O ctober has the distinction of being when the leaves turn, fall-ing from the trees, disintegrating into a natural type of nutri-ent for the trees and bushes. The cycle of life begins again as the tree or bush “hibernates” through the long winter

months and then bursts forth in spring with the flowering trees and bushes. The sun of summer warms and nurtures the plants, and the cycle begins again. We usually enjoy that cycle of life, knowing that the starkness of winter will be replaced with the lush green foliage of spring-summer, and warmer weather that enhances our living. As summer fades into fall, the leaves quickly begin to shrivel, shrink, and fall from the trees, and a new cycle begins.

The same type of cycle happens in our human lives. The benchmarks are different, and we don’t go through a death experi-ence every year, but we do have patterns and touch stones through-out our lives. When someone dies particularly early, we talk about their life being “cut short.” When a child is born there are some clear goals that need to be achieved. Rolling over, sitting up, and finally walking consume the first year of a baby. Talking in a conversational way is benchmark for a toddler; and then beginning to assert individu-alism takes over as a child begins school. The next several points: declaring a belief in God and joining a church is seen as the beginning of accepting self-responsibility and goes along with receiv-ing a driver’s license, achieving relationships first with your neighbors and later with other individuals, graduation from high school, the col-lege years with graduation, and then master’s level education, and becoming employed, selecting the person you want to share your life with through marriage, creating a family of your own … and the cycle goes forward.

We are at the point where we have experienced some of the ”life-cycle” in our congregation.

October is the time when we see the beauty and majesty of God’s creation. The smell of October is unique, and the atmosphere it creates is filled with energy. This October our church is preparing for some new life. We are at the point where we have experienced some of the ”life-cycle” in our congregation. Several folks have moved and left our community going to live closer to their children or their siblings placing us in a position where saying good bye is diffi-cult, but we understand the life cycle. In the Bible we hear about the Vineyard where the owner kept sending more and more people to field to work supporting the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16).

What is critical is that in our church we need to recognize the life cy-cle as we change. It is time to welcome the new life which will com-pliment our present foliage supporting it with all of our re-sources. We know there will be some new plants, trees, and bush-es that need our love and support, and they too shall “burst forth” in the spring cycle at the church.

All Saints Sunday: Another part of the cycle is saying good-bye. October 29, we will celebrate “All Saints Sunday” with a special service that remembers those who have left our earthly life and moved into life eternal. A bell will be sounded, a candle will be light-ed, their names will be read, and we will remember them for all that they were in this life time. Please let the Church Office know if there are people in your family who have died since last October (2016) to October 31 of 2017 (Call 315-637-4413 or e-mail [email protected]). We will need:

n the name of the person who died,

n what relation they are to you, and

n the date of death. A digital picture would be excellent so we can project their image on the screen as their name is read. In the service we will give thanks to God for their lives. (Please e-mail a jpeg image to the Church Office or bring us a photo we can copy, which will be returned to you. We need the images by October 23.) New Community Worship Service: Finally, our church is planning on providing a new community service so more people can reach Christ. The Resort Lifestyle Com-munities – Towne Center at 3900 Medical Center Drive (in front of the Northeast Medical Center) has invited us to provide worship there each week. Beginning the first Sunday in November, we will provide a worship service at the facility in their Theater. It will be a service that will mirror most of what is happening in worship in the church on Sunday morning. This service is open to anyone in the greater community. The service will begin at 1:30 pm. You are now welcome to attend any one (or more) of the three services we will be hosting each week. We are off and running for fall. Please come and be part of our community that reaches out and serves the world through small and humble steps. I look forward to seeing you in worship!

Peace,

Bob

Under 6 yrs. old: free The United Meth-odist Women’s group is hosting its annual Chick-en & Biscuit Din-ner in Homer Hall on November 4.

The menu includes: chicken gra-vy over biscuits, mashed potatoes, fresh squash, coleslaw and a slice of pumpkin or apple pie. Yum! CRAFT SALE & BAKED GOODS: There will be a Craft Sale this year during the UMW Chicken and Bis-cuit Dinner, along with assorted delicious baked goods, condi-ments, perhaps some jam and jel-ly, and a variety of Christmas dec-orations. Also, a display of "gently used" household and jewelry items at great prices (or, make an offer!).

