THE GOLDEN GLOBES!
I thought this title might get your attention! You may even have watched the show last Sunday evening—didn’t. However, I read that the first Golden Globes was held on January 20, 1944, at the 20th Century Fox studios and….THE WINNER WAS: The Song of Bernadette! It was a biographical drama about St. Bernadette Soubirous starring Vincent Price and Jennifer Jones and it won three trophies, including Best Motion Picture. Can you imagine a movie like that even being mentioned in today’s shows and awards? Not a snowball’s chance in you-know-where! But that was wartime Europe—a dark time during which people’s needed hope, and a movie like this stirred hope in peoples hearts.
In 1964, Sidney Poitier accepted the Best Actor award in a Motion Picture Drama award for Lilies of the Field! Do you think that movie would get a look in today? Not a chance. But at that time Poitier was the first African American winner in the history of the show. Was it some kind of token award in the era of the Civil Rights Movement? Of course, this was one of numerable surges for civil rights in society that have been waged over the years with small forward movement and little victories here and there. The fight for equity for all in our world is still going on everywhere.
I mention these movies not just to ride complaint horse but to hold a raised awareness of the inequities and injustices that exist all around us that never seem to get resolved. They roll on from generation to generation and the fuse eventually blows when the victims shout, “enough is enough” and the violence starts. How many opportunities do we need and get, as a society, to set aside self-interest, domination and greed, and instead take the needed steps to right wrongs and promote the good of all, in the light of the Ten Commandments as we hear them read yet again today.
The Ten Commandments have always had a bad press. They are wrongly understood and we tend to resist them. We resent being told to conform to laws expressed as negatives. The opening sentence from today’s reading from Exodus has God saying to the people that he is the God who brought them out of slavery. “I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD” are God’s words to us, as we journey through our own personal wilderness. The phrase “house of slavery” was a raw experience of reality for God’s people. Sadly, many people’s experience of Church has been distant, harsh, negative, slavish and alienating. Slavery wasn’t only found in Old Testament Egypt but has many disguises over the centuries. There are many forms of slavery in the world today; in fact, slavery in its many forms can be part of any culture at any time. This is why the church promotes Lent as a time to rid our hearts of our personal enslavements and to face the challenge and reality of slavery that continues to exist.
The Gospel is about faithful people praying and worshipping in the temple and being exploited by greedy, grabbing moneychangers. The reaction of Jesus is a direct hit on those who were exploiting the people. He provokes strong reaction as he makes a resounding and zealous call for justice. God invites us to listen to his voice. Imagine if during Lent we spent some quiet time, just listening to God’s word. I appreciate that it can be difficult to read or listen to if we are not used to it or if we have never tried to spend time studying it or taking a bible study class. God’s word possesses a hidden treasure that is only revealed to those who take the time. It can help us to examine our lives in a positive way and to explore the areas of life that prevent us from fulfilling God’s dream for each one of us.
I can still remember those dreaded days in High School when the English teacher would hand back our compositions for the week. We would take a quick look inside the covers to see what comment was written there. I often remember the comment “room for improvement!” Lent is a time to improve our lives and most especially our relationship with God. As we make this journey together, we ask ourselves where the message of Jesus has become obstructed in us, and how we might open our hearts again to his presence and guidance.
RECONNECT, REKINDLE, RENEW!

