Te Spirit o Spirit WeekBy Ian Williams 14, Design Editor

Spirit week comes but once a year at Whiteld.Te ve day long celebration o Warrior Spiritis one o the strongest and oldest traditionsWhiteld possesses.

Te week starts o with Class Choice day, which really distinguishes the classes and beginsto determine who is the most creative and mostspirited this year. From win Day to SeniorCitizen Day, weve seen it all.

uesday kicks o the rst all-school themedday which is one o the oldest and avorite:Character Day. It wont be hard to see igerWoods in the hall or even Superman, a cowboy, oreven Mrs. Greathouse. Character Day usually has

the most varied and creative outts o the week.Halway through the week is Decade Day. Tis

really takes you on a walk down memory lane asyou stroll down rom the ront hallway to WoodsHall. I think we can all expect to see some groovy70s dancers with Aros and quite the array o 80sleg warmers and hair scrunchies.

Tursday is Holiday Day. A ormer classchoice pick, this day brings in quite theassortments o costumes ranging rom the Easterbunny to Brits on their holiday.

Spirit week saves the best and most spirited orlast: the amous Green and White day. Studentswith their ull bodies painted ood Woods Hall.

Tis is the most anticipated day o the weekand also the loudest. Its not uncommon or thenoise level in the auditorium to reach borderline,ear-damaging levels. With almost 400 peoplechanting things such as We love Whiteld it

really shows how spirited and special this placereally is.

Over 400 students and their parents join eachother on the eld hockey hill to enjoy the annuallip sync and bonre that concludes the week. By

this time o the week all o the Whiteld Warriorsare as spirited as they can be.

Students o all ages participate in theirown grades creative, well-rehearsed lip sync.Troughout the Warrior estival, all o the all

varsity sport teams and players are announcedto get the crowd spirited or the homecominggames played the ollowing day. By the end o tstaged event on the eld hockey eld, the lip syn

As always, one o the best parts ostarting o the school year is meetingeveryone that will be joining your class.Tis year, Whiteld welcomed 86 newstudents with the seventh graders leadingat 25 new students, setting a new record

or the Whitfeld community. We nowhave a grand total o almost our hundred

    students!

And the best thing about new Whitfeld

Warriors? How they get involved rightaway and dont wait until they are told todo so. Even beore school began, many newstudents showed up to the publicationsworkshop to get a eel or what it would belike to be on the newspaper and yearbooksta.

Ten when orientation rolled around, new students were going around to all thebooths to nd out all that Whiteld had to

oer. Many signed up or multiple clubs andwere eager to get started right away.

I thought that being a new studentwould be hard, especially or my senior year. But the Whiteld community has been sowelcoming and inviting to me, they madethe transition very smooth and enjoyable!said Anna Morgan 14.

Many new students have joinedsports and clubs and are making greatcontributions to our community. Its hard totell whos new and whos not anymore.

Whiteld is really un because aergoing to the same school or six years I am

now able to make new riends and havedierent experiences, said Kaelyn Beeman20.

Recently, I sat down with Mr. John Delautre to talk about nising up his rst year at Whiteld, new security measures, ashion aother issues.

Te most important part about Mr. Delautres rst year, was buing relationships, he said. Mrs. Greathouse is extremely gied ancredit her or helping me make this transition. She was his main

and key to his success. Te part o his job that nobody knows abothat he has an important level o accountability with the trustees ware his boss. Tey are the vision keepers o the school.

Whiteld is an amazing place, and even though Ive been in tbusiness thirty plus years, I still wanted to do well by this school.Whitelds mission is very close to my heart, he said. He wants tokeep the classroom environment interesting instead o having a bing heres what you need to know environment. He really wantethis job and once he got it, he wanted to do it right. He took his tiand listened to advice rom Mrs. Greathouse, trusteesand parents.

We also talked to him about ashion trends amongthe young men at the school. Mr. Delautre says thathe has seen many ashions come and go and it used

to be that when you reached age twelve, you wouldstart dressing like your parents. He thinks tank topson guys are just a bad look even i you have a superbod.

When asked about the Intersession we will behaving in March, he said, It will give students andteachers an opportunity to pursue topics in depth. Hes hoping iing to open up our thinking, and hes anticipating in the second yo it, we could do an expanded version.

Lastly, we talked briey about the security changes and Mr. Delautre explained that this was something that had been in the wor

or a while because we are a school that used to be eaaccessible and we needed to change that. We now ha

cameras that will hopeully keep potential threats aw

Another aspect o the new security is that the ront dooare open only at lunch. It may not make sense to opthe doors at lunch, but the security presence is

right there and they are all trained police meSometimes you have to give up a little to sleemore soundly.

Overall, he thinks we are going to have a really great year especially with the new growth and enrollment. Teres nobody in thtown that does what we do and we need to do a better job o lettinpeople know that.

Te word violence is starting to become syn-onymous in the media with Syria, as the clash be-tween President Bashar Assads regime and Syriancitizens continues. Te United Nations estimatesthat there are more than 100,000 casualties and mil-lions displaced. But its the method o the violence, not just the amount o it, that has garnered appear-

ance in the spotlight most recently. With possibleevidence o chemical weapons coming to light, theUS and the world questions whether the Assad Re-gimes attempts at keeping the opposition in checkhas gone ar enough to provoke world-wide inter-vention.

