Membership NewsTRUDIE TAYLOR

Past President of The Garden Club of Honolulu (2004-2006), Trudie Taylor passedaway November 17, 2012. She joined The Garden Club in 1986 and served theclub in nearly every way possible. She wrote for the Bulletin, chaired VisitingGardens and also Garden History and Design. She served as the Zone XIIRepresentative to the GCA Garden History and Design Committee for two yearsand then served as a Vice Chair of that GCA committee. She loved studying thedesign of a garden. She served as our Recording Secretary, Second VicePresident, Counselor and then President. She co-chaired several committees andserved on numerous others. Most recently she was Corresponding Secretary and brought us into thecomputer age with the first TGCH web site and electronic Maile Vine.

In the community Trudie was active at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. She ran thevery successful Garden Café at the Honolulu Academy of Arts for many years, worked in the Education Department and was a Docent. She was a member ofPEO. She served on the Board of the Lyon Arboretum Association for many yearsand was its Past President.

In 2009, we grew Kukui trees from seedlings for the horticulture challengeclass for our Flower Show. Trudie inspired our TGCH members to becomeinvolved at the Peace Garden on Diamond Head and to plant the Kukui treesthere as our GCA Centennial project. She continued to coordinate our plantingand maintenance of this garden with several other groups and members of thecommunity. Just a couple of weeks ago, Trudie gladly contributed two Loulupalms from our most recent challenge class to be planted at Oahu Cemetery.

She was always an enthusiastic participant, quick with a word of encouragement. In recognition of hermany activities, Trudie received the TGCH Marion Picher Continuing Service Award, the GCA ClubAppreciation Award in 2006 and the very special GCA Club Medal of Merit in 2011.

Trudie’s quiet sense of humor and leadership opened many doors and smoothed ruffled waters. She wasknown as a dedicated volunteer and devoted and loyal friend. We will miss her.

NOVEMBER MEETING SPOTLIGHT

General Membership Meeting at Harbor View CenterBy Muffin Riegels

Sharon Fairbanks was the star of the November meeting! Thanks to her generous nature and the help ofher great brother, Jim Cook, members were treated to an early morning tour of the Oahu Fish Auction,long-line fishing boats, and ice making factory. Participants witnessed large commercial life rafts being

inflated and inspected. We now have an expanded understanding of the goings on at Pier 38.Thank you Sharon!

Harbor View Center hosted our meeting in their new conference room. The room had a gorgeous viewof the harbor and the equipment for the speaker presentations was first rate. Rick Guinther and Ka'imiScudder updated members on issues related to the Kawainui Marsh in Kailua. Rick focused on the Na

Pohaku site and talked about the creating of a dry, lowland, native garden. A delicious lunch was cateredby Nico's and several members went home with the freshest of fish filets and Nico's secret sauce to share

with family for dinner. Each member received a Kale plant, a gift from Jean Abbott and Muffin Riegels, and a recipe for Kale Salad from Barb Masumoto.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN KAWAINUI MARSH?By Carole Chun

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started construction in June, 2012 to create a series of 11 shallowfresh-water ponds in upper Kawainui Marsh, below Castle Hospital. The ponds are being built to at-tract endangered Hawaiian water birds such as the 'Ae'o (Hawaiian Stilt) , 'Alae 'ula (Moorhen), and theAlae ke'oke'o (Hawaiian Coot). In the 1940's thousands of native water birds populated the marshes ofKailua. Today, only a few hundred of these endangered birds remain in the Kailua wetlands.

The entire area of the ponds will be fenced to keepout predators. The eleven ponds will have solar-pow-ered pumps connected to shallow wells. The StateDivision of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) will takeover the ponds once constructed and maintain them.

“9/11 Survivor Tree” Still Stands After Hurricane SandyBy Priscilla Growney

During our recent 16 day trip to New York City, we experienced theaftermath of Hurricane Sandy and a five inch snow fall in Manhattan. Notonly did the “9/11 Survivor Tree” survive another fierce storm, but theHigh Line (a one mile linear park) opened the third extension just beforeHurricane Sandy and fortunately was not damaged. The Director of the9/11 Memorial emailed this report to friends: “The 9/11Memorial/Museum was hit with a 4 foot tidal surge. The Memorial itselfhad no damage. All the support areas like security screening, locker roomsand retail store were completely flooded. The Museum construction site, all below grade, had 8 feet of water at the lower levels. While pumpingout last week they caught a carp that was still alive. They carried the fishback to the Hudson. We reopened the Memorial yesterday with limitedhours and attendance, while we rebuild what was lost.”

Veterans Day at the Waikiki War Memorial NatatoriumBy Gerry Ching & Donna Ching

The Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium was built in 1927 as a living memorial dedicated to the men andwomen who served during the “Great War”or World War I. More than 10,000 served from Hawaii. GCHmembers were involved in creating a beautiful arrangement which graced the gates of the Memorial forthe observance event on November 11. Ele Potts was the floral designer. Joanne Shigekane and Phyllis

Guard donated plant material from their Nuuanu properties and Gerry and Philip Ching cut and tied.Gerry’s daughter Donna Ching was the photographer. It was a truly Hawaiian tribute to our veterans.

TGCH Trip to San Francisco!

THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS GIFT!By Sharon Fairbanks

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the houseNot a creature was stirring except for your spouseThe children were nestled all snug in their bedsAs hubby headed for the mall overwhelmed with dread

The mall was frenetic -- filled with people and clatterHe needed to find something that to you would matterHis eyes how they watered; his cheeks how they flushedHis hands they were empty and he felt overly rushed

This angst could be avoided if you would just say,“Give me the trip to San Francisco on Christmas Day”Your family will exclaim as you fly out of sightMany thanks to you for a calm Christmas night

Please visit the GCA website, Committees G-Z, Visiting Gardens if you are interested in joining any of theGCA Visiting Garden Tours. In an effort to be fair to all members, the national committee has established“Interest Lists” which are detailed on the website. There is too much important information about theInterest Lists and how they work to detail in this report.

There is still space available for the North Carolina trip “The Beauty of the SouthernHighlands, the gardens of Cashiers and Highlands” on July 15-19, 2013.

Sicily and the Palm Beach trips are sold out but you are welcometo add your name to the waiting lists.

To put your name on an Interest List, send an email to:[email protected]

Be sure to indicate which trip you are interested in.

I am trying to assemble a file of GCH members who would be willing to share their gardens with gardenclub visitors. In the Visiting Gardens section of the GCA website on the right hand side is: Lists, Forms &Samples. By selecting this, the Share my Garden form will appear. Please fill it out, and either email it to

me as an attachment or send it to me. Forms will also be available at the next Membership Meeting.

REDUCE YOUR WASTELINE THIS HOLIDAY!

Household waste disposal increases by 25% from Thanksgiving to New Years. Materials such asplastic, cardboard, wrapping paper and food waste add millions of tons of mass to our landfills each

holiday season. The excess waste occupies space, squanders resources and produces greenhousegases, which are potentially hazardous to our environment.

The following tips will help you reduce your WASTELINE this holiday season.

WASTELINE REDUCING TIPS

Send e-cards or holiday cards made of recycled paperLook for gifts with limited packaging or packaging that is recyclableWrap presents creatively in fabric, artwork or recycled wrapping paperReuse and repurpose boxes, ribbon, gift bags, tins and bottlesFreeze leftovers or send home with your guests in reusable containers, don’t send to the landfillCompost fruit and vegetable scraps or grind in garbage disposal unit, don’t send to the landfill

CONSERVATION CORNER by Barbara Kuljis

Gardening at the Women’s Community Correctional Center in Kailua can be a challenge. In September2008, ten micro-propagated Ma’afala ‘ulu plants were gifted to TGCH & WCCC by the Breadfruit Institute,Hawai’i National Botanical Garden, Kauai. Carefully nurtured by the inmates, the plants soon become largeand impressive enough to be exhibited during our 2009 Flower show. Today the trees stand 6-8” tall, andin the Spring of 2012, the ‘ulu trees began to bear fruit!

Then came summer and the leaves began to yellow and drop from the trees. Well meaning staff andinmates adjusted the irrigation system, increasing the length and frequency of watering. Yet leavescontinued to yellow and drop now from too much water. By October, the trees (which thrive in sandy soil)were sitting in mud. In October our dedicated Garden Club women, WCCC staff and inmates, andcommunity volunteers rallied to the rescue. Special thanks go to Nathan Miranda of Waiahole Botanicals, inmate Lillian, and Sergeant Nohea Kamelamela and her work-line. Nohea’s work-line and our GCH womendug in to weed, compost, fertilize and mulch the trees. Nathan volunteered his time and expertise tomodify the irrigation to a drip system so the trees will receive constant watering. Inmate Lillian developedan ‘ulu maintenance log and offered to oversee the health of the trees and ensure proper functioning ofthe irrigation system.

Nathan Miranda of WaiaholeBotanicals (his family’sbusiness) has joyfully

supported our efforts atWCCC for the last 5 years byvolunteering on his days offfrom work and never askingfor or expecting anything in

return. Mahalo nui loa Nathan!

Shirley Meneice HorticultureConference

October 22-24, 2012Austin, Texas

By Margaret Mortz

HOWDY Y’ALL!  I kicked up myheels at the annual horticultureconference in Austin, Texas, named after the celebratedCalifornia gardener and pastchairman of GCA’s HorticultureCommittee.  This conference was

established in 2001 by thatcommittee to give members anopportunity to study horticulturalsubjects in a sharply focused way.I was very honored to be TGCH'sdelegate for 2012.

This year’s theme was SustainableLandscapes.  The keynote speakerwas Robert Hammond, a visionarywho transformed a derelictelevated freight line into one ofthe most innovative reclamationprojects in history.  His book HighLine details in words and amazingphotographs his and his partner’sefforts to create a new mile-longexpanse of park on Manhattan’sWest Side.  The photographsspeak a thousand words.

From the river boat ride theevening before the conferencecommenced, to the closingspeeches, it was an incredibleand fun learning experience.

Our very own Phyllis Lee, GCA’sHorticulture CommitteeChairperson, and ShirleyMeneice HorticultureConference Committee ChairChris Caudill and theircommittees worked so very hardto inform and entertain themore than 200 attendees.

Holly Ann Marchant proudlydisplays her bromeliad

wreath.Provisional Leslie Almeida

shows off her beautiful wreath.

Holiday Bromeliad Wreaths is the first of a trio of Stepping Stones classes focusing on holiday decor.  OnFriday, November 9, a full class of 17 made wreaths of bromeliads, Pele's hair (hinahina), and wideribbons.  The wreath will last for a long time if watered, and the ribbon may be changed with the season. Thanks to Gail for showing us what we can do with a little wire and will!
