Lucinka: What is the story of Storytellers’ Club?Sarah: The story is… a few years ago a bunch of comedians and myself decided to tell stories around a campfire. Comedians, by their very nature, have great stories to tell, yet they’re constrained by the tight format comedy clubs. You have to do the ‘jokey jokes’ every ten seconds. Some comedy clubs even take a show report at the end of the night where they literally have a tally of how many applause breaks you had, how many laughs per minute and whether they thought you were trying out new material that went a bit wishy-washy; they want you to do gold at all times. Storytellers’ Club meets to take our time and loosen those pressures.Lucinka: How do you set up that vibe in your show?Sarah: Our centrepiece is a faux 1980s log fireplace, and enchanting mood-

setter. Then there’s low lighting, warm colours, hushed tones, and the right sorts of people as performers and audience. Clever, interesting comedians perform at Storytellers’ Club. Often they’re comedians you wouldn’t expect; we had Tim Vine – renowned of course for his one-liners – tell a long-form story about working in an African call centre, for example, which was genius. Lucinka: While not about the ‘laugh report’, are the stories often funny?Sarah: They certainly can be! So many performers at Storytellers’ Club get standing ovations, because audiences are so satisfied with the end result of their narrative journey.Lucinka: Then you are resident host along with James Dowdeswell?Sarah: James acts as our feature artist, telling the first story every night, opening proceedings and setting the all-important tone. Lives are lived and loved on Facebook walls. Gone are the days of letters sealed with a kiss; the Facebook poke, for better or for worse, is here to stay. Phillipa and Will are Now in a Relationship charts just that, in a 20th Century romance told wall-to-wall.

“I wish I could have made this stuff up” says writer Jonathon Brittain, but an alarming amount of the show is based on true, published messages.

As recent events have shown, events broadcast on social media can quickly spiral out of control. Based on a true story, Body of Water shows what can happen when a party, originally intended as political protest, gets hijacked by tweeters and over-run with sex, drugs and the damaging effects of 140 characters.

Body of Water explores issues of human interaction now facing the ‘Facebook generation’.
