The Parish Clerk.

For the origins of the Parish Clerk Branch see the Suffolk Weavers.

Early in the seventeenth century the job of Parish Clerk was of no mean occupation, in fact this work waspossibly the most important of all Parish projects. In those days before the local authorities (as we now know them)came into being, it was the church that undertook the work necessary for the well being of the inhabitants of the Parishconcerned. Firstly, there was the Lord of the Manor (the Squire) who inherited the Parish estate (mostly referred to asthe Hall Estate) from his forebears, which in a number of cases was handed down from the Manorial Estates.

He was 'Lord' accountable only to the King; under him were his Lieutenant, the Incumbent (Rector or Vicar)with his faithful servants the Churchwardens, the Parish Clerk, and possibly two Sidesmen. This small body had toattend to the needs of the Parishioners, spiritually and bodily, including the levying of rates and the sustenance ofpaupers. Practically the whole Parish was owned and directed by the Lord of the Manor, whose forebears providedadequate church space, which was expected to be used. The Church was a central establishment for the Parish and thepeople's existence was tied to this establishment. A large section of the inhabitants were employed by the Lord of theManor and being so employed were subject to the discipline of their master, and others with some independence such asFarmers, Shopkeepers, etc., lived in property owned by the Lord, to whom obedience was desirable. William was theeldest son of Phillip 1669 and Mary (nee Below), one of a family of nine children.

This branch of the family continues to the present day, but also splits into sub branches, which are covered in subsequent sections, in this document.

The 10 th Generation.

Phillip 1669 (438) married Mary Below (439) at St. Andrew’s Church, Bedingham, Norfolk, on the 3rd October 1695 and they had the following family:-

Elizabeth (440) b 30th January 1696William (441) b 11th December 1697Mary (442) b 9th June 1699John (443) b 8th March 1701Phillip (444) b 6th June 1704James (445) b 27th December 1706Mary (446) b 30th January 1707Grace (447) b 30th October 1708Elizabeth (448) b 1710

All born at Bedingham, Norfolk.

This was the world of William Fairhead (1697) who became Parish Clerk of Bedingham at a very young age in1720. In those days the choice for this post was limited to the few fortunate individuals with the necessary educationalqualifications and William's parents, Phillip and Mary, equipped him for this task.

The wardens were possibly very capable in deciding who should pay and who should receive, but the matterof keeping the books was a job more suited to the young Fairhead.

Although there was a large family born, a number died very young. It appears that in adulthood theaforementioned William had possibly no more than one brother and two or three sisters.

The 11 th Generation. Elizabeth 1696 (440) died in infancy.

William 1697 (441) undertook his job with great zeal and accomplishment, mostly known as 'Will' Fairhead, hisservices were perpetually being sought from one end of the Parish to the other. He grew to become a much lovedservant, respected and held in high esteem by all, and the appreciation he received for his work gave him rewardingsatisfaction. Elizabeth Rix (449) became his bride, being married, at St. Andrew’s Church, Bedingham, on the 2nd June1719, shortly before his being appointed Parish Clerk, and the following family resulted :-

James (450) b April 1721Sarah (451) b November 1722William (452) b April 1725 Elizabeth (453) b November 1727Samuel (454) b 1730Mary (455) b 12th December 1733

He continued to give this splendid service to his Parish for nearly 60 years until he was over 80 years of age, surely a record for service to one community. He died, the church register states, "on the 29th May 1785 at the age of 87years, 5 months and 18 days, an honest, industrious, inoffensive man, a pauper", his whole life and all that he possessedgiven to the Church and the Parish. There could be some prejudice here, but Albert states that he felt that WilliamFairhead 'was possibly the greatest humanitarian this parish ever had'.

His wife, Elizabeth, died on the 31st March 1761, so William spent the last 20 years of his life without his companion.During this period his family, who had made their own way, were growing older and had little need, so that the Churchand the Parish became richer.

Mary 1699 (442) died in infancy.

