November 2014 Scorpios are extremely dynamic and energetic. They are given to powerful
emotional extremes and are often driven by a powerful internal desire to achieve.
Scorpios make excellent leaders because their desire to achieve greatness
outweighs all else. Scorpios have a great love of life -- and they excel at most

Scorpios tend to be very popular and well-liked. Their natural dynamism and high energy level are
attractive qualities. They excel at athletics and competition of all kinds. They make natural leaders and
are often looked up to as role-models in their fields.
Scorpios are also excellent problem-solvers, and are unlikely to "give up" when obstacles appear in
their paths.
In the workplace, Scorpios are frequently found at the top. They tend to be aggressive, and goal-
oriented -- stopping at nothing to achieve their personal success. They also tend to be vindictive and
combative to anyone who stands in their path.
Scorpios are extremely observant and analytical and like the desert scorpion, are extremely good at
spotting opportunities others may have missed.
Scorpios tend to set their sights on someone they want to be with -- and stop at nothing until that
person is theirs. They are extremely passionate, emotional and given to intense relationships. When a
Scorpio finally settles into a relationship, they tend to become much calmer and more balanced people -
- but the road to that stability can be a bumpy one, full of emotional outbursts, passion and sometimes
heartbreak.

2 B4RN Broadband for Hornby & Farleton
B4RN for Hornby and Farleton is a community project that is working to bring the hyperfast B4RN broadband service to Hornby and Farleton. At present, the team is working hard to finalize route details with landowners. The route from Wray to Farleton is close to being finalised and over 750m of duct has been moled into the ground on this route. Weather permitting, there should be plenty of digging for the volunteers over the coming weeks. Hornby-with-Farleton Parish Council – October 2014 Meeting Stuart Booth from JWPC Limited attended the meeting regarding the proposed development in Hornby. He represented his client who is currently developing proposals for providing new housing to the northern end of Hornby. The main concern raised by the Councillors was that the proposed access is off Royal Oak Meadow which they did not feel was at all suitable. The Highways Department will be invited to a site visit to discuss this further. Another planning application had been received regarding the erection of 9 dwellings on Station Road. Once again, the main concern was access to this site, therefore the Highways Department will also be asked to attend a site visit to discuss this further. 2 new seats for the cradle seat swing will be ordered for the playground. The Highways Department and Environmental Health will be contacted once again regarding the condition of the old hairdressers on Station Road. A complaint has been received regarding the quantity and speed of vehicles using the farm lane next to the Institute. The Parish Council cannot be directly involved with this matter due to the fact that this is private land. However, if anyone manages to note particulars of any vehicles being driven inconsiderately on this lane, then we would ask that this information is passed on to the police. More detailed minutes will be available in the folder in the Institute and on the Hornby website - www.hornbyvillage.org.uk, once approved at the next meeting. The next Parish Council meeting will take place on Thursday 13
th November at
7:45pm in Hornby Institute. Anyone who wishes to attend would be most welcome. An agenda will be displayed in each of the Parish notice boards on Sunday 9

Autumn Clothes Swish Many thanks to all who came to BUY, and or SELL items at the evening event. Almost £400 was raised for the Institute. There were more sellers than
buyers!! Remaining clothes were delivered to the Ukrainian Choir, and some have gone to a dress agency, so there may be a further trickle of funds. Anne Lee

