THE PROBLEMS FACED BY ENGLISH TEACHER IN TEACHING LISTENING
AT SMP NU BULULAWANG
ABSTRACT
Listening is one of English skills. In teaching listening, the teachers usually need
school facilities especially language laboratory. Language laboratory and media are
very important for listening teaching and learning process because those can support
the process and can make the students interested in listening learning process.
Teachers sometimes get difficulties if there is no language laboratory or other media
in the school. This study aimed to analyze the problems faced by English teachers in
teaching listening at SMP NU Bululawang and how to solve the problems.
The design which is used in this study is descriptive qualitative research to know
the problems faced by English teacher, and how the teacher solved the problems. The
writer used observation and interview to collect the data.
After analyzing the data, the writer found some problems in teaching listening.
The first is the problem in managing the students. The teacher could not manage the
students when the lesson began. The students did not focus on teacher’s explanation,
and they ignored the teacher in the teaching learning process. The second is the
problem of inappropriate method. The method used by the teacher was inappropriate
for listening class. The activities done by the teacher did not focus on listening skill.
The teacher combined the methods commonly used in reading and writing class, in
which those produced products such as sentences, paragraphs, and even an essay. The
last, lack of school facility. Without being supported by school facility, the teacher
was difficult to deliver the material to the students and the students did not focus on
teacher’s explanation. The teacher has some ways to solve the problems: 1)
persuading the students to be consistent in the rule of learning process and
comprehension, 2) having the students to prepare theirselves to study in any
condition, 3) inviting the students to play game in the teaching learning process of
listening, 4) teaching how to pronounce the word or sentence correctly, 5) and using
the gratify method in order to make the students feel comfort. From the five solution
he did, there was only one solution which worked. It was training on how to
pronounce the word or sentence correctly. It made students more active in teaching
and learning activity.
Key words: problems, teaching listening, language laboratory.
