We are pleased to bring you your second edition of The Mill Creek Influence magazine and hope you will enjoy the monthly publications.

N2 Publishing is the leading provider of specialty publications for residents of exclusive communities across the nation. Our objective is to turn neighborhoods into communities with our monthly newsletters. Locally, we produce magazines for Clyde Hill, Medina, Yarrows Point, Newcastle, and Gig Harbor.

This publication is a social newsletter and it is designed to reflect the social activities and interests within Mill Creek. We are not associated, endorsed, or sanctioned by your local HOA or Country Club; therefore we will not be the “voice” of your HOA, Property Manager, or Developer. If you have questions regarding anything that involves the HOA or Country Club, please contact them directly as we are not a representative of the Board or the Club.

This publication is being provided FREE OF CHARGE to you as a homeowner as the cost of producing, printing, and mailing each newsletter is covered by the advertising partners that you see in each issue. We try our best to screen our advertisers to ensure that they can provide the types of services that you may need or want as a homeowner. If you currently utilize a business that does excellent work, please let us know, as they may want to reach out to your neighbors as well. Also, if you own or run a business and would like information on reaching your neighbors each month, contact me for advertising information or to simply list your business for free in the Resident Business Guide.

Each publication you will see is unique to your neighborhood, and the publication will reflect who you are as a community. A typical publication will include: social event information specific to the residents of your neighborhood, upcoming meeting infor-mation, fun and FREE social events put on by N2, city issues and ideas, activities and club information, business informa-tion, pictures, personal stories, and articles (mostly written and

photographed by your neighbors), along with other information specifically tailored to your neighborhood.

Along with the magazine, we will host various free events to bring the community together for social events - free dinners out at top restaurants, salon reviews, golf tournaments, and more. We will communicate to you the various events we are hosting through the newsletter and emails. If you wish to be included please email me at [email protected].

The events and the publication are designed to increase social connections between residents and to develop a true sense of community. By providing a well-designed publication full of stories and photos, we have seen N2 neighborhoods increase attendance at social events and allow residents to widen their circle of friends.

I look forward to meeting each of you at our upcoming neigh-borhood events!

Golf Tipof the Month

Drives always down the middle? Chips within three feet? Nary a three putt in the round? Well, have you seen a golf pro for a lesson lately?

Today’s touring golf professionals have a quiver full of coaches at their disposal. Look at the top of the Fed Ex Cup list and those players have swing coaches, short game coaches and sports psychol-ogists. The players consult these golf gurus frequently; some players have lessons every week.

What started as an effort to purchase a new putter ended as the best golf lesson of the year. I visited our local pro shop to look at new putters. (I was having putting issues. And, as any good golfer

How is your golf game?

will tell you, it is the arrow not the archer that is typically the prob-lem.) Once there, the head pro started by asking many questions. He looked at my practice stroke indoors and then outdoors on the putting green. He had me stoke short and long putts directly to him. Only after 15 minutes of inquest and study did he offer two bits of advice.

Armed with this new knowledge, I selected a hole about 12 feet away, dropped five balls on the putting green and proceeded to stroke each one into the middle of the cup. I smiled, the pro smiled, and I thought why had I not done this earlier?

So go see your local golf pro. Your game will thank you for it.

Meet Gangster

tell us your pet’s story. Where/why did you get your pet?

I moved to Honolulu, HI in 2008 and decided to purchase a new puppy, because my family had a cute puppy when I was growing up and I felt the need to have a fuzzy companion to keep me happy. As I entered the Discount Pet Store in Honolu-lu, I noticed a little teddy bear looking creature in the cage and asked the attendant if I could please see that one. She advised me to sanitize my hands, and sit in this designated room to hold puppies. As she brought in the puppy and set him on the floor he immediately ran straight to my feet. As I picked him up, he just as immediately flipped to his belly in my hands and lay there as if he was dead. Very funny, and also made me want him even more. So, I purchased him at 3 month and 3 pounds. Is there a story behind its name? Please include your pet’s breed/age if applicable…

