13th Edition March 2020

Mckayla Wilkes for Congress!

We are hard into the Presidential primary race. In the wake of Super Tuesday, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden are the last two candidates standing.

As you can see in this newsletter Our Revolution Maryland and our sister group

Maryland for Bernie Sanders have been working overtime to help Bernie win the Maryland primary on April 28.

But we are doing much in addition to Presidential politics. As indeed, there is much more to be done.

Our Revolution Maryland endorsed Mckayla Wilkes’ challenge to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer in December. We believe strongly that Democrats need dynamic young progressive leaders in Congress with diverse backgrounds. Mckayla is the ideal candidate for District 5.

On February 18, we gathered at the home of Our Revolution activist and Mckayla’s friend and strong supporter Donna Brennan in Bowie. Donna has been organizing canvasses for Mckayla nearly every weekend from her home.

Please email Donna if you want to help Mckayla and click on the videos to watch!

MD Fair Elections

Our Revolution Maryland joined a coalition of progressive groups throughout the state to promote fair elections. On February 17, we co-signed a letter to Governor Hogan and the Maryland General Assembly calls for legislation to extend public financing to the races for Attorney General and Comptroller. Read it here.

MD Tax Legislation Update

In Presidential election years, the lion’s share of our political focus is on the race for the White House. While this is certainly understandable, there are also times when it is lamentable.

For example, a more progressive Maryland State tax policy would go a long way towards improving the quality of life for millions here in the Free State.

Our Revolution Maryland’s Treasurer Jimmy Tarlau – a long time member of the House of Delegates – has been tracking the various tax bills wending through the Maryland General Assembly.

Jimmy’s comprehensive March 7 Legislative update can be accessed by clicking on the pdf image at right.

Lobbying efforts continued - To join this endeavor, please email David by clicking on his name at left.

Lobbying efforts – Our Revolution Howard’s David LeGrande organized a successful Tax Lobbying Day February 24 and is planning a return Monday March 9.

Operation Phonebank Maryland

Courtesy of Our Revolution’s phonebank dialer, Our Revolution Maryland will be reaching out to the approximately 30,000 or so Maryland activists in Our Revolution’s database. The goal is to turn these “clicktivists” into on the ground local and state activists.

Volunteers are already telephoning activists who live in their county or region to discuss their chapter and to invite them to upcoming events. This is a crucial aspect of of our growth strategy designed to increase: the number of 1) people, 2) programs, and 3) funds available for us to promote progressive policies and increase our power.

If you’d like to be part of this exciting program, please contact your chapter leader or email Hal Ginsberg.

Our Revolution Baltimore City/CountyCandidates Forum

February 15 - Our Revolution Baltimore City/County invited all candidates for any city office to make their case in advance of the April 28 primary. Over 30 individuals participated in the forum including Mayoral, City Council, and Comptroller aspirants.

With a standing room only crowd packing a 120-guest capacity library meeting room, the event was an unqualified success.

Co-Chairs Sheila Ruth and Jacob Kravetz devised a series of multi-person panels allowing time for candidates to introduce themselves and answer select questions.

Many of the candidates completed a questionnaire in order to be considered for Their answers are available here.

Final endorsements will be announced Monday March 9.

For more information please contact Sheila Ruth and Jacob Kravetz at [email protected].
