SRMS Simulations Build Compassion and AwarenessScott Ridge seventh-grade Spanish classes started the yearfocusing on Cuba and the refugee experience. The students readEl Escape Cubano by Mira Canion based on a true story of an11-year old boy who, along with his family and friends, secretlybuilds a raft to escape from Havana, Cuba to the USA. Then,SRMS students built “balsas” (rafts) and learned more about theharrowing journey to freedom. They used the SRMS rowingmachines to test whether they could go the distance.
