Wiggly Field, The Meadows off-leash dog park, recently received some fun additions thanks to an Eagle Scout project by local Boy Scout and Meadows resident, 16 year old Aaron Chavez.

Aaron Chavez, of Boy Scout Troop 780, presented a plan to the The Meadows Neighborhood Board of Governors to in-stall an agility course at Wiggly Field at the dog park located just north of Paint-brush Park. Aaron planned and raised the

funds for the project, and it was completed on August 8 and 9.

Aaron was able to raise enough money from private donations, as well as local businesses to support adding the dog amenities to the park. The generous donations for the obstacle course stations were received from Dr. Deb from Brooklyn Vet Clinic, Cherished Companions, Buddy Cox Insurance Company and Winwater of Castle Pines, which donated the 16’ plastic culvert piping that was used for the tunnel obstacle stations. The Meadows Neighborhood is very appreciative of the donations, and the partnership with local businesses to provide funding for this great Eagle Project.

Fall is a favorite time of the year for those who enjoy their outdoor landscapes. As temperatures cool and the days shorten, it’s pleasant to be in the yard and garden for both you and your plants. Tree and shrub growth comes to a close and pest and insect problems become more sporadic.

Now is an excellent time to consider new plantings for your landscape. Cooler air and soil temperatures put less stress on newly installed plants. Fall water demands are less while roots proliferate in the cooler soils. Many local nurseries will have discounted plants for fall. Consider planting small trees that could be in stock, as they will establish faster, and transplant earlier.

Needle bearing (evergreen trees) respire or lose water through their foliage during the winter season. For this reason, evergreens are best planted earlier in the year. Trees and shrubs should be planted prior to the first of November. Bulbs should be in the ground by October 15. When planting in the fall, wood mulches and winter watering will be needed for success. Mulching and winter watering will increase a new tree’s chances of survival. After planting a tree, water it deeply. Mulch trees and shrubs with a three inch layer of wood chips, pine needles or a similar material, mulch to at least a foot beyond the area of the tree’s root ball. Water the tree again to settle the mulch.

Here is a quick Fall checklist to keep you on the right path and save you dollars in replacing systems due to lack of winterization, or preparing your landscaping for the cold months ahead.

SeptemberEase up on watering; plants need time to harden off before the cold sets in.

Fall is the best time to fertilize lawns. Make the final application of nitrogen while the grass is still green. Apply one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of cool season grasses. Warm season grasses do not require any fertilization in the fall. September is also a good month to plant shrubs and deciduous trees. They will require extra care and watering, but will put on a lot of root growth if planted early in the fall.

OctoberUsing twine, tie up trees and shrubs that may break with heavy snow. Take time to clean up f lowerbeds and vegetable gardens. Mow the turf with a catcher to collect fallen leaves and winterize by draining and storing hoses; blow out all sprinkler systems including subsurface and drip lines (see more info below).

three years, should have tree wrap applied before the 15th of the month. Based on the current drought situations, consider winter-watering of trees during the winter months. Make notes of garden plants you observed during the fall that had the color you need for your yard and those that were successful in your yard during last season. Additionally, take note of the areas that need an extra plant for next year-this will help you avoid over-purchasing next spring.

Winterization starts now! Check filters, blower and blower compartments, belts, burners, pilots as well as the ducts. Routine maintenance will increase the life of your furnace. * Filters. Check your filter monthly and either clean or

replace it. A clogged or dirty filter reduces the amount of airf low over the exchanger. This is the most neglected item in furnace maintenance.

* Blower and Blower Compartments. Turn off the electric power to the furnace, clean, and remove the lint and dust from the blower and compartment.

* Belts. If the blower is belt-driven, check the belt for wear and tension. Adjust the belt enough to prevent it from slipping.

* Burner/Pilot. Burner and pilot should be cleaned annually. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for lighting the pilot.

* Distribution System. Check all ducts for leaks and repair them with duct tape. Ducts should be insulated in unheated areas. Wrap batt insulation around the ducts and seal with duct tape. Be sure not to block any air intake openings.

Sprinklers and irrigation systems need Winterization as weather turns cold. Blowing out sprinkler systems in the fall, prior to the colder months when low temperatures cause water to freeze, can save thousands of dollars in damage and unquantifiable distress for the homeowner. Make sure your home’s outdoor irrigation system is properly cleared of water, turned off and protected from freezing temperatures.

A proper, professional sprinkler system winterization includes:• Compressed air removes all moisture from the lines and

other critical components.• Allelectricalcomponentsarethoroughlychecked.• Makenoteofanypotentialneededrepairsthatwillneedto

be on before starting your system up in the spring.

Sprinkler lines that do not get winterized can freeze in extremely low temperatures, which are common in Colorado winter months. Frozen water in your irrigation system can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home and property, and require some or all of the irrigation system to be repaired or replaced. Irrigation system winterization needs to be done before the temperatures start to drop, so don’t delay!

