NEW PARISHIONERS:

Dear Parishioners…

St. John says that when he came to the

tomb, “He saw and believed.” I’m not

sure what he believed. The initial faith

of the apostles was very embryonic and

fragile and ill defined. All they knew at that time

was that they were standing in the presence of

profound mystery. It was only as the days went by

that the full significance and meaning of the events

began to take shape in their minds.

St. Peter tells us in the first reading that “it was God

who raised Jesus up.” And in the other reading

from St. Paul to the Colossians, he says that we too

“have been raised up in company with Christ,”

“Therefore,” he says “Be intent on things above

rather than things of earth.” It is those things

above that we are focused on during the Easter

season. We are saying that Easter proclaims the

permanence of life’s higher values; that the

resurrection of Christ from the dead guarantees that

the best will never be lost. Ralph Waldo Emerson

said it like this “What is excellent, as God lives, is

permanent”.

That, of course is an assurance that we always need, but

need very acutely today. The scandals and the abuses in

our church have created a sense of crisis, uncertainty and

insecurity in the minds of many good and loyal people. I

find a certain reassurance when I consider, that way back

on that very first Easter Sunday, the first disciples also

faced a feeling of crisis and uncertainty. They had put

their trust in Christ in the midst of a very unstable world

around them. Then came Calvary, and it seemed that

every thing came crashing down around them and they

found themselves in a state of crisis, and with a sense that

this was something that they would never recover from.

They had invested their trust and their lives in a cause,

and in a man, only to see it all go up in smoke on the hill

of Calvary. But in the middle of the darkness and the

despair, God raised him up and reaffirmed also at the

same time, that the ideals and the things that He stood for

are permanent.

So while we tend to think of Easter as a time when

we affirm our belief in life after death, it is more than

a message about immortality. Easter is also a

proclamation that the best things will never be lost.

And human history bears witness to that.

Monsignor Cullen

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL NEEDS HELP

The 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is experiencing a

very challenging year thus far. Contributions are down

20% across the Diocese. The Appeal is the source of

support for all our diocesan works and ministries.

Please take a moment to consider how you can help if

you have not done so already. Your participation is

essential if we want to continue our ministries as we

have done. Thank you for your consideration. May

the blessings of the Easter Season be yours.

May Crowning

Friday, May 10th

All members of the parish are invited to attend the St. Catharine-St. Margaret Annual May Crowning. It will take place on Friday, May 10th at 1:00 PM at the shrine of Mary in front of St. Catharine Church. Should the weather not cooperate, we will have the crowning in the school gym.

St. Catharine students who made their first

communion this year attend in their first communion

outfits, and our Blessed Mother is crowned by a

second grade student from St. Catharine School. We

dedicate each and everyone of them to the care and

protection of Mary and we pray that she will continue

to bless and protect them as they grow in her life and

in her likeness.

They’re a Best Kept Secret:

Who: The Caritas Chamber Chorale is a special singing group of 22 accomplished voices who, under the direction of Barbara Sanderman, performs a series of beautiful bene-fit concerts of sacred music at select parishes in the Spring and Fall each year.

What: Caritas will be performing for us it’s new & special concert entitled “ Grace Abides.” The Chorale sings a cappella.

Where: St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake

When: Sunday afternoon, May 19th at 3:00PM

Why: This season’s program is designed to open for us a pathway to grace. It’s framework is the luminous Palestrina Missa Brevis, with each movement followed by a contem-porary choral piece.

Indeed, a unique program designed and performed for your enjoyment but also for the benefit of the Adorno Fathers’ Mission & school in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. The school educates children 3 to 11, who likely otherwise would not have access to education. Your free-will offering goes entirely to this charity of theirs.

How: Caritas Director Barbara Sanderman is the ‘mover & shaker’ behind the Chorale group. She’s been doing this since 2005. The singers are accomplished, ‘professional-grade’ performers, attracted to Caritas by its high quality performance, encouraged by Sanderman’s artistry as both musician and conductor. Sharing the conducting at this con-cert will be Dr. Mark A. Boyle, Director of Choral & Vocal Activities at Seton Hill University, PA.
