Year 9 Body, Mind & Soul DayThe Year 9s Body, Mind & Soul Day was held last Friday with many engaging activities for all students.

The first session, run by the YOUTH team, included team building activities with each activity designed to build our relationships within our class and show how, in many different situations, communication is key within a group. The exercises consisted of trying to make the tallest marshmallow tower, our arms being tangled up and having to untangle ourselves, making an enjoyable war cry for our class and lastly walking on an obstacle course blindfolded. Every activity made our class stronger and gave us the opportunity to become closer as a group with characteristics such as trust and honesty being strengthened.

In the second session, girls and boys were separated for a serious conversation about social media and the creation of Photoshop. Both topics were very relevant as teenage girls especially need to stop trusting everything they see on the internet, and that showing your true and authentic self is way better then posting something only for the 'likes'. We were exposed to the importance of confidence and the impact it can have on our lives if we stick to building up others and not bringing them down for our own self esteem. In this session girls had the ability to say what they felt as we made it a 'no judgement zone'. As a result, Year 9 girls became closer as a group.

For the last part of the day the YOUTH girls’ team set up a picnic for the girls, where we sat with our friends and enjoyed some food, while listening to personal stories from three of the YOUTH girls. They spoke about three key elements that girls will go through in their lives and how having a good outlook on life can influence those times. They were; relationships and friendships, nutrition, and mental illnesses arising from being in a negative space. The stories shared made everyone connect on a deeper level. Positivity had been the main word within the session and around it we had made our own personalised affirmations (quotes) that we shared such as Old Ways Don’t Open New Doors.

Body, Mind & Soul Day brought the Year 9 cohort together and showcased how important it is to be close to our peers and develop respectful relationships with our classmates as the people we’re with now are our family for the next couple years.

Practical Look At The Web Of LifeLast Monday, Year 12 biology students and I went on an ecology excursion for two full days to visit several ecosystems in the Gold Coast region.

These ecosystems included: mangroves, sand dunes, headlands and rocky shores which we all visited and physically explored. This allowed us to observe the ecosystems closely and helped us to understand how they all create a habitat for plants and organisms to thrive in. The field trip was very practical, in that we didn’t shy away from getting a little muddy, sandy and wet to get the most out of the camp. After a day out at the mangroves and sand dunes, we headed out for a night walk up the Burleigh Headlands and saw some amazing views of the Gold Coast and the night sky.

The next day we spent in the rocky shores, venturing through each tidal zone and observed and held most of the organisms that call the rocky shores home. There was plenty of food to keep us fuelled throughout the two days and was overall a great opportunity and experience to educate us for our ecology exam.
