2.) God’s Joy is Expressed: Some, however, made

fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine.” Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the

morning! Acts 2:13-15

What were they doing that caused these mockers to

accuse the believers of being drunk? I suspect there

was such a joy that came upon the Christians that

they were dancing, jumping, shouting and laughing.

In short, I think they looked drunk. The Holy Spirit is

a Spirit of joy and when he brings breakthrough, he

brings joy!

3.) God’s Will is Revealed: `In the last days, God

says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

Acts 2:17

What is the purpose of dreams and visions?

Throughout the book of Acts, God speaks in visions,

dreams and prophesy to reveal his will. When there

is spiritual breakthrough, we become more focused

on his will rather than our will.

4.) God’s Son is Exalted: God has raised this

Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has

poured out what you now see and hear. Acts 2:32-33

When Peter stands to explain what was going on, he

centers his message on Jesus. After the

breakthrough of Pentecost, the disciples are no

longer interested in exalting themselves, now they

only want to see Jesus exalted. Exalting Jesus is at

the heart of a church that experiences spiritual

breakthrough.

5.) God’s People are Saved: Repent and be

baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. …about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Acts 2:38-41

I trust you have been joining me in praying our

church prayer every day. The first part of our prayer

is for spiritual breakthrough. What happens when

spiritual breakthrough comes? I am currently

reading “From Pentecost to the Present” by Jeff

Oliver. These books detail spiritual breakthroughs

throughout church history. Nearly all

breakthroughs have similar elements that were seen

at the first breakthrough that took place on

Pentecost. Consider what happened at that

breakthrough as described in Acts 2.

1.) God’s Wonders Are Declared: …we hear them

declaring the wonders of God… Acts 2:11

To declare God’s wonders is to praise God! With

spiritual breakthrough, praise and worship rises to

another level. This does not mean the style of our

worship changes. God’s wonders are declared in the

reciting of ancient creeds, and in old traditional

hymns as well as contemporary worship. Spiritual

breakthrough brings new life and vitality to whatever

worship style we prefer.

Our Church Staff

That is a 2500% increase in one day!! When you read the book of Acts, it is clear that the church was

constantly growing in numbers. One of the surest signs of spiritual breakthrough in a church is people

become disciples of Jesus.

6.) God’s Power is Displayed: Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous

signs were done by the apostles. Acts 2:43

Once the disciples experienced the spiritual breakthrough of Pentecost, amazing things began to hap-

pen. They began to do the things that Jesus did....healing the sick, raising the dead, casting out de-

mons etc.

When we ask God to unleash the power of the Holy Spirit for spiritual breakthrough, we are really ask-

ing God for these six things to be present in our church. Oliver’s book describes these very things hap-

pening in spiritual breakthroughs all through church history. Therefore I am confident that God can do

these very things here at FUMC as we pray together, “Father, unleash the power of the Holy Spirit to

bring spiritual breakthrough in my life, in our church family and in our community.”

DISTRICT PRAYER REQUEST

We are praying through the list of all the United Methodist Churches and pastors in our dis-

trict. In October we have been praying for Ohio Health (Pastors Keith Vesper and Kristen

Langstraat), Riverside (Pastors David Cady and Herman Dick), St. Luke’s (Pastor Kevin Orr),

Raymond UMC - (Rev. Sara McSwords), Lewis Center UMC – (Rev. Tom Hanover and Rev.

Phil Rode), Capitol Area Community Ministries – (Rev. Karen Cook and Ginny Shimrock), the

CACM committee members, Ohio Wesleyan University, Church of the Messiah – (Rev. Jim

Wilson, Rev. Kathy Currier, Rev. Andy Burns, Rev. Linda Scott, Rev. Sharon Beattie), and

Jerome UMC – (Rev. David Bridgman, Rev. Donna Montgomery).

Pastor Letter Continued

The vision of First United Methodist Church incorporates both

the Great Commandments and the Great Commission. Jesus

said the greatest commandments were to love God and then to

love others. The great commission calls us to go into all the

world. If we want to transform the world, we must begin by

picking up the servant’s towel and loving God and all people.

This new vision is rooted in four core values.

How do we take these core values and move forward to make our vision a reality?

