NOAA: El Nino developing in Pacific

Rising obesity changesperceptions

BOSTON, 12 July — Researchers say that as the USpopulation becomes heavier perception of what is a nor-mal weight has also increased. A group led by Mary Burke,an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, com-pared the results of surveys done between 1988 and 1994and then between 1999 and 2004 by the US Centers forDisease Control, CNN reported.

The researchers said women questioned for the latersurvey actually tended to have a more realistic perceptionof their own weight than those in the earlier one. Womenwith a normal Body Mass Index were more likely to de-scribe themselves as overweight between 1988 and 1994.

Dr Melina Jampolis, who was not involved in the re-search, said some of the change in perception could comefrom campaigns aimed at discouraging women from seek-ing fashion-model thinness. But she said the general in-crease in overweight is more likely to make normal weightseem even more normal.—Internet

WASHINGTON, 12 July —Rising sea surface tempera-tures in the equatorial re-gion of the eastern Pacificshow an El Nino is devel-oping, US weather fore-casters say. The NationalOceanic and AtmosphericAdministration said onThursday the El Nino is ex-pected to last through thecoming winter.

El Nino, Spanish for“little boy,” was named af-ter the Christ child becausethe phenomenon was asso-ciated with Christmas. TheEl Nino effect is a combi-nation of air and ocean cur-

rents and oscillations thatcan have a major effect onglobal weather.

“Advanced climate sci-ence allows us to alert in-dustries, governments andemergency managers aboutthe weather conditions ElNino may bring so thesecan be factored into deci-sion-making and ultimatelyprotect life, property andthe economy,” said JaneLubchenco, under secretaryof commerce for oceans

and atmosphere and NOAAadministrator.

El Nino’s negative ef-fects can include stormierweather in the southernUnited States, less-produc-tive fisheries in the Pacificand heavy rains andmudslides in CentralAmerica. Positive effectsinclude less-violent Atlantichurricanes, milder wintersin the northern UnitedStates and more rain in thesouthwest.—Internet

“After cutting downthe main plant, I leave only

I send up my products bymotorized boat toBargayar Port in Yangon.Last year, banana waspriced at 2000 kyats abunch, so I got about eightmillion kyats,” he said, conducting us round thefarm.

It was very hearten-ing to see heaps of bananabunches, which were with-out underdeveloped fruitsamong them. Now, localfarmers are growing spe-cies of Khunwa, Israelifragrant banana, and othermarketable species on anextensive scale.

G-8 nations vow to curb ENRtechnology, surprise India

NEW DELHI, 12 July—The group of eight developed countries have vowed tocurb transfer enrichment and reprocessing (ENR) technology and equipment, surprising India as it goes against the spirit of Nuclear Suppliers Group’s “clean”waiver to it.

In a joint statement on non-proliferation, the G-8 nations also pushed othermembers of the 45-nation NSG to reach a consensus within this year to disallowtransfer of ENR to countries which are not signatories to NPT.

The statement was issued after the Summit that was attended by India’s PrimeMinister Manmohan Singh in L’Aquila in Italy.

The move, which would have an impact on India, comes even though the NSGhad last September given New Delhi “clean” and “full” waiver for civil nuclearcooperation with the world despite it being a non-signatory to NPT.

“To reduce the proliferation risks associated with the spread of enrichment andreprocessing facilities, equipment and technology, we welcome the progress thatcontinues to be made by the NSG on mechanisms to strengthen controls ontransfers of such enrichment and reprocessing items and technology,” said thestatement issued Friday.—MNA/PTI

Did dinos burrow to survive harsh climate?ATLANTA, 12 July—

Dinosaurs of differentspecies in different hemi-spheres — millionsof years apart — bur-rowed, perhaps to sur-vive, an Emory Univer-sity paleontologist says.

Anthony Martin, thepaleontologist, and otherresearchers had discov-ered 95-million-year-oldskeletal remains of dino-saurs in a fossilized bur-row in southwesternMontana in 2006.

The researchers said

the find suggested bur-rowing may have al-lowed some dinosaurs tosurvive extreme environ-ments, in contrast tosome theories about howthey became extinct.

Now, Martin has foundevidence of more dino-saur burrows, on theother side of the world, inVictoria, Australia, find-ings to be published thismonth in Cretaceous Re-search say.

“This research helps usto better understand long-

term geologic change andhow organisms may haveadapted as the Earth hasundergone periods of glo-bal cooling and warm-ing,” said Martin, a sen-ior lecturer in environ-mental studies at Emoryand an honorary researchassociate at Monash Uni-versity in Melbourne.

The Victoria fossils areabout 110-million-years-old, dating to one of thelast times Earth experi-enced global warming.

Tropical fish enduring off Sydney coastSYDNEY, 12 July—

More tropical fish spe-cies are thriving offthe Australian coastnear Sydney becauseocean temperatures havewarmed, an ecologistsays.

Marine ecologistDavid Booth of Sydney’sUniversity of Technologysaid when combined withthe increasing strength ofocean currents in the re-gion, warmer tempera-tures have made the tra-

ditionally cold watersmore hospitable to fishspecies, the SydneyMorning Herald reportedin its Sunday edition.

“More and more of thefish are surviving winterdown here,” Booth said.“So long as the tempera-ture environment is cor-rect, a lot of them will dojust fine.” Booth said thegrowth of tropical fishspecies off Sydney’scoast and the increasingtemperatures are indica-

tive of global climatechange.

Peter Doherty, Austral-ian Institute of MarineScience director, said thewarming current has alsoallowed the New SouthWales black sea urchinto survive in Tasmanianwaters.

Doherty told theMorning Herald the un-dersea creatures wreakhavoc on the sea floor bydestroying kelp beds.

KEYSTONE, 12 July—Knee surgery doesn’tnecessarily cut short aprofessional football ca-reer, a researcher reportedat an orthopedic confer-ence in Keystone, Colo,on Saturday.

Robert H Brophy, anassistant professor in theDepartment of Ortho-pedic Surgery at theWashington UniversitySchool of Medicine andassistant team physicianfor the St Louis Rams,

delivered a paper on hisstudy of two new surger-ies at the American Or-thopaedic Society forSports Medicine’s annualmeeting.

He found footballplayers who had anterior-cruciate ligament recon-struction have a longerplaying career than thosewho have a simple menis-cus repair. The ACL is theligament that restricts for-ward motion of the shin.An injury to the ACL

makes the knee less sta-ble and more prone to ar-thritis and cartilage tears.

The meniscus is a discthat cushions the knee. The meniscus surgery hasa briefer recovery timethan ACL reconstruction, but apparently leads to ashorter career, Brophysaid. Players who havehad ACL reconstructionhave careers of similarlength to those of playerswithout ACL injuries.

July — Southern Elephantseals responded rapidly toclimate and habitat changeand established a newbreeding site thousands ofkilometres from existingbreeding grounds, accord-ing to new research.

An international re-search team, includingpost-doctorate Dr Mark deBruyn and collaboratorsfrom the US, South Af-rica and Italy, led by Pro-fessor Rus Hoelzel fromthe School of Biologicaland Biomedical Sciences,Durham University, foundthat when the Antarctic

DNA sequences from

the ancient remains ofseals from the now ex-tinct Antarctic colonyshowed high levels of ge-netic diversity, probablydue to the very largepopulation size sustainedthere.
