Los Angeles, The City of Angels, a city with much influence on the world and its culture. Los Angeles, home to Rodeo Drive, movie stars, the largest manufacturing industry in the US (the Garment District ) and a colorful and wide range of subcultures. Los Angeles and Southern California have more impact on fashion trends, music and pop culture than most want to give it credit for. The reality is you move here to become famous, and if you want to sell high end clothing, jewelry and accessories, you open a shop on Rodeo Drive. The fact is when you are wearing Oakley sun-glasses, Betsey Johnson skirts, surfing, riding your BMX bike or just watched a movie that inspired the way you dress for your evening date, you have been under our influence. Los Angeles and Southern California had its impact on you.

I have been sitting on the idea of launching a fashion publication for close to a decade. It never made much sense to me that Los Angeles is on the sidelines when it comes to the fashion world. Lit-erally, we have everything right here, from the very high end Haute Couture to the trendy subcultures. It’s movie stars and rock stars who sell most brands nowdays, and most live here in Los Angeles.

Last October, I decided to launch our website (www.theLosAnge-lesFashion.com) during the Los Angeles Fashion Week Spring Summer 2012, and we covered every event. The response was just amazing. People loved our site, loved our photos and the number of followers on our social media has just exploded beyond my wild-est expections.

The time seemed just perfect for a new publication to be born. A new kind of publication, a green publication, a publication that builds on its community and gives back to its community.

The Los Angeles Fashion magazine vows to stay green by printing a limited number of high quality print issues with our main focus being digital delivery. With our digital editions available in May on Apple NewsStand, a leader in digital publication, we will be among the leading fashion magazines to adopt this platform. This will give us instant reach to millions of readers around the world as we con-tinue to bring to you a high quality magazine.

We are delighted to bring to you this special premier issue covering the 2012 spring lines from LAFW. We will be releasing two more special editions before going monthly in October 2012. All these editions will be available in print, digital download and on Apple newsstand.

Anthony Franco is a designer and stylist who creates well constructed clothing for men and women. His idea is that all clothing should be timeless and hold true to his aesthetic for the line. His custom made dresses, corsets, blouses, leather goods, knits, and suits are coveted by celebrities and fashionistas all over the world. Last season, we attended his show during LA Fashion week and were in awe of his beautiful collection. His womens wear and menswear was unique, classic, and completely unique.

His women’s wear was edgy, with women walking out in leather skirts and chiffon tops. Dresses were custom made with intricate detailing and prints that would be ideal for work or play. My absolute favorite was a mustard yellow gown (THE color of the season) that was strapless, ruffled and flowy. The colors, prints, and styles were reminiscent of resort wear with tropical florals, ruffles, and even a fabulous one piece that was accented with a tropical straw hat. A specific tribal print was used in a dress and as a cover up for a simple black bikini, and when a model in a beaded shell top and hemmed blazer came out following, I was in awe—Franco seriously does detail better than anyone I’ve seen yet. If you’ve been reading the LA Fashion, you would know that we’ve been talking about how Tangerine is one of the most current color trends out there, and Franco utilized this stunning color in a multitude of dresses, from short and tight to long and flowy. Some were strapless, some were one shoulder, and some were v-neck; either way, they all looked amazing, and he pulled it off—even finishing with a sequined tan and orange number.

As far as menswear, there were masculine leather jackets with studs paired with colored shirts and fitted trousers. Shirts were long sleeved, short sleeved and striped with pastel tones that added a much needed touch of color to simple shorts and pants. Suits were beautifully tailored--some complete with a bow tie. Suit patterns were mismatched and it worked amazingly well. A green suit with a colorful tie was fun and fashionable, but there were also suits that were more classic and business appropriate due to simple colors and patterns. My favorite of the evening was the checkered suit paired with a tan shirt.

Although Franco’s show was last season, he was right on point for all the trends this Spring 2012. We can’t wait to see his upcoming collection…especially if it’s anything like his ones in the past.

Dina Bar-El 2012 collection

Dina Bar-El is known for the stunning yellow dress Kate Hudson wore in How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days and some of the dresses at Los Angeles Fashion Week in October were just as stunning.

There were a variety of dress styles to hit the runway and they all had one thing in common, form-fitting and super sexy, and some were even fun. The light-hearted white citrus fruit dress was all about fun, a carefree dress for a more casual encounter. Polka dots make an appearance in a half sleeve off the shoulder dress with that same elegant sex appeal Julia Roberts had in her polka dot dress in Pretty Woman. The sexy styles continued as the show went on. The mustard crisscross front and teal ruched dress were both low cut and super hot. Depending on your intentions, wear them to the office or to play, either way you are sure to be noticed. There is also shine and shimmer in this collection. Between the cocktail dresses and gowns, glittery gold and rich blues with scooped necks or shoulder straps made Dina Bar-El’s new collection a dazzling one.

The glamorous evening gowns were the stars of this collection. Dina Bar-El definitely mixes luxury with life. The smashing off the shoulder long red dress had two silky accent lines running down the front with a high-cut slit giving this dress an exquisite attitude. The best however was a white floor length gown with a rhinestone waist accent shaped like a giant snowflake was as graceful and elegant as it gets. Most of Dina Bar-El’s 2012 collection has the elegant look a woman wants and the comfort she demands, for a price of course.