John 1701 (443) married Abigail ? (456) and farmed at Woodton, Norfolk, they had the following family :-

William (457) b 1726 at WoodtonJohn (3480) bap 4th September 1726 at WoodtonRichard (7108) bap 30th July 1732 at WoodtonMary (7201) bap April 1734 at WoodtonDeborah (7281) bap 9th May 1736 at WoodtonAbigail (7564) bap 9th April 1738 at WoodtonElizabeth (7668) bap 26th April 1740 at WoodtonSusanna (7669) bap 13th Jun 1742 at WoodtonJane (7996) bap 6th May 1744 at WoodtonJames (8550) bap 5th November 1746 at WoodtonMary (8562) bap 7th May 1749 at Woodton

John lived to the age of 76 years, and died in 1777 at Woodton, Norfolk.

Phillip 1704 (444) married Sarah Coleman (3209) of Carlton Colville at Barsham, Suffolk on the 2nd March 1726.

James 1706 (445) No trace, he probably also died at an early age.

Mary 1707 (446) married Thomas Betts (3210) of Kirbling on the 9th October 1753 at Barsham, Suffolk.

Grace 1708 (447) No record.

Elizabeth 1710 (448) married John Whitwood (458), just after the baptism of their son, on the 30th June 1733 at St. Mary’s Church, Hedenham in Norfolk, they had one son :-

John (Whitwood) (939) bapt. 28th June 1733 at St. Peter's, Mundham, Norfolk

Of the nine children at least five died in infancy, note the two Williams and two Samuel's. It was common inthose days to re-use a name when a child died, in an attempt to replace a lost named baby.

William undertook an unusual occupation for a Fairhead, that of a Ratcatcher under which heading all typesof vermin were dealt with, and in those days before poison was used this was a necessary and skilled occupation.

His wife, Frances, died in 1772 and William went to live at Mundham with his son John who had recentlytaken over a farm there. At Mundham on the 12th December 1776, William, at the age of 51, married Ann Hall (482), awidow and this union produced three children thus :-

Anne (483) bap 3rd August 1777Phoebe (484) bap 24th October 1779Ambrose (485) bap 12th May 1782

All at St. Peter's, Mundham.

The church record at St. Peter’s Church, Mundham, states "that Ann had taken her solemn oath that she hadnot heard of her late husband for a space of 16 years". Which was witnessed by Samuel Bowles the Clerk of Mundham, and that they were by Banns, they both made their mark X in the presence of Richard Raynor and Samuel Bowles. TheCurate is also mentioned as being one William Money.

"James Fairhead, aged 18 pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with having on the 23rd of Julylast, at Saxlingham, stolen a coat, the property of Elizabeth Fuller. 10 days imprisonment with hard labour."

In 1850 he was in court again, and on the 20 th March he was on trial before Justices of the Peace HenryDover, Isaac Jermy, Samuel Bignold and Robert Gilbert. The Hales Branch.Albert’s original book “The Parish Clerk, Hales Branch” is set out below.

The Hales Branch of the Parish Clerk. 41

Printed 30/11/2017

This branch stems from the youngest son of William 1762 and Mary, (from p.16) who was :-

John 1808 (522) who married Elizabeth Chittleborough (696) (a possible sister to Sarah who married his brother Charles) onthe 12th November 1828 at Topcroft. John unlike many bridegrooms appended his signature to the contract, witnessed by hismother, Mary. Elizabeth was only 16 years of age, while John was 20. They had the following Family :-

Esther (697) b 24th March 1831

The Hales Branch of the Parish Clerk. 42

Printed 30/11/2017

Eliza Maria (5227) b 1833 bap 21st July 1833 at Hempnall.James (698) b 9th March 1834William (699) b 8th September 1839

The children were brought up in the Parish of Topcroft where John was a Ratcatcher, the same occupation as his greatuncle, William 1725. John died at Topcroft on the 29 th July 1875, having been widowed since Elizabeth died on the 14 th February1873, in the Loddon & Clavering District. At the time of the 1851 Census they were living in Loddon, although James was notregistered there at the time, there is, however, a James living with the Fuller family, who were neighbours, stated to be 18 years ofage, and born at Topcroft, working as an Ag Lab. It is quite probable that this is John’s son.