Hello all – I just wanted to thank everybody in the village for the kindness you have shown
me since Shaun’s heart attack. I feel so lucky to be part of such a caring community that has
enabled me to visit Shaun in Wythenshawe Hospital every day since the attack in September.
Shaun is doing well but requires a heart transplant. He is now listed on the urgent transplant
list and we await the call to say a heart is available.
Because of the heart attack I didn’t manage to run the great north in September – I have
managed to speak to most people who sponsored me and want to thank you for allowing me to
donate monies collected in to St John’s Hospice – I also gave in the money from my august
coffee morning and the total the hospice got (including gift aid) was £259. 45. Thank you so
much for your support in this fundraising too.
MacMillan Coffee Morning
Hornby St Margaret’s Primary School PTA would like to thank all those who made the MacMillan Coffee Morning a success and helped to raised £371.12 for the deserved charity.
Thank you all who came along on the morning and enjoyed coffee, cakes and biscuits with us and all those who gave so generously. Many thanks go to the school for allowing us to host the event and to all the pupils who helped on the morning. Special thanks go to our supportive local businesses who gave such kind raffle prizes. A huge thank you to parents and friends for their donations of cakes and biscuits and many thanks to the PTA members, past and present, for all your valuable help on the day. You are all very much appreciated.
FOCUS SCHOOL – HORNBY CAMPUS Hello Hornby Contact readers, we hope those that attended our Coffee Morning in
September enjoyed it. The event was organised by year 10 with help from their
parents. Altogether we raised about £300.00 for the Albania Music School and the
Bethany Orphanage in Tanzania.
Lego Man came to visit the juniors on 25th September; they made some marvellous
creations from his Lego workshops. Some juniors said it was “Absolutely awesome” and “really
great fun”.
On Thursday 2nd October year 7 went on a visit to Vindolana, as part of their History lessons.
Some students commented that it was “very interesting, wish we could have done some
excavating! I would definitely go again”.
The week beginning 6th October was Languages week. Students were taught a range of lan-
guages from Swedish to Chinese. Mrs Midgley from Wray talked to the juniors about how to
speak in Arabic.
This month, Discovery House are having a Table Tennis Tournament as a way of raising money
for the Albania Music School.
4 Rotary Club of Lunesdale
During the past month members have been busy attending the Charter Evenings of other
clubs. This is when a club celebrates its birthday and it provides an opportunity to visit
other clubs, meet friends and enjoy rotary fellowship. It is also a chance for the ladies to
dress up!
The visit of the children from Belarus on 16th September was a very successful and
happy day. Our RC was pleased to organise a day of carefree fun and entertainment for 11girls and 8 boys
who are brought to the Uk on holiday by "The Friends of Chernobyl's Children". We took them to
Ingleborough Cave at Clapham (a big adventure in a mysterious underground world full of stalagmites and
stalactites and strange shapes and sounds) had lunch at the Bunk House at Clapham, then on to Kirkby
Lonsdale for an enthralling hour long magic show followed by afternoon tea, the presentation of a cuddly
toy and bags full of goodies. Finally, reluctantly we said our goodbyes. The children aged 7 -9 years
enjoyed lots of fun and laughter. A huge thank you to all those people who made a donation, in some form
or other, which helped to make this a wonderful day for these little ones all of whom come from
disadvantaged backgrounds. If you would like to see photos of this special day please look at our website

around the world) continues to be excellent. Thank you so much to all those who have donated. Please call

Another huge thank you to everyone who made a contribution to the appeal "£1 buys a pair of Flipflops".
The generosity to this appeal, which is to buy a pair of Flipflops for children in the village of Kitale,
Uganda has been incredible. In the village most children are barefooted and the soles of their feet are bitten
by the Chigoe (Jigger) bug causing dreadful infection. In Oct/Nov, 2 club members will spend time in this
village when one of their projects is to ensure that all the children will have flip flops to protect and keep
their feet healthy. The flip flops will be bought at a nearby market in Jinja. More about the trip to Uganda
and Malawi in the next issue.
On November 14th Club members will be at Booths collecting for Children In Need. Please do come and
say Hello and have a chat and join in the fun and the spirit of the day. Watch out for The Rotary Club
escorting Father Christmas on his Sleigh when he visits your village.

November is Will Aid Month when anyone can get a will made by a
solicitor for a voluntary donation. For information go to

Hornby Institute needs your help.
The structure and future of Hornby Village Institute depends on the generosity
of its supporters. It costs about £70000 a year to run and maintain the Institute.
This is over £1000 a week. In reading this information on legacy-giving (also
known as gift-giving) we hope that we can introduce you to a way in which your
long-term support can help us to maintain, and enhance the Institute for future
generations.
How you can help
People from Hornby and beyond generously help run the Institute and the or-
ganisations that use it during their lifetimes. By extending your support and
leaving a gift, no matter how small, to the Institute in your Will you can help us
to ensure that this unique building in Hornby may be enjoyed by generations to
come.
Making a Will
The only way we can ensure that our wishes are met when we die is by making a
Will. Leaving things to chance may mean that the State could take everything
and those we care about are left with nothing to remember us by. Although it is
possible to make your own Will, it is advisable, especially if your wishes are not
straightforward, to consult a solicitor or to use a Will-writing service. Either
should ensure that your Will is legal and valid. We recognise that making a Will
can often be a difficult and sensitive area. Some brief notes are included below:
When making a Will you may wish to include specific gifts of cash or of posses-
sions such as jewellery or objects d’art or of land and buildings. The Will then
makes provision for the remainder of your assets (the residuary estate) which
may be left to one beneficiary or may be divided up and shared by a number of
beneficiaries.
After providing for your relatives, dependants and others close to you, you may
wish to make a gift to Hornby Village Trust which is responsible for the mainte-
nance and running of the Institute.
Hornby Village Trust is a registered charity. All gifts to charities are free from
Inheritance Tax
You might like to download a template letter that you could modify to send to
your solicitor from the trust website. This is only draft letter that you may find
useful to instruct your solicitor to include a bequest to a charity, such as the
Hornby Village Trust Hornby Lancaster. What your solicitor will have to do for
your will depend on many things, such as whether you have an existing Will, if
the Will is in one name or more, etc.