DONATIONS: The UMW seeks your help in donating to this UMW fund raiser through contributing any crafts you might have, baked items (small loaves of bread, cook-ies, cup cakes, pies) candy, as well as those glorified garage sale bargains you are happy to share. All funds received during this event go directly to local Mis-sions. Please contact Lois Vitale (315-656-8927) with any questions or any craft or food items you are willing to donate. Items may be left in the Church Office marked for the Craft Sale, by Friday, Novem-ber 3rd. Thank you for helping make this evening's event a huge success.

6th Annual Pumpkin Sale continues through October 15th Our 6th Annual Pumpkin Sale will continue on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, (including Monday, the 9th, Columbus Day) through October 15th. All money collect-

ed for the sale will go towards the operating budget of FUMC.

Thank you to all who have helped by picking pumpkins or selling. We had good weather and a good turnout for pumpkin picking at Jeff Haine’s field. We picked 340 pumpkins, hosed them clean and piled everything into three trucks. They brighten the front lawn at FUMC where they are now carefully organized by size and price.

Please sign up for a 2-hour shift: If you have a 2 hour time period that you could volunteer to help sell pumpkins, please sign up on Sun-days in Narthex, or call Linda Saunders (315 -656-3552) or Judy Bus-key (315-637-9411). Thank you all very much for working to make this annual event a success!

Special Request TO ALL CHURCH MEMBERS:

L ast year (2016) our Budget ended with a ($11,209.00) deficit, which was covered by FUMC’s Cash Reserve. This year (2017) the Budg-et had a faith factor of $4,649.00 which we adjusted in March 2017, as we could see that we would not make it up, which zeroed out the

Cash Reserve account.

As of 8/13/17 we have a deficit of ($12,319.00), which the Finance Com-mittee feels should be addressed now. As of 8/13/17, we budgeted $199,451.00 giving units; however, we only received $191,214.00, short $8,237.00, which is the largest part of our shortfall.

To try to correct the shortfall, we are asking each family, if possible, to give a special gift of $100.00 to decrease our deficit. Funds will be used for operating expenses only. “Special Gift BUDGET 2017” envelopes will be enclosed in your bulletin — and you can keep tabs on our pro-gress by checking out the tally board in the narthex. If you have any questions feel free to call me at the church at 315-637-4413.

Thank you, Linda Saunders, FUMC Treasurer

RECENT ACTIVITIES - From the OUTREACH COMMITTEE:

First, let us say many thanks for your help this summer collecting various items. Here's what we are doing with them:

n Pill Bottles – Four large boxes were cleaned, packed and sent to Mat-thew 25: Ministries organization in Cincinnati, Ohio for shipment to clinics overseas in developing countries. Members of UM Women and Outreach joined in this venture. [Note: This collection has ended.]

n Flood Buckets (for cleanup after major disasters). On Oct. 1, we will pack 20 buckets to send to the UMCOR warehouse to replenish the stock. This is a cooperative project of UM Women, Outreach and our Sunday School. [Adult Forum will have special UMCOR information on Oct. 1]

n Continuing Collectibles per Needs: See boxes in the Narthex. - Backpacks – for homeless Syracuse people. - Returnable Soda bottles & Cans – These also may be dropped off at FM Returnables, Manlius; ask for credit to our account as Fayetteville U. Methodist Church. (Many Nickles go towards Missions.)

n Sandwiches: We continue to gather the last Saturday morning each month to make sandwiches and add cookies to deliver to the Samaritan Center (in downtown Syracuse) for homeless people. Your gifts of peanut butter, jam (needed most) and cookies provide good energy in various ways! Also a big need: 4 doz. Cookies per person (individually bagged ahead). Please let Beth Savery or Sarah Cooke know if you can make some to add to our delivery each month.

n Fayetteville Festival: We again participated in this community event to introduce our church to people. Many thanks to Harry Gill, who coordi-nated this important activity.

