HORNBY HELPLINE
We are here to assist the residents of the parish of Hornby with Farleton with a variety of issues including:
· Trips to the Doctors, Hospital or Vets · Minor home repairs · Computer problems · Help after illness or surgery
ASKING FOR HELP
a) Phone the Institute Monday – Saturday between 10.00am and 12.00pm (015242 22227) to ask for what you need.
If the job requires transport to be arranged, please could you give 48 hours’ notice, and more notice would be even more appreciated.
(I’m afraid that we can’t run as an emergency service as the coordinators and volunteers aren’t always free to respond immediately. Some are at work and others may just be out for the day.)
b) Please don’t ask the volunteer who helps you the first time to come on subsequent occasions as we try to spread out every-one’s tasks equally. Just phone the Institute as above.
Please note that whilst we don’t offer a taxi service, if you are having genuine difficulty attending functions IN THE VILLAGE or are afraid to go out after dark then please give us a call.

HORNBY INSTITUTE ROOF APPEAL The Institute roof is leaking and causing damage to the ceilings of some of the upstairs rooms. The water ingress may develop into seri-ous decay if left unattended. A completely new roof is not required, only targeted repairs.
The estimated cost of repairs is about £22,000. HVT Trustees are working to obtain grant funding, but even if this is successful it is clear that funds will still be needed from the community.
Details of the problem, and information about the Roof Appeal, and
associated fundraising can be found in the Carnegie room, and on the

HORNBY POOL More good news!
A very good start to the new decade with more public swimmers taking full advantage of the range of activities on offer.
Because of this we have been able to revise some of our earlier cost reduction measures. Saturday Morning swims - Following several requests, we have re-instated Saturday morning sessions starting on “Leap Year Day” Saturday 29th February with lane swimming 9am - 10am and public swimming from 10am -11am. Saturday afternoon is available for private family bookings. Parent &Toddler - We’ve introduced a brand-new Parent & Toddler 30-minute ‘Splashing Tots’ swim session. This fun, pre-school, splash-around session is aimed at parents with pre-school aged children. This includes exclusive use of our 30°C UV treated pool with vari-ous toys, floats and small inflatables to play with along to children's music and nursery rhymes.
Lifeguard on duty. Tuesdays 11.30am - 12pm. £2.50 per child, adults FREE. It’s already very popular!
Authorised admission policy - One responsible adult can supervise two under 5’s in the water. The new management team is confident that 2020 will see continued improving viability to ensure a bright future for this lovely pool and if we are missing other opportunities please let us know. It's your pool, tell us what you think.

HORNBY ST MARGARET’S C.E. PRIMARY SCHOOL
What a busy start to the year in school! The children have been working incredibly hard, retelling traditional tales, writing onomatopoeic poems, learning algebra, building model houses out of different material to test durability, painting Lowry inspired pictures and learning all about India.
One highlight of the term so far has been the Young Voices Concert. After weeks of rehearsal the Juniors had the incredible opportunity to sing with 8500 other children, Tony Hadley, The Shires and the winner of The Voice (2018) at Manchester Arena. The atmosphere was awesome, and the children had an amazing time. Contd.

HORNBY PENSIONERS’ ASSOCIATION
A Big Thank You to all members who braved a very windy evening to attend our AGM and Jacob's Join Supper in February. The business part of the evening was soon completed and we are delighted that Anne Nash has vol-unteered to join our Committee. Otherwise it remains un-changed. It was agreed that in future our evening meetings and coffee morning refills should be free, and that the Christmas Party should be free to members aged 90 and over.
March Meeting: at 7pm on Tuesday 10th, Sue Seddon is coming to tell
us some “Tales of Morecambe Bay”.
Advance Notice: Please note that our April meeting will be on the 7th,
which is the FIRST Tuesday of the month, when Joanne Halliwell will be relating the latest adventures of “The Scullery Maid”. Always a very popular occasion.
Games Evenings: This month our Whist and Dominoes evenings in Hornby Institute will be on Saturdays 7
th and 21
st March. Admission
including light refreshments and 2 free raffle tickets costs £2. Play starts at 7pm promptly, and everybody is very welcome.
A few days after the concert the Juniors were able to go caving at Rib-blehead. What a great contrast – a huge arena in a massive city to tiny cave in the Yorkshire Dales!
Congratulations to the Lower Junior Football Team who won the Lune Valley Schools Football Tournament this month! The Upper Juniors also put on an impressive performance but were pipped at the post in a penalty shoot-out.
Although it seems a while ago now, the PTA would like to thank every-one for their support at the Christmas Fair. They made over £800 and have already made plans to buy some new reading books across the school. Your support really makes a difference! Thank-you.
The next event on the PTA calendar is our annual jumble sale. If you have anything to donate, then please drop it off in school from Monday 9
th March. Hope to see you there!
School is now using Facebook to share some photos of different activi-ties. Feel free to check it out! www.facebook.com/hornbystmargarets

our Instute roof! If not repaired soon, the water ingress may cause serious
decay. (A completely new roof is not required, only targeted repairs).
The esmated cost of repairs is about £22,000. Excellent fund-raising pro-
gress has been in the last few weeks (see below), but an applicaon for grant
funding was turned down. The fund currently stands at £2,200, and so
further fund raising is urgently needed if we are to save this valuable

PROBUS CLUBS Founded in the UK in the 1960s Probus Clubs were constituted, usual-ly sponsored by Rotary, for retired and semi-retired people from all walks of life. The title PROBUS is derived from PROfessional & BUSiness and appropriately this word has links with the Latin for probity. Members meet up in non-political, non-sectarian, non-profit, autono-mous clubs to meet colleagues with similar levels of interest, make new friends, and maintain and expand their interests. Clubs can be Male, Female or Mixed to suit the local membership. Hornby Lunesdale Probus and Hornby Castle Probus Clubs Our two local clubs meet on most alternate Monday mornings through-out the year at the Hornby Village Institute. Who are we and what do we do? Primarily we meet up and enjoy a programme of wonderful presenta-tions by guest speakers on a wide variety of interesting and entertain-ing subjects. These can be very stimulating, and we learn a lot of really fascinating stuff from our excellent speakers and lively debate. We are a friendly bunch and some members stay behind after the meeting for an optional light lunch and an informal catch up. We also organise occasional great-value day trips and short breaks for members, partners and guests. But mainly we just meet, enjoy an enlightening presentation, catch up on the local news and solve all the problems of the world- all in a couple of hours! There is a small annual membership fee and an attendance charge for coffee & room hire etc. at each meeting. We have a small volunteer committee but no formal ceremonies or rituals, no fund-raising or minimum attendance requirements - just fellowship. Interested? Why not come along, without any obligation, to one of our meetings? If you would like further information or wish to attend as a guest, please contact: Roger Carter Hon.Sec. Lunesdale Probus Club on 015242 22283.

MORECAMBE BAY FOODBANK Many thanks to all who donated so generously at Christmas. This was much appreciated. In addition to the nutritionally based boxes of food that were available for those in need who attended the Foodbank in the week before Christmas, as a result of the generous donations from members of the public and many local supermarkets, 300 extra Christmas bags were made up by additional volunteers and were distributed, through linked agencies, to families identified as being in need. Numbers coming to the Foodbank on Tuesdays and Fridays are increasing and there is a continued need for tinned food, biscuits, instant potato, tea, jam, pasta sauce. At the moment there is a good supply of baked beans, pasta, chickpeas and red kidney beans.