Last Year’s LA Fashion Week Spring /Summer 2012 shows at the Sunset Gower Studio many designers’ new collections brought jaws to the floor and Karen Capili did just that. Wow!

Embroidery with intricate detail, each facet of the gowns were carefully and meticulously detailed with flowers, floral embroidery, sequence and even feathers. These gowns were a show stopper. There were gowns with hundreds if not thousands of delicate flowers carefully connected to create exquisite and wearable pieces of art in bold reds, yellows and pinks. The lavish gowns all had their own unique styles. From the yellow feathered gown that would make big bird blush to the Cinderellaesque design of the bustled lavender and pink ball gown, Capili spared no imagination and glamour when creating this new collection.

Capili’s variety of colours and fabrics are inspired by the boldness of those the 1980’s was known for, entwined with the eloquence of the Victorian Era. Even the more modern designs like the black bubble mini with a white one- shouldered top and the dress designed with reusable supermarket bags for the eco-friendly consumer, were a smashing hit. Capili is definitely one to watch in the coming year for more unique and bold collections.

“Live your dream and never give up”

Mikey Koffman is a familiar TV face but what many may not know is that she is the brain of Los Ange-les Fashion Week. We were excited to have an exclusive interview with her and share with our readers the insider’s story of Mikey Koffman and Los Angeles Fashion Week. As I walked into her office at Sunset Gower Studios, the hospitable staff and the most amiable Mikey greeted me. She is gregarious and very passionate. Once we settled in after introductions and light hearted joking about, we began to talk about what her vision and Los Angeles Fashion Weekend is all about. For one week, twice a year, The Los Angeles Fashion Week is the place to be if you are anyone in the fashion industry. Designers, photographers, stylists and buyers from all over the country come to Los Angeles for this biannual event. From the meet and greets to the after parties and of course, the fashion shows, Los Angeles Fashion Week at Sunset Gower Studios has made a name for itself, thanks to Mikey Koffman.

Mikey Koffman got her start in fashion through her true passion, producing. Twelve years ago on the rooftop of the Downtown Standard Hotel, she produced her first show for the newly emerging Los Angeles Fashion Week and remained on board ever since. Six years later, went on to create the Green Initiative Humanitarian Fashion Show showcasing green designers and their brands.

For the past three and half years, Mikey Koffman has been producing Los Angeles Fashion Week making its current home Sunset Gower Studios. Thanks to Mikey Koffman, and her partner in crime, Hope Reiners, LAFW continues to transform into a great platform for emerging and established designers. From earlier days at Smashbox to Culver City, then to Hollywood, Mikey Koffman has since made the LAFW more successful.

Page 23: the Los Angeles Fashion magazine

The move to Sunset Gower Studios made it much more accessible and has improved celebrity attendance such as Jack Black, Ritchie Sambora, Heather Locklear, Mena Suvari and Christina Milian just to name a few. The attendees are a mixture of the media list Smashbox had and three and a half years of additions by Mikey and the LAFW team. LAFW showcases designers of Men and Women’s contemporary cloth-ing, in March and in October. March is the preview of the Fall Collections to come and usually has twelve to fifteen designers. The October show is a much larger show consisting of anywhere from fifteen to twenty-five designers showing the up and coming Spring collections of those design-ers chosen.

Los Angeles Fashion Week currently has a media partnership with KTLA and over the past six years has really played a major role in the increasing success of LAFW. KTLA now televises the Sunday night closing show of LA Fashion Weekend live which has never been done before, not in Los Angeles, New York or Miami. To date, the closing show has captivated an incredible 1.5 million viewers and continues to grow, so LAFW can con-tinue “turnin’ and burnin’ for our designers” states Koffman. “Nobody can do what we do; We have amazing media partnerships bringing light to what we are doing and we are very blessed; We are the only company that produces professional turn-key runway shows, successfully.”

As far as attendees to this alluring event, it is exclusive and by invitation only. For those who aspire to be part of LAFW, there are several ways you can get onto this exclusive list. You must meet the criteria of either being an industry person with media credential from an established media source, be a stylist, a buyer or of course be an A-list celebrity. You can visit their website “http://www.losangelesfw.com” and submit your credentials to be officially registered with LAFW.

When I asked Mikey about favorites from this past October’s Fashion week, she was quick to say Culture Swimwear (created by Hope Reiners) was at the top of the list. “Culture Swimwear is an amazing handmade brand, creating jobs for people in Cambodia and I couldn’t be more proud of having a brand on the runway that supersedes many of the celebrity brands on the runway, “Mikey states. I asked Mikey who she personally thought of as a style icon and she laughed and said “The Fonz” later add-ing Fonzie’s ex-girlfriend, Pinky Tuscadero, the leather wearing demolition derby driver cool chick from Happy Days.

As the interview was coming to a close, I wanted to get some advice for you aspiring designers. Mikey said “Don’t give up! What inspires me the most, and I try to pass on to people is to hold on to your dream and never give up! I love when people tell me I can’t do something or it can’t be done, you’ll never make it happen. I’ve heard it since our first season and here we are 8 seasons later. Live your dream and don’t ever let anyone tell you can’t do it.”

