Ms. Karen Shankman has been a counselor at Maine East for the last 19 years. In these years, she has found that the students of Maine East have taught her about the different aspects of youth and also about their different lifestyles. She admires the students for be-ing loyal friends and will miss the sense of community created by the students when she leaves.

Faculty Retirees

Ms. Shankman

Mr. John Tyler has been a guidance counselor for the last thirty-seven years, thirty of which have been here at Maine East. In those decades, Mr. Tyler finds that his students have taught him that humor is healing and that you should pay attention to the balance in your life. “I will miss working with all levels of adolescents,” said Mr. Tyler. “All of my working life, which now totals 43 years, it has been a gratifying privilege to work with adolescents. I still ‘feel’ like an adolescent from this working experience. It keeps one ‘young’.”

Mr. Tyler

Ms. Margaret Geiger has worked at Maine East for the last 35 years. Her favorite memory is all the talent that students have brought with them. She says that she enjoyed seeing all the plays and perforances that have taken place. “I’m going to miss the bonds I have with the teachers and the in-teractions with the students,” she said.

Ms. GeigerMr. Wayne Connell has been

sending kids off to the streets for over 20 years and has taught a total of 45. He has been working at Maine East for 24 years, and Maine West for 21 years. “I have mixed emotions about it; both good and apprehensive,” he said. He will miss the staff and students. He feels that the people here have always treated him very well. His plans after retiring are to volunteer at a senior citizen’s home in Arlington Heights teaching Woodshop class. He plans on staying active and likes to do things that he love.

Mr. Connell

Mr. Isaac Browne has been working at Maine East for 21 years. He is going to miss the diversity of the students, the languages and cul-tures represented by the students at Maine East. Mr. Browne believes that the students are a clean slate on which the adults write every day.

Ms. Marianne Protess has worked in District 207 for the last 23 years, 18 at East. “There have been so many highlights, such as watching students with challenges perform in plays, seeing the fresh-men with such high hopes on their first day of school, and graduation every year,” she said. “In terms of my students, I have not thrown out a single thank-you note I have re-ceived.”

Ms. Protess Mr. Browne

After working in three dif-ferent school systems, Mr. Jona-than Hunter believes that Maine East has the nicest students and that is what he’s going to miss the most. He has been working here to twelve years and in those twelve years, students have taught him to relax more and how to explore the more creative side of his personal-ity.

Mr. Hunter

Mr. Tom Wunderlich has been teaching for 34 years. Ac-cording to him, the excitement of a film production and the thrill of being on the radio always makes walking in the door to work a pleasure. Leaving will be rough for there will be a lot to miss. “I consider it a privilege to have this job and I don’t take it lightly ev-ery day I come in.” As for the fu-ture of the broadcasting program, Mr. Wunderlich has no doubt that that it will flourish.

Mr. Wunderlich

Ms. Kuta

Ms. Kathy Kuta has taught English, Reading, and Staff Development for twenty-five years at Maine East. What she’s going to miss the most about District 207, and especially Maine East, are the students and staff. She has found it rewarding to teach and watch students grow intellectu-ally, emotionally, and physically during their four years of high school. When she thinks about how many lives she’s touched over the years, it makes her smile. After Maine Township, Ms. Kuta plans to continue be-ing a reading, writing, and literacy coach and looks forward to having more time for travel and relaxation.

Ms. Komo

Ms. Cheryl Komo began her career at Maine East twenty years ago as the department secretary for Special Education. During her tenure, she also worked with Drivers Education, Mathematics, Social Science, and Science, and eventually became an all-school administrative support specialist. Ms. Komo and her husband plan to spend their retirement in sunny Arizona, but will also come back to the Chicago area to visit their children and grandchild.

Additional retirees include Ms. Connee Bletzinger, Mr. Al Brower, and Mr. Bill Karda

On behalf of The Pioneer staff and Maine East students and faculty, congratulations, retirees!

Best of luck to you all!

Ms. Benz

For thirty-two years, Ms. Benz has taught in the Maine district: thirty years and Maine East and then two years at Maine South. Before teach-ing at Maine Township, two years were spent teaching in Wisconsin. The wonderful students at Maine are what made her days special; the teaching/learning interaction will be what she will miss the most. Since her heart is in teaching, she would love to continue working with students at some level. Retirement will allow for many new possibilities and adventures, and she is always looking forward to a new adventure.

Ms. Soil

Ms. Ruth Soil has been working at Maine East for 18 and will miss the students and their different cultures, religions, and languages. She loves learning about them and believes that it is important to know one’s culture and history. The students have also taught her patience and have showed her that she can overcome some very difficult circumstances and do it with good spirits, too!

Ms. Visee

Ms. Emma Visee has devoted her hard work and teaching skills to Maine East for thirty-five years. Leaving her students behind is one thing she will miss, especially the opportunity to “build relationships with stu-dents and have their passion and energy around me.” Specific plans for retirement are not formed, yet, but she believes that more teaching may be in her future.

Faculty Retirees

With fourteen years of com-mitment in the teaching field. Ms. Isoe has reached the retirement point. She will most miss her be-loved students. “I love working and helping the students as they grow and mature throughout high school.” During her time off, she plans to head for a nice, warm, and sunny state to relax, enjoy garden-ing, and stay in shape with yoga.

Ms. Isoe Ms. Andersen

Mr. Salefski has been arriv-ing at school before most of the rest of the faculty at Maine East for forty years. Mr. Salefski has loved teaching and sponsoring class council, through which he has helped plan many proms. He is convinced that if his students heard at least part of what he said, they have learned. Many former stu-dents have told him that they carry his lessons throughout their lives. With so many interests, Salefski will easily be able to keep himself busy during retirement.

Ms. Merrilee Andersen began her teaching career at Maine East almost forty one years ago. She took some time off to raise a family and then spent nine years at Maine West before finishing her career back where she started it, at East. She has learned that if she treats students with respect, she gets it back and when she smiles, she gets a smile back. That is why she is going to miss the students and LRC staff the most.
