NEW PARISHIONERS:

Welcome! We encourage all new families who

move into St. Catharine - St. Margaret Parish

to call the rectory to register in the parish.

2 513 St. Catharine—St. Margaret Parish Family

Dear Parishioners…

The last two Saturdays were two of the

glorious Saturdays of the year for us

here at St. Catharine-St. Margaret’s,

when our precious second graders made

their first communion.

For us Catholics, first communion is a significant and

important milestone on the road to becoming full

participating members of the Body of Christ. It is also

a milestone on the road to becoming a caring,

compassionate, kind and helpful human being.

An article in the New York Times makes the

surprising observation that parents are more

concerned about their children becoming

compassionate and kind than they are about being

successful. When people in 50 countries around the

world were asked to report their guiding principles in

life, the value that mattered most was not

achievement, but caring.

Genetic studies of twins suggest that anywhere from a

quarter to a half of our propensity to be giving and

caring is inherited. That means that a significant part

is learned from the environment we live and grow up

in, and from learning. The article makes the

interesting observation that when it comes to that

learning process in promoting moral behavior, and the

development of a caring character “nouns work better

than verbs.” It is more effective to encourage little

children to “be a helper” rather than inviting them “to

help.” Cheating was cut in half when instead of,

“Please don’t cheat”, children were asked to “Please

don’t be a cheater.”

Encouraging and praising children to be generous and

kind appears to matter most around the age of 8. We

know, of course, that this is approximately the age

that our children make their First Communion. It is

also the age when we invite them to make their first

confession.

After 40 years of hearing first confessions, and

observing children make their first communion, I

know that children at this age, for the most part, have

a very clear and unambiguous sense of what is right

and wrong. How we view and reinforce this sense of

right and wrong is very critical piece in the

development of a caring and compassionate person.

In the confessional, every priest deals with two

different emotions. Every parent and teacher

encounters them also. These are “Guilt” and

“Shame.” These are not interchangeable emotions;

they are distinctly different.

Shame is a feeling that I am a bad person; guilt is a

negative judgment about an action or behavior, which

can be repaired by good behavior.

If we want our children to care about others, and be

compassionate people, we need to teach them guilt

rather than shame when they misbehave. Frequently,

shame follows when parents or teachers express anger,

withdraw their love and attention, try to assert their

power through threats of punishment; then children

may begin to conclude that they are bad people, and

we know that this is a recipe for trouble, especially

when they enter adolescence.

Disappointment is the best and most effective response

to unwanted behavior. Disappointment, when it is

expressed honestly, delivers a powerful two pronged

message. First, it communicates that the behavior was

wrong, and secondly, it implies that the parent has

high standards for the child that can be accomplished

by behaving in a different way. When the child

incorporates this message, we see the beginning of a

sense of moral identity, and progress on the journey of

becoming a helpful, caring, respectful and loving

person.

And that is our prayer and our hope for each of the

children from our parish who made their First

Communion this year.

St. Catharine Music Program

Upcoming Concerts!

Sunday, June 16th at 3PM

Watch bulletin for more details!!!

"Meet & Greet"

TODAY, May12th

At 12:30 pm in

Francis Duffy Hall, St. Margaret Church.

All are invited for delicious refreshments.

Honoring Deacon Ed's Anniversary Date.

They’re a Best Kept Secret:

Who: The Caritas Chamber Chorale is a special singing group of 22 accomplished voices who, under the direction of Barbara Sanderman, performs a series of beautiful bene-fit concerts of sacred music at select parishes in the Spring and Fall each year.

What: Caritas will be performing for us it’s new & special concert entitled “ Grace Abides.” The Chorale sings a cappella.

Where: St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake

When: Sunday afternoon, May 19th at 3:00PM

Why: This season’s program is designed to open for us a pathway to grace. It’s framework is the luminous Palestrina Missa Brevis, with each movement followed by a contem-porary choral piece.

Indeed, a unique program designed and performed for your enjoyment but also for the benefit of the Adorno Fathers’ Mission & school in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. The school educates children 3 to 11, who likely otherwise would not have access to education. Your free-will offering goes entirely to this charity of theirs.

How: Caritas Director Barbara Sanderman is the ‘mover & shaker’ behind the Chorale group. She’s been doing this since 2005. The singers are accomplished, ‘professional-grade’ performers, attracted to Caritas by its high quality performance, encouraged by Sanderman’s artistry as both musician and conductor. Sharing the conducting at this con-cert will be Dr. Mark A. Boyle, Director of Choral & Vocal Activities at Seton Hill University, PA.