I remember taking a trip with my mother to visit her friend in Nebraska - they had a giant cocker spaniel, and I forgot his real

preciouspetsname, but his nickname was Gahngpeh (which is Korean for gangster), and I absolutely loved that name and decided it would fit my little dog perfect. However, my puppy looked more like a teddy bear then any kind of gangster, so I tested out one other name, Gizmo (from the movies Gremlins). I tried calling him multiple times using Gizmo but he only seemed to answer to Gahngpeh. The first time I called out that name he popped his head up, as if to say "Yes?" So technically he picked his own name. Since then he has developed a gangster type of personality - usually only doing what he wants to do- so the name was a perfect fit. Our home here and the park across the street give him ample space to roam and frolic - he is really more comfortable liv-ing here in Washington. Gahngpeh is a shitzu, and he turns 3-years-old on September 27th.

What special talents/quirks does your pet have?

Gahngpeh is a very intelligent little guy. He picked up a lot of tricks as time progressed. He has already learned a plethora of

different things. He knows how to do the basics of sit, stay, up, and lay down. He also knows shake, high five, and when giv-ing him a treat I usually ask the question, "What do you say?" which prompts him to bark/whine for his little reward. He also knows BANG, when he rolls to the ground playing dead, and then rolls over. When playing with his toys I grab them from him and say, "MINE!" and he goes into a hissy fit, barking, and whining, as if to say, "NO IT'S MINE!" And when anyone in my family collects his toys to put them away he gets frantic; and, when everything is put away nicely, he goes and grabs one toy at a time and places them back out onto the floor where he likes to play and see them. Also, when sleeping, if awaken to move into a different room, he will growl and is a tad bit grumpy as to why you awoke him from his slumber. And when in a deep sleep, he snores, VERY loudly. When you ask for kisses, and pucker your lips, he will usually attack your face with a barrage of licks. He is super sweet and loving, but will let you know when he does not like something. He is his own little person.

What’s the funniest story you have about your pet?

Gahngpeh absolutely loves watching TV, especially when there are puppies on. His favorite movies thus far are, Beverly Hills Chi-huahua, Marmaduke, and Marley and Me. So when I'm too tired to play with him, like a little child, I put on one of those movies and they have his full attention.

Just how spoiled is your pet?

That one picture I sent to you of him with all his toys should show just how spoiled he really is. When he was about 6-months-old, he was involved in a horrible accident that frac-tured his hip and severed his tail, which is why my puppy has no tail. I tried everything I could to try and get them to save the tail but the vets told me it would be pointless because it would just be a dead tail. As of today, he is in perfect health. The vet was shocked at how active he was after the severity of his acci-dent. I have spoiled him with a squeaky toy every time I go out to the store since he was very young and he never seems to tire of any new toy, which is also why he has so many toys. What else should we know about your pet and/or how your pet has enriched your home/family?

He treats everyone in our home differently, and LOVES spend-ing time with everyone. But whenever we leave to go to the store, run an errand, or just go to work, with the mere utterance of, "Be good." he will either 1. Run to the door you are about to exit the house from and droop his head as to say, "Would

to really leave this!?" or 2. Go into hiding because he does not want to be left alone. My mom was a little hesitant at first when I originally purchased him, because of her attachment to our first dog - a poodle named Happy who we had for about 13 years. As a family we have all grown so attached to this little guy that we could not imagine life without him. My parents have started to call him their Grand pup, because he is so much like a baby. Everyone who meets him adores him. And everyone who gets to know him wants to be around him more. Life would not be the same without him, and it's very true what they say, "When you own a dog, you live a happier and lon-ger life." I know first hand it's true when I return home to this little hyper ball of energy so happy to greet me at the door - then runs for his toys so we can start playing immediately. When my mom returns home from work, he always has to give her a hug (she bends down to say "give me huggie" and he in return puts his paws on her legs and his head on her shoulder). He is the greatest little puppy ever. Our whole family could not see a day without him. I know that everyone out there thinks their dog is the greatest most special little thing in the world, and that is no exception in our family as well.

