    Culture

The Kimberley offers plenty of opportunities to experience Indigenous

culture and lifestyle. Aboriginal Wandjina and Bradshaw rock art can

be found in the remote parts of the region, with some of the best

examples only accessible on a wilderness cruise. Rock art can also

be seen in the national parks including Windjana Gorge, Purnululu

    and Mitchell River National Parks.

Take an Indigenous guided tour with a cruise through Geikie Gorge or

visit an Aboriginal community at Cape Leveque. Indigenous artgalleries showcase some of the regions unique work and can be

found in Broome, Kununurra and Derby.

    Outback

Travelling between Broome and Kununurra takes you through some

of the most rugged outback scenery and pioneering towns of the

Kimberley. Travel along the Gibb River Road from Derby to Kununurra

for the four wheel drive adventure of a lifetime. Explore the outback

town of Fitzroy Crossing, or Halls Creek on the edge of the Great

Sandy Desert and site of Western Australias first gold discovery. For

a real outback adventure, and for high clearance four wheel drives

only, follow the unsealed Kalumburu Road north to Kalumburu

    Mission.

NatureThe Kimberley features some of the largest and most remote national parks in

Australia. The most well known is Purnululu National Park, home to the

beehive domes of the Bungle Bungle Range. Enjoy a day tour from Kununurra

or Halls Creek, or an overnight stay in the park. Walk through Windjana Gorge

National Park with its 300 metre high cliff walls and freshwater pools. Wade

through the 750 metre long tunnel in Tunnel Creek National Park or explore

the second largest meteorite crater in the world at Wolfe Creek Crater National

Park near Halls Creek. Cruise through the beautiful waterways of Geikie Gorge

or on the inland sea of Lake Argyle.

Mitchell River National Park in the north offers an abundance of bird andwildlife and spectacular scenery including Mitchell Plateau and the

    Mitchell Falls.

    Coast

One of Australias most famous beaches, Cable Beach in Broome, provides

22 kilometres of white sand framing turquoise waters. A visit to Cable Beach,

whether for swimming, relaxing or watching the sunset, is a must-do

experience on any trip to Broome. Just south of Broome, Gantheume Beach

is popular with the locals, while Riddell Beach features turtle nesting from

October to February. Further north are the secluded beaches of the Dampier

Peninsula and the spectacular red cliffs and white sand of Cape Leveque.

The huge tidal movements of the Kimberley can be witnessed all along

the coast. Some of the highest up to 12 metres can be seen at

Derby Wharf. These high and low tides also create the spectacular natural

phenomenon, Horizontal Falls in the Buccaneer Archipelago. This group of

around 1,000 islands is best seen from the air.

    Kimberley Cruising

Extended cruises take you to parts of the Kimberley only a fortunate few have

seen. Many also offer helicopter flights for a different view of the region.

Explore the Kimberley waterways including the Sale, Prince Regent, King

George and Hunter Rivers. Witness the fascinating Horizontal Falls and

Montgomery Reef up close and visit spectacular waterfalls including King

George Falls. See 20,000 year old Wandjina and Bradshaw rock art, swim

in rockpools, fish for barramundi or catch a mud crab.

Beyond the coastline, 300 kilometres west of Broome, Rowley Shoals Marine

Park can be accessed on an extended cruise. The coral atolls offer

spectacular snorkelling and diving, as well as big game fishing in the

    surrounding waters.

    Perth 2 hrs 30 mins 3 hrs 25 mins

    Darwin 1 hr 45 mins 45 mins

    Kununurra 1 hr 20 mins -

The above table shows flight durations for direct flights only. Connecting flights from other

destinations are also available. Times are a guide only and subject to change.

    BY CAR

Take the time to explore and discover as you make your way around Broome and the

Kimberley. Whether its getting there or getting around we recommend Avis car hire. See

page 15 for details or ask your travel agent about the great specials Avis has to offer.

Broome, Derby and Kununurra can be accessed by sealed road via the Great Northern

Highway in Western Australia or the Victoria Highway linking with the Stuart Highway in the

Northern Territory. The unsealed Gibb River Road links Derby and Kununurra.

A unique feature of travelling in the region are road trains. These can be up to 50 metres in

length, so extra care should be taken when overtaking them. Many stations in the Kimberleyregion are unfenced and it is not uncommon to encounter wandering stock and wildlife.

Particular care should be taken when driving at dawn and dusk, and if possible, avoid

driving at night. During the summer period (November to April), road closures due to

flooding are common, particularly on unsealed roads.

    WEATHER GUIDE - TEMPERATURE AVERAGE

    Autumn 22C to 33C Autumn 21C to 34C

    Spring 22C to 33C Spring 23C to 38C

    SUMMER SEASON (NOVEMBER TO APRIL)

In summer the weather is hot and humid and the nights

balmy. While its known as the wet season, the rain usually

falls in heavy, short downpours in the late afternoon and

evenings. Some attractions may not be accessible due to

road closures and local flooding. This is the best t ime to visit

for spectacular sunsets, thundering waterfalls, plenty of

    wildlife and less crowds.

    WINTER SEASON (MAY TO OCTOBER)

Winter is the most popular time to visit with sunny days and

on the coast, cool nights with fresh breezes. This is the best

time to experience all outdoor activities, with most roads

and attractions open throughout the season.

    WHAT TO BRING

The weather is always warm so lightweight, casual clothing

can be worn year round during the day. In winter, nights can

be cold in the inland areas, so bring warmer items. We

suggest you bring comfortable walking shoes, long pants

and sun protection including a hat, SPF 30+ sunscreen,

sunglasses and a long sleeved shirt.

    SWIMMING

There are plenty of safe places to swim in the region,

including Cable Beach. Salt and freshwater crocodiles are

found in estuaries, rivers and billabongs in the remote parts

of the Kimberley, so always observe warning signs, but if

you are not sure, do not swim. Marine stingers are most

prevalent along the coastline from November to April.

    ABORIGINAL CULTURE AND PERMITS

Transit Permits to visit Indigenous communities are granted

through the Aboriginal Lands Trust. However, it is best to

choose a tour where operators already have permission to

enter the land. Help preserve Indigenous sites by avoiding

touching or stepping on these areas.