Countryside Society
On Friday 17th October Robin McIlveen gave a superb talk on “Climate Change,
Past, Present and Future”. With excellent slides he illustrated the amazing variability
of weather systems at present in various parts of the world. He explained clearly the
abstract concept of the Global Atmospheric Annual Surface Temperature (GAAST).
In modern times this can be obtained from actual observations, but surprisingly it can
be estimated for prehistoric times from studies of the deep ice in Greenland and Ant-
arctica. The picture which emerges is that for most of the earth’s existence the
GAAST has been much warmer than the present 15 degrees Celcius, more like 25
degrees, but then cooled and oscillated, causing a series of ice ages, and now is rising
at about 1 degree per century. Sea level averaged over the whole earth changes with
the GAAST, and is predicted to rise at about half a metre per century. Robin stated
that approximately 90 % of scientists working in this field believe that a significant
part of this is related to human activity. He showed a dramatic graph of carbon diox-
ide concentration in the atmosphere since the start of the Industrial Revolution. The
very appreciative audience thanked Robin most warmly for a splendid but sobering
presentation.

7.45 pm on Friday 21st November,
when Tom Lord will give an illustrated talk on “Caring for Butterflies on an upland
Dales farm”.

Hornby Flower Club Helen and Ann from Greenfoot Garden Centre in Wray were our guest presenters in
October. They brought with them an impressive array of colourful pots and plants
and proceeded to show us how to get the most from each container for now and into
the spring.
In each container place a good layer of compost then some bulbs, more compost
followed by another layer of bulbs and so on (depending on the size of the
container). The final planting at the top is something showy for now such as violas,
heathers or other winter hardy plants.
For our November meeting we look forward to a return visit by Joan Bentley from
Cartmel whose theme is A Winter Wonderland. Joan is a very talented flower
arranger-demonstrator and earlier this year was awarded a British Empire Medal for
services to charity and the community of Grange-over-Sands.
We hope you will join us on Thursday the 20th November at 7.30pm in Hornby
Institute.

Hornby Probus Club visit Manchester for Christmas markets and the NDO ‘Christmas show’ at RNCM.
Wednesday 10th December. Attracting shoppers from all over the UK and beyond, the Christmas Market has become not just a fabulous place to shop but also a popular leisure destination in its own right. Wander through the chalet-lined streets of the markets which are located in different spaces around the city. Over 300 stalls with gifts, craftwork and mouth-watering delicacies from all over Europe. Treat yourself to anything from Dutch mini pancakes, to Hungarian goulash to Spanish paella to French profiteroles. Relax with a hot chocolate, German or Spanish beer, or French wine. Soak up the atmosphere of a truly international event with a uniquely Mancunian flavour. (wrap up warm!) We then transfer to The Royal Northern College of music for a tribute concert to the much loved BBC Northern Dance Orchestra (NDO). It’s just over 40 years ago since the NDO last per-formed but much of their library has been saved and the RNCM Big Band will be re- creating this great band on the night of Wednesday 10th December. We will have excellent best reserved seating and there is also an optional pre- concert talk and review at 6.30 pm

VICTORIA INSTITUTE, CATON IT COURSES We have had a few queries about using IPads and Tablets in general. Our IT Tutor, Lyn Shar-man, would be willing to run a workshop on this theme, so please get in touch if you are inter-ested in attending. Given sufficient ‘learners’, we would aim to run a programme in the New Year. PHOTOCOPYING AND INTERNET SERVICES The IT Room and Drop In services are available in the Victoria Institute. Opening times are 9.30 – 3.30 weekdays. We have computers with Internet access, and a ‘multi-function’ printer which also serves as a photocopier and scanner. In August two of the Brownie Leaders – Alison and Claire undertook a visit to the World Guiding
Centre in India – Sangam where they took part in a community project. On Tuesday the 18th of
November they are giving a presentation about their trip at 7pm in the Foster Suite at the Insti-
tute. The Guides will be serving tea and cake and there will be a raffle. Entrance cost is £2.50 and all
proceeds from the evening will support the ‘Days for Girls’ Uganda project that is covered separately in
this Contact.
What have the girls been up to?
Our Units have all been busy! Along with girls from Caton units they participated in a Lune Valley
District Day and Camp Over at Silverdale in September, celebrating 100 years of Brownies. This was
the first time under canvas for the Brownies! The theme was the 100 year anniversary since world war
one and activities included: make do and mend, cooking dampers on the camp fire, code breaking, field
hospital role play and eating ration style food.
The following w/end [No rest for us leaders!], seven of the Brownies attended a North West Region 100
year Brownie celebration at Chester Zoo. This was a real adventure, travelling by train from Lancaster
with bed roll and ruck sac, changing trains at Warrington and catching the bus from Chester Station to
the zoo. We slept [slept is probably not quite a true description!], in an enormous marquee with around
1, 400 other Brownies and leaders, did a lantern lit walk around the zoo at night where we had a close
encounter with a roaring lioness [not use to night visitors!], were introduced to the Chief Guide [modern
day Baden-Powell] and had all of Saturday at the zoo. It was all very exciting and I don’t think any of
the Brownies or the leaders will forget the experience which was covered on the national news.
The youngest members - Rainbows are currently doing their ‘All about me’ roundabout badge – discov-
ering similarities and differences about themselves and others. They have found out that Rainbows in
Portugal and Thailand are called ‘Little Birds’ and in Japan they are Tenderfoot Girl Scouts! Rainbows
in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates can see the tallest building in the world with 163 floors!
The Brownies have been learning about Brownie Traditions – how things have changed since their lead-
ers & mothers were Brownies and which aspects remain unchanged. They compared old badges and
uniform with current ones. They spent an evening hearing about life in India and trying their hand at
some Indian art. Now the girls are working on the toy maker’s badge which began with making a sock
puppet.
The Guides are working towards awards: Baden Powell, Commonwealth and Camp permits. They are
planning their coffee morning for the 8th of November to raise funds for the Institute. They enjoyed do-
ing some fused glass work with a certain local craftswoman – creating poppy pictures to commemorate
the 100 year anniversary since the First World War began.
Vacancies : All of our units currently have vacancies for girls. Guiding gives girls a great girls only
space where they can take part in a wide range of activities and awards. They will also be part of the
biggest international organisation for girls and women. They can progress on to leadership roles which
are a great thing in themselves and can also help them get jobs/university places.
We are also always on the lookout for leaders to assists with groups in Hornby, Caton and Arkholme

