On April 21 I had the first meeting of the St. Catharine
School Advisory Board. As one who worked for 25
years as a school psychologist in the public setting, I
have to confess to feeling a little overwhelmed and
intimidated by array of talent and administrative skills
around the Rectory table. The group included
superintendents with an array of administrative
experience, retired principals, administrators, teachers
and curriculum experts with a tremendous array of
experience. (Cf opposite for the list of board
members).
I could not have been more impressed by the tangible
love and respect for our school that I heard from the
group, all of whom have a connection with our school.
There was a strong sense in the room that this group of
professional experts are united in their enthusiasm and
excitement to help chart the course for St. Catharine
School on its journey towards excellence.
In this time of transition for the school, it is reassuring
to know that the new administration of the school will
have the support and backing and guidance of
uniquely experienced and knowledgeable team of
experts who have a deep love and respect for our
school.
This week you will notice that we have included on
Page 6 a list of all the volunteer ministries in the
parish. On the reverse side of the page is the monthly
calendar of events in the parish. You might want to
remove this page and keep it on your refrigerator, or
somewhere you can consult it as you need. It is the
hope of all the organizations and ministries, that
providing you with ministries, contact persons and
phone numbers, more parishioners may call and
volunteer to become involved. These organizations are
the lifeline and heart of the parish, and they would love
to include you as part of what they do.
We thank Becki Reidel and the members of the
Pastoral Council for producing this list and making it
available to the parish.

St. Catharine School Students Travel Back in Time
Students Participate in Ellis Island Day to Learn about Immigration
St. Catharine School students traveled back in time to experience the journey their ancestors made to America many
years ago. The students and faculty, dressed in period clothing, were instantly transported to the early 1900s as soon as
they arrived at school—they were greeted by a classic car on the front lawn of the school! (Courtesy of Brian Riccio of
Brian’s Auto Center in Manasquan.)
The school gym was transformed into Ellis Island in the early 1900s. The students dressed as their ancestors,
presented passports as they entered Ellis Island, were seated with other “immigrants" from their native country
and enjoyed a musical play, Ellis Island: Gateway to America, performed by the Pushcart Players.
Activities were scheduled throughout the day to simulate life in 1916 as immigrants came to America. “Our intention
was for the students to participate in a collaborative day of learning, to connect to their heritage and to share their
experiences,” said Dr. Marilyn Castellano school principal. Students completed a family tree and presented their
family history to their class. They shared ethnic foods with their classmates and heard from guest speakers who shared
their experiences in coming to the United States.
“The day was better than I imagined,” said Karen Massamillo, art teacher and mastermind behind Ellis Island Day.
“The students embraced the opportunity to step back in time and experience their own family history as well as the
collective history of the immigrants who built our great nation. It was truly inspiring.”
It was a fun day for the students and one they will always remember when they look back at their days at SCS. It was a
great example of what makes SCS so special!

In grateful Memory
Ruth Rempe St. Catharine-St. Margaret parish gratefully acknowledges a sizeable bequest from the estate of Ruth Rempe, who died last Summer. Ruth was a member of the parish and attended Mass here regularly for 20 years. She had a great love for St. Catharine Church and was involved in the restoration of the church when Msgr. Luebking was pastor. Before her death, she stipulated that a large part of her estate be dedicated to the Restoration Fund of St. Catharine Church. The parish also acknowledges her best friend and trustee of her will, Maureen H. Hauck, who is dedicated to honoring her memory and her wishes. To the long list of benefactors of St. Catharine church, starting with Martin Maloney and his family, we add the named of Ruth Rempe and recommend her to the grateful prayers of all who now and in the future love this magnificent church.
