As folklore has it, we are a product of culture. It defines us, who we are, how we do things around here. The written and unwritten rules norms and mores aren’t homogeneous though and might vary from different organization, communities and societies. Systems are meant to harmonize all that and enhance efficiency in a functional organization.

It therefore behooves us to embrace a paradigm shift that redefines our work culture and ethic. Let’s breathe life to ISO and the Performance Contracts in place with a view to pulling together and attaining our objectives faster and effectively.

Our soft side as an organization was also on display, as we undertook CSR activities in Dreams Children home in Ngong, Kajiado and Shanzu orphanage Children’s home in Mombasa. In the latter’s case it coincided with our coastal station (Pwani FM) celebrating it’s 18 years of service.

Enjoy the splendor and glamor!

oin me in celebrating the successful completion

of additional broadcast transmission sites on the DVB-T2 platform in 10 remote sites in the country that include far flung areas such as Marsabit, Lamu and Wajir. The exercise that boasts of a transmission power of 2.3 kw and a range of 80 kms line of sight has significantly boosted the viewership experience and reach.

And further within, Coro FM is set to undergo a major revamp that will see it expand its reach and scope as well as new exciting

programmes to reclaim its rightful position in the industry. Pwani FM on the other hand turned 18 years and is testament to our resilience.

Away from that, it is good to inform you that we are enjoying a lot of goodwill from Government and as we speak, we are engaged in key strategies to improve KBC’s financial status. Talks are at an advanced stage and we can only hope and pray that these efforts work.

I call upon staff to apply themselves fully, diligently and professionally to restore

KBC’s glory as the national broadcaster of choice.

Soon I will be addressing staff on the status of the said initiatives and will appreciate the opportunity of hearing from you on how to do things better. Meanwhile let’s keep talking through this medium.

Keep it here!

The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) a pioneer media house with expansive broadcasting network and the Kenya News Agency (KNA) known for news gathering are finalizing a working framework that will invigorate their operations in the news generation and dissemination.

The “game-changer partnership” is believed to be one of its kind and it is expected to outwash competitors in news landscape in Kenya in favour of the two government agencies.

KBC Managing Director Dr Naim Bilal is optimistic that the partnership will crystalize ahead of the launch in early November 2019 by Cabinet Secretary MoICT Joe Mucheru.

Outside Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, KBC will take advantage of KNA’s elaborate news gathering footprint in 47 county headquarters and 25 sub-counties and publish the content online, broadcast on television and radio. So far, KBC and KNA Joint Committee have tabled a concept paper on how the two organizations will partner.

Ag. Director of Information Vitalis Ragul urged the two organizations to leverage on the partnership to seek government support in enhancing their operations

Apart from dissemination content from KNA, the partnership opens doors for joint capacity building as a guarantee to having a quality product in the market that the audience can identify with. This also opens doors for resources sharing such as vehicles, cameras and personnel.

In readiness of the launch of the partnership, the News & Editorial Department has a designated Convergence Editor while the Digital Department has Multimedia Editor assigned to reversion stories from KNA.

The Radio Department has reactivated a Current Affairs for Radio Taifa and the English Service to start with. The vernacular services are also ready to pick stories from respective regions. In addition to footage on specific assignments, Television Department and KNA have constituted a team to jointly produce documentaries and features.

Shanghai Media Group (SMG), the second largest media and culture conglomerate in Shanghai paid a courtesy call to Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.

The media group that boasts of, 13 specialized TV and Radio Channels, with a huge production capacity have co-produced documentaries and films with BBC and Disney, and have distributed their content across the globe.

However, they have never done any business in Africa and it came as a pleasant surprise that they chose Kenya as their first port of call. The delegation that was led by their chairperson of the SMG, Madam Wang, sought possibilities of cooperation in exchange and co-production of documentaries, exchange and news resources, sharing of radio programs and other points of mutual interests.

ASK 2019

The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation was not left behind in participating in this year’s Nairobi International Trade fair, famously referred to as the ASK show. The ASK show took place at the Jamhuri grounds from 30th September to 5th October 2019, with this year’s theme being “Promoting Innovation and Technology through Agriculture and Trade”.

Over the years, KBC has been at the forefront in promoting Agriculture and Trade, through its TV and Radio programming.

A visit to the KBC stand at the Jamhuri grounds, presented the eager show goers with an opportunity to experience the different operations that take place in the TV , Radio and Engineering departments. They also got a chance to experience the

evolution of broadcasting from analogue to digital.

An encounter with several radio presenters, was in favour with the show goers especially students who had yet to choose a career path for themselves. Demonstrations for commercials both live and recorded left them in awe. Our famous radio presenters also made an appearance. Mwinyi Kazungu also known as Mtetezi from Radio Taifa was a fan favourite and show stopper.

