Life is a diary and each page is an incident of life. It is very important for us to write a diary as it keeps on indicating the follies and mistakes we make in our life. In fact, we don’t achieve success in our life because we don’t remember the mistakes that we have done in our life—this is the reason why we repeat the same mistakes most of the time and keep on losing the direction of the destination.

The diary reminds us what we have done, why we could not get success, and how we have to plan for the next attempt; we can get to know everything through writing a diary. It is just a guide to life that takes us towards the right direction of life in order to get to the pinnacle of life. A diary is a treasure full of the stones of pains, troubles, insults, failures, tears, sufferings, etc., that would shine one day like shining diamonds in the form of success.

Just think of the sufferings that Anne had to face while living in the Annexe and then in the Concentration Camp. Her mother died hungry while she was collecting food for her daughters. Ultimately Anne also died with the dream in her eyes that she would publish her dairy in the form of a book. Only her father survived. After getting his freedom, he reached the Annexe and found the diary. And after editing it, he published it and made it the most popular diary ever written. Thus, even after Anne’s death, she still lives in our hearts in the form of her diary. In fact, a diary is a mirror showing a crystal clear image of our life.

FRIDAY, 10th SEPTEMBER, 1943

Dearest Kitty, Every time I write to you, something special has happened, usually unpleasant

rather than pleasant. This time, however, something wonderful is going on. On Wednesday, September 8, we were listening to the seven o'clock news

when we heard an announcement: "Here is some of the best news of the war so far : Italy has capitulated." Italy has unconditionally surrendered! The Dutch broadcast from England began at eight-fifteen with the news: "Listeners, an hour and fifteen minutes ago, just as I finished writing my daily report, we received the wonderful news of Italy's capitulation -1. I tell you, I never tossed my notes into the wastepaper basket with more delight than I did today!"

"God Save the King," the American national anthem and the Russian "Internationale "-2 were played. As always, the Dutch program was uplifting without being too optimistic-3.

The British have landed in Naples. Northern Italy is occupied by the Germans. The truce-4 was signed on Friday, September 3, the day the British landed in Italy. The Germans are ranting and raving-5 in all the newspapers at the treachery of Badoglio and the Italian king.

Still, there's bad news as well. It's about Mr Kleiman. As you know, we all like him very much. He's unfailingly cheerful and amazingly brave, despite the fact that he's always sick and in pain and can't eat much or do a lot of walking. "When Mr Kleiman enters a room, the sun begins to shine," Mother said recently, and she's absolutely right.

Now it seems he has to go to the hospital for a very difficult operation on his stomach, and will have to stay there for at least four weeks. You should have seen him when he told us good-bye. He acted so normally, as though he were just off to do an errand-1.

Yours, Anne

THURSDAY, 16th SEPTEMBER, 1943

Dearest Kitty,

Relationships here in the Annex are getting worse all the time. We don't dare open our mouths at meal-time (except to slip in a bite of food), because no matter what we say, someone is bound to resent it or take it the wrong way. Mr Voskuijl occasionally comes to visit us. Unfortunately, he's not doing very well. He isn't making it any easier for his family, because his attitude seems to be: what do I care, I'm going to die anyway! When I think how touchy everyone is here, I can just imagine what it must be like at the Voskuijls'.

I've been taking valerian-2 every day to fight the anxiety and depression, but it doesn't stop me from being even more miserable the next day. A good hearty laugh would help better than ten valerian drops, but we've almost forgotten how to laugh. Sometimes I'm afraid my face is going to sag-3 with all this sorrow and that my mouth is going to permanently droop-4 at the comers. The others aren't doing any better. Everyone here is dreading-5 the great terror known as winter.

Another fact that doesn't exactly brighten up our days is that Mr van Maaren, the man who works in the warehouse, is getting suspicious about the Annexe. A person with any brains must have noticed by now that Miep sometimes says she's going to the lab, Bep to the file room and Mr Kleiman to the Opekta supplies, while Mr Kugler claims the Annexe doesn't belong to this building at all, but to the one next door.

THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL — CLASS X (Term II) 7

We wouldn't care what Mr van Maaren thought of the situation except that he's known to be unreliable-1 and to possess a high degree of curiosity. He's not one who can be put off with a flimsy-2 excuse.

One day Mr Kugler wanted to be extra cautious, so at twenty past twelve he put on his coat and went to the drugstore around the corner. Less than five minutes later he was back, and he sneaked-3 up the stairs like a thief to visit us. At one-fifteen he started to leave, but Bep met him on the landing and warned him that van Maaren was in the office. Mr Kugler did an about-face and stayed with us until one-thirty. Then he took off his shoes and went in his stockinged-4 feet (despite his cold) to the front attic and down the other stairway, taking one step at a time to avoid the creaks-5. It took him fifteen minutes to negotiate the stairs, but he wound up safely in the office after having entered from the outside.