Getting outdoors and experiencing the last of the warm weather and beautiful fall colors seems to be a top priority for most this time of year. For those of us that live in The Meadows, we are lucky to have a place that offers amazing fall colors and a lovely hiking trail, just a few miles south. Dawson Butte Open Space is a gem any time of year, but is especially glorious in the fall. In 2004, Douglas Land Conservancy (DLC), a local nonprofit land trust, began working with the owners of Dawson Butte to protect 829 acres of open space through a conservation easement. This ease-ment ensures that the open space will be protected in perpetuity by DLC for future generations to enjoy. The beautiful landscape surrounding the trails has been protected for its natural resources and recreational values that benefit the public.

Dawson Butte Open Space Trail is an easy to moderate five mile loop trail over rolling terrain that travels through mostly forested areas with some open meadows. The trail offers views of Pike’s Peak, Devil’s Head, and Dawson Butte. There is no access to the top of the butte. Wildlife that you may encounter include, bears, elk, deer, and mountain lions, along with many varieties of small mammals and birds. The trail is used for hiking, horseback riding (with an optional bridle path containing over 60 horse jumps), mountain biking, and even snowshoeing. Dogs are welcome on leash. No motorized vehicles are allowed. The trailhead has a beautiful picnic area, so bring a lunch and make a day of it!

Meadows Family Home Devastated By Lightning…Community Comes TogetherOn July 21, around 3:00 p.m., Meadows residents, Kiara Horan and Jonathan Jones’ home was struck by a bolt of lightning. In a f lash, their home was completely destroyed. While Kiara and Jonathan were not home, one of their beloved cats of more than 10 years did not survive. The home has since been condemned and the couple and their other pets have been living in temporary housing. To make this difficult time a little easier on the couple, The Meadows community members and local businesses have gen-erously offered to help. Macy’s, The Outlets of Castle Rock, Holiday Inn of Castle Rock, and so many individuals have donated gift cards, money, and other various items to ease the burden on this family. The Meadows will soon be setting up a Sign Up page for items that Kiara and Jonathan will need in the upcoming months as they try to rebuild their lives. Please check Meadowslink.com or email [email protected] for more details or ways to help.

If you’re interested in donating monetarily, a Relief Fund Account has been setup with ANB Bank. You can make a donation in either Jonathan Jones or Kiara Horan’s names.Account # 2000003023 Routing Number 107001232

upcoming Chemical Collection EventCastle Rock roundups give residents chance to rid homes of hazardous chemical.

The final Douglas County chemical roundup of 2015, sponsored by Tri-County Health, is slated for Sept. 12 in Castle Rock.

Is your garage turning into a storage area for unwanted paint containers, old automotive f luids, tires, used batteries or burned-out light bulbs? If you answered yes to any of those items, then mark your calendar.

On Sept. 12, the Tri-County Health Department will host its final two chemical roundups of 2015 for Douglas County resi-dents, offering a means to properly dispose of household waste that could otherwise contaminate people’s homes, the local water supply, air and landfills.

All roundup participants are asked to show proof of residence in Douglas County and pay $25 when dropping off chemicals. There will also be a free drop-and-swap area on site where people can take household cleaners, paint, car wax, antifreeze, fertilizer and garden products still in their original containers.Accepted items to drop off include house and garden chemicals, automotive f luids, f luorescent light bulbs, fuels, propane tanks between one and 20 pounds, vehicle and household batter-

ies, items contain-ing mercury, car and pickup truck tires off the rim, and oil-based paint and paint products.

Items that will not be accepted include business and com-mercial waste, radioactive waste, electronic waste (computers, TVs, etc.), explosive waste, smoke detectors, waste containing asbestos, compressed gases other than propane, tractor tires, scrap metal and medical waste.

The final event of 2015, Sept. 12 at 175 Kellog Court in Castle Rock. Both roundups are scheduled for 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

January 19, 2009 Dear IREA Smoky Hill Member: You will recall that approximately one and one-half years ago, IREA notified you that we were initiating comprehensive underground cable testing and replacement because of the level of interruptions in the area due to worn-out and defective cable. We tested and replaced thousands of feet of cable. Now, because of a slow down of new connects, we are able to commit more resources toward improving system reliability in the Smoky Hill area. In 2009, our main emphasis will be in Saddle Rock Ranches. We recognize that the level of construction activity may impact traffic in the area, but we expect that the benefit of preventing outages outweighs the traffic disruption to customers. Since we are not testing in the other Smoky Hill areas this year, if those customers who live outside of Saddle Rock Ranches experience blinks and outages, please make sure to call our Operations Department at 303-688-3100, ext. 250, to report the problem. We have heard from many of the customers in your area about our improved service, so we believe the investment we have made in identifying and correcting faults and damage to underground systems is paying off. We intend to continue with our efforts to provide you with the best possible service. Sincerely, INTERMOUNTAIN RURAL ELECTRIC ASSOCIATION
