The date of the first publication is May 30, 2019. Published: May 30, June 6, 13 and 20, 2019 the Saturday games, a re- charged Mustangs team brought out the bats and out-scored Post 4 from Bill- ings 20-13 on Sunday. Post 4 actually led 11-4 after three innings against a trio of young hurlers in Lovell starter Mangus and relievers Bishop Trainor and Nate Minemyer. But the Mustang bats heated up and the local nine exploded for five runs in the fourth, six in the fifth and five in the sixth to surge ahead while Tyson Christiansen slammed the door on the Post 4 team in the fifth and sixth before allowing a pair of unearned runs in the seventh after Lovell led 20-11. Wambeke relieved to get the final out. Not only did Christian- sen pitch well to pick up the win, he belted a three-run double in the fifth. Wam- beke led the Mustang hit- ting attack by going 4-5 with three runs, and Man- gus was 3-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Ginest and Christiansen had a pair of hits each, and Pickett and Christiansen had three RBIs each, Trainor and Jadyn Snyder two apiece. “Aside from that (nine- run) third inning it was a pretty good game,” James- on said. “The third inning was pretty ugly defensive- ly, but aside from that half inning we played a pretty good game. Offensively, we did a good job. Tyson came in and threw very well in relief.” POWELL SWEEP Powell broke a dou- ble-digit losing streak against the Mustangs in a big way with the dou- bleheader sweep Tuesday night. In game one, Pickett dueled Powell starter Ry- ley Meyer on the mound, but after Pickett was hit on the elbow while batting, the tide turned. Powell plated an un- earned run in the top of the first before Pickett worked out of the jam, then scored on a sacrifice fly in the third to lead 2-0. Meanwhile, the Mustangs left the bases loaded with the top of the order up to bat in the sec- ond, and Pickett was hit on the elbow in the third, forc- ing his removal from the game to ice his arm. “He got hit again on that elbow after getting hit Sun- day,” Jameson said. “It was the same spot, right on the elbow. He bats left-hand- ed, so his pitching arm is exposed.” Tyson Christiansen re- lieved Pickett and allowed an unearned run in the top of the fourth as Powell led 3-0. The Mustangs loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame but failed to push a run across. Powell broke the game open in the sixth by scor- ing five runs with two out after the Mustangs should have been out of the inning. Three errors in the inning did the Mustangs in. Powell added two more in the sev- enth, and Lovell finally got on the scoreboard with two in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 10-2. “The biggest thing, I think, was that we left the bases loaded in four of the seven innings,” Jameson said. “We just could never come up with a big hit to get the ball rolling. “Our defensive effort was very sloppy tonight. When you give up 10 runs and only one of them is earned, you know you’re go- ing to be in for a long night.” Lovell finished with eight errors in the game and was out-hit 11-5. Game two was ugly for the home team as Pow- ell took an early lead and crushed the Mustangs 16-5 in five innings. The Pioneers plated six runs in the top of the first against young Lovell starter Nate Mine- myer as a pair of errors by the Mustangs allowed Pow- ell to have a big inning. Up 7-1, Powell exploded for nine runs in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Lovell scored four in the bottom of the frame be- fore the game ended on the mercy rule. Powell only out-hit Lovell 9-8, but seven errors doomed the Mustangs. Ezra Harlow and Dallen Mangus had two hits each to lead the Mustangs, and Mangus and Trainor each had a pair of RBIs. “It was definitely an extremely disappointing performance to open up the conference schedule,” Jameson said of the twin bill sweep. “The defense was poor. With our pitch- ing staff we need to be able to make plays behind them, and when we don’t do that things get ugly. “Some might ask ‘Why start Nate (Minemyer)?’ We were going to start Tyson, but with CJ having to leave the first game with his el- bow injury, it changed plans for the four conference games (two more Thurs- day). It was errors again, seven errors. Our defense kind of dictated that game.” CONFERENCE GAMES The Mustangs now en- ter the heart of the confer- ence season, hosting Green River today (Thursday) for a doubleheader at 3 p.m., then traveling to Cody Tuesday for a pair at 5 p.m. The Mus- tangs travel to Green River June 23 and Riverton June 28.