In the meantime, Bep had gotten rid of van Maaren and come to get Mr Kugler from the Annexe. But he'd already left and at that moment was still tiptoeing down the stairs. What must the passers by have thought when they saw the manager putting on his shoes outside?

Hey, you there, in the socks! Yours, Anne

WEDNESDAY, 29th SEPTEMBER, 1943

Dearest Kitty,

It's Mrs. van Daan's birthday. Other than one ration stamp each for cheese, meat and bread, all she received from us was a jar of jam. Her husband, Dussel and the office staff gave her nothing but flowers and also food. Such are the times we live in !

Bep had a nervous fit last week because she had so many errands -6 to do. Ten times a day people were sending her out for something, each time insisting she go right away or go again or that she'd done it all wrong. And when you think that she has her regular office work to do, that Mr Kleiman is sick, that Miep is home with a cold and that Bep herself has a sprained-7 ankle, boyfriend troubles and a grouchy-8 father, it's no wonder she's at the end of her tether-9. We comforted her and told her that if she'd put her foot down once or twice and say she didn't have the time, the shopping lists would shrink-10 of their own accord-11.

Let us discuss

1 . Why was Mr Kugler warned? Give a reason to support your answer.

2. Discuss the relationship of the housemates.

3 . State the details of the war news on 8 September.

SPEAKING ACTIVITY

Dussel complained to his mother that he was being treated like a leper. Have you ever been treated like a leper? Arrange a table talk on “What would you do if you are treated like a leper ?” Only four students can participate at a time using four directions of the table. The students can use their imaginative power. The teachers will have to judge according to the body language, content, voice, approach to the topic, grammatical errors, etc.

THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL — CLASS X (Term II) 9

Saturday there was a big drama, the likes of which have never been seen here before. It started with a discussion of van Maaren and ended in a general argument and tears. Dussel complained to Mother that he was being treated like a leper-1, that no one was friendly to him and that, after all, he hadn't done anything to deserve it. This was followed by a lot of sweet talk, which luckily Mother didn't fall for this time. She told him we were disappointed in him and that, on more than one occasion, he'd been a source of great annoyance. Dussel promised her the moon, but, as usual, we haven't seen so much as a beam.

There's trouble brewing-2 with the van Daans, I can tell! Father's furious-3 because they're cheating us: they've been holding back meat and other things. Oh, what kind of bombshell is about to burst now? If only I weren't so involved in all these skirmishes-4! If only I could leave here! They're driving us crazy!

Yours, Anne SUNDAY, 17th OCTOBER, 1943

Dearest Kitty, Mr Kleiman is back, thank goodness! He looks a bit pale, and yet he cheerfully

set off to sell some clothes for Mr van Daan. The disagreeable fact is that Mr van Daan has run out of money. He lost his last hundred guilders-5 in the warehouse-6 which is still creating trouble for us: the men are wondering how a hundred guilders could wind up in the warehouse on a Monday morning. Suspicion-7 abounds. Meanwhile, the hundred guilders have been stolen. Who's the thief?

But I was talking about the money shortage. Mrs. van D. has scads-8 of dresses, coats and shoes, none of which she feels she can do without. Mr van D.'s suit is difficult to sell, and Peter's bike was put on the block, but is back again, since nobody wanted it. But the story doesn't end there. You see, Mrs. van D. is going to have to part with her fur coat. In her opinion, the firm should pay for our upkeep, but that's ridiculous-9. They just had a flaming row about it and have entered the "oh, my sweet Putti" and "darling Kerli" stage of reconciliation.

My mind boggles-10 at the profanity-11 this honourable house has had to endure in the past month. Father walks around with his lips pressed together, and whenever he hears his name, he looks up in alarm, as if he's afraid he'll be called upon to resolve another delicate problem. Mother's so wrought up her cheeks are blotched-12 with red, Margot complains of headaches, Dussel can't sleep, Mrs. van

D. frets and fumes all day long, and I've gone completely round the bend. To tell you the truth, I sometimes forget who we're at odds with and who we're not. The only way to take my mind off it is to study, and I've been doing a lot of that lately.

Yours, Anne

FRIDAY, 29th OCTOBER, 1943

My dearest Kitty,

Mr Kleiman is out again; his stomach won't give him a moment's peace. He doesn't even know whether it's stopped bleeding. He came to tell us he wasn't feeling well and was going home, and for the first time he seemed really down.

Mr and Mrs. van D. have had more raging battles. The reason is simple: they're broke -1. They wanted to sell an overcoat and a suit of Mr van D.'s, but were unable to find any buyers. His prices were way too high.