The trade fair on the other hand gave KBC the golden opportunity to interact with various publics. Our Sales Executives were also able to engage advertisers and clients from various business sectors.

SPONSORSHIP

FURTHER STUDIESPhoto/Jackson Mnyamwezi

Silas Kiragu is a Senior BIS Officer in the ICT department. He has been in KBC for the last 16 years and recently got a scholarship from the Chinese government to the Kenyan government through the Ministry of ICT.

The sponsorships are yearly and they entail someone coming up with a research notes not less than 400 words in line with the course of study. His research paper was on BIG DATA which he named the BIG O DATA.

He realized that the world -wide -web has a lot of information coming in day in day out, it’s like an ocean of information and getting the information is complicated.

His paper was on solutions on how fast to sieve the information to what is required. He will be studying at Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

He expects to expand his knowledge in technology and experience the 5 G technology which is a game changer in terms of artificial intelligence, meaning technology that replaces

things that humans do.

Challenges that he foresee’s are language barrier, food, leaving his family back especially his daughter whom they are close. He has prepared them about his leaving and he’s is grateful to his wife who has been supportive of the whole project.

Looking forward, he expects to share his experiences and purposes to look for broadcast solutions while undertaking his studies and share with his HoD and implement these project when he’s back.

He encourages the staff to focus on self-development and take advantage of the government sponsored courses that come up every year.

Somber mood engulfed the entire KBC on Monday September 16, 2019 following the sad news of the demise of Senior Revenue officer Alice Wanja Wahome. The late Alice passed on while undergoing treatment at the Texas Cancer, Nairobi.

The late Alice joined KBC in October 1993 from the Auditor-General (State Corporations) office as an Assistant Internal Auditor at Sauti House, Mombasa. She was later promoted to the post Senior Internal Auditor in 2000 and later Senior Revenue Officer in Finance & Administration Department, a position she held until her demise.

During the memorial service held at Studio B, KBC Managing Director Dr Naim Bilal eulogised the late Alice as an accomplished accountant who observed strict work ethics and professionalism .

Marketing Manager Florence Migunde who is also as the Chairperson of the KBC Retirement Benefit Scheme described the late as having a high attention to detail and nothing would go past her unnoticed. The late Alice was described by her colleagues as resourceful and diligent.

The service was presided over by Rev. Tony Kiama of Rivers of God Church who gave the sermon based on the book of Mathew 27:32-44 which talks about Simon of Cyrene being forced to help Jesus carry the cross to Golgotha. He

Out with the Past, In with the New

Central Bank of Kenya(CBK) Governor Patrick Njoroge termed the recently concluded demonetization of the Sh 1,000 note a success.

The bank, however, fell short of its target. Out of the 217million pieces of the old notes that CBK had targeted, it managed to collect 209,661,000. This means 7,386,000 pieces, amounting to 7.3 Billion not returned became worthless paper.

It seems like, those who held onto the old currency, decided to lose it rather than have to explain how they earned it.

During the campaign, the governor visited Kenya Broadcasting Corporation and did live interviews in 3 radio stations ( Radio Taifa, Nosim FM and Minto FM), urging Kenyans to return the old notes.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AT DREAM CHILDREN’S HOME

By Winrose Wanjiru

Dream children’s home was founded in 2005. Racheal and Stephen are the founder and directors of the orphanage. Racheal with the support of her husband consulted few friends and their church leaders and Dream children’s home (Dream) started with 4 kids only. It is an independent project located between Ngong and Matasia town.

Since the children have been finding a home in Dream and the number has gone up to 120. The orphanage is run as per the government regulations under Section 30 of the Children Act 2001, The National Council for Children’s Services (NCCS). This body exercises general supervision and control over the planning, financing and co-ordination of child rights and welfare activities and advises the Government on all aspects thereof. The orphanage accepts orphans, abused, needy children and abandoned kids.

Corporate Affairs Staff with the help of the Kenya Broadcasting Management on 20th September paid a visit to Dream Children’s Home. The crew was welcomed by Ms. Zipporah Munene who is the social worker in the home. She is in-charge of the orphanage and also the contact person for Kenyan government as per the children welfare

department. KBC crew found the young babies whilst the other children were in school. Being a Friday, schooling kids were called on from the school. The children together with the KBC crew interacted, sang together, before the presentation of gifts that were brought.

The Corporation managed to donate Clothes and food stuffs worth 50,000kshs.The home faces challenge in terms of food for 120 kids when the school is opened. Reintegration- of children with their relative as some kids refuse to connect with their relatives and a time run away from their home, and catering for the bills as they do not have sponsors.