The process or system for implementing this Vision is our Strategy. These images

show four distinct strategies. As you can see two take place primarily inside the

walls of the church and two are outside the walls of the church. Here is a brief

overview of each strategy:

Engage: We don't wait for people to come to us. We engage with our neighbors, coworkers,

friends, family, and strangers to let them know they are loved, valued, and worth our time.

Connect: We don't walk alone as we experience Jesus. We connect people to help them grow,

do life, and do ministry together. When someone sets foot in our church they will be warmly

welcomed and received. The church is a place for friendship and belonging, not judgement. It

is a place where people are loved and encounter our Savior and Lord exactly where they are.

Equip: We want all people to expand their knowledge of

who God is and how he wants to use them in everyday

life. Through bible study, training, mentoring, classes,

and experiences we will prepare people to be joyful life-

long disciples that reproduce other disciples.

Send: The world needs to hear the good news of Jesus

and he has given us the joy and responsibility to go and

make disciples. We are sent out to our own spheres of

influence: homes, schools, offices, neighborhoods, and to

the ends of the earth.

Church News &Notes 6th ANNUAL HOLY SPIRIT SEMINAR:

Holy Fire: Holiness and the Holy Spirit

December 1, 2017 | Dayton, Ohio

Amidst days of great uncertainty and adver-

sity, God is calling the Church to repent and

turn to God’s love. This call is a call to God’s

holiness. God desires to deliver us — from

sin, from death and from the chains that

bind us. As we respond to God’s call, we will

rediscover liberty and peace in God’s holy

presence.

Join United Theological Seminary and Al-

dersgate Renewal Ministries at the 6th An-

nual Holy Spirit Seminar on Friday, Dec. 1,

2017, as we cry out for a fresh baptism of ho-

ly fire. Nothing less than God’s presence, de-

scribed by John Wesley as “holy love,” will

sustain us and keep our hearts burning for

Christ. Visit www.united.edu/holy-spirit to

Church News &Notes FALL FOOD DRIVE

Families are gather-

ing to renew their ties

and to gobble up tur-

key, dressing, and ap-

ple pies. Yet, some

neighbors may have

pantries that are

bare. They live on a

"shoestring" budget

and feel despair. Our

fall food drive is a

great way to show we

care. Keitha and Gary Simpson, operators

of the Marysville Food Pantry, relate that

the number of families seeking food assis-

tance continues to increase. They appreci-

ate any donations, so let's be generous!

Needed Items: canned fruit and vegeta-

bles, tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce,

Hamburger Helper, macaroni and

cheese, stuffing mix, rice, canned meats

(tuna, chicken, spam, etc.), peanut but-

ter, powdered milk, cooking oil, condi-

ments and coffee.

Please NO GLASS and check expiration

dates on your donated items.

Paper bags will be handed out after each

service on November 12th and 19th. Please

fill the bags and return them to the BFLC

closet near the gym by 2:00pm on Tuesday,

November 21st. The Quake kids will be

shopping and adding their food items as

they repack our bags for easier transport-

ing. Thanks, Quake!! We will take the

filled bags to the food pantry on November

22nd. Trucks, vans, or car drivers are need-

ed to transport the food. It is a quick and

fun trip around the corner. Call Joan at

937-644-9555 if you can help with the trans-

portation.

Methodist Creative Preschool

It’s hard to believe at the writing of this article we are already 5 weeks into the pre-

school/pre-kindergarten year! We have 98 kiddos to love on this year, 44 3-year olds and

54 4-year olds. WHEW! We’ve accomplished a lot in this short amount of time, including

a fun-filled field trip to Leeds Farm which has been a field trip tradition of MCP for

many years.

We have also had 2 chapel days. Once a month the children, teachers and their parents

join together in the Sanctuary to share a Bible story, activities, songs and prayer. We

are happy to have Mrs. Peggy, Mrs. Trudy and Mrs. Shelley team together as guest pre-

senters during chapel time this year. We have many God sightings during these special

times. God is growing His precious children in so many ways, academically and spiritually.

YAY GOD!

News From Our Finance Team Offering Envelopes 2018 – Many people use online giving or automatic bill pay now, so the need for envelopes has

evolved. Therefore, you will see these changes to envelopes in 2018:

Envelopes will not be dated beginning in 2018, but they will continue to have your pre-printed name and

envelope number. If the date is crucial to your tithing system, simply add the date in the space provided.

