at a Union hospital. Civil War expert Gary Gallagher, co-Execu-tive Producer Lisa Quijano Wolfinger, and cast members James, Norbert Leo Butz, Cherry Jones, and Tara Summers will preview an episode of Mercy Street at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Culbreth.

Family DayPBS is smart, but Pixar is fun. Moms

and Dads and the next generation of movie stars can see Pixar shorts and

the family classic Babe on this year’s Family Day, starting 10:00 a.m. Satur-day on UVA’s Betsy and John Casteen Arts Grounds. The Charlottesville Symphony will bring a Musical In-strument Petting Zoo, and the Young Filmmakers Academy will showcase the work of over 600 student filmmak-ers mentored by Light House Studio. University and community arts profes-sionals will lead interactive workshops on topics including “Make-up Effects,” “Speak Shakespeare Like a Pro!,” and “Music in Movies.” Workshops are free, but require advance registration. Park-ing is free in Culbreth Road Garage.

Son of SaulHungarian director László Nemes’

won the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his directorial debut, Son of Saul, about a Jewish man forced to work in a Nazi crematorium who discovers what he believes is the body of his own son, and determines against all odds to give his son a proper reli-gious burial. Starring Hungarian actor and poet Géza Röhrig, who converted to Hasidic Judaism after a visit to Aus-chwitz, the film is Hungary’s submis-sion for the upcoming Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and the Festival’s Closing Night film, 7:30 p.m., November 8 at the Culbreth. Praised for cinematography and sound work that brutally suggest the horrors on a con-centration camp, it’s being called a mas-terpiece of Holocaust drama.

Ranging across genres, styles, and subjects, the 28th annual Festival should abundantly fulfill its mission to educate, inspire and entertain. “We have, as always,” Kielbasa says, “fo-cused on creating a program that is as deep and broad as the interests and passions of our unique Virginia Film Festival audiences.” n

When Martha Hass and her husband moved to Charlottesville from Pennsylvania this past May, they thought

they’d have an easy time finding a new home. All they wanted was a place in their price range with a basement, a double garage to accommodate her woodworking hobby, and especially, a first-floor master bedroom. They are still looking.

“When homebuyers are looking ahead and thinking about ‘aging in place,’ they really want a first-floor master suite,” declares REALTOR® Sue Raupp of Montague Miller and Company, Realtors. While other fea-tures involving accessibility are also de-sirable, she says, a first-floor master can really seal the deal. You see, more and more people are thinking about stay-ing in their homes as long as possible and this figures into what’s attractive in a prospective home purchase.

“Houses with accessibility have a real marketing edge,” chimes in Linda Broadbent, a REALTOR® with Better Homes and Garden/Real Estate III. The public, she says, is seeking acces-sibility options, whether buying a new home or remodeling an existing dwell-ing. Accessibility, she notes, includes features such as zero-step entries, roll-in showers, and wider doorways. In multi-story residences there should be an elevator or chair lift.

Other more subtle features include shallow-depth cabinets that make it easier to retrieve articles and lever han-dles instead of knobs on doors, sinks, and faucets.

Such features may be necessary for people seeking to stay longer in their homes, and they are essential for per-sons of any age with disabilities. It’s estimated that almost 50 million Americans have some sort of mobil-ity challenge including older people, wounded war veterans, accident vic-

tims, and persons with chronic medi-cal challenges.

In fact, Virginia believes accessibility is so important it has established a tax credit of up to $5,000 in many cases of both new home construction and ret-rofitting. For more information, search the Internet for “Virginia livable homes tax credit.”

New constructionIncorporating accessibility features

is a no-brainer in new home construc-tion and it’s actually easier when incor-porated from the start. A special pro-gram for contractors helps them create what is known as an EasyLiving Home. This voluntary certification program encourages builders of single-family homes, duplexes, and triplexes to in-clude specific features in designing and building.

Typical features include easy passage into and inside the dwelling because of step-free access and interior passage doors at least 32 inches wide. The main floor should include the kitchen, an entertainment area, a bedroom, and at least one full bathroom with sufficient maneuvering space for a wheelchair or walker. Counters also can be designed with plumbing installed to leave knee room for a person using a wheelchair. The space can be used for storage un-less or until it is needed. Grab bars are also important.

“I would like to get over this impres-sion that grab bars are for old people.” Broadbent emphasizes. “I prefer to call them safety bars and they are a good thing for any age. Even a five-year-old might use one if he slips. It may sound strange but if I were building a home, I’d include these accessibility features right from the start.” Grab bars in showers and by commodes might also be a welcome feature for visitors to the home.

RemodelingBroadbent praises these EasyLiving

accessibility features in a new-build home, and they are also a good choice

when remodeling. It makes little differ-ence in the cost of a remodel, but can be a valuable factor increasing the mar-ketability of a property or the ability of residents to “age in place.”

Bathrooms are a main focus be-cause so many home accidents occur there. One important consideration is to have enough space to maneuver a wheelchair or walker. In some cases, simply hanging the door to open out-wards can provide the extra room.

The primary concern, of course, is stability and safety, so features like roll-in showers, non-slip floors in showers and tubs, good lighting, and sturdy grab bars are high on the list of any bathroom renovation.

Today’s grab bars come in designs that provide architectural interest as well as safety. Materials include teak wood that is waterproof, various metal-lic finishes, and even glow-in-the-dark acrylic. One interesting application has built-in LED lighting which creates an all-in-one night light/grab handle.

These days, many bathroom remod-els find people replacing those aging fiberglass all-in-one shower/tub combi-nations with no-step tiled showers. This means easier access for persons with temporary or permanent disabilities.

A sturdy built-in seat of tile or teak is another nice feature. In addition, technology has made some interesting

advances in user-friend-ly fixtures. A hand-held shower option is a worthwhile investment and there are single-han-dle mixers offering easi-er control over flow and temperature. For tech-nophiles, there are even touchscreen-operated showers.

Kitchens should have slip-resistant flooring, adequate open space, and good lighting. Safety and accessibility features might include front con-

trols on the cooktop so the user doesn’t have to reach over hot burners, a bot-tom freezer on the refrigerator, pull-out shelves to provide lower counter space to work on, and fully extendable drawers for good access.

Whether people are considering new construction or remodeling, it always makes good financial sense to incorpo-rate accessibility features. n

When Marilyn Pribus and her husband moved from California eight years ago, they had an eye to the future and chose a single-story home. There were already grab bars in the showers and any future remodel-ing will include the elimination of barriers.

About the VFH Residential Fellowship Program:

Created in 1986, the VFH Residen-tial Fellowship Program supports hu-manities scholars and writers whose work is intellectually stimulating, imaginative, and accessible to the pub-lic, promoting greater understanding of and access to the humanities. To date it is the only residential fellowship program among all fifty-five state hu-manities councils. Fellowship projects explore the humanities broadly, in-cluding history, literature, folklife, and historical and contemporary cultures. Fellows receive private office space in the VFH offices, located on a scenic property in Charlottesville, access to University of Virginia libraries and amenities, and the camaraderie and collective expertise of a cohort of other humanities scholars.

VFH Residential Fellowships are open to faculty members in the human-ities, independent scholars, and others working on projects in the human-ities. The annual proposal deadline is December 1. For more information, please visit http://virginiahumanities.org/fellowships n