**************************************

The 15 th Generation.

Esther 1831 (697) took the unusual step of raising a family of three before entering matrimony, thus :-

Sarah Maria Sutton (700) b 1st October 1852 at TopcroftFrederick William (701) b 25th February 1854 at TopcroftJames Frederick (702) b 17th May 1856 at Heckingham

Esther is thought to have married at some point. She then married for a 2nd time to George Buck (6100) in the 3Q 1864, inthe Loddon & Clavering District, and had the following family :-

James (Buck) (6102) b 1861 at TopcroftMatilda Eliza (Buck) (6103) b 1864 at Thorpe, NorwichEsther (Buck) (6104) b 1867 at HeckinghamGeorge (Buck) (6105) b 1867 at HeckinghamObadiah (Buck) (6106) b 1869 at Heckingham

Esther died in 1902 at Kirby Kane, Norfolk.

Eliza Maria 1833 (5227) the next record of Eliza is the 1851 Census, where she is recorded as the House Servant ofHenry Cooper, a farmer at Upper Stoke, Humbleyard, Norfolk. She married John Moates Beckett (5226) (b 1834 Topcroft, bap20/09/1834, Topcroft) on the 20th September 1861 at Hempnall, Norfolk. Directly after the marriage they moved to Gallows HillFarm, Brailes in Warwickshire where they had the following family :-

Frederick William (Beckett) (5568) b 1862Alfred John (Beckett) (5569) b 1865Thomas Henry (Beckett) (5570) b 1867

John was the son of Thomas Moates (566) and Elizabeth Beckett (5567) (married at Topcroft in 1835). John and Elizaremained at Gallows Hill until 1895, when they moved to Sibford Ferris, Oxordshire. They both died in 1912 and were buried inthe next village, Sibford Gower. Elizabeth on the 15th February1912. It is possible John is a relative of Elizabeth Moats whomarried Jonathan 1840 of the Bricklayers. John must have taken his mother’s name as he was born before the wedding.

James 1834 (698) born at Topcroft, Norfolk working and living with Curtis Fuller as an Ag Lab. He married Patience Hall(6059) in the 1Q 1865, in the Wangford District. She was born abt 1834 at Ringsfield, Suffolk. Patience died in the 2Q 1900 also inthe Loddon & Clavering District.

William 1839 (699) died on the 5th December 1923 and was buried at St. Mary’s Church, Hedenham.

Sarah Maria Sutton 1852 (700) was registered at Somerset House as 'Sarah Maria Sutton Fairhead' which suggests thatthe name of her father could have been Sutton. She married John Andrew Turner (6101) in the 2Q 1872, in Beccles, Suffolk. Theyhad 8 children (6636), some of whom went to London, and the boys were all in the printing trade.

Frederick William 1854 (701) married Sarah Jane Neech (703) on the 10th June 1889 in Beccles, Suffolk. She was born in1862 in Beccles, Suffolk. A witness of the marriage contract was Frederick's mother, now stated to be Esther Buck. They had one son :-

Frederick William (705) b 6th May 1892

At this time it is understood that a shop was being kept by Sarah, the mother of Frederick William, at the Old MarketPlace in Beccles and that Frederick, the father, was still a Tanner by trade. Frederick died in the 2Q 1909, and Sarah Jane in 3Q1929, both at Great Yarmouth.

James Frederick 1856 (702) married Mary Ann (Ellen) Long (706) (b.1851, Hales, Norfolk) at the Parish Church of GreatYarmouth on the 4th May 1876. His age was given as 21, but according to his Birth Certificate he was 13 days short of his 20thbirthday. He was a Porter by trade. Mary Ann was 25 years of age, the daughter of a Farm Bailiff at Hales where it appears thatJames took up work as a Farm Labourer. He became a much-loved parishioner, taking a very active part in Chapel affairs and didmuch to bring about the New Methodist Church which bears his name on one of the foundation stones. James and Mary Ann, whowas often known as Ellen, had the following family :-

Ellen Elizabeth (707) b 1Q 1877 Frederick James (708) b 15th September 1878 HalesEdwin Sidney (712) b 3Q 1880 Maude Marie (713) b 2Q 1882 Loddon & Clavering DistrictAlbert Ernest (722) b 3Q 1883 Edith Mabel (714) b 2Q 1885 Leonard Harry (709) b 10th June 1887 Edward Ernest (511) b 1Q 1889

Clarissa 1814 (733) died at the age of four months in February 1815 at Ludham.