We will mail weekly envelopes prior to the beginning of each quarter. You will receive 13 envelopes per

quarter, plus an envelope for initial offering* in the first quarter.

We will now mail monthly envelopes at the end of December. You will receive 13 envelopes (yes, one ex-

tra), and an envelope for initial offering*.

Envelopes will never “expire” because they are not dated. I will discontinue mailings if I notice you have

not used many envelopes.

The Post Office will not forward envelopes because they are mailed bulk rate.

You can still use old, dated envelopes; just cross off the old date.

*Initial offering defrays the cost of envelopes, which is approximately $5.00/set annually.

If you do not receive envelopes and want some, please let me know. Alternatively, tell me to stop sending them if you

do not use them. You can still use the white “pew” envelopes or even throw your money in loose, but I do a better job

recording contributions with pre-printed envelopes. Please contact me by phone, e-mail or text with changes or any

questions regarding contributions.

News From Our Finance Team COMING SOON — Commitment Sunday – November 19, 2017

What is Commitment Sunday? Commitment Sunday is a chance to participate fully in the ministries of FUMC by

making a pledge to support the 2018 operating budget. Paul challenges us to help the weak, reminding that Jesus

said “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). We will be able to demonstrate through our pledge

whether we have taken this teaching to heart.

How does Commitment Sunday Work? For two weeks in early November, Pastor Aaron will help us prayerfully con-

sider our pledges as he preaches on John Wesley’s Simple Rules for Money . . . “Earn all you can. Save all you can.

Give all you can.”

We will be encouraged by testimonies of others whose stories will challenge us to ask, “What is God calling me

to give?”

During the Commitment Sunday service on Nov. 19th, everyone will be given a confidential Pledge Card that is

turned in toward the end of worship (advance copies are available at the office or information centers).

Your commitment will help us set a realistic budget for 2018, allowing us to Love God and All People for the

Transformation of the World.

What if I don’t feel comfortable with Commitment Sunday? Participation is voluntary. The procedure is done in

such a way that no one will feel embarrassment should they choose not to fill out a card.

All commitments are strictly confidential.

No home solicitation will be done, but we will send a follow up letter to our members and regular attendees who

cannot attend on Nov. 19th.

How much should I pledge? It is up to each person to search their heart and seek God’s direction to decide how

much to give. The Bible speaks of tithing, which has long been understood to mean to pay a tenth of one’s income.

The sermons, testimonies and literature will help you make a decision that fits for you and your family.

What if I make a pledge and my situation changes? We recognize that financial situations change. If you find your-

self unable to fulfill your pledge, you may contact our Financial Secretary to adjust it.

Should my children pledge separately? They certainly may! Once your children understand the value of money, they

may want to join you in making an annual pledge. They can receive offering envelopes and giving statements just

like you do.

What if I can’t be there on Nov. 19th? If you cannot attend, you may put your pledge card in the offering plate on

another Sunday or return it to the church office (Attention Carol Reed, Financial Secretary). Cards are available in

the office and information centers. You may also send your pledge by email to [email protected] .

Commitment Sunday -- Nov. 19, 2017

Earn. Save. Give.

“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the

weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give

than to receive.’” Acts 20:35

Church, I/we make the following financial commitment for the 2018 operating budget:

November Focus on the Family

Dear Parents,

Teaching our children to say “thank you” is on our parental top ten to do list! We actually

start teaching our children to say “thank you” before they can speak clearly. We dig in our

heels and patiently wait for it, “What do you say?” or “Remember to say thank you!” It often

comes out, “Tank Q” or “Fanks”! We do this because we want our children to be grateful and

full of manners with family, teachers and strangers. We recognize that it is a trait that has to

be nurtured as they grow. As Christian parents, we also have to nurture in our children a

grateful heart towards God! We need to be intentional about teaching our children to thank

God for our blessings. We have to point out the blessings and encourage them to give praise.

One way to do that is to memorize as a family Bible verses that speak of giving thanks to God!

Below are five great verses to teach your children. Since there are 5 weeks in November, why

not challenge your family to memorize a verse each week! Maybe you could recite them at the

breakfast or dinner table….or driving from place to place. Enjoy this time together and teach

spiritual gratitude to your children! Have Fun! Pastor Peggy

PARENTS: Are you finding it hard to plan a night out, or…. a night in with your kids

out? If your answer is yes, then we have just the thing for you!