Western Washington Family Medicine is excited about their new second location in the Silver Lake

area. At our new location we will be able to really personalize primary health care for the entire family. Our new third floor space should be completed by December 1st. We currently have Dr. Marissa Fernandez seeing patients at our new location Mon – Wed, Dr. David Lindstrom on Thursdays and Dr. Albert Yuen on Fridays. Family Medicine is a wonderful practice that enables us to see the entire family from newborns to geriatrics. We love getting to know your entire family and taking care of all of your medical needs. We have the support of our multi specialty Western Washington Medical Group to refer our patients to if they are in need of a specialist’s care.

School will be starting soon; we do offer sports physicals and can update your children with the immunizations needed to start their new year.

We also look forward to starting our group visits for our patients who have high blood pressure, diabetes and or high cholesterol this winter. Group visits are a great way for patients to get to spend more time with their provider, interact with oth-ers with the same medical conditions, ask questions and be able to support each other with ideas and feedback.

Patients still have their BP, weight, and vital signs taken in the privacy of an exam room with an MA. Dr. Fernandez will be having healthy cooking demonstrations during the group visits to show patients that cooking healthy can really be very flavor-ful and taste great. She has taken classes for fun at the Culinary

Pathways

Institute of America to incorporate recipes into her Healthy Lifestyle Program for our patients.

We look forward to keeping you updated on the progress of get-ting our new programs started this winter. We would love the opportunity to take care of you and your family’s medical needs.

Hector, owner of La Palmera greeted our group warmly. Thehospitality and attention to detail from Hector and his staffmade this evening truly memorable.

With the atmosphere and hospitality already creating a fabulous mood, we were served an amazing variety of Mexican cuisine. The evening started with warm tortilla chips, fresh salsa, pico de gallo, and bean dip getting our mouths watering for more fresh and spicy dishes. In unison we received our Jumbo Cadillac Margarita on the Rocks and Jumbo Strawberry Margaritas, both a huge, impressive, tasty drink! Next a beautiful platter of chicken taquitos and chicken quesadilla appetizers arrived and were amazing.

caution: As several readers who made this craft found out, some acorns are infested with weevils. The weevils feed on the nutmeat while they develop over the summer, and when the acorns hit the ground in the fall, these insects know it's time to start chewing their way out and into the ground -- or your home. A solution: before you start the project, bake the acorns in a slow oven to kill the weevils. Just be careful not to burn the acorns!

1. Place the unwrapped caramels in a shallow microwave-safe bowl.2. Mix in the milk and microwave on high for 2 minutes, stir ring after 1 minute (the caramels will keep their shape as they soften, so be sure to stir them).3. When the caramels are melted, remove the dish from the microwave with potholders and stir the sauce until smooth. 4. Set aside to cool slightly.5. To thoroughly coat an apple, roll it in the caramel sauce, then hold it upright so the sauce slides down the sides.6. Generously butter a baking sheet. Twist off the apple stems and spear each fruit with a craft stick.7. Roll one apple in the caramel sauce until it's thoroughly coated. Place it, stick pointing up, on the baking sheet.8. Working quickly, coat the remaining apples in the caramel sauce. The caramel coating will be gooey, so refrigerate the apple for 15 minutes or until the caramel is slightly hardened.9. Holding the apple by the stick, use candy to turn it into a monster.

Refrigerate again until the caramel is hardened and the candy is set. Makes 4 to 6.

Caramel apples have always been a favorite, but when you use candies to make them monsters they become the life of the party.

Galápagos: Wildlife Wonderland2012 Prices From $3,595 plus on-tour air for 8 Days - Tauck Bridges

If you ever wanted to explore lands time forgot, this is your chance to do it in style. Pack your bathing suits, sunscreen, hats and comfortable hiking shoes and prepare to get wet as you set sail for some of the most amazing tropical islands in the world... on Tauck Bridges' most excellent of Galápagos tours featuring a four-night cruise aboard M / V Santa Cruz. Have you ever seen birds wearing bright red or blue "shoes"? You're sure to see lots of them during this eco-cruise because the Galápagos is one of their favorite places to kick up their heels.