Your gifts, through these projects and with God's help, are spreading

hope and life to many places. ~ Bob O'Connor, Chair

OUTREACH

Greetings from

Bright Beginnings

Nursery School! We

are all settling in, cre-

ating a sense of community both within our classrooms and with-

in the larger Bright Beginnings family. We are incredibly grateful

to have Kim Leonard join our team. She has worked at Bright

Beginnings in a number of capacities and is also the Mom of two

of our alumni, Dominic and Sophie. We are blessed by her ener-

gy, creativity and love of our Bright Beginnings program.

Annual Mom’s Day: In October, we will host our annual Mom’s

Day. We invite the children to bring their Mom’s to school on a

Saturday morning to teach them about preschool. The Moms

enjoy sharing a sampling of a typical day at Bright Beginnings —

they make and share a snack, they play table games, they make

a craft and share in Story Time.

Fun October Days: In October, we also go on our annual field

trip to the pumpkin farm with the four year old classes. Last year

we discovered Springside Farm in Fabius, what a gem! Other

highlights of October include Red Apple Day (we make our fa-

mous applesauce-yum!), Orange Pumpkin Day and we enjoy our

first visits from Mr. Song Flower, Miss Karen from the Manlius

Library and Miss Kristen from the Fayetteville Free Library.

Yoga Classes: Bright Beginnings is excited to offer Yoga

classes this fall. It is our hope to add yoga to our full curriculum

next year on a regular basis. We will also be welcoming back

The Ballet and Dance Center for Creative Movement Classes.

Looking for a Piano Player: We are currently looking for some-

one to come and play piano for music time with the four year

olds. Our wonderful volunteer “Mrs. L” continues to provide mu-

sic on a weekly basis for the three year olds. If you or someone

you know plays piano and is interested in volunteering about 20

minutes a month, please let us know. Our song selection is fairly

simple preschool fair, nothing intimidating.

Enrollment: We will begin enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year in mid-November. Please contact Lisa Pilewski at [email protected] if you have questions about this or want in-

formation about volunteering for our monthly music class with the four year olds. Fall is a busy and exciting time at Bright Be-ginnings. We are so grateful for the support we receive from the

FUMC community.

Early Response Team (ERT) training scheduled for Nov. 18

T he next Upper New York Early Response Team (ERT) training is Nov. 18, 2017 at Alexander United Methodist Church,

10540 Main St, Alexander, N.Y. 14005 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

UMCOR's ERT training equips individ-uals to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disaster. When disaster strikes, Early Response Teams (ERTs) fill a specific need to clean out flood-damaged homes, remove debris, place tarps on homes, and otherwise help to prevent further damage. The work pro-vides a caring Christian presence in times of disaster. The ERT badge is issued by UMCOR to applicants over the age of 18 after successful comple-tion of an ERT course and background check. Badges are valid for 3 years. The Early Response Team course is facilitated by Brian Greenwald for this 8-hour course.

Trained by UMCOR, Brian is an experi-enced ERT responder. Questions should be directed to Brian at: [email protected]. An ERT training cost of $25.00 in-cludes the ERT manual, background check, supplies, and badge.

Payment is by check written to "Clifton Springs UMC" with "ERT" written on the memo line. Bring check to the train-ing. Training is potentially cancelled if less than 12 registrants by Nov. 11.

Noah's Ark : Everything I need to know, I learned from

Noah's Ark.

ONE: Don't miss the boat.

TWO: Remember that we are all in the same boat!

THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.

FOUR: Stay fit. When you're 80 years old, some-one may ask you to do something really big.

FIVE: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.

SIX: Build your future on high ground.

SEVEN: For safety's sake, travel in pairs.

EIGHT: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.

NINE: When you're stressed, float awhile.

TEN: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.

ELEVEN: No matter the storm, there's always a rainbow waiting . ~ SHARED BY Lois Vitale

Carole’s Tree

H ave you noticed some activity on the lawn near the Office entrance? The last week of September a beautiful pink-purple flowering Hydrangea tree was plant-ed in honor and memory of Carole Coon. This lovely tree, petite like Carole, is a continual reminder of Carole and her deep devotion to God and FUMC. This

living memorial was important to her family, knowing Carole's passion for gardening and greenery. Contributions to the Memorial Fund in Carole's memory provided this gift and more memorials to be finalized. Thank you everyone for your part in keeping Carole's memory alive in our hearts and thoughts.