The Methodist youth group, Quake, holds a Parents’ Night Out about once a month during the school year.

Here are the details:

Location: First United Methodist Church

Time: 6:00pm-10:00pm *You are welcome to pick your children up at anytime during the night. They do not have to stay until 10:00.

Cost: $20 for one child and $5 for each additional child in the family.

Dates: Oct 20, Dec 1, Jan 19, Feb 9, March 2, April 13, May 11

Where does the money go?: All money raised is put into a Missions fund account and used to pay for any trips or events that the youth participate in.

The children are divided into the following groups:

1) Infant - 3 year olds ~ These kids are in the nursery all night. We have 1 adult with 1 or 2 youth, depending on how many kids we have signed up for the night.

2) Preschool ~ These kids are in one of the preschool rooms upstairs from 6-8:00 playing with the kitchen toys, coloring, puzzles, maybe doing a craft, and having snack. At 8:00 they come down to the gym and pret-ty much just run around and scream J or play group games. At 8:00 they join the school age group in the cafe for a snack and to watch a movie until parent pick up time at 10:00. Depending on the size of the group, we will have 1 adult with 2-4 youth.

3) School Age ~ These kids are in the gym and cafe from 6-8:00. We have games and crafts for them to do in the cafe, and they do their own thing in the gym, which is what I like to call controlled chaos :) Most of the kids are running around for the whole 2 hours. At 8:00 they will go into the café for a snack and then at 8:30 we start the movie. We have 1 or 2 adults with 4 or 5 youth, depending on how many families have signed up for the night.

If this sounds like something you would like to take advantage of, just complete the registration on the back of this page and turn it into the church office. Please contact Kendra Ingle at 937-707-8022 or email her

at [email protected] with any questions.

In order to have the appropriate number of volunteers to watch the kids, and be-cause space is limited, you MUST be signed up 48 hours BEFORE the night of

the event.

SOS TRIP Who: Students Exiting 7th-12th grade in 2018

What: Construction mission trip to Service Over Self

When: June 9-16, 2018

Where: Memphis, TN

Why: To serve the community of Binghampton through construction, and grow closer to God

How Much: $250 (or $350 for late registration)

Service Over Self is an organization whose mission is to provide safer, warmer, and dryer

homes for the people in their neighborhood of Binghampton. This community has a majority of

low-income families, most of which have many practical needs that they are unable to meet by

themselves.

Our role at SOS is to serve this community through a variety of home repairs including roof-

ing, demolition, remodeling, painting, dry walling, and siding. We get split up into small

groups and assigned a work site to be at for the entire week. We not only serve with our

hands, but also our hearts by loving the people that we meet throughout the week. It’s an

amazing week of work, worship, and fun. Although you are serving selflessly, you are blessed

so much in return! It’s definitely an opportunity that you won’t want to miss!

Cost: The cost for this trip is $250. We are asking for $125 deposit when registering and the

remaining $125 due by May 1. In order to ensure that we are the best stewards or our re-

sources, registration will be open for this trip from October 5 – December 1. Any student who

registers after these dates will be charge $350 for the trip and will be placed on a waiting list

if no extra spots are available. Once on the waiting list and you are contacted that there are

extra spots are available, we ask that you pay the $125 deposit and the remaining amount of

$225 by May 1.

Registration: Go to www.quakeyouth.org to register. Click on the “Register for An Event” tab

at the top. We will have open registration from October 5 to December 1 based on the spots

we have pre-purchased. If registration is full, please register on the “waiting list” to reserve a

spot if any open up. If we have extra spots, we will contact you and let you know that you have

been moved from the waiting list to going on the trip.

Fundraisers: We encourage that each family participate in two Parent’s Night Out event and

one full day of UPWARD (can be split up) to help fundraise for this trip. As always, scholar-

ships are available for students who are not financially able to participate. Please do not hesi-

tate to contact Mark Confer if this is the case.

Paperwork: We will be sent out to families that have registered once available. This paper-

work is due with your final payment on May 1.

If you have to back out of the trip: You are responsible to either find someone to replace

you OR to pay the full amount the church spends on a spot, which is $360. Once you have

found this person, please communicate this to Mark Confer.