How about giant tortoises that weigh up to 550 lbs. and pre-historic-looking iguanas that hunt and fish in the ocean? Did you ever see penguins and sea lions so friendly that they might swim right alongside you in brilliant blue water? Even the crabs are different here, with their bright red and yellow shells that provide quite a contrast to the black-lava rocks of these volcanic islands. Luckily for us, not much has changed since Charles Darwin first set foot on these remote islands off Ecuador in 1831; these islands are protected and tourists must leave these islands exactly as they found them, leaving only their footprints so this amazing place can thrive as nature intended.

Testimonial: We went on the July Tauck Bridges trip to the Galápa-gos aboard the Santa Cruz with our 9-year-old son and had the time of our lives! We heartily recommend this location to anyone, especially families. You will have an unforgettable experience!

REST Stop..Mattress City, a different kind of Mattress store…By Stewart Patey/Owner Mattress City

At Mattress City, we know the importance of having a supportive mattress and how that assists you in getting a great nights rest, but we also

want to offer additional key steps that you can take to assure you’re getting the best REST possible! The experts tell us to avoid the following...

Lifestyle Suggestions That Will Enhance Your Sleepreduce or avoid as many drugs as possible. Many drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, may adversely affect sleep. Especially if taken just before you go to bed.

Avoid caffeine. At least one study has shown that, in some peo-ple, caffeine is not metabolized efficiently, leaving you feeling its effects long after consumption. So, an afternoon cup of coffee or tea will keep some people from falling asleep at night. Be aware that some medications contain caffeine (for example, diet pills).

Avoid alcohol. Although alcohol will make you drowsy, the effect is short lived and you will often wake up several hours later, unable to fall back asleep. Alcohol will also keep you from entering the deeper stages of sleep, where your body does most of its healing.

Make certain you are exercising regularly. Exercising for at least 30 minutes per day can improve your sleep. However, do not exercise too close to bedtime or it may keep you awake. Studies show exercising in the morning is the best if you can manage it.

Lose excess weight. Being overweight can increase your risk of sleep apnea, which can seriously impair your sleep.

Avoid foods you may be sensitive to. This is particularly true for sugar, grains, and pasteurized dairy. Sensitivity reactions can cause excess congestion, gastrointestinal upset, bloating and gas, as well as other problems.

By making these few changes you can significantly enhance your sleep experience. When it comes time to replace your old worn out mattress set, be sure to come to Mattress City. We’ll invest the time with you to select just the right mattress set to help you accomplish the goal of a perfect nights REST!

At Mattress City we will pay you $300 for your old king set, $200 for your old queen set, and $100 for any full or twin set

as a trade in when you purchase a new set at our everyday low prices, regardless of it’s condition! We donate them to help the homeless. Help us make a difference in our community by patronizing Mattress City. Come see us today!

What’s the BUZZ on Sunless Tanning?

We all love the warm sun. The sun's rays make us feel good, and in the short term, make us look good. But our love affair isn't a two way street: Exposure to sun causes most of the wrinkles and age spots on our faces. We often associate a glowing complexion with good health, but a tan obtained from being in the sun – or in a tanning booth – actually accelerates the effects of aging and increases your risk for developing skin cancer.

Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging. Over time, the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. We all struggle with the desire for a tan and fight that inner warning of exposing our skin to the sun's damaging rays, let’s face it --WE DON’T want to miss out on that sun-kissed glow!

In comes our HERO! Sunless Tanning! Sunless tanning is the safe, easy and long lasting way to keep your gorgeous, brown-glow year round! However, when you hear “sunless” you might conjure up images of Ross from friends or think of messy, smelly lotions and potions that streak or turn orange.. right? Well sun-less tanning has evolved in the last 5 years. Our team at Spa in the City has been trained by our lead make-up artist Tara Melum, having a back ground in make-up artistry she tirelessly found the right methods and solutions to ensure a beautiful, healthy, rich golden tan... so that every tan is perfection.

