“At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.” (Matt. 4:1) Last week, I invited you to register onto FORMED and to travel Lent together in a deepening of our appreciation of the Word of God. This was in response to an invitation that was given to us by Bishop Barres in his Lenten Letter to the people of our diocese. Bishop Barres wrote,“. . .I invite you during the Lenten Season 2019 and beyond, to discover or rediscover the power of the Word of God by reading, meditating, praying, contemplating and living the inspired Sacred Scriptures.” Again, registration is easy. 1) Visit our FORMED community website at https://stjamesrcchurch.formed.org. 2) Click on the “Register Now” icon and create an account with your email and password of your choice. 3) Once registered, you will have 24/7 access to the website along with the phone application. In order to focus and prepare for the upcoming Sunday Mass, I would suggest that you click on the video “Opening the Word” which is featured on the top banner. It offers a six-minute reflection on the coming Sunday readings. In this week’s video segment of “Opening the Word,” the speaker, Mary Healy spoke about the “Temptations of Jesus in the Desert.” What I found of particular interest was when she spoke about the Scripture passage just prior to this week’s, which was the Baptism of Jesus. God clearly proclaims, “This is my Son in whom I am well pleased.” Satan tries to dissuade and distract Jesus through the first temptation, “If you are the Son of God, turn these stones into loaves of bread.” Jesus will not be moved by this temptation. He knows who he is and what he has come into the world to accomplish. Through Baptism we have become the adopted sons and daughters of God and sharers in the mission and ministry of Jesus. So, during the coming week remember, “Who you are and to whom you belong through Baptism.” In preparation for next week please watch the next segment of “Opening the Word” on FORMED. It will help you to prepare more fully for next weekend’s readings at Mass.

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR WHAT’S

“FORMED” ALL ABOUT? FORMED is a website, which is free to all parishioners of St. James. FORMED offers a host of materials of interest to Catholics including: movies, ebooks, Scripture study, sacramental programs and programs for spiritual growth and development and much more. Faith Formation

Have you ever thought of Lent as a yearly second chance? Each year the Church gives us six weeks to take a long, loving look at our lives to see if our values and priorities are in line with God’s desires for us. Since most of us find that we’ve wandered from God’s path, Lent becomes that second chance, or do-over, to “return to God with our whole heart.” Over the next 6 weeks I will offer different ways we can try to bring us into that 2nd Chance

One Lenten practice we can try is Breakfast. It seemed as though most of us are struggling to find time to eat dinner as a family. What if we were unable to hold the dinner hour sacred due to work schedules and after school activities, why not instead hold the breakfast hour sacred. Get up each morning during Lent just a little earlier so that you can have breakfast as a family, actually sit together, pray the meal prayer and begin each day on a happy note. Lenten habits could carry far off into the future with your family. The impact could be dramatic, in that each day was started with a prayer and positive attitudes. Breakfast can become a favorite ritual of the day.

We are looking

for new junior

lectors, if you

proclaim the Word at Mass,

Office for more information.

LENTEN GRACE BEFORE AND AFTER MEALS

GRACE BEFORE MEALS:

Loving Father, during this sacred season of penance we thank you for your many gifts, es-

pecially for our trials and sufferings.

The Cross of your Son reveals the depth of your love for us. As we come to-

gether to share this meal, bless us with that love. Purify the grace we pray so

that we may see how everything is a grace.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

GRACE AFTER MEALS:

Father of Love,

the nourishment of this meal fills us with new strength. May we use that

strength to spread the love of Christ

to the poor and those in need, and to remain always grateful to your Son

who laid down his life for us,

for Jesus is our Lord, now and forever.

Amen.

FOR THOSE SERVING IN THE ARMED FORCES Lord of Hosts, we commend to Your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with Your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils that beset them; and grant them Your abiding presence wherever they may be. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Temptation is a part of our lives. Even Jesus

wrestled with temptation. Our faith tells us that

we are meant to live our lives in service of God's

kingdom. Yet, we often find ourselves pursuing

our own desires rather than God's. The Gospel

clearly tells us that true power is found in the

embrace of virtue - living lives of non-violence,

mercy, and forgiveness. Yet, we still are not

convinced and seek things that will hurt us and

retaliate against those who harm us. When

Jesus faced temptation, he found security in

who he was, which firmly rooted him in his

mission and gave him the determination to trust

in God. We, too, must learn to find security in

our identity as a son or daughter of God, to live

out our mission rooted in that truth, and to be

confident in God's abiding presence.