Visit to Uganda – Days for Girls – help needed! In January I am joining Dr Simon Kaye and his group on their medical mission visit to Uganda.
I am focusing my efforts in the lead up to the trip on ‘Days for Girls.’ Whilst there I will be handing out
the sanitary kits and helping to educate the girls about their use.
Did you know that most girls in Uganda do not have access to any sanitary supplies? This means that
they miss school for five days a month. They gradually fall further and further behind and are liable to
drop out of school. Without a good education their chances of obtaining employment are poor. This
often leads to early marriage and motherhood and so the cycle of poverty continues.
Days for Girls sanitary kits empower girls in Uganda and other areas of the world to continue their edu-
cation and improve their opportunities. Lasting up to three years means they can give girls an extra 180
days at school.
I want to make and take out at least 100 kits but I can’t do it by myself! I have done assemblies with all
year groups at my former school LGGS and the girls have been asked to bring in new flannels, knickers
and travel soaps to go in the kits.
I am hoping the local community will help to make the draw string bags, shields and liners to complete
the kit, so.......
Calling all sewing machine users On Thursday, the 13th of November from 10am till 4pm (or whatever portion of that time you are avail-
able) please come along to The Foster Suite at Hornby Institute with your machine.
We will show you the different elements of the kit and give the instructions for making them.
We will provide material and sewing thread but if anyone wants to contribute supplies we would appre-
ciate that. Fabric needs to be 100% woven (quilters) cotton for the shields, the same or poly cotton for
the bags. It needs to be medium to dark in colour and patterned – preferably with geometrics, botanicals
or batiks and sewing thread needs to be 100% polyester. This is to ensure it will be acceptable culturally
and that it will last. We will provide the waterproof material which goes into the shield. The liners are

If you are able to stay all day bring a packed lunch or nip out to use local services. We will provide
drinks on arrival, at lunch and drinks & cake mid – afternoon.
We hope that sewers will then make some of the items at home or with groups of friends over the next
month. If any helpers need an evening or w/end session please let us know. Offers of help cutting out
prior to the day and assembling the packs late Dec/early Jan are also most welcome.

Girlguiding News – November 2014: What have we been
up to?
Leaders:
Two of our young leaders Lois Preece and Alice Roberts recently com-
pleted their adult leadership award. Lois is away at bible school in Ger-
many but Alice was presented with her badge and certificate and also her
Senior Section holiday permit during the Lancaster & Garstang Division
A.G.M at Lancaster Castle. During the evening we were able to visit the A wing of the former prison – a
salutary reminder to stay on the straight and narrow!
We really value the input of our young leaders – aged 14 to 18. Lois and Andrea Harvey, who has gone
to Aberdeen University to study dietetics have both been with us for three years and have been a real
asset, we wish them well. We are pleased to welcome back Chelsea Seber as a young leader at Guides
following illness and to have continued help from Hannah Booth.
At Brownies we now have Danielle Harrison and Imogen Benson who hope to complete the leadership
qualification. The input of Meg, Sian and Heather (all former Brownies & Guides) at Rainbows is a real
support to Alice who is taking temporary charge whilst leader Rachel Fisher has taken some time out
due to the serious illness of her husband Shaun.