Some time ago Mr Kleiman was talking about a furrier-2 he knows. This gave Mr van D. the idea of selling his wife's fur coat. It's made of rabbit skin, and she's had it for seventeen years. Mrs. van D. got 325 guilders for it, an enormous-3 amount. She wanted to keep the money herself to buy new clothes after the war, and it took some doing before Mr van D. could make her understand that it was desperately needed to cover household expenses.

You can't imagine the screaming, shouting, stamping of feet and swearing that went on. It was terrifying. My family stood holding its breath at the bottom of the stairs, in case it might be necessary to drag them apart. All the bickering-4, tears and nervous tension have become such a stress and strain that I fall into my bed at night crying and thanking my lucky stars that I have half an hour to myself.

I'm doing fine, except I've got no appetite-5. I keep hearing: "Goodness, you look awful!" I must admit they're doing their best to keep me in condition: they're plying me with dextrose-6, cod-liver oil-7, brewer's yeast-8 and calcium. My nerves often get the better of me, especially on 1-without money 2-a person who deals in furs 3-huge 4-quarrel for little reasons 5-hunger for food 6-a form of glucose 7-oil obtained from the liver of cod fish 8-a thing that is used in wine or beer

THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL — CLASS X (Term II) 11

Sundays; that's when I really feel miserable. The atmosphere is stifling-1, sluggish-2, leaden. Outside, you don't hear a single bird, and a deathly, oppressive silence hangs over the house and clings-3 to me as if it were going to drag me into the deepest regions of the underworld. At times like these, Father, Mother and Margot don't matter to me in the least. I wander from room to room, climb up and down the stairs and feel like a songbird whose wings have been ripped-4 off and who keeps hurling-5 itself against the bars of its dark cage. "Let me out, where there's fresh air and laughter!" a voice within me cries. I don't even bother to reply anymore, but lie down on the divan. Sleep makes the silence and the terrible fear go by more quickly, helps pass the time, since it's impossible to kill it.

Yours, Anne

FRIDAY, 10th SEPTEMBER, 1943

According to recent reports, the British troops had landed in Naples. Northern part of Italy was captured by the Germans. Mr Kleiman had to go to hospital for an operation.

THURSDAY, 16th SEPTEMBER, 1943

The housemates of the Annexe did not have good relations with one another. Mr Voskuijl seemed to be very indifferent as he had cancer and he was at the door of death. Because of depression and anxiety, Anne had to take some medicines. In the opinion of Anne, the housemates of the Annexe should like one another in order to make the environment healthy and pleasant but it did not seem to be possible. Mr van Maaren, a warehouse worker, looked very suspicious about the Annexe. Mr Kugler had to be very careful while dodging him.

WEDNESDAY, 29th SEPTEMBER, 1943

Mr Kleiman had some kind of stomach disease. Because of less money, Mr and Mrs. van Daan had a noisy argument. After selling her coat, Mrs van Daan got 325 guilders and she desired to preserve the money so that new clothes could be bought afterwards. As it was difficult to meet the household expenses, Mr van Daan wished to convince her to use money for the same.

Anne felt like a song bird being trapped in a cage whose wings had been ripped off.

SUNDAY, 17th OCTOBER, 1943

Mr van Daan lost his hundred guilders which were kept in the warehouse. As he did not have enough money, it was really difficult to survive in such miserable conditions. Even they could not get a buyer for Peter’s bike, which was urgently needed to get some money. Anne found that her father remained cool and calm. He could be seen walking here and there restlessly and without speaking a single word. Whenever he used to hear his name, an alarming sign could be seen all over his face. On one side, Margot was suffering from headache and on the other side, Anne’s mother looked upset. Mr Dussel remained awake all night. Mrs van Daan was looking very tense and Anne could be seen studying continuously in order to divert her mind from stress.

FRIDAY, 29th OCTOBER, 1943

Mr Kleiman had some stomach problem. Because of paucity of money, Mrs van Daan and Mr van Daan used to quarrel with each other. Anyway Mrs van Daan sold her fur coat for 325 guilders, but she kept the money safely and desired that after the end of the war, she would buy some new clothes. As Mr van Daan came to know about such a desire, he tried to convince her to abandon her desire as money was much needed to meet the household expenses. All the housemates were shocked to hear the shouting and screaming voices.Anne was not well, so she had to take medicine and complete bed rest. She felt like a song bird trapped in a cage hurling against the bars to get freedom. She wished to get fresh air and an independent life.

PLOTThe plot provides information about the miserable condition of Jews’ life. Metaphors and similes have been used to describe the incidents vividly. A comparison has been made with the wingless birds hurling in its cage, restless to lead a safe and free life.