You may now be thinking YES! but how long does it last? Does it smell? Will it rub off on my clothes? Is it streak free? In answer to all

Sunless tanning really is the answer we have all been waiting for to achieve the perfect tan and take care of our skin in the process. We have lived in our home for 13 years and are the original owners. I have decorated and redecorated all the rooms in our home since our move in. Interior design is my profession so it has been a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. I still love all the rooms in my home. We gave the kitchen a facelift 5 years ago by replacing the tile countertops with granite and putting in stainless steel appliances. Instead of purchasing all new kitchen cabinets, I applied a mocha glaze finish over the existing ones. I have the cream color cabinets so I was able to make this change quite easily. They turned out beautiful; everyone thinks they are new cabinets. It is one of my interior design decorating tips I like to share with people. It was a very economical process that enhanced the kitchen tremendously.

The kitchen and the family room is one large open area for gathering and entertaining. The open space is ideal for family movie/TV viewing and of course getting together for meals. We try to have family dinners as much as possible for family time. It has become more challenging lately since my kids are college age.

To relax and read I enjoy visiting my living room (the featured room) which I have turned into a music/sitting room. It is not a very large area and I found when I had it as a formal living room we never used it. I feel it is much more functional and a great space for the baby grand piano. My daughter is the piano player and my husband desires to be the next. My son plays some too. Not formally trained, he creates his own music, which sounds rather lovely when he sits to play. The room is the first room viewed from the front entrance so it lends itself to set the stage for how the rest of the home flows with color and style. A splash of the same color throughout most of the rooms in the house is one way to blend the rooms together and give them a cohesive look. My style is more of an eclectic blend of European and soft contemporary. I usually don’t mix the two, but con-sidering it is my own home and being in the design business, I always like to challenge my creativity to come up with some-thing conversational and unique, but yet very functional.

If you are feeling inspired to give one of your rooms that extra lift, and not ready to purchase all new furnishings, a fresh coat of paint or a faux technique are inexpensive upgrades that will surely quench your desire for change. Rearrange your existing furniture and add a few new accessories. Now you have a fresh new look!

Gum Disease-

Periodontal disease is a much overlooked disease. This disease is seldom blamed for other health conditions. We now know that the bacterium that causes gum disease travels through our blood stream and can invade various organs in our body making exist-ing conditions worse. This doesn’t occur overnight but through time.

Gum disease is hereditary as it is along with other diseases. If periodontal (gum) disease lurks somewhere in your family tree, chances are, you may have inherited this unwanted gift.

Periodontal disease can carry emotional scars as well as causing physical damage. It’s difficult to hide a smile with a few missing teeth. Dental procedures can (in most cases) restore your smile; however, they can be expensive. If gum disease becomes too far advanced, it almost certainly results in the loss of teeth.

For those of us who just can’t afford the price of expensive den-tal procedures, alternative methods can be used to save the teeth that we have and restore our gums back to a healthy condition. Having dental checkups twice a year should be a priority. Treat-ing gum disease in its early stages is the best way to keep your smile.

Periodontal (gum) disease not only affects our oral health, it also plays a significant part in the overall health of our body.

* Approximately 95 percent of Americans with diabetes also have gum disease, due in part to an increased susceptibility to infections. Periodontal disease not only is a discomfort and risk factor for those with diabetes, but may make diabetes worse.

* Researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from heart disease as those with-out gum disease.

* The American Academy of Periodontology states that preg-nant women who have periodontal (gum) disease, may be seven times more likely to have a baby that is born too early and too small.

The Silent EnemyWhen brushing your teeth, do not use toothpaste that contains SLD (sodium lauryl sulfate.) SLD is a foaming agent that is used in commercial and industrial cleaners. It’s used in tooth-pastes to produce foam, which floats away food particles. It also is a big irritant to our gums.

Mouthwashes are great for eliminating bacteria that brushing cannot reach. However, do not use a mouthwash that contains alcohol. The reason being that alcohol will dry the saliva up leaving the mouth defenseless against bacteria causing germs which thrive in a dry environment.

Gum disease can and will invade our bodies and it will continue to progress unless we treat and prevent it from happening.Article Source: www.wellnessarticlelibrary.com