Syria has reportedly been researching and pro-ducing weapons o mass destruction since the 80s.Its believed they smuggled the materials or mak-ing these weapons in by using dierent companiesas ronts. Tis suspicion was conrmed on July 23,2012, when Syria actually conrmed that they pos-sessed a stockpile o chemical weapons. However,Syria says the weapons are reserved or national de-ense against oreign countries.

Many world powers question Syrias intentionsdespite what they said, and these suspicions gainedurther support when unconrmed reports by AlJazeera released stated a gas attack killed seven ci-vilians in the rebel-held al-Bayyada neighborhoodo Homs on the December 23, 2012.

Many U.S. ofcials put merit into these reports, but, ofcially, the White House was skeptical. Later,on March 19, 2013, similar reports appeared sayingthat chemical weapons may have been red into theKhan al-Assal district in Aleppo and the Al Atebehsuburbs o Damascus. Aer this the UN decided toinvestigate, but they encountered much resistancerom the Syrian government.

Ten, on April 13, 2013, British military scien-tists ound evidence o chemical weapon use in theSyrian conict. Tis discovery led to Britain andFrance sending a letter to the UN on April 18. Teletter claimed that there was evidence suggestingthat the Syrian government had used chemicalweapons on more than one occasion since Decem-

ber 2012. Similarly, U.S intelligence assessed thatthe Assad regime had been using chemical weap-ons, specically sarin gas. Another attack occurredon April 29 in Saraqib, during which two peopledied and 13 more were injured. Tings continuedto progress in this manner until eventually, on June13, the United States conrmed that there is de-nitive proo that the Assad regime had repeatedlyused chemical weapons on rebel orces.

Recently, on August 21, Ghouta was the sceneo yet another alleged Assad regime chemicalweapons attack. Tis attack is believed to havecaused the deaths o 1,300 people, perhaps more.

Te day beore this attack, President BarackObama stated, We have been very clear to theAssad regime, but also to other players on theground, that a red line or us is we start seeing awhole bunch o chemical weapons moving aroundor being utilized. Tat would change my calculus.Tat would change my equation.

Aer the attack, on August 31, PresidentObama asked Congress to authorize direct Ameri-can military intervention in the Syrian civil war.Te Authorization or the Use o Military ForceAgainst the Government o Syria to Respond toUse o Chemical Weapons was approved on Sep-tember 4, 2013. United States intervention nowseems inevitable.

n the news: Earlier this year, in a controversialmove, Edward Snowden, a ormer CIA and NSAmployee, intentionally leaked classied detailsbout US surveillance to the media.

Te actions o the NSA violated the FourthAmendment. Te Fourth Amendment states thathe government requires a warrant, and getting

warrants in secret courts is certainly not whathey meant.

Te government is collecting inormationbout everyone, and not just US citizens. In act,he US is giving away inormation on its citizenso other countries. What the NSA is doing isnconstitutional and morally wrong.

Although his actions could be consideredreason, Edward Snowden is just trying to shinelight on what the NSA has been doing in their

ecret FISA courts. Te argument that Snowdens endangering the US by leaking these docu-

ments is rubbish. I Snowden wanted to endangerAmerica, he would have sold inormation to ournemies.

Snowden is a patriot. He is trying to bringttention to the act that our rights are beingrampled upon, and how privacy is merely a ruse.

People post tons o personal inormation onthe internet; in act, the 21st century should becalled the Inormation Age, as we blindly shareeverything. People eel like their inormation issae, but it isnt.

    creature of the sea...

Tis marvelous hunk o mustached beauty is the

alrus. Walruses are beautiul in their own special

ay, and are also some o the most iconic, yet mis-

nderstood, mammals that we know today.

Tese beautiul blobs o skin and at have some

the most social habits in all o the animal king-

om. Tey are constantly living in a pack, commu-

cating with loud bellows and snorts, but they also

ave a very dark side around mating season. Walrus

ave been known to grow up to 12 eet long and live

r up to 40 years! Tese huge animals weigh about

5 tons on average, and large males will send every

ngle pound o his body towards any other male

ho poses as a threat to his chances at mating.

In many cases, walrus were ound to deend their

    source.

Te walrus is a curious specimen because o

its incredible girth, yet it has spectacular mobility

when in the water. Teir whiskers are not only

or looks, but they are actually supersensitivehairs called mustcial vibrissae which are used

or detecting shellsh, their avorite ood, on

the dark ocean bottom. Walruses even have the

strange ability to slow their heartbeats when div-

ing or ood; this allows them to hold their breath

or up to 30 minutes and, o course, to survive in

    the icy arctic water.

Tese beautiul wonders o nature are also

very intelligent and are trained just like sea lions

and seals at some aquariums. Although they lack

the motor skills o a seal on land, they do possess

the capability to learn many varieties o tricks,

rom doing sit-ups and push-ups, to pretending

to tango or play a saxophone. However, walruses

    are no laughing matter.

During the mating season, bull males are

almost in a blind rage towards anything thatgets too close to comort. Although they look

essentially immobile, do not underestimate them.

Walruses, unlike seals, are able to run on all ours

and can reach the speed o a running human in

short bursts. Tese animals can weigh as much

as a midsized car and are capable o doing an

enormous amount o damage to a human. Luck-

ily they are not naturally hostile and captive wal-

ruses ofen create great bonds with their trainers.