Cristina NITOPI

Born in Sydney Australia, Cristina Nitopi has always been passionate about fashion. Although she never thought she would be a designer growing up and ac-tually got a degree in psychology and counseling, she decided that she wanted to express herself creatively, prompting her to begin designing a clothing line. The designer stood by her word when she said she wanted to express herself creatively. Her show at LA Fashion Week was unbelievable and the LA Fashion was lucky enough to attend her show! Her collection was girly, sophisticated and classy, it was also an absolute crowd pleaser. To start, a model walked out in a below the knee length gold and mesh dress that dazzled the audience. It was form fitting with a slit in the front, showing off the perfect amount of sexiness. It was cut down the middle and filled with a mesh print that was concealing but also allowed for a little bit of imagination. I would absolutely rock this dress for a special event with some black pumps.

Next, a model came out in an interesting and avant-garde white dress that was skin tight except for two rectangular blocks on her upper and lower body. It was definitely something that would take a lot of confidence to wear, but the model walked out looking like she definitely felt sexy.

The following model’s dress was over the top girly! It was cream colored, lace, and featured a large tulle rose at the top shoulder. The dress was strapless and the solid portion was to her knees with a lace overlay extending about four inches lower, really adding some edge to an otherwise matronly dress. This piece would be absolutely amazing for a day-time party or even a wedding. The lace detailing was intricate and classy and I absolutely adored the fit.

Every girl adores pink and one of my favorite dresses was Nitopi’s knee length pink dress with an embroidered overlay extending to the floor with a beautiful floral print. The dress was two tones of pink and was strapless. It had a bustier-looking top and would look alluring with a nude strappy sandal (just like the model wore!). Nitopi seemed to have a universal theme through her collections—prints! Mod-els were clad in strappy dresses with animal prints, unique patterns and striking colors—some had ruffles, some had slits, and a few incorporated interesting cut out necklines. My favorite piece of the evening was a polka dot halter dress that was flowy and sexy. Nitopi was on point with the polka dots because as most of us know, they are this season’s most popular trend. The frock was cute, girly, and so flattering…women of any shape could rock with dress with utter confidence! Nitopi ended her show with one-shoulder floor length dresses with slits and in-tricate detailing and patters once again! Some were flowy, and some were form fitting—either way, they were all flattering and fun. After seeing Nitopi’s stunning collection, we are beyond ecstatic to see what’s next for this budding designer.

Lace and Grace

Kelly Nishimoto was one of the favorites for the 2011 Los Angeles Fashion Week. A four time veteran to The Los Angeles Fashion Week, it is no surprise that Nishimoto rocked the runway with her new Play. Lounge. Sleep. Collection The flowing sheer fabrics in fuchsia and plum tones accented with black lace were just some of the elegant and sexy styles to walk down the runway. Hearts infused in many of the designs are sure to be a hit for any Valentine. The pale peaches and off-white tones used for some of the outerwear gave the feel of comfort and style with the pizzazz and elegance Nishimoto is always sure to deliver. We look forward to seeing more of her collection in 2012

XCVIXCVI debuted their new collection at LA Fashion week October 2011 and it was stunning to say the least. XCVI’s effortless, eclectic, bohemian style is a perfect match for any confident woman. Their loose, breezy clothing looked far from frumpy- in fact, the clothes were more flattering than many of the lines I’ve had the privilege to view during fashion week. XCVI’s biggest strength would absolutely be the fact that their clothing is universal- any type of woman could wear a multitude of pieces from the line. XCVI prides themselves on the luxury of their fabrics being extra soft and breathable, and after viewing this collection, their description is on par.

The clothing was gracefully draped against each models body, and the fact that every piece from the collection looked as if it could be mixed and matched is perfect for someone like me. XCVI showcased ensembles that would be fitting for the workplace or a night out- true versatility! I adore an outfit I can wear to the office then straight to after work drinks.

Without further ado, let’s go over the pieces that caught my eye on the runway. XCVI kept hair and makeup effortless, allowing the crowd to focus on their clothing. Models makeup was minimal except for fire engine red lipstick and a touch of mascara. First off, the dresses were mostly long and solid in color. An orange, Grecian inspired dress caught my eye more than most- enticing color, ideal length, and elegant detail- although there was just a simple tie at each shoulder, that alone added an interesting touch to an otherwise simple frock. Other dresses walked the runway with lace and fringe detail (I have been seeing a ton of this lately). My favorite piece was a black and white flowy skirt with a black men’s inspired button down that showed the perfect amount of cleavage; it was paired off with a thick brown belt that tied the look together impeccably. Pants seemed to be a staple in the show- lengths ranged from short to long and material ranged from cargo to linen- the list was endless. I especially liked an off the shoulder white and blue peasant top paired with capri’s. This show really proved my point that the A-Line is back and in a big way- long skirts were paired with loose fitting tee shirts were an ideal mix of classy and casual. The rule “don’t wear white after labor day” is one I choose not to follow, and apparently XCVI agrees with me. The show featured various white pieces with lace and crochet detail. Models looked young and fresh in white maxi dresses, detailed blouses, and movable, flattering skirts.