Clarissa 1816 (734) Albert states in his record - "like many Fairhead women, I suggest she inherited businessqualities and undertook shop keeping. She was doubtless a very independent individual, again a common characteristicfound in the female species of the family, but with all her independent and masculine qualities the female propensityarose", and she became the mother of two boys thus :-

William Harcourt (758) b 25th October 1837Walter Bathurst (759) b 1839 Ludham

She was a very remarkable woman and as the mother of these boys would normally be subject to muchgossip, particularly with such contacts as shop keeping would bring, but it appears that she went through life defying it

all. It would appear that both children were brought up outside their mothers care, William possibly by his father andWalter by his uncle William. At the time of the 1851 Census she was living with two of her brothers at Ludham Street,Tunstead, they were George stated to be a Carrier and James, a Wheelwright.

Why Clarissa did not marry will never be known, but perhaps it was this peculiar characteristic of theFairhead women that a number remain unmarried due to partly to an independent streak in their nature. She died at thegreat age of 91 years on the 19th November 1907, thus completing a long and successful business career, and was buriedat Ludham. A memorial stone marks her grave.

Although she has long passed from us the name of Clarissa Fairhead the shopkeeper still lives in thisBroadland village.

William James 1818 (735) became a Carrier and in later life took up work in Great Yarmouth. He marriedElizabeth Bates (6060) (b abt 1831 Hautbois, Norfolk) in the 2Q 1877, at Gt. Yarmouth.

Thomas Shiliot 1823 (737) records suggest that he lived in Great Yarmouth.

George Silver 1825 (738) married Elizabeth Wright (765) on the 3rd August 1851 at Ludham. It appears thatGeorge Silver was a blacksmith by trade, and also opened up a carriers business. Perhaps this was William James 1818who gave it up. During the 1851 census he was living with his sister Clarissa at the shop. This would have been beforehe married in August of that year. George and Elizabeth had three children :-

George (761) b 11th July 1852William Robert (762) b 15th April 1855Ellen (763) b 5th April 1857 all at Ludham

William Harcourt 1837 (758) regarding William the church register reads :-

"William Harcourt son of Clarissa, born 25th October 1837, baptised 29th December 1837".

Nothing more is known concerning this first son of Clarissa.

Walter Bathurst 1839 (759) In the case of Walter the second name was much used and as no entry can befound in the Register of Births at Somerset House in the name Fairhead, it is possible that both children were registeredas William Harcourt and Walter Bathurst, and it is very much in question whether William and his descendants becameFairheads or Harcourt's.

Walter as stated was brought up by his uncle William (Clarissa's brother). Again as in the case of WilliamHarcourt, Walter was mostly recorded as Walter Bathurst and may be seen in the census return of 1841. In the returnAlbert found the entry of Walter Bathurst, age 3, in the household of William and Ann. Also he found a second WalterBathurst, age 30, Vicar of Ludham. However, later he found a record of marriage between Walter Fairhead, CoachProprietor, father unknown, residing at Stalham, and Fulleretta Neslen (780) (of St. Martin of Palace, Norwich, daughterof George Neslen, Farmer, b abt 1836 Burgh Castle, Suffolk) on the 6th March 1873 at Norwich. Walter's age wasgiven as 35, while Fulleretta was 37. It would appear that Walter, while making his coach trips to Norwich, encounteredhis bride. In 1901 he was listed as an ‘Omnibus Driver’.

For some reason Walter did not share his mother's home and the small town of Stalham became his choice. The second name, Bathurst, is now dropped and does not appear to be used any more. Walter and Fulleretta brought 4children into this world thus :-
