DON’T BE ANXIOUS People have, it seems, a natural penchant for misplaced emphasis on unimportant things. They can easily get caught up with what they’re having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What’s for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn’t say, “Don’t eat. Don’t cook. Don’t buy clothes.” He says, “Don’t worry.” Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus reminds us that “Your heavenly Father knows” all that you need (Matthew 6:32). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW… Confessing our sins can be difficult, burdensome and embarrassing. What will the priest think of me when I admit my sins? What will others who see me going to confession think of me?
Pope Francis has indicated he goes to confessions twice a month. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta used to receive this sacrament every eight days. We should think well of anyone who goes to confession. Frankly, the priest humanly and spiritually admires anyone who approaches the sacrament, even more when a person confesses an exceptional “fall from grace” or a habitual/addictive sin. The priest is not there to “judge the person” (“Judge not and you shall not be judged” – Luke 6:37), but to understand, empathize, support, advise and forgive the sinner. Confession is apologizing truthfully for what we have done wrong, not justifying or bragging about our sins.
A VOCATION VIEW First Sunday of Lent – March 5, 2017 Jesus prayed and fasted for forty days and nights. We can take His example, begging the Lord of the Harvest for an increase of Church vocations. If you think God is calling you, call Fr. Andrew Merrick at 225.336.8778, [email protected].

CATHOLIC ENGAGED ENCOUNTER OF BATON ROUGE
The Engaged Encounter Weekend offers couples a unique opportunity to look at their commitment to each other in a deeper way as they prepare for marriage. It gives them the opportunity to focus exclusively on each other for 44 hours in peaceful surroundings, free from the pressure and distractions of the outside world. Though Catholic in origin, this experience is open to any engaged couple wanting to prepare for a deeper, more meaningful life together. The Weekend is an in-depth, private, personal, marriage preparation experience within the context of Catholic faith and values.
The weekend is open to any couple who are engaged, or considering engagement wanting to prepare for a deeper, more meaningful life together in the belief that marriage is between a man and a woman, and to be recognized by the Catholic Church. For additional information and to sign up for a weekend, go to their website at www.CEEofBR.org.