JOHNSONBetseyThe Qeen Of Funky Fashion

Last Year Sunday, October 23, at LA Fashion Week at Sunset Gower Studios, Betsey Johnson unveiled yet another classic collection. As you may know, over a decade ago, Betsey Johnson was diagnosed with breast cancer, and although when first diagnosed, she confided only in her daughter Lulu, today, she is a survivor and she loudly and proudly supports breast cancer awareness through fashion events, parties and donations to the non-profit organization, Fashion Targets Breast Cancer, and her fashion sense is still rockin’. Betsey Johnson is known for her wild fashion sense and funky fusions of fabrics and styles. We saw everything from tartan plaid paired with red leopard and lace, to school lessons, yes a “teach me a lesson” bright yellow ruler knit top. As always, her patterns and fabrics in combination with her wild ideas rocked the runway.

A personal favourite was the pink tutu dress, accented by a dark brown leopard print coat, (reminiscent of my first $600 faux leopard coat bought 20 years ago, a classic Betsey Johnson I still wear today.) The pink zipper-top bustier ruffled dress worn with a crocheted black sweater, accented with a floral trim was also a crowd pleaser.

MARCH 2012 - the Los Angeles Fashion 35

Page 36: the Los Angeles Fashion magazine

The collection had a variety of minis, from skirts to dresses, all with bustier corset tops in the bubble or tutu style. One stunning design was the burgundy velvet bustier corset dress accented by a huge pink ribbon set across the chest. It had a hot pink ruffled tutu bottom with light pink trim that bounced about the runway. Velvet, fur and lace, all classic to Betsey Johnson’s style, made a plentiful appearance. There were bold colors and patterns mismatched in a way that only Johnson can pull off. Always a fan of a woman I consider to be a goddess of the fashion world.

Last Years 2012 Fashion Week was fun, but the Tumbler and Tipsy show was a whole new level of fun. I witnessed a glitter explosion as the runway sparkled and shined with sequins galore! Michael Kuluva’s line seems to be a hit with celebs too- the gorgeous Matthew Morrison was sitting right in front of me! I have personally met Michael, and he is so friendly, funny, and beyond creative. I couldn’t believe that he was an Olympic Figure Skater when he was younger!

The show began with models walking out in shorts in blue, purple, and gray. Models wore black tights under the shorts which made a pretty wild short into something a tiny bit more demure. The top pieces showed some skin, either having one clasp holding a sequined cape together, or pairing a short muscle tummy top with high wasted shorts. One model came out in shorts wearing a gray, simple tee, silk screened with neon designs. The next look was something I would absolutely wear- the model was dressed in a flowy, backless dress that was so versatile- could be worn to work, or out- depending on how you choose to accessorize.

TUMBLER and Tipsy

38 MARCH 2012 - the Los Angeles Fashion

Page 39: the Los Angeles Fashion magazine

Speaking of accessorize… our simply dressed model was draped with tons of Tumbler and Tipsys’ signature neck-laces- painted corks hung on chains! These went with the neon theme, and were paired with long chain necklaces. When a model walked out in a blue sequined short dress (later, there was also a purple!), I couldn’t believe it- I have been looking for a dress like that for months for my upcoming birthday! I liked the concept of the clear shirts and jackets (looked almost like saran wrap- that’s how see through they were), but I’m not sure I would wear something that daring.

Ever since I saw a sequined jacket on Lauren Conrad, I’ve desperately been on the lookout for my own- so, when I saw a sequined gray blazer, I just about fell out of my seat-I am so adding that to my shopping list! Move over superman, Tumbler and Tipsy has made a cape even you would die for! Capes were so versatile-some were perfect for a cold day and looked super cozy, and others were covered in square sequins (Michael explained to me that he only uses these because they’re much prettier than regular ones. Also, he explained that if one falls off, the whole string of sequins doesn’t too!).

At the end of the show, Michael came out with an enor-mous smile, thanking and waving to the packed room. It’s pretty much a guarantee that we will be seeing more and more of Tumbler and Tipsy- on the street and the red carpet!

Nathanaelle-CoutureVICTORIAN INSPIRATION

Back in October 2011, at LAFW - Sunset Gower Studios, Nathanaelle Couture presented her new collection. The new collection brings her signature of classic feminine beauty with a Victorian inspiration to the runway. The sheer lace dresses and blouses reveal just the right amount with a seemingly modest elegance. Accented with satin waist bows, the dresses cling to some like a second skin and flow on others as if subtly wind blown.

Polka dots and floral patterns appeared in the collection in the form of more casual dresses and blouses wearable on almost any occasion. The Victorian inspired couture gown that wowed the crowd is a classic. Its elegant lace, accented with bows and satin-trimmed sheer fabric veiling the gown is the staple of beauty and classic femininity Nathanaelle is known for. At the conclusion of the show, Nathanaelle appeared with Amira Haines, a seven-year old girl who aspires to become a future fashion designer and assisted Nathanaelle with the collection. We admire Nathanaelle for supporting Amira and her passion for fashion.

It will put an edgeto your evening cocktail dress. I love the white handbag with black straps and red flower petals. The green briefcase style bag with metal lining and leaf embossing is quite cute. On a fun noteis the yellow duffel bag with pictures of shoes and the accompanying handbag. The last bag with mayan designs on it has a very stylish vintage feel.