INSTEAD OF ENGAGING IN THE NEVERENDING AND LOSING BATTLE BETWEEN PRO-LIFE AND PRO-CHOICE CHOOSE PREPARES INSTEAD! PREPARES: Pregnancy and Parenting Support If you have been fighting for the pro-life cause and have been disappointed that the fight has gone on for so long and has not been won and is not likely to be won in the way you hoped in the political climate of the past fifty years, here is a new invitation to make a difference. This Valentines Day comes with an invitation to share in a tender love story. PREPARES, a program launched by the State Catholic bishops, is a way we can “walk our talk” about celebrating the gift of life, making sure that no child—born or unborn—is ever abandoned or alone. The program comes with a promise of care from pregnancy to the child’s fifth birthday to all mothers and fathers, no matter their beliefs. Over the past five years, PREPARES statewide has been embraced by 167 parishes. 873 parish volunteers, trained by local Catholic Charities staff, have participated in supporting over 10,000 vulnerable moms, dads and children with one-on-one family companionship, infant and child essentials and raising funds for the program to thrive. The bishops hope to expand this successful program in order to serve more families so as to have a real impact to challenged individuals and families to provide life-affirming, life-changing support. WAYS TO HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE DONATE: Support PREPARES by donating to the open your heart campaign by mail or online at PREPARESforlife.org VOLUNTEER: Become a trained PREPARES volunteer for your local parish as a FAMILY COMPANION or SUPPORT GROUP member for Moms and Dads. Both opportunities provide practical, emotional presence and support to families in need. ASSIST: Sponsor a parish based NEEDS DRIVE to collect and distribute food and household needs or a CLOTHING CLOSET accessible to Prepares families. Establish a parish TRAVELLING CRIB for the collection of baby essentials. Provide age-appropriate PREPARES BAGS filled with infant and child items such as diapers and wipes, blankets, toys, and books. QUOTES: “As a volunteer with the PREPARES fatherhood support group, my faith has grown through this ministry and I have been blessed by God. I have received far more than I have given” “There are no words to express my thanks for how you saved me and my baby. An unexpected pregnancy hurled me into despair and anger. A father that disappeared, a job lost, a family who shunned me from their love and support. I did think at one point that I would lose my mind… maybe even my life. By chance, an acquaintance referred me to the PREPARES program at a local Catholic parish. I am not Catholic but I came to know true charity. Without judgement, I was embraced by kind people who assured me that despite my bleak circumstances the road ahead with my child would be paved with unconditional support. I could never have dreamed how my life would be changed. Small support with baby things turned into huge help finding a job and day care and a place for my baby and me to live. I thank every helping hand that gave me the confidence, strength and joy to become a good mother. You really did save me and my baby and I love you all for that.” FROM ARCHBISHOP ETIENNE: “From my own heart, I extend the kindness of prayer that you and your family are abundantly blessed and that all those in the sacred care of PREPARES will be renewed by our loving mission of compassion.” 100% of any donation given will go directly to serve families in need thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Knights of Columbus Council #676.
Would you be willing to use your pro-life energy to get this started here at Sacred Heart? Fr. John

POPE’S PRAYER INTENTION FOR MARCH A GREAT TRIP TO LOOK FORWARD TO
The trip to the Passion Play in Oberammergau that had
to be cancelled last Summer is rescheduled for August
28 – September 6, 2022. It is a wonderful production
that dates back to 1634 and is performed every 10 years
by the villagers of the town. It is worth a one-time visit
at least. I have experienced it twice and have loved it
and been inspired by it each time. I presently have a
group from different parishes, including Sacred Heart,
who are planning on going and there are 10 spaces left
at a guaranteed price that are available until January 29.
You wouldn’t even have to go to the Mall and endanger
yourself and others to get this as a great once-in-a-
lifetime gift. Simply call Virginia Radel who is
coordinating this trip with Collette Travel for details: she
can be reached at 206 658 3680 or at

Marriage in Christ The Marriage in Christ program has been changing lives for 11 years by helping couples make the Lord the center of their married life. Parishes across the country have offered this program to couples in a group setting but a new “at-home” program has been developed and is now available.
The new Marriage in Christ At Home Seminar is a 5-week couple’s experience that consists of streaming videos, downloadable activity packets, and easy instructions to help couples pray, talk, and act together. The cost for this program is normally $40, but for a limited time, Communication Center is offering it to you to give to anyone in your parish for FREE!
Details about the program including endorsements by Catholic bishops, priests, and couples can be found at www.marriageinchrist.com. To take advantage of this offer, couples simply need to register on the website before March 31, 2021 (with access available until May 31, 2021).
This is an amazingly easy way for you to help couples make their marriages stronger and happier in just five weeks. Think of the difference that will make for your parish and for the world as couples allow Christ to be the center of their married life!
Join the Sacred Heart Community in studying the Gospel of John Each Saturday 10:00-11:30AM beginning February 20th led by Ron Ryan. Information

CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION
Greetings Parents of 2021 First Communicants!
Below you will find the link to sign up for your child’s First Communion Mass.
A couple business items first:
Banner kits are on order and as soon as I receive them I will get them to you.
You should have received an email communication from our photogra-pher, if you did not, let me know so I can get you in touch with her.
***Fr John has asked me to communicate to you that if possible, please start bringing your family to in-person mass. He would like to be as familiar with all the children as he can be. Remember, you need to go to the parish website to register ahead of time to attend mass. www.sacredheart.org/parish.
Also, please note that on Mother’s Day weekend, Sunday, May 9th we will have a visiting priest. If you feel very strongly that your child only receive their First Communion from Fr John, do not choose that day.
I encourage you if possible to choose a weekday mass time. Those masses are very lightly attended and you may feel more comfortable bringing more guests with you or not being around so many people.
***After you choose your mass, it is your responsibility to go to the parish website and register eve-ryone coming with you. If you have guests from out of town or especially out of state or country, please allow them time to quarantine before attending mass.
There are still some folks that need to turn in a copy of their child’s baptism certificate. A friendly reminder, we MUST have this before your child can receive First Communion.
And finally, regarding confession—if your child still has not had their First Confession with Father, this also needs to be done before First Communion. You do not need an appointment. You can just show up on Saturdays at 3:00. Please let Father know this is a First Confession. (Fr really likes this opportunity to meet with each member of your family)
