Ash Wednesday, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. Our Lenten journey toward Easter begins with Ash Wednesday. We will mark that with the Ash Wednesday Mass, March 1 at 7:00 p.m. (Please note that there will be no morning Mass on March 1, so that the whole community can start this Lenten journey together.) Receiving the ashes is a sign that we want to be serious about the upcoming season of renewal and conversion. Share Lent Campaign – Development and Peace On Ash Wednesday, Development and Peace – Caritas Canada will launch its 50th annual Share Lent campaign, entitled Women at the Heart of Change. Since the Organization’s founding in 1967, money donated annually by Catholics during Share Lent provides essential support to the poorest populations of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Today, Development and Peace supports 173 partners and 194 projects in 46 countries around the world! You can make Share Lent a part of your family’s Lenten journey by using the Solidarity Calendar, which you can obtain in your parish next Sunday. This year, the Share Lent collection will take place on April 2nd, which is Solidarity Sunday. If you would like to lend a hand or find out more, please contact Esperanza Garrido at 819 685-0391.

Did you know that Development and Peace’s first Share Lent campaign took place in 1968 and raised $1.35 million, which was used to carry out projects in 32 countries? World Day of Prayer 2017 World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together on the first Friday of March each year to observe a common day of prayer. Through World Day of Prayer, we affirm our faith in Jesus Christ and engage with the whole world, are enriched by the faith experience of Christitans of other countries and cultures, share the burdens of other people by praying with them and for them,and use our own talents in the service of God’s world. Prayer and action are inseparable and both have immeasurable influence in the world. We will be joining our neighbors in celebrating World Day of Prayer at Christ Church 101 Symmes (Aylmer) Gatineau on Friday March 3at 6:30 p.m. Please join us!! Observing Lent with our parish community Lent is a time for penance and repentance, for almsgiving and prayer, for working to change attitudes. This should be reflected in what we do at home, at work, at school, and in our leisure. It is also good to support one another in these practices in our parish community. So here are a few ideas for you to consider: Prayer:

• Sunday Mass provides the basic orientation for Lent. Why not try to attend Mass every Sunday throughout Lent?

• Daily Mass is a good way to root our days in the love of the Lord, from which we are sent forth to love our neighbor. Weekday Masses are listed in the parish bulletin and posted on the Web site.

• On Friday evenings at 7:00 p.m. (starting March 10) we will have the Stations of the Cross in the church.

• On Wednesday mornings at 9:30 and Thursday evenings at 7:00, we will have a Lenten prayer and discussion group using Scriptural meditations by Fr. Richard Rohr.

Fasting: • During Lent, we could refrain from some food, from a drink, from a

party, from a form of entertainment as a gesture of solidarity with those who have no choice in these matters. You may want to take part in a hunger meal (a very simple dinner such as a soup, or rice and beans) every Friday evening at 6:00 in the basement of St. Mark’s, right before the Stations of the Cross. At that meal, we donate the amount we would have spent on dinner to Development and Peace, so that others might benefit from our fast.

Almsgiving • Almsgiving says that we care for others even to the point of

depriving ourselves from something. All are invited to join in the Development and Peace Share Lent collection.

Lenten Action Cards to help you on your Lenten journey Lent is just around the corner. It is a time for us to redirect ourselves to things that really matter: love of God and love of neighbour. We do this in Lent by being more intentional about prayer, fasting and almsgiving. To help families and individuals in their Lenten journey, we are providing “Lenten action cards” to parishioners. These are strips of paper on which is written a task which helps us keep these practices of Lent – actions such as “pray for people who are homeless and sleeping on the streets tonight” or

“fast from taking second helpings at meals”. These Lenten action cards will be provided at the entrances of the church on Ash Wednesday and the first Sunday of Lent. We invite you to pick up a package, cut out the cards, and place them in a jar or small box in a central location in the home. Invite each family member to draw out a paper and focus on its Lenten living suggestion that day or week. We hope that this will help your families on your Lenten journey.

Lenten prayer and discussion group at St. Mark’s: Wednesday mornings at 9:30 or Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm Lent is a time for being more intentional about prayer. To help sustain one another in prayer this Lent, you are invited to participate in a weekly prayer and discussion group, Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. (starting March 8) or Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. (starting March 2). Between our get-togethers, participants will be encouraged to do the daily reflections in Fr. Richard Rohr’s Wondrous Encounters: Scripture for Lent. This book is a collection of meditations for Lent. Please get in touch with our pastoral associate, Julie Cool, if you would like to order the book ($13 per book). An invitation from our Archbiship+ Paul-André Durocher - Quebec Bishop’s Ad Limina visit – From April 23 to May 15, Bishop Durocher will be in Rome with all the Bishops of Quebec for the ad limina visit. This visit allows all Quebec bishops to perpetuate a tradition that goes back to the Middle Ages: that of meeting the Pope periodically to talk with him about their ministry. In addition to this private audience – the highlight of the visit – the bishops will tour the various departments of the Roman Curia to discuss the reality of the Church in Quebec and to learn about the universal perspective. Finally, as a sign of continuity with the apostles whose ministry they perpetuate in the Church, the bishops will celebrate the Eucharist on the tombs of Saints Peter and Paul. The last ad limina visit of Canadian bishops dates back to 2007. Tradition has it that in the name of his diocese the bishop gives a gift to the Pope for his charitable works. Monsignor Durocher invites the faithful who so desire to associate themselves concretely with this gesture. You can do this in two ways: i) Make a check in the name of the Archdiocese of Gatineau indicating

that it is a gift to the Pope and send it to the Diocesan Center, 180 ave. Mont-Bleu, Gatineau, Quebec, J8Z 3J5;

ii) Make an on-line donation by visiting the archdiocesan website (www.diocesegatineau.org) and clicking on "Donation for the Pope - Ad limina Visit" on the home page.