Michelle’s collection can be mixed and matched, spans from comfortable to date night frocks, and boasts an array of stunning accessories. The line is perfectly tailored to fit all different shapes and sizes of women, making me truly aware that Lawren has created her line to be functional and beautiful with the contemporary woman in mind. The ensembles were perfect for us LA girls, with the perfect amount of color to make you pop out of a crowd. Michelle’s collection is comprised of separates and one pieces. I especially loved her short two-toned orange jumper- it screamed fall! It was paired with a short blazer and finished off with a skinny belt. It was interesting to see the print come out again- this time in a skirt, and matched with a polka dotted sleeveless top- an immensely different combination- yet, it worked so well! Here come the brights! Lime green and hot pink separates were paired with high wasted polka dotted shorts and pants and the look was polished and professional. I never would have thought neon and polka dots mixed well, but I was absolutely wrong. Michelle’s high wasted parachute pant stood out to me; paired with a crisp, white button down, these pants would be great for the office (plus, they looked ridiculously comfortable!). I enjoyed seeing the use of the lines’ mixing and matching of fabrics. A pink neon dress with leather detailing was extremely effective in portraying that “good girl with an edge” look. The detail along the neckline added some extra “oomph” to the average style of the dress.A huge theme of the line was khaki. Whether it was pants, a blouse, a skirt, a dress, or a full on pantsuit, the khaki alone or paired with the colorful blouses Lawren Michelle is known for were bold and beautiful.I just about died when I glanced at the runway and a light green short dress with a cut out in the front waltzed by me- the color, the shape- everything was fabulous! I would wear it alone, or with a boyfriend blazer in cold weather. Lawren’s royal blue based floral collection looked stunning on the models skin, and brought some added cheerfulness to the line. Michelle used this print in a dress (with cutouts, once again), and as a blouse paired with a royal blue, ruffled knee length skirt.Lawren Michelle’s flawless collection was a true success based on the fact that I, along with numerous other people that I spoke with, wanted to purchase everything on that runway. Check out Lawren Michelle’s line and get a universal wardrobe that will flatter any figure!

Age of Aquarius by Kristi Moon is an eco “street wear” line created in Los Angeles. Moon calls her line “Fashion forward, fly, futuristic, funky diva” and urges everyone who wears a piece to save the planet! The designs are casual, cut from sustainable, recycled and organic textiles, and dipped in rich, classic hues of low impact dyes. The line consists of sophisticated, trendy lounge wear separates and casual jackets. These pieces are comfortable and lounge-able, but should definitely not be associated with the typical Juicy sweat suit. These have much more edge and would absolutely appeal to a more fashion conscious crowd. Lets do a re-cap of some of my favorite pieces!

Capes are definitely in for the fall, and a colorful one is even better! The lines olive green cape with black lining makes a simple “jeans and a T-shirt” outfit trendy and edgy. Who knew denim could be so chic?! The lines denim inspired collection ranges from pants to dresses to jackets. The pieces are far from simple- each one is adorned with button detailing, zippers, bows, or ruffles. These adorable additions make the separates accessible for every type of woman; wear them to work, out, or for a luncheon… they would work perfectly for any occasion.

Cozy and chic, the lines grey cotton collection looks incredibly comfortable. Jumpsuits (off-the-shoulder!), rompers, and shorts, but my favorite piece is a bell sleeve cardigan. It fits beautifully- loose and cozy, this would be a staple piece for years and years.

If you dream of the perfect LBD, you are in luck! Age of Aquarius’ silk black dress is stunning. I was in love with the fit, and with a slit on the side, it has the ideal amount of sexy. The long white maxi dress is detailed with ruffles on the top and bottom. I especially liked the skinny girly straps and cool, breathable material.

All in all, I love the line, the vintage look, the materials and love the fact that it’s eco friendly. Well done, Age of Aquarius!

C Nice During Fashion Week last October, the LAFashion team was treated to an amazing show by the womens line, CNice. The show was all about bright colors and pastels, and CNice got it right as those are the “it” colors for the upcoming Spring season. As the show began, models walked out in tangerine and sea foam green tailored linen shirts, perfect for a hot summer day paired with shorts or boyfriend jeans. At the same time, and the material was perfectly breathable for the sweltering heat heading our way. In addition, tangerine is said to be one of Spring’s biggest trends, and CNice got it before all the magazines did—props to them!

Fabrics were clean cut but also girly. Models strutted down the runway clad in cotton blazers, skirts, dresses, and blouses. Each had detailing that made it it’s own. One skirt was lined in ruffles, and others were simple but paired with stylish belts and crop tops. My personal favorite was a ruffled tennis style dress with a simple top and intricate detailing on the bottom. It was paired with a thin scarf and flats—absolutely adorable for a Spring day at the beach or out to a fancy lunch with friends.

White, crisp strapless and thin strapped dresses were worn alone and also with pastel yellow jackets adorned with cute buttons. The dresses were simple and girly, some even finished with a thin clear lining on the bottom; other dresses were flirty with gathered detailing in the middle.

Towards the end of the show, I saw a dress that I was absolutely obsessed with. A simple, white one shoulder mid-length dress with a yellow belt looked stunning on the gorgeous model, but also was so versatile. I saw myself in it, my mom wearing it, and women of every shape and size wearing it. The loose fit hugged her body in the right places and was universally flattering. Two more models came out in similar dresses, one being strapless and detailed on the bottom, and one being thin strapped with a mix of sheer white and cotton separated by one another. It was sexy, fun, and classy at the same time.

If you’re looking for resort wear, stylish day wear, or even pieces to wear in the evening, CNice is the line for you. What a fabulous collection!

