Lee Lygiros

Bell X1 Revell 1/32nd scale Mike Hanlon

A6M-5 Zero Tamiya 1/48th scale Mike Hanlon

Ki-27 Nate Hasegawa / Mania 1/48th scale

Modified cockpit including wiring the

instrument. Modifications were made to the

empennage. For extra detail Lee put is a

piece of wood on the seat that Chuck

Yeager had to use to close the canopy,

since his shoulder was injured in a late night

horseback ride.

Aeromaster Decals,Tamiya Mitsubishi

Tamiya IJA Grey Kit decals

Steve Kumamoto

P-43 lancer Rare Planes 1/72nd scale

P-47N Johan 1/72nd scale Built 40 years ago. Lengthened the wings 18” modified wingtips. Modified the prop from asymmetrical to symmetrical 13’ blades.

P-47M Airfix 1/72nd scale This was built from the Airfix P-47D razorback 45 years ago (Were no bubbletops in 1/72nd at that time.) Scratched or highly modified: Spine, cockpit interior, engine crankcase

Vacuformed kit. Scratch built interior and landing gear

Vacuformed canopy. Scratch built the dorsal fillet. Aluminum foil used to replicate the nmf.

Modified prop and canopy. Scratch built air and oil intakes + detailed landing gear. Steve was inspired because an IPMS chapter made P-47 decals and thought to include an M – even though no kit was available. Markings for 63rd FS /56th FG

James Batchelder

F-15C MSIP II Great Wall Hobby 1/48th scale Model Master Paints, Bullseye Decals 144th FS Paul Gasiorowski

USS Nautilus, Lindberg 1/300th scale Just a total of 20 prts including the two hull halves and deck planking. Overall flat black with nonskid deck in dark gray.

Vickers Vanguard Airfix 1/144th scale. Used MicroMark Mask for the windows. A straight forward build, most time spent on masking for painting!

Jim liked this one a lot. The only issue he found was that the canopy clear could have had more of a base on the rail. Not much to align it to.

Modified the diving planes to fit against the hull. Conning tower consists of 9 periscopes and antenna. Decals from the “spares” box

Primed with Tamiya Lt Gray followed by Model master Acrylics and non-buffing Aluminum metalizer.

Northern Illinois Airshow

Norris Graser

The annual airshow held on September 10, 2016, formerly known as Wings over Waukegan, has been restructured and now known as Northern Illinois Airshow. This year’s event will be a 1 day affair on September 10th. This is an easily accessed event, opening to the public at 9:30 am. Plenty of static aircraft including various warbirds. A great opportunity to talk to the airmen and / or get those detail shots for your next model build. Flying starts at noon and goes nonstop until 4PM. For photographers, there are plenty of good opportunities for taxi and action imagery. A big problem with many airshows is the fact that the flying is backlit, making really good pictures harder to come by. Not so much at Waukegan. The sun is at your back for at least 2 ½ hours before the sun crosses the runway. Even then, good pictures can be had by paying attention to the aerobatics. Those bringing SLR digitals with 300 to 400mm lens will fare the best. However, there are plenty of good take off / landing and taxi shots for those with “point n shoot” equipment. OR, you could just bring a lawn chair and enjoy the show! Various types of aircraft will be performing including aerobatic planes and warbirds from various era. Many of the aircraft will be supplied by the Warbird Heritage Foundation located across the runway from the show. For WW II buffs, the P51D Baby Duck and a TBM Avenger will perform. Those into jets can look forward to an F-86E Sabre, A-4B Skyhawk, L-39 Albatross, T-33, T-37 and T2 Buckeye. At this time, no modern active duty military a/c are scheduled. This week in flight test history

412th Test Wing Public Affairs

July 29, 2016 EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — July 24, 1951 — The Bell X-1D made the first, and the only successful, flight of its career when it was air-dropped from an EB-50A mothership (s/n 46-006) to make an unpowered glide to the Rogers Dry Lake Bed. Jean “Skip” Ziegler was the pilot. The X-1D was the first of the second-generation X-1 rocket research planes to be completed and it was intended for heat transfer research. (Edwards History Office file photo)

Bell X-1D

s/n 48-1386

From Joe Baugher’s site:

The first of the second generation of supersonic rocket planes. To be used for heat transfer

research. Assigned to NACA High-Speed Flight Research Station, Edwards AFB, CA.

On Jul 24, 1951 the X-1D was launched over Rogers Dry Lake, on what was to become the only

successful flight of its career. The unpowered glide was completed after a nine-minute descent,

but upon landing, the nose landing gear failed and the aircraft slid ungracefully to a stop. Repairs

took several weeks to complete and a second flight was scheduled for mid-August. On Aug 22,

1951, the X-1D was lost in a fuel explosion during preparations for the first powered flight. The

aircraft was destroyed upon impact after it was jettisoned into Rogers Dry Lake from its EB-50A

mothership.
