As astonishing as the photos in National Geographic and an exhilarating life adventure:

Darrin Bennett is many things, but above all a wild man, in the sense that most of his adult life has been spent in the wild with nature and indigenous people. I’m personally honored that he is one of our expedition leaders and that he will introduce you to one of the world’s most magical places—the Kimberley.

Dear Traveller,

It is with great honour and excitement that I do what was asked of me: to contribute to our stunning new brochure by relating my experience of the Kimberley.

Over the last 10 years I have been intimately involved with our expeditions to the Kimberley. Simply put, there is no place like it, or even similar to it, in the world. The isolation and remoteness of this 425,000 square kilometre, ancient landscape re-energizes the mind, body and soul. It is a place that will draw you back time after time just as it has done for thousands of years for the indigenous people.

So, what makes the Kimberley so special? It starts with the incredible geological landscapes that date back nearly two billion years. It’s the beautiful blue turquoise waters that meet the ancient iron-stained sandstone. It’s the tidal movement that ebbs and flows continuously creating a constant and dramatic change with every blink of the eye. It’s the amazing flora and fauna that has evolved and adapted to live in such a harsh and breathtaking landscape. It’s the incredible ‘Stories in Stone’ rock art that is found elegantly painted throughout the sandstone caves of the Kimberley. This is what the Kimberley means to me.

Add to the Kimberley’s attractions an expedition ship like the National Geographic Orion, the perfect base for exploration, and you have a voyage that is very special. I look forward to welcoming you and sharing this unique and life-changing destination with you.

“ Whatever the motivation, no one returns from the Kimberley unchanged. It affects all who visit, intoxicating and mystifying in equal amounts” —RODERICK EIME, TRAVEL JOURNALIST

THE KIMBERLEYA land so old, vast tracts pre-date the very existence of fossils. Where, over eons, immense geological forces have buckled the earth’s crust leaving contorted folds of ancient rock. Explore the seemingly endless coastline crowded with islands, bursting with marine life and rivers that lead to vertiginous waterfalls. View indigenous rock art of ethereal Wandjina spirits and elegant pre-history Gwion Gwion figures. Visit this land where primeval crocodiles rule and merely a trickle of travellers venture each year.

THE SPICE ISLANDSDiscover a string of idyllic islands with intriguing living cultures and fascinating legacies of trade, colonisation, and war. Isolated and remote, the wildlife found among the islands is rare, from giant Komodo dragons in the wild to seldom-seen birds of paradise. The undersea is perhaps even more wild with coral reefs set amidst clear, warm water that teems with colourful reef fish. The Spice Islands are so named for the nutmeg and mace harvested here during the history of colonialism and exploitation by Dutch, Portuguese, and English traders and privateers. Discover their history, as well as the ghosts of World War II where the global conflict played out in brutish fights for these tiny islands. Today, many cultures here choose to live close to ancestral traditions, giving us a look into the islands’ histories that would otherwise be impossible.

SHARE THE ADVENTURE WITH A RENOWNED TEAMThe comment cards we receive from guests after every voyage consistently express the same sentiments: “Outstanding expedition staff.” Our expedition leaders, known as ELs to staff and guests alike, are exceptional leaders who attract and inspire the naturalists, marine biologists, geologists, historians, archaeologists and certified photo instructors who accompany National Geographic Orion’s voyages. Collectively, these specialists have hundreds of years of experience guiding travellers to the world’s most interesting places. They are the informative experts with whom explorers want to travel repeatedly; and the engaging conversationalists whom curious travellers want to share drinks or dinner.

WELCOME TO THE BRIDGEWhile cruise lines set a standard itinerary that doesn’t vary regardless of which captain or cruise director is aboard, the teamwork between our expedition leaders and captains play a vital role in the flexibility and spontaneity that is a hallmark of our expeditions. Our captains take great pleasure in our guests’ fascination with their navigation work and welcome you to the bridge to observe the calm, steady business of guiding the ship.

of the Wandjinas on the Great Fish Chase. (B,L,D)

DAY 9: TALBOT BAY/HORIZONTAL WATERFALLSThe Horizontal Waterfalls in the Buccaneer Archipelago are created by the rapid tidal fall between oceanside cliffs. When conditions are right, a ‘waterfall’ three metres high can form as the trapped waters cascade through the narrow gap. Later, explore the twisted geological folds of the ancient seabed at Cyclone Bay. (B,L,D)

DAY 10: NARES POINT & CROCODILE CREEKZodiac cruise and explore off Koolan Island, a finger of sandstone. Nearby Crocodile Creek defies its name, with several vertical embankments keeping it crocodile-free, allowing us to take advantage of the cool freshwater natural swimming pool. (B,L,D)

DAY 11: BROOME, WESTERN AUSTRALIA/DISEMBARKDisembark in Broome. (B) Note: Where you see (B,L,D), indicates each day’s meals included in the cost. B Breakfast; L Lunch; D Dinner.

DAYS 2 AND 3: CÔM^/AT SEASettle into the ship and prepare for amazing photographic opportunities with hands-on instruction from our team. The ship makes a brief technical stop at Côm^. (B,L,D)

DAY 4: WYNDHAM & THE BUNGLE BUNGLESTake a flight over the Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park, where ancient hills resembling giant beehives form deep chasms and long gorges, or cruise Ord River to Lake Argyle, navigating the river between Kununurra and Lake Argyle. See the lake from a scenic lookout, and visit the historical Durack homestead. (B,L,D)

DAY 5: KING GEORGE RIVER & FALLSZodiacs cruise along the spectacular King George River, with its near-vertical canyon walls. The river drains the Gardner Plateau into the highest single-drop falls in the Kimberley. Early season, we will linger in the thundering mist. Later in the year, we will get close, even under the falls. Opt to hike to the top for a swim in one of the freshwater pools. (B,L,D)

DAY 6: VANSITTART BAYSee 40,000-year-old Gwion Gwion Aboriginal rock paintings. Visit the wreck of a DC-3, a WWII remnant. (B,L,D)

DAY 7: HUNTER RIVER (AND OPTIONAL HELICOPTER TO MITCHELL FALLS)From the stunning anchorage off Naturalist’s Island, we spend the day exploring the mangrove lined channels of the Hunter River. Photographers will want to capture the vermilion rock at sunrise or sunset. (B,L,D)

DAY 8: MONTGOMERY REEF & RAFT POINTConditions permitting, the quick tide change at Montgomery Reef creates raging torrents of water as the sea level drops and the reef seems to rise from the ocean. Watch from your Zodiac, and look for wildlife feeding on stranded sea life. Then explore Raft Point with its outdoor Aboriginal drawings—an account