The orphanage however has clean water borehole

that supplies water to the orphanage and to the school. In 2010 the home was able to build two beautiful and stable dormitories for both boys and girls. Dream gets help from well-wishers and it generates some income from poultry, in-house school (Lekuruki School), zero grazing, and green house farming.

Ms. Zipporah gave thanks to Kenya Broadcasting Corporation for the generosity as it would go a long way in assisting the kids.

PEOPLE PLUS ~ TELL US YOUR STORY

David Munai joined KBC in1994, he was posted in Kisumu and in 2005 he was transferred to Nairobi. He is a recovering alcoholic who started tasting and drinking alcohol out of curiosity when he was in form four, he then became a social drinker. All this time he didn’t know that he had the A1 Allele of the DRD2 gene, which meant he was prone to be an alcoholic, the alcohol craving with this kind of people are so high and with time it gets out of control. He spoke to Jane Kiama about his journey to recovery.

INTERVIEW

How has the journey been?

I first went to the rehab in 2016 when KBC Alcohol and Drug Abuse Committee having noticed that I had a problem, referred me to the Ministry of Public Service Youth and Gender Affairs for counseling. There, I was supposed to have 12 sessions however elections came in 2017 and the environment wasn’t conducive so we agreed to meet after elections but as things turned out the election process went longer than expected, it is during this time that I relapsed though I had made great progress.

How was this period between the relapse and the second rehab?

I started absconding duties I would go to social places not knowing I was supposed to be on duty. My supervisors noted. I was referred to the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Committee for counselling. By now my drinking had worsened and I was referred back to the Ministry of Public Service Youth and Gender Affairs where I was recommended for an in-patient treatment.

In June you checked in for the in-patient treatment?

Yes, in an institution called Raphaelites located in Limuru it’s an institution that caters for drug abusers of all kinds. Our day would start at 9 am and end at 5:30pm. We were not supposed to have phones and no visitors were allowed.

Did the drinking affect your family?

Yes they were drained financially because I could drink to my last coin, my health was also deteriorating and I could abscond duty.

What would you say triggered your drinking to a level of no return

I would say I was exposed. But now I have learnt to avoid PPT meaning I should avoid the People who drink alcohol, Places where alcohol is served and things like beer bottles, adverts etc. that would trigger the cravings.

You have been sober for how long now?

Since I checked in to the rehab, which should be an upward of 115 days. My appetite is now back as well as my health. I however, almost developed Liver Cirrhosis because I could feel pain in my liver every time I drank. I have gained 18 Kgs since and my appetite is back fully.

What measures have you put in place to make sure that you remain sober?

Am keeping myself busy. Whenever I am free I hit the gym or go for sporting activities. I am also avoiding places not fit for a recovering alcoholic.

How was the experience immediately you left the rehab.

I was confused and angry because I didn’t know how people i.e. workmates, friends and family will receive me, I had so many unanswered questions. But then there is another session called the aftercare which I will be

attending every Tuesday till December making it 3 months of aftercare. During these sessions we converge with the counsellor and the other recovering alcoholics, share experiences and help one another. After those sessions a certificate will be issued as we cut a cake together.

Advise to workmate dealing with alcoholic colleagues

They should know that an alcoholic is not a bad worker. Alcoholism is a disease that should be treated and enough support given to the patient. Relieving them off their duties won’t help much.

Was there any preparation to society on how to receive recovering alcoholic after rehab?

Yes. The social aspect is well taken care of. There is a family session and a session with workmates They are educated on how to receive us when we go back home and the kind of support they should offer.

Going forward?

I want to do my duties perfectly now that am sober, I want to completely abstain with the help of God. I plan to take care of the social, psychological and spiritual well-being. I will also be attending Alcoholic Anonymous meetings (AA Meetings) on set dates. I also urge people to support alcoholics…get them treatment and to not look down on them.

In 2014, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation in an effort to improve on Quality Service delivery acquired the ISO 9001: 2008 certification. But as times are changing and customer demands are increasing, there was need to upgrade the Quality Management System to ISO 9001: 2015.

In an effort to determine the extent of conformity of activities, processes and products/services with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 as well as identify areas of improvement, the

ISO team of auditors conducted audits within Broadcasting House, which were later replicated to a number of outside stations in Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nyeri.

During the audit, the auditors were given the necessary cooperation allowing the collection of audit evidence and the evaluation of this evidence to generate the audit findings.

During the opening meeting held at KBC Boardroom, to flag off the audit exercise, the

Managing Director, Dr Naim Bilal demonstrated accountability to the effectiveness of the QMS by the commitment to embrace best international practices, development of the Quality Policy Statement and the appointment of the QMR and the ISO Champions.

He urged all the HoDs to accord the auditors utmost cooperation as they were the ones tasked with leading the implementation of QMS within their departments.