CULTURE2012swimwearI was excited to attend Culture Swimwear’s launch of its first collection for the Spring/Summer 2012 season at Los Angeles Fashion Week last year. Culture swimwear prides itself on their colorful prints and solid cover-ups that are made of recycled and vintage fabrics with crochet details. Culture Swimwear is also charitable! The line has teamed up with the Cambodian born organization Keokjay. Keokjay has created jobs and resources that give women with HIV/AIDS in Cambodia fair opportunities and wages, enabling them to build up a quality of life for themselves and their families while getting healthy. It also aids in sending their children to school and diminishing the cycle of poverty. Their collection is inspired by the free spirit and beauty of all women, and the fact that they help out those who are poverty stricken makes me adore the collection even more.

I officially was obsessing over the first suit to show up on the runway. It was an electric blue, printed one piece with the deepest V I have seen in years! The color was beautiful, the design was fun, and the fit was great. Another great one piece was a strapless tan number with a matching head band. I loved the details on this! The same print came out in strapless and halter bikini’s and I loved it.

Leopard is one of my favorite prints and I am loving it for the upcoming season. Strappy and strapless leopard print bikinis strutted down the runway, and the print was broken up by a stud-like print in gold. The patterns mix was different, unusual, and stunning. I loved the transparent cover up and head piece that one model wore.

Tribal appears again! A one piece with a low cut front and back was my favorite of them all. I would pair it with a loose pair of linen pants and stroll along the beach or to lunch. Usually, one pieces are not the most flattering suits, but this one flattered the model in all the right places. The print appeared again in bikinis in numerous different styles.

The finale model looked absolutely stunning in a tiny bikini with an elaborate headpiece. The headpiece was decorated with multi colored feathers and even had feathers hanging from it. It was delicate, intricate and looked amazing with the neutral toned swimsuit it accessorized.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the show and I was even more proud to support a brand that does its part by helping those who are less fortunate.

Beach Rays Swimwear’s vision is to bring that ‘feel good’ surf lifestyle and culture to the world through fashion and trend. The line is uber creative as the designers make each piece so that it can be mixed and matched. The line is young, fresh and creative, and the suits ranged from sexy to sophisticated. Last year at the LAFW SP/S 2012 a model waltzed down the catwalk in a tropical print two-piece with lace detailing on the top. The suit was reminiscent of feminine lingerie and was paired off right a trendy electric blue bag with massive bow detailing. I absolutely loved the next suit. It reminded me of a fifties pinup girl with its ruffled skirt bottom and push up wire halter-top. The cream color of the suit complemented the models dark skin and was extremely flattering. I especially liked the Navajo print (huge trend) one piece that had a side tie with a little lace peeking out of the top, adding a major element of sexiness to a normally simple one piece. If you’re a little more conservative but want an edge, this piece is perfect for you.

The audience was hit with an explosion of neon pink when models walked out with ruffled pink tops paired with bikini bottoms and neon pink hoop earrings. Pucci inspired pink tops were unique and different than the average bikini. A pink, black and white Pucci inspired print was used as a bikini and also as a one piece.

A purple and black color blocked one piece with a bustier style top was my favorite of the show. The color, detailing, and material made this a go-to suit for every shape and size. The SAME suit was even made into a two piece- stunning! All in all, the show had explosive energy and the crowd seemed to enjoy the music, collection and gorgeous models!

Appropriate for a pool part at a trendy hotel or at the beach in Miami, the next suit’s ruffled top could be worn as a halter or as a bandeau top. I am obsessed with the cream colored top mixed with a simple string bottom, a perfect mixture of sultry and sweet. Electric blue seems to be a favorite of Beach Rays- an electric blue zipper detailed piece was a HUGE hit in the crowd. I heard “oohs” and “ahhs” as this stunner walked out. The black zipper detailing really made this blue pop.

For all of you risk takers, if you really want to get noticed, Beach Ray’s animal print cut out one piece is the suit for you. Paired with flat army boots, this suit got attention with its pretty pastels. Multi-colored two pieces seemed to be a theme on the runway with tie bottoms and simple detailing; the models killed it and the suits flattered every one of them perfectly.

On Monday, October 17, Style Fashion Week began at the Vibiana, downtown Los Angeles. The first show was presented by Nicolita Swimwear who just set the runway on fire. The whole ambiance was just a perfect setting to showcase the Con Sabor Tropical Collection, Rumba Ruffles, Club Nautico and Off the Runway collections. The colors, designs, accessories and models made you feel like you are in Miami, or perhaps Havana, Cuba.

The colorful Cuban influence was refreshing to see and if you have not seen Nicolitas printed catalog yet, you are missing out on some amazing Latin romantic dreamscape imagery. Special Cubano celebrity guest, Ojani Noa, showed off the Nicolita Cuba Classic Boardshort for men. Models were accessorized with Bijou Tresor Jewelry , Chinese Laundry shoes (Hotline, Hotness and Whistle style ) and Tres Noir glasses. Hair and make up was just perfect, bringing lots of life and color to the whole setting.

Nicolita has become a celebrity favorite; A-listers including Beyonce, Kristen Cavallari, Rihanna, Tori Spelling and Britney Spears are among customers of the brand. Nicolita has set itself apart in the swimwear industry with a signature fit of “Cuban-style swimwear bottoms” designed for the curvaceous Latina figure. “Cuban-style bottoms are designed with more coverage on the hips, a heart-shaped backside and ‘no-pinch’ fit elastic,” said the designer Nicole Di Rocco.

Nicolita swimwear is definitely one of our favorites this season.

Kareena’s handmade tunics and kaftans are a must for any woman’s wardrobe. All of her designs are handmade from the finest silks and cottons. Most of the pieces were adorned with carefully placed semi-precious stones and others with sequence and shimmering embroidery creating dazzling necklines and sleeves. The hand embroidery is impeccable and the colors, spectacular.

From your basic blacks and whites to the bold mustards, greens, reds and turquoises that seem as if they came right out of the Brazilian Rainforest. The models sparkled down the runway in the sheer delicate tunics and kaftans adorning each woman so elegantly. The tie-dyes were a more casual hit, yet equally phe-nomenal to their more eloquent counterparts. The styles, each very unique, were worn with bikinis however one can surely see these not just as sexy beach wear, but a spectacular tunic for a night on the town. Jewelry is optional with these designs; they are quite the eye-catcher on their own.

Tunics and kaftans in a variety of designs ranging from subtle animal prints to Native American inspirations were just a few of the exotic patterns found in this new collection. When was it you first realized that you had a flare for fashion and wanted to be a designer?

Well, I knew I wanted to make clothes when I was around 11… My Dad, (Daddy-O) bought my first machine for Xmas at Wal-mart! But I didn’t know what it meant to be a Fashion Designer yet. I didn’t have access to Fashion Magazines, so I went purely off of feeling. I thought I would just own a little shop and alter clothing for people.

I used to tear things apart and re-make them before I went to school. I was always getting sent home for having on inappropriate clothing…I later realized it wasn’t inappropriate at all…It was just different and being from such a small town…they didn’t really know how to react to my differences .

Who is your style icon and why?

Honestly, I don’t have a Style Icon…I draw inspiration from many sources… I have favourite designers! Yves St. Laurent, Balenciaga, L.A.M.B. and W Magazine…is that a style icon? They are genius…they ALWAYS get it right!

Our Exclusive Interview with Kelly Nishimoto

66 MARCH 2012 - the Los Angeles Fashion

You started in Georgia, moving from South Beach to LA, why? Do you see yourself in the future in another fashion capitol like NY or Milan?

I began collecting dishes and other things I would need to live on my own when I was 15. I knew as soon as High School was over…I was leaving GA. Florida was the closest “Cool” place. I actually moved to Jacksonville first! I worked in retail at the time, so jobs were super easy for me to find. I worked at a clothing store called “Merry-go-Round” and then the shoe stores “Wild Pair” & “Bakers” I moved back to Atlanta to work for my Aunt during the 96 Olympics.

Soon after, I moved to West Palm Beach to manage Wet Seal and then moved to South Beach! There I worked for a clothing store on Ocean Drive called “Wild Things” and was the Day Manager the restaurant next door called Mangos. I then met Designer, Alvin Valley (who now lives in NY) and got my first taste of the REAL FASHION INDUSTRY!

I DO NOT ever see myself living in NY…Milan, maybe…if were just a summer home! California is pretty much my home. I can have a balanced life here…and as I get older, my priorities have changed…

Page 67: the Los Angeles Fashion magazine

Starting out as a designer is challenging. Describe a time during your fashion studies your work was criticized and how you reacted?

The only criticism I have really received was doubt. People doubted that I could make my own business work…people doubted some of my business decisions….they doubted my collections. One thing I have on my side is strength & originality. My strength helped me brush off the negativity and doubt and my creativity kept me dreaming

I also bar tended for FOREVER! I thought I would never be able to quit and so did everyone else…And people in the Bar Business didn’t take my fashion very seriously…Urgh!

What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?

Whew! Learn as much about business and the psychology of people as you can! Fashion is 90% Business and 10% Design& Fun.

Also…be true to yourself and stay firm on who you are and what you believe in. People are constantly trying to cross the lines…they lie, they cheat, they steal, they deny…GO WITH YOUR GUT! It’s always right! And the minute you ignore that instinct…is the time when people take advantage of you…

Oh! And have everyone who crosses your path sign a confidentiality agreement!!!!! And protect yourself as much as you can against design thieves! Also…enjoy the process…try to have fun even when things get tough! Trust me…It’s better to work for yourself

You grew up in an artistic family. Do your mother’s jewellery designs influence your ideas and might you see jewellery becoming an aspect of future collections?

My Mother’s passion for design influences me…but the relationship with my mother is not typical. So when I think of accomplishing my goals and dreams…my mother is NOT the 1st person that comes to my mind. My Father is my biggest influence. He was always building something out of nothing. He is a super creative man…and I learned a lot about construction and doing things the right way from him. I do, however, see jewellery in my future…I would like to explore the shoe world first though…

Any plans for designing any new corset collections from your original ideas?

I LOVE corsets…and I do try to incorporate them into my collections when I can. As far as a full collection of corsets…Sounds over-whelming at the moment! I have a million things going on right now

Is there a possibility of creating a line for men in the future?

Everyone always asks that! I would LOVE to do a men’s line. But I have to focus on the tasks at hand! I need to ensure the success of my women’s line before I venture in to a completely different market. Trust me, my man would be happy!

What can we expect to see in your Fall/Winter collection?

Whimsy & Drama I love darker collections…I have the ability to be more free when designing Fall/Winter/Holiday. I’m still waiting on inspiration! I haven’t let myself down so far…so I expect a solid collection…I’m just waiting on my brain to dream it up!

As a designer, Sue Wong anticipates the debut of her Fall 2012 line this coming March. Let’s revisit her last event at the Voyeur Lounge in West Hol-lywood: Held October 13th , 2010, the Lady or Vamp was the private celebration and showing of select pieces from the Spring 2012 line.

Guests arrived to posh seating areas and tables topped by floral arrangements and complimentary beverages. Servers came around with freshly prepared hors d’oeuvres to supplement the appetizing cheeses, fruits, and cakes lining the bar area.

In lieu of the traditional runway show, models followed a predetermined course which weaved them through the venue and onto elevated platforms. Such an ap-proach encouraged a more intimate interaction with a crowd that included Twilight director, Bill Condon and actors Dayo Okeniyi and Raven Symoné. The effect of what was essentially a moving display proved dynamic, amplified by a dramatic soundtrack, tracks personally chosen by the designer. And what could the audience expect to observe? Up close, the intricate detailing of each gown could be appreciated in full. Skirts of plain satin, textured chiffon, feathers, and laser-cut organza petals supported the focal points: heavily beaded and embroidered motifs. By the end of the evening, each of the nine models had shown off six dazzling looks. Perhaps more impressively, their hair, headpieces, and makeup remained consistent and still cohesive throughout outfit rotations. Beaded and rhinestone bindis had been arranged on their foreheads to subtly suggest a crucifix, reinforcing the collection’s darker imagery.

On the other side were characteristically feminine gowns in seasonally appro-priate creams, corals, and greens. The seamless alternation between the two aesthetics was the final product of Sue Wong’s “study in contrasts, inspired by the dual archetypes of the elegant, beautiful lady and the sultry, seductive vamp”.

Sue Wong’s Spring 2012 line can be purchased at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstroma, and Bloom-ingdales, among other retailers.

2012 GlaudiUp and coming designer, Johana Hernandez presented her Glaudi collection at the Project Ethos last year during LA Fashion Week. I rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in the industry and all of us were there for the same reason-to support a new breed of LA designers. The mu-sic, art direction and overall vibe of the show was unique from any I’ve seen, and I truly believe that after seeing Hernandez’s collection, she’ll absolutely become a household name. She was the only hispanic designer that showed a collection at this event, highlighting why so many Latino celebrities joined her in support of her new line.

Glaudi is known for being an avant-garde and highly detailed line that has received praise from numerous Latina celebrities such as Susie Castillo, Fernanda Romero, and Anahi. Celebs have worn the collection on the red carpet, on TV, in movies, and at photo shoots. The line, which can be interpreted as both elegant and sexy is perfect for a night out on the town or for a star studded award show.

Glaudi’s fall collection was beyond glamorous. Each dress had its own personality and those personalities were anything but tame. To start, Hernandez showcased her love for black with corseted tops, ruffles and once again, what I predict to be a huge trend for fall, the A-Line skirt. Some of her corsets were covered in crystals with short feathered skirts attached- absolutely stunning to say the least. She also seemed to lean towards Lady Gaga inspired looks with models clad in one shouldered, structured tight dresses in emerald green, gold with glitter, and lots of fringe and tassles. One model even came out in mirrored glasses (if that doesn’t say Gaga, i don’t know what does). Many of Glaudi’s dresses were simple in color, but with revealing cut out’s, the collection was anything but simple. For the finale, a model walked out in a purple sequined leotard with a flowing mermaid style skirt attached. It was open in the front and in the back, showing just the right amount of leg.

In the end, Hernandez walked out with a huge smile on her face and electrifying energy to thank her fans. She looked radiant in one of her own creations- a royal blue sparkled top paired with a unique fringed skirt. Kudos to her- I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot more of Glaudi in the near future.

One of the Great things about Los Angeles is our truly multi-faceted culture, and that transfers to the fashion industry as well. A great example is Bohemian Society. Bohemian Society makes truly wearable art.

Victor Wilde, who has mixed art with fashion, creat-ing wearable art that definitely makes a statement, founded this Los Angeles based label in 2003. Wilde has worked with a plethora of mediums to include but not limit to painting, film, sculpture and design. Clearly he has brought this lifetime of experience to the Bohemian Society’s unique fashion designs. Each outfit in the 2012 Collection is truly a one of a kind. The tops, bottoms and dresses combined with a variety of accessories and jewelry, creating a, well, truly Bohemian style. Fabrics used rage from vintage parachutes to recycled vintage attire. The runway shows were more like art installations with models wearing the art.

Bohemian Society now has a store called The Bru-tique located at The Last Bookstore on Spring Street in Downtown LA. The Brutique is open by appoint-ment only and if you want something designed just for you, they will even create a one of a kind custom design suited solely to you. Bohemian Society is definitely a movement of its own. If this sounds like you, the eccentric unique style intrigues you, and you want a style to call your own, visit their website at www.bohemiansociety.com and join. One of the Great things about Los Angeles is our truly multi-faceted culture, and that transfers to the fashion industry as well.
